Camden Town, NW1.

But adolescence in Tavistock, west Devon.

and now in a little Wiltshire village.

(well not right now, actually - right now, a cost office in sleepy Swindon).

... but folks still in NW1 - or NW3, to be accurate. There's nothing like a decent pension.

Sam - this is why I'm glad I ramped up the detail - it aids such six degrees of separation ohmigods. And as far as I can work out, not stalking.

met mike. hopefully didn't contribute to the 'waste of time' he mentions.

Oh blimey no! That year was the exception (but academically it was wasted). Strictly speaking we didn't meet while you were a Lufbra resident tho'.

I wonder what proportion of people who move to London from the provinces get sick of the place in their mid-late 30s (or earlier) and move out? I was told years ago that many/most people* who move to the capital describe this arc into disillusionment. I think I must still be on an upward trajectory. Glasgow sounds awfully nice though.

(* - 'people' probably just restricted to middle-income UK citizens in full-time work with looming adult responsibilities).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

doesn't it just!

I'm not nbored of London in the slightest..... yet. I fear I may be at some point though, unless I become more "comfortable"

19-20 - brief spell in Isleworth, Harrow on the Hill, Motspur Park, Brixton

That doesn't seem quite right somehow. Perhaps I got some times wrong. Those are all the places though!

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

And I would have liked to live in Manchester.

Sarah (starry), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:00 (twenty-two years ago)

My whole world is falling down. Why? Because Tim isn't really from Sidmouth. Fascinating stuff though. I'm trying to think of something interesting to say about Loughborough. Meanwhile, here's my arc of disillusionment: village in NW Leics, Glasgow, Hastings, Bournemouth, Prague, Bournemouth, San Sebastian, Renteria, Hondarribia, Castelldefels. Some of them were for very short periods, but I put them in to make me look interesting.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael J, Glasgow is awfully nice. I have stayed briefly in London quite a few times and the people were like soooo mean (example: if you get on a bus in London and you don't know which stop to get off, people make a point of ignoring you like you have lepracy or sumfink, in Glasgow helpless bus passanger cause almost riots of friendly people trying to outhelp each other). But you lot are starting to change my opinion on Laaandon folk....

Plinky (Plinky), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Miller has lived in three of my favourite cities *sobs*

but he's also lived in Bournemouth! When were you there Peter? I was there from 91-95.

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Chris, I was in Bournemouth for two summers, probably 91 and 92. We've discussed this before, I lived on that Brookside Close thing at the polytechnic for one of the two summers. Which are your fave cities?

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

oh christ yeah, my memory is like a sieve.

Barca, Prague and San Sebastian (mmmm, great Tapas) Funnily enough I was talking to a bloke from San Sebastian at the black and white balls, terribly nice chap.

24 Oxford
25 Farringdon, London
25-now Shepherds Bush, London

RickyT (RickyT), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I plan to move back to London when I am stinking rich.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Michael & Simeon: I'm sure the pub was called 'The Blue Anchor'.....location, er, think it was on the southern side, towards an area called 'Thornton Heath'(?) 'cos that name is in my head too. (I bet it turns out that my folks borough boundary geography is crap and it was actually miles away from Crystal Palace)

London: Yeah, I moved there at 28 and left at 35, but it was as much due to financial/life frustration as to 'disillusionment' - but then what do you mean by disillusionment, I suppose....
I couldn't ever see myself being able to have a life of my own because I could never afford a flat of my own, and being near so much casual opulence and other people's comfort was driving me into crazyness and embittered misery. The arts/cultural life was great, but after a while I always felt like a lower-class eager moth fluttering round self-assured middle-class lightbulbs.
I left through making a major break in my work life - going freelance to try to make more money - going to Southampton for an 18-month contract.
Then 'that thing' happened - as I came back to London less and less for weekends througout '96, it began to 'wear off' and seem unpleasant to me, both for exactly the reasons that some visitors report - crowding, dirt, rudeness, urban crazies - and because the area I knew and had lived in (off Powis Square) kept changing, and got even *more* trendy and poncified and expensive and less cosmopolitan than it had already become over the previous 7 years.
So I lost my sense of (and desire for) 'connectedness' to W11......

I don't even like visiting London much now. A couple of my friends from those years still live there (N1), and tell me that even they are finding it more and more brutal to deal with......

Ray M (rdmanston), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Also I didn't know Archel was proper Brighton-ish. I like the way people's breakdowns start off like pretty one-sided football scores before turning into really tight rugby matches. No doubt they will eventually settle down into leisurely one-day cricket internationals as medical science improves.

Simeon: the next-to-the-station one = Railway Tavern (I can only think of the the Gipsy Hill Tavern down there, and the rough one across the road), the '1981 Pub of the Year' = Railway Bell? The latter is my favourite in the area. I'm south of Central Hill, just off the triangle.

Ray: yeah, that pretty much catches what I guess I meant by 'disillusionment'. I suspect there comes a point for a lot of people where they simply get sick of being almost continuously broke for a lifestyle (even if that lifestyle is no more luxuriant than a 2-bed flat in Z3, a travelcard and a few meals out/cinema trips) and a locale that holds no thrill for them any longer. I still love going over Westminster Bridge at night, (nearly) all my friends are here and the idea of moving any further out (other than *away all together*) is a non-starter (rest of South East England = rubbish).

The meanness of Londoners is a chimera in my opinion.

Perry Bernard (panterus), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Origins of The Nipper:

1) 'Bringing up Baby'(1938)
[In jail]
Susan Vance: Anyway, David, when they find out who we are they'll let us out.
David Huxley: When they find out who you are they'll pad the cell.

Susan Vance: Hey Flatfoot! You ain't gettin' no place. Come here...Yes you. Come on. Haul it over. Haul it over. You want someone to talk don't ya?...Get me out of this cooler and I'll unbutton my puss and shoot the works...Yeah, I kinda had you fooled for a minute, didn't I?...I could make a sucker out of a copper. What did I tell ya my name was? ("Susan Vance"). Vance...that's my society moniker. But the mob all calls me Swingin' Door Susie...Now ya pegged me. Come on toots. Open up, open up...Listen, I'll talk. I'll talk so much it will make your hair curl. Susan Vance: Aw, quit beefin', get wise to yourself, the heat's on Jerry.
Constable: Jerry? Jerry? Ain't his name Bone?
Susan Vance: Bone. Aww, you mean to say you don't remember Jerry the Nipper?
Constable: Jerry the Nipper. Make a note of that Doc.
David Huxley: Constable. She's making all this up out of motion pictures she's seen.

2) 'The Awful Truth' (1937)
Lucy Warriner(played by Irene Dunne, talking about her husband, played by Cary Grant): Well, don't look at me you like a little drink yourself. We call him Jerry the Nipper. Like's to sneak it when nobody's looking. So cute about it too.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 09:38 (twenty-two years ago)

It's something that I discovered in San Francisco thanks to Esperpento. Then there was the tapas place in Seattle and my heart was forever given over to goodness.

You should be able to get a ñ on ILX or your own webpage with any keyboard layout by typing the following:
ñ

Don't forget the semicolon at the end or it won't work. If you want a capital Ñ (do they ever happen in Spanish? I dunno) then just capitalise the N at the start but not the rest:

Ñ

hell, open a windle (reb), Saturday, 5 October 2002 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(Yes, in the middle of entirely capitalised words, regardless of the correct answer to the question I was thinking it was equivalent to. DUH. Sorry 'bout that big space there too.)

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 5 October 2002 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm from Alexandria, VA.

Mary (Mary), Sunday, 6 October 2002 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

And you'd need a capital Ñ every time you say "Ñyah nyah nyah" too.

ILM in particular, dog latin? My exhousemate and her boyfriend were from Letchworth but I have never been there. This post is not interesting but it is another mention for you.

Rebecca (reb), Saturday, 9 November 2002 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate, you're an Essex girl? It's not obvious.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 9 November 2002 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheers for mentioning LETCHWORTH rebecca. Yes LETCHWORTH is not mentioned on ILM at all but LETCHWORTH is metioned about once on ILE. It really is about time people started mentioning the word LETCHWORTH at least once a sentence on ILX. After all LETCHWORTH is the world's first garden city and LETCHWORTH is an okay place to live and LETCHWORTH is slap bang inbetween Cambridge and London so LETCHWORTH must be quite a great town.
LETWCHWORTH!

Sorry, it's getting late. /coat

dog latin, Sunday, 10 November 2002 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's assume any stay of about two months or more constitutes living somewhere.... I'm not even going to try to assign an age or date to these, although they are in roughly the right order:

Minneapolis
Rural Minnesota
Rural South Dakota
Colombus Ohio
New Jersey (too young to specify where.... close to NY city?)
Colorado
Park City Utah
Rural Oregon (mushroom farm)
Olympia Washington (convent)
Northern Minnesota (native american reservation)
Berkeley, CA
Minneapolis

six years pass...

I was considering starting a thread called "Where are you from?" to discuss the question itself. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who can't easily answer the question.

Earlier, I was thinking about how as of next year, I will have been living in the Bay Area twice as long as I've lived anywhere since I was 11 years old. Yet I have always been a renter here, and it seems unlikely that I'll ever be able to buy property here. I don't know that many people and it kind of still feels like I just got here.

I was born in Chicago, so I have often answered the question with "the Chicago area" (if I just say "Chicago", and they are familiar with the city, they will immediately start asking me about certain areas, and I'll always have to explain that I haven't lived there since I was a kid and am not familiar with the geography, and then I'll feel like a putz for talking so giving them so much info about me in the first few minutes of the conversation).

Lately, I've just said "nowhere in particular", but that might even be worse than opening with specifics.

I don't even know what sports teams to root for. I always used to root for Chicago teams, but they all suck in the sports I like, and I really care less and less about being associated with the city in any way as I get older - even though I still have a lot of extended family there.

Anyone else have this problem, or even care about this sort of thing?

Highly trained BBQ chef (rockapads), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

it's not where you from but where you at.

carne asada, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

The longest (by far) that I've stayed in one place was the six years before, during, and after by last bout of uni. So that's usually what I answer when prompted. Much simpler than attempting to answer honestly.

Born in Portland, Oregon. I've lived either in or near it more or less all my life. Currently I live in a bedroom community south of Portland's city limits, but I've also lived in SE, NW and SW Portland at various times.
