very early 90s canadian rock megasmashes that never really went away - i still hear both of these songs w/ shocking frequency on the radio, enough so that it seemed totally plausible when they heard 'life is a highway' 3 times during the course of one long drive on the office. western canada vs eastern canada. here we are folx, the dream we all dreamed of, boys vs girl in the grey cup of love.

Personally, for me, I like to crank "Life is a Highway" up real loud on my Zune when I'm at the gym getting pumped up to fuck later that night. Then, later that night, while fucking, I like to have "Black Velvet" playing very softly and gently on my Bose Wave Radio (it also plays MP3s). But don't ask me to choose between these two.

del griffith, Sunday, 28 July 2013 17:08 (twelve years ago)

i think any possibility of "Life Is A Highway" growing on me with time was erased when the Rascal Flatts cover became an equally gigantic hit a few years ago.

"Black Velvet" easily, mainly because I didn't recognize it by name and was pleasantly surprised to finally know what that one song is called. It's not great but it falls into the background sooooo much better. "Life Is A Highway" is way up in your face sonically, and the metaphor is so cringe-inducingly dumb, everything about it proclaims "lame baby boomer in mid-life crisis buys convertible, drives out west looking for experience he missed the first time around." Also irritating because I quite like "Lunatic Fringe" and the positive vibes of post-Cannibals turn-of-the-90s pop-rock (see relevant threads) and this sort of ruins both.

Gotta say the long outro of "Black Velvet" is fairly stupid though, reminds me how much this sort of plodding take on blues-rock arrangement dominated as the go-to signifier for "rootsy" "authentic" American bar-band rock through the entire decade.

I admit she kind of wails on the chorus but generally the song is more content to stay back as a slow-groove jam or whatever. Compared to the compressed guitar attack on "Life Is A Highway" it's like elevator music.

Neanderthal, Monday, 29 July 2013 13:54 (twelve years ago)

My complaint with Black Velvet (both of them, it appears) is the poot-poot-poot deep farty tones of the bass. Also, as someone who lives down here, I get a little tired of Southern Gothic songs where the air is like molasses, mama's rocking her baby, there's fried green tomatoes down at the whistle stop cafe, the darkies may or may not be in the fields hollerin'...

But all that, Life Is a Highway is from a world where there are Canadians less cool than Bryan Adams, smilies are trite, and instead of yellow lines, the roads are divided by a 3000-mile blood stain from the abortion that was once Tom Cochran's integrity.

I will never take a roadtripp with ENBB, just on the off-chance that was going to happen.

There were people back then who'd whisper almost conspiratorially about BV, "you know," *clears throat* "those lyrics are about Elvis."

anyhow voted 'life is a highway' and not just becuz it doesn't spend alot of the song reminding you better musicians exist and not just becuz it's 'slow southern style' from a torontoan (torontite?)(i bet she is) but cuz dude did fucking 'lunatic fringe' (which i certainly won't hold against 'life is a highway', way more willing to reward someone for approaching greatness once than punish them for failing to do so again. life is a highway dude.) and also cuz it amuses me to think of 'life is a highway' as a sequel to 'lunatic fringe', that 'lunatic fringe' is cochrane going over the precipice and 'life is a highway' is him years down the line, walking along the side of the road, muttering some barely decipherable nonsense to himself under his breath and then screaming 'JUST TELL 'EM WE'RE SURVIVORS' anytime someone approaches him. would kinda love to hear someone take the a capella of 'life is a highway' and bury it in the mix of a godspeed record, like that crank on slow riot for new zero kanada.

I saw Tom Cochrane in Winnipeg on the tour for LIAH. There was a lot of that thing where everything drops out but the beat and everyone sings the chorus while clapping rhythmically overhead.

Lunatic Fringe and Red Rider in general are great, but have nothing to do with Life is Highway, sorry. You couldn't possibly get less dystopian. This is as close as TomC could come to life on a precipice in 1992:

I'm not that fond of "Black Velvet", and the karaoke diva thing is pretty annoying, but at least I recognize that it's a well-crafted, well-performed tune

it's not, though. it's almost the exact opposite of that: it's a series of poorly-understood passes at a song. that "if you please" at the end of the chorus? what craft is that? It's kind of spiritual kin to Glenn Frey's "The Heat Is On" - there's just nothing really in there.

Life is a Highway sucks too don't get me wrong but Black Velvet is just the shittiest songwriting, the sort of stuff that makes people think the blues must suck to inspire such dreck.

tight in the runs (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 01:29 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I'm not saying it's great, just that it strikes me as a competent melody whereas "Life Is a Highway" doesn't even strike me as that. When I saw the thread, I could remember the whole tune of "Black Velvet" and couldn't remember how most of "Life Is a Highway" went except for the chorus 'hook'. Then I listened and realized it was because "Life Is a Highway" doesn't actually do that much of anything. Both of them sound like made-for-TV studio music, though. What was the rest of the world doing buying this stuff??

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 30 July 2013 02:00 (twelve years ago)

I lived through "Life is a Highway"'s initial popularity in the US and then got to experience it all over again when my family went to Australia for a few months at the end of that summer. It took them a while to catch up. "Achy Breaky Heart" was a pop hit there then, too, which was also really weird for a 9th-grade me, just getting into music.

This is a thread unto itself but:

i recall hearing stuff about how bryan adams had too many american musicians to qualify while springsteen or whomever had a canadian producer

You have to score two points according to the MAPL system: http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/info_sht/r1.htm . The idea is to promote Canadian songwriters and recording facilities in addition to performers. Adams threw his hissy fit when "Everything I Do" didn't qualify since music and lyrics were co-written with Mutt Lange and it was recorded in the UK. The criteria were actually revised just because of this (see "special case" #4). So, conversely, a vocal track from Herbie Hancock's Joni Mitchell tribute album would probably count. I actually don't have any issue with this system.

I basically agree with this:

In the intervening years I've grown to despise slow blooze stuff so much more and have at least a nostalgic appreciation for Tom Cochrane. I'd change the radio station in anger on Alanna Myles now and would at least leave LIAH on. I totally cranked Midnight Blue when I heard it last month fwiw.

That 1990 list is insane to me when I think about how well I know almost all of those songs

looking at that billboard list. totally forgot about "just like jesse james." i was on a jet flying out to san jose for the 1990 national forensic league nationals. had my plastic tube "headphones" plugged into the armrest where the music came from. there were like 10 loops of music you could choose. i picked the pop loop. heard this song about once every 30 minutes for four+ hours that flight. kinda cathartic.

andrew m., Tuesday, 30 July 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

i hate both LIAH and BV, though i'd probably have more fun karaoke-ing BV. it was summer after my freshman year of college when LIAH had the world on its knees. i had to work really early on monday mornings, so i'd set the vhs to record 120 minutes. sometimes i'd just let the tape roll through the night to see what interesting shit they'd play after the show. it was very disappointing. LIAH was played. constantly. come back to at&t commercials and LIAH. all night.

How do you drive a highway? It's pedantic, but you don't "walk a sidewalk/footpath" either.

Life is a runway, I want to fly it all night long.

Another complaint, this is one of those videos about doing something "all night long" that takes place almost exclusively during the day.

It's like that White Lion cover of Radar Love where THE BAND GETS CHASED BY THE COPS AT NOON IN THE DESERT.

pplains, Tuesday, 30 July 2013 16:03 (twelve years ago)

anyhow voted 'life is a highway' and not just becuz it doesn't spend alot of the song reminding you better musicians exist and not just becuz it's 'slow southern style' from a torontoan (torontite?)(i bet she is) but cuz dude did fucking 'lunatic fringe' (which i certainly won't hold against 'life is a highway', way more willing to reward someone for approaching greatness once than punish them for failing to do so again. life is a highway dude.) and also cuz it amuses me to think of 'life is a highway' as a sequel to 'lunatic fringe', that 'lunatic fringe' is cochrane going over the precipice and 'life is a highway' is him years down the line, walking along the side of the road, muttering some barely decipherable nonsense to himself under his breath and then screaming 'JUST TELL 'EM WE'RE SURVIVORS' anytime someone approaches him. would kinda love to hear someone take the a capella of 'life is a highway' and bury it in the mix of a godspeed record, like that crank on slow riot for new zero kanada.

one yankee sympathizer masquerading as a historian (difficult listening hour), Monday, 5 August 2013 17:15 (twelve years ago)

I voted for Black Velvet because listen, it's not about which song I prefer but which one I abhor. Black Velvet, like I mentioned above, is a paint-by-numbers farty southern gothic tune about babbies and elvis and front porches and blah blah blah. But at the end of the day, it's not "Life Is A Highway".

Just the title of that one alone should induce nausea. Hey man, come here, I got a little story to tell you and it's called LIFE IS A HIGHWAY. If you saw that on a billboard driving down the road outside Panhandle City, you'd be tempted to pull the wheel to the right off the road for an attempted kamikaze attempt on a title so banal. You know how you could take something so boring and tick it up a notch to be something that doesn't make you want to kill yourself? How about "Expressway to Your Heart" or "Long and Lonesome Highway" or goddam, even "Highway Song" would be better. None of those titles sit you down and try to condescend to you.

And that's just the title. Listening to the song only gets worse from there. So whatever, Black Velvet wins. Had LIfe Is A Highway gone up against something like All I Wanna Do is Make Love to You, you'd likely have seen the same result. Life Is a Highway sucks that much.

ok I changed my mind, black velvet is worse garbage, I keep imagining it covered by four non blondes for some reason and even the mere idea of that song in my own head makes me angry at both Alannah Myles and FNB.

I guess "life is a highway" is terrible too but almost movingly so, it's like the lyrics were written by that firefighter who won season 1 of the bachelorette, I guess my heart warms to the song when I imagine this garbage being recited to a girl in a gazebo at night while she weeps surrounded by a reality tv production team rather than performed by tom cochrane.

I can't find it at present, but I'm pretty sure there was a pre-nu-ilx thread where we compared the lyrics of Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" to those of Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again."

On what type of road do I walk? A lonely one.

Who is with me on this road? No one.

How, therefore, do I walk whilst I am on this lonely road? Why, it appears that I am walking alone.

Because it's a lonely road, and I am on my own.

Have I ever known a different type of road? No, I have not. For I am a person who walks alone, on a road that is best described as "lonely."
