Also the nasty new weapons? (srcew-driver, knife, hammer, chainsaw) Why do I feel more uncomfortable about the idea of using these in a game than, say, an Uzi or Rocket Launcher?

― mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)
I found the RC helicopter mission pretty easy. I did it on my third try. The hardest mission so far for me was the one where you have to start a riot. I had about seven goes before I did it.
Just now I'm stuck on the mission where you have to pick up a gun in the multi storey car park, then you meet some guy in a silver car, and you both go to defend Diaz and his pal from some Cubans. From the pink spot where you're supposed to sit you can't see a thing. I always end up shooting the people I'm supposed to be defending, I think. Last time, when it all kicked off, I tried jumping down to ground level to get a better view, but that didn't work, and the silver car guy at the top of the stairs was nagging me, "Tommy, I could use some help", while seeming not to be doing much himself.
A good thing I did recently was hijack a bus, and drive it to the end of the pier. When the front wheels were over the edge I got off, and gave the bus a nudge to send it very slowly into the sea. All the passengers leapt from the windows into the water. I got to look down and see all these floating corpses and the sinking bus.

Before this, I never played a modern (ie post-Atari 2600-era) first-person shoot-'em-up or driving game in my life, and my forte is all the wussy Myst/Sim games, so I'm actually amazed how far I've gotten with this -- 21% completion according to the stats. Currently stuck on the bomb-the-fake-Starbuck's mission. It gets way too intense way too fast.
I still dislike running over innocent bystanders or killing women (sometimes, when you run over one, they let out this soulchilling "OH!"), but slicing up gang members with a chainsaw is way fun.

The Airwolf helicopter is also great for the "cause a lot of mayhem" mission for Big Mitch Baker.
I thought the trick to the protecting Diaz mission was the same as most of the rest of the tricks: the mighty Python.
I hadn't heard Kids in America in about twenty years, and the first time it came on, I just stopped the car and listened.
I also unsurprisingly love how referential it is. The Vice Street Racer, the "european gang" in Autocide, the Different Strokes-alike TV show, the porn Steven Spielberg, the Donald Love cameo, and so on and so forth.
― Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

― Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)
I sense someone at Rockstar Games has a jones for Trevor Horn, seeing how "Video Killed the Radio Star," "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and "Two Tribes" are on the soundtrack AND he's one of the few real-world people name-checked in the game. (I don't even think Reagan is.)
― Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

There are a lot of people name-checked on the radio in the normal way of things (Gary Numan, Kim Wilde etc). Or is Trevor Horn in the actual plot script as well?
One thing that surprised me were the ads on Wave 103 urging us to enjoy New Wave, go with the flow, do like everyone else. Was New Wave the dominant musical strand at any point in the 80s?
Also Adam 1st's dialogue and rendition is k-classic.
Rockstar North (as they're now called) are scottish, yeah. There were pedestrian models in GTAIII that had strong scottish accents, though any of the actual lines escape me.
― Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)
There are swishy roller skaters by the beach, and the radio ad for Rusty Brown's Donuts is one long gay-specific rimming joke, but there are no MALE whores in this game and this peeves me like nobody's business!
(Isn't it kinda odd that when Vercetti has a private session with an exotic dancer at the Pole Position club, he never actually looks AT the girl but far away to either side?)
― Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)
He's name-checked on the radio, but as a producer (for FGTH) not as a musician. Which is...um...mildly interesting.

http://www.gamereactor.eu/media/30/grandtheftauto_213021.jpgR* have 'officially' said they're not showing anything new at E3 but as it's E3 season all news has to be taken with a huge pinch of salt

either way very excited, would love an updated vice setting.

I am a cynic, honestly I don't really want to see the cartoonish world of Vice City rendered on current generation consoles - do you really want to see that game looking like GTA IV? Vice City was already made, the 80s are overcooked, let's try something different instead...
― Nhex, Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)
Vice City just means Miami. Doesn't mean the 80s. And i don't see what was more cartoonish about Vice City vis-a-vis other GTAs.

ok, 4 was a bit more gritty, Niko doesn't become a kingpin, far from it, and he rues dolefully the world he has found himself in and the things he's done. But ultimately he's a guy doing a daft eastern-european accent hanging around with a rasta and working for babadi-boopty gangsters.

next game is set in 1999, "vice city: nu-metal daze"
― max arrrrrgh, Saturday, 5 June 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)
they've done 80s, 90s, and present day (with RDR in a sense they've done Wild West too). Driver was set in the 70s iirc but surely nothing beyond that to stop them setting it then? otoh 70s would suck?

except 70s miami would probably include a Jimmy Bo Horne song, do it!

i wouldn't mind a vice city set in present day with jetskis and the ability to actually do stuff

I remember getting so frustrated one night at the street race that I kept losing that I used a cheat code, got a tank, and then drove over all of my competitors

Loved this game at the time (might be one of my favourites ever)but I tried it on ipad some years ago and it was... bad... It’s VERY dated.

This game owns half of my brain.
Yeah I hope they revisit this city in a future game.

I got this for Christmas.I found the RC helicopter mission pretty easy. I did it on my third try. The hardest mission so far for me was the one where you have to start a riot. I had about seven goes before I did it.

Can't remember how far I got in this game - it must have been further than this if I just got it for Christmas, cos I played it for weeks - but I never finished it and this was near the end of my time having a serious go at games. I'd pick them up and get to 15% and forget about it, but Vice City was the last of that kind of energy from me, putting a lot of my life into it.

Mission I attempted the most? The one where you and Lance have to lure a police car into a garage to get the cop clothes. Then drive to the Mall, then after you've blown up the shop escape the wanted level. oh my fucking god.
― Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 07:53 (four years ago)
Worse than “demolition man” is perhaps “bombs away” where you control an RC dodo armed with bombs and are tasked with taking out several boats worth of armed Cubans hanging out dockside. If you’re unlucky they will “make a run for it” on the water. Alternately they will do so through the streets of little Havana. Either way you’ll be mashing those controls like never before, lobbying Hail Marys and praying for them to land.
― calstars, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 20:25 (four years ago)
I destroyed many PS2 controllers in frustration during that mission
― Neanderthal, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 20:27 (four years ago)
If you want to progress in the game at all, you have to kill people. I suppose you could just run around from the get go, but there's really not much to do other than violence upon others. it's the whole point of the game. So, I have this for pc too and I'm stuck on the voodoo lady mission where you have to fly the bomb-dropping RC planes. I didn't have much problem w/the copters, but I can't get these damn planes to stay aloft. I get the feeling this task is more difficult on PC than PS@, cause I heard instructions to press back to gain altitude, yet when I press back the plane pulls its nose up for a sec then immediately plummets into the water. Fucking thing.

i got a fake ps2 controller with old usb connection. i think it’s called a logitech action. it works ok with m1 macbook pro running the mobile version of vice city
sometimes you start running or spinning for no reason but it works well enough for my interest and skill levels, this is much better than i was expecting from the reviews
