Vice City!

So at the end of October, Vice City, the follow up to GTA3 on the Playststion 2 is released and I'm excited, especially as I'm just about finished on the first one. Now they're letting you ride motorbikes and hearses. The soundtrack features kool and the gang, Schooly D and Blondie. It looks amazing!!

are you going to buy it? are there any other games to look forward to as much as this?

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't you mean manchester?

Graham (graham), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:09 (twenty-two years ago)

it's based on Miami, but they could set the UK one there, that would be fun, stealing an MG Maestro from the twoccers and ramraiding Stolen from Ivor.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Did you catch the press release about releasing the soundtrack on 7 different CD's at the same time?

Also the nasty new weapons? (srcew-driver, knife, hammer, chainsaw) Why do I feel more uncomfortable about the idea of using these in a game than, say, an Uzi or Rocket Launcher?

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:25 (twenty-two years ago)

not to mention the samurai sword and, by the sound of it ammonia!

great looking cars though.

chris (chris), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 12:29 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm definitely excited...what i always hated about gta3 was the prop buildings that served no purpose...vice city is uspposed to fix this and have missions involved inside buildlings too

jack, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:35 (twenty-two years ago)

if the planes don't fly in this one i'll be v. angers

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 13:43 (twenty-two years ago)

But bob, you can fly the plane in GTA3. It's really hard but possible.
Apparently you can also charter helicopters! Yay!

While I'm in geek mode did you know you can pick up ho's in GTA3?

Simeon (Simeon), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah but that's a pretty lame approximation of "flying" no? also if you use the jump/floating cheat then it flies better but it's still rub. re ho's yeah course! you can get 120 lifepoints doing that.

bob zemko (bob), Tuesday, 1 October 2002 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

if you want to fly, try making a superjump...where you line up a vehicle on the train tracks in portland and the train hits you from behind flinging your car incredible distances, rotations, and often earning $10,000+..often times your car will fly across the sea and land in stauton island

jack, Tuesday, 1 October 2002 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
IT'S HERE!!

so does this get to be the thread where we vent our frustrations at getting stuck for a week on a remote control helicoptor??

tip 1: chasing after someone with a chainsaw is a bad idea, cos you run really slow, switch to fist until you catch them, then (perry to thread) WHIP IT OUT!!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:37 (twenty-two years ago)

mm, chainsaw action. What Steve says is very very true. Also, did you know that golf buggies are the vehicular equivalent of weebles (ie the wobble but don't fall over)

The rc-chopper is very very hard though, but the rc car race is lotsa fun.

This may have become my life.

chris (chris), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:45 (twenty-two years ago)

GREAT GAME, ALMOST DONE WITH IT. THE RC HELICOPTER MISSION TOOK FOREVER, WAIT UNTIL LATER IN THE GAME. UGH! BY THE WAY THE GATLIN GUN SAWS PEOPLE IN HALF.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, i made my golf cart fall over! and catch on fire and everything :)

also chris (V) how come you've finished it in a weekend?? or did you get some sort of advanced copy???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:49 (twenty-two years ago)

also if any random googlers would like to tell us the codes from the music cds, that would be lovely :)))

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Amuricans got it a week early. Obviously I have three days to finish it as I go up North on Thursday night and then start work on MOnday!

Have you finbished it with 100% Chris, or just the missions?

chris (chris), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:53 (twenty-two years ago)

well it's not like you've been put off by watching the cricket or anything is it :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have never understood the appeal of the GTA franchise, but I'm not sure I'll be able to resist the lure of sawing people in half with a GATLIN GUN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 11 November 2002 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

avoid the rounder taxis, they roll like a swiss.

What is this cricket you speak of? I know of no such thing :o(

there's an excellent double jump you can do with the speedy bike, Vicky found it, you fly off a set off stairs, and if you've launched far enough land on yet another ramp, the cut scenes for it look superb

chris (chris), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:01 (twenty-two years ago)

not 100% finished but close, i think i have about three missions left. yes, us americans got it on 10-29!

oh and another great thing is that once you complete a lot of the missions you can get up enough money to buy business's within the island, like the Pole Position Strip Club, which allows you to get lap dances in the backroom. These business's also generate $$ for you on a daily basis.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

cheats spoil it for me, although I did do the tank one on gta3. I've progressed this morning, in fact just spent two hours schlepping around the left hand island, it's bloody huge. And the remote control plane race is k-hard.

I tried jacking a golf cart at one point and I got bumrushed and yanked back out by a trio of angry golf-club-wielding elderly women. They took a chunk out of my armor before I took that as a cue to get the hell out of there. This game is batshit.

Greatest thing ever: rear-ending bikers in a truck going 50 MPH. You will believe a man can fly.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Tuesday, 12 November 2002 18:03 (twenty-two years ago)

it was the golf buggy that I couldn't turn over, not the dune buggy.

excellent move = popping a wheelie in a pjc600, as you head on an infernus or similar and using it as a ramp.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 13 November 2002 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Popping the old wheely, then slammin' handbrake and brake together hellforleather into one massive stoppy, then accelerating out again = classic.

Gettin' a ho to 'rejuvenate' you then beating her over the head with a hammer for yr money = classic. True cashback.

Getting into a car and hearing Billie Jean for 50th time = dud.

Overall = classic.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Where to get the PJC 900? I hear it's in here somewhere. I'm stuck on all my missions: the second Juju woman one, the kill all the Haitians on the boat and steal the briefcases one and the ride the fastest boat for Diaz to pick-up the merch before everyone else one. Hmph. I got my li'l bro on 100 Packages dute though - classic.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

'dute' = Australian word for 'duty'.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

What Blondie song?

Sean (Sean), Sunday, 29 December 2002 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Atomic.

dwh (dwh), Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I got it for Christmas! But I have a hard time playing it without feeling guilty, especially when I hit a woman by accident. I don't even want to think about beating up prostitutes...

As noted above, the RC helicopter mission is a total dud.

mark p (Mark P), Sunday, 29 December 2002 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I got this for Christmas.

I found the RC helicopter mission pretty easy. I did it on my third try. The hardest mission so far for me was the one where you have to start a riot. I had about seven goes before I did it.

Just now I'm stuck on the mission where you have to pick up a gun in the multi storey car park, then you meet some guy in a silver car, and you both go to defend Diaz and his pal from some Cubans. From the pink spot where you're supposed to sit you can't see a thing. I always end up shooting the people I'm supposed to be defending, I think. Last time, when it all kicked off, I tried jumping down to ground level to get a better view, but that didn't work, and the silver car guy at the top of the stairs was nagging me, "Tommy, I could use some help", while seeming not to be doing much himself.

A good thing I did recently was hijack a bus, and drive it to the end of the pier. When the front wheels were over the edge I got off, and gave the bus a nudge to send it very slowly into the sea. All the passengers leapt from the windows into the water. I got to look down and see all these floating corpses and the sinking bus.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Monday, 30 December 2002 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm very nervous to play this game again. after playing it constantly when it came out in oct, my ps2 broke. I went searching for some info on this and discovered other people had the same problems. Vice City burns out the laser in your ps2. be careful not to play it for hours on end. I had to ship my console out to sony for a fix.

Chris V. (Chris V), Monday, 30 December 2002 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

So am I the only one who feels a bit guilty then?

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 30 December 2002 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

seven months pass...
I just ordered the PC version today from amazon.com. I fear for my sanity. And my video card.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

So do I *have* to kill people in this thing? Or is this just the wrong question to ask?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 1 August 2003 01:40 (twenty-one years ago)

If you want to progress in the game at all, you have to kill people. I suppose you could just run around from the get go, but there's really not much to do other than violence upon others. it's the whole point of the game.
So, I have this for pc too and I'm stuck on the voodoo lady mission where you have to fly the bomb-dropping RC planes. I didn't have much problem w/the copters, but I can't get these damn planes to stay aloft. I get the feeling this task is more difficult on PC than PS@, cause I heard instructions to press back to gain altitude, yet when I press back the plane pulls its nose up for a sec then immediately plummets into the water. Fucking thing.

Dan I., Friday, 1 August 2003 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

a light touch works wonders

also, play the game with a gamepad, not the keyboard

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 1 August 2003 04:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I finished the missions whilst off work with flu...
I couldn't belive the cast in the credits, Ray Liotta, Dennis Hopper, Burt Reynolds, Jenna Jameson, Debbie Harry etc, etc

I mean where did Burt come into it?

Where will they go with the next one?

Simeon (Simeon), Friday, 1 August 2003 09:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I am so stuck on the one where you have to shoot up the mall. Like for about three months. I haven't been playing it enough lately though.

Next one = either 70's or bang up to date

chris (chris), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Grenades are probably your best bet there.

Simeon: I don't know if this is what you're asking, but the actual credits are in the back of the book. Burt Reynolds was the property developer, I think.

The Donald Love cameo is priceless.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 1 August 2003 10:32 (twenty-one years ago)

spooky, i just did the mall mission when I went home for dinner. i did it on a motorbike.

Fuzzy (Fuzzy), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The second(third?) mall mission is a complete bastard though. Partly due to the (admirable) decision to not allow you store police bribes at your gaff, so you have to escape your way to the pay'n'spray/sufficient bribes.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 1 August 2003 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

my favorite little detail: the sound of the wind in your ears when you go really fast on a motorcycle.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:50 (twenty-one years ago)

two weeks pass...
I can't stop playing this. Help. Trying to run down people on motorcycles is some of the most fun I've ever had sitting down.

Before this, I never played a modern (ie post-Atari 2600-era) first-person shoot-'em-up or driving game in my life, and my forte is all the wussy Myst/Sim games, so I'm actually amazed how far I've gotten with this -- 21% completion according to the stats. Currently stuck on the bomb-the-fake-Starbuck's mission. It gets way too intense way too fast.

I still dislike running over innocent bystanders or killing women (sometimes, when you run over one, they let out this soulchilling "OH!"), but slicing up gang members with a chainsaw is way fun.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, driving a stolen car to "More Bounce to the Ounce" is just too righteous.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I like picking up a whore, taking her to a deserted place, and then when she get's out kicking the $*%& out of her and getting my money back.

Vicky (Vicky), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:35 (twenty-one years ago)

WHY AM I NOT SPENDING MY WEEK OFF WORK FINISHING THIS???

i'm almost tmepted to start again, since it's been about 6 months since i touched it...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

For anyone wondering what me and Vicky ever saw in each other...

Mark C (Mark C), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:43 (twenty-one years ago)

it ruined my playstation, im never touching it again.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Strangely, it always seems to be the women that are most excited by this aspect of GTA. My ex-flatmate, late of this parish, was mad keen on used whore robbing.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i to have left this sitting on the shelf for a long time - along with all my ps2 games.

I got stuck on the same part as eyeball kicks and i kinda started to lose interest but i may pick it up again

james (james), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm still stuck in SIMS so I haven't played it in a while. Nothing like a game that proves I'm unable to make friends. Boo hoo!

Sarah Mclusky (coco), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Just now I'm stuck on the mission where you have to pick up a gun in the multi storey car park, then you meet some guy in a silver car, and you both go to defend Diaz and his pal from some Cubans.

The key to that mission is fuck the sniper approach and just run back down the steps with a shotgun and kill everyone.

bnw (bnw), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm afraid I got bored of GTA:VC and sold my copy. The flying missions are way too hard and skew the whole gameplay.

gobemouche, Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

there's a military helicopter in the game. with guns. and rockets. it's in the army base after you get all 100 packages. you can do the cop missions with it, idf style. it's the most disgusting thing ever, totally useless for the plot, untouchable from the ground. I love the fact that the designers just wanted this thing in there.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

BNW's got the right idea. Going down the stairs doesn't make you especially more vulnerable to gunfire (though watch that guy running towards you from the south) and lets you get to the scooter (to chase the Haitian dude) a lot quicker.

But wait! Don't kill everyone! You don't want to kill Diaz! You're trying to protect him!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the new Daddino.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

go down the alley and pop that vallium (the red/white pill that makes everything go slooooooow) and then go up the stairs and go to town. aim for the cars not the guys and you will take out 3-4 haitians at once.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 13:59 (twenty-one years ago)

shoot dudes through the windshield as they're pulling up!

other nerd reward: dropping off 100 taxi fares = when you hit the horn in a taxi it will hop like 30 feet in the air. seriously, it's worth the tedium, it's so much fun.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm nearly finished this for the nth time, still making plans for how to play it next. I reckon an attempt with no packages should be fun.

The Airwolf helicopter is also great for the "cause a lot of mayhem" mission for Big Mitch Baker.

I thought the trick to the protecting Diaz mission was the same as most of the rest of the tricks: the mighty Python.

I hadn't heard Kids in America in about twenty years, and the first time it came on, I just stopped the car and listened.

I also unsurprisingly love how referential it is. The Vice Street Racer, the "european gang" in Autocide, the Different Strokes-alike TV show, the porn Steven Spielberg, the Donald Love cameo, and so on and so forth.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the fact that the designers just wanted this thing in there.

I thought you couldn't enter the army base without a cop uniform, and the only way to get one was to complete the cop mission(s).

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The old Daddino thinks Tommy Vercetti is kinda cute in an ugly sort of way. He looks a little like Harry Connick Jr. did in that godawful serial killer movie.

I sense someone at Rockstar Games has a jones for Trevor Horn, seeing how "Video Killed the Radio Star," "Owner of a Lonely Heart," and "Two Tribes" are on the soundtrack AND he's one of the few real-world people name-checked in the game. (I don't even think Reagan is.)

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha. After playing the shit out of this game with my roommies when it first came out, unemployment prompted me to pull it out again last week. Man, what a game. We beat the whole thing pretty quickly, so we started playing vigilante mode exclusively. My roommate has the house record, getting 115 kills on one run (which is INSANE). Since picking it back up, my high score is 65 kills, but I'm getting a feel for it again.

I've never (NEVER!) picked up a whore in this game. Maybe it's time.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:38 (twenty-one years ago)

In GTA3 at least, picking up a whore when you have full health allows you to bump it up all the way to 125, so it's worth doing it before dangerous jobs.

Am I right in thinking that the game is developed by a team in Edinburgh?

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought they were from San Diego. I have no idea why I thought that though.

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't "Poison Arrow" on the soundtrack as well?

There are a lot of people name-checked on the radio in the normal way of things (Gary Numan, Kim Wilde etc). Or is Trevor Horn in the actual plot script as well?

One thing that surprised me were the ads on Wave 103 urging us to enjoy New Wave, go with the flow, do like everyone else. Was New Wave the dominant musical strand at any point in the 80s?

Also Adam 1st's dialogue and rendition is k-classic.

Rockstar North (as they're now called) are scottish, yeah. There were pedestrian models in GTAIII that had strong scottish accents, though any of the actual lines escape me.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 20 August 2003 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never (NEVER!) picked up a whore in this game. Maybe it's time.

There are swishy roller skaters by the beach, and the radio ad for Rusty Brown's Donuts is one long gay-specific rimming joke, but there are no MALE whores in this game and this peeves me like nobody's business!

(Isn't it kinda odd that when Vercetti has a private session with an exotic dancer at the Pole Position club, he never actually looks AT the girl but far away to either side?)

He's name-checked on the radio, but as a producer (for FGTH) not as a musician. Which is...um...mildly interesting.

A soundtrack moment worthy of Scorsese is when "Sister Christian" comes on the radio as somebody's soon-to-be-asassinated wife literally slinks out of a jewelery store and into her death car.

No the hardest misssion in the game by far is "The Driver" towards the end. They give you a Sentinal and you have to win a race against this guy in a fast sports car who has better AI than anything else in the game. Shit is impossible!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 03:00 (twenty years ago)

oo dan i'd forgotten that one! that's like the only hard thing in the damn game. you have to drive it perfectly and just pray the guy hits traffic wrong

g--ff (gcannon), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:30 (twenty years ago)

the bank job is, by far, the hardest mission. i haven't finished it, my posse get shot to ribbons in seconds...

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 07:15 (twenty years ago)

Top tip for 'The Driver': stick a fast car around the first bend, hop out, hop in, win. If you've finished the car dealership missions, the final car will do very well.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 07:37 (twenty years ago)

I couldn't get that method to work. The time it took to hop out of the car and get in your faster car always cost me the race. I ended up lucking out and having him crash badly.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 08:46 (twenty years ago)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:24 (twenty years ago)

I've read in a FAQ that for the Driver mission, you can put your front fender against the side of his back bumper, and then turn into him to spin him out. I've never tried, I got someone else to beat him for me.

I am a cynic, honestly I don't really want to see the cartoonish world of Vice City rendered on current generation consoles - do you really want to see that game looking like GTA IV? Vice City was already made, the 80s are overcooked, let's try something different instead...

Nhex, Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:27 (fifteen years ago)

Vice City just means Miami. Doesn't mean the 80s. And i don't see what was more cartoonish about Vice City vis-a-vis other GTAs.

No disre but maryanne hobbs is peng trust me (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

ok, 4 was a bit more gritty, Niko doesn't become a kingpin, far from it, and he rues dolefully the world he has found himself in and the things he's done. But ultimately he's a guy doing a daft eastern-european accent hanging around with a rasta and working for babadi-boopty gangsters.

No disre but maryanne hobbs is peng trust me (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

max arrrrrgh, Saturday, 5 June 2010 14:36 (fifteen years ago)

they've done 80s, 90s, and present day (with RDR in a sense they've done Wild West too). Driver was set in the 70s iirc but surely nothing beyond that to stop them setting it then? otoh 70s would suck?

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Monday, 7 September 2020 22:32 (four years ago)

Can't remember how far I got in this game - it must have been further than this if I just got it for Christmas, cos I played it for weeks - but I never finished it and this was near the end of my time having a serious go at games. I'd pick them up and get to 15% and forget about it, but Vice City was the last of that kind of energy from me, putting a lot of my life into it.

Mission I attempted the most? The one where you and Lance have to lure a police car into a garage to get the cop clothes. Then drive to the Mall, then after you've blown up the shop escape the wanted level. oh my fucking god.

Two Meter Peter (Ste), Tuesday, 8 September 2020 07:53 (four years ago)

Worse than “demolition man” is perhaps “bombs away” where you control an RC dodo armed with bombs and are tasked with taking out several boats worth of armed Cubans hanging out dockside. If you’re unlucky they will “make a run for it” on the water. Alternately they will do so through the streets of little Havana. Either way you’ll be mashing those controls like never before, lobbying Hail Marys and praying for them to land.

calstars, Tuesday, 8 September 2020 20:25 (four years ago)

I destroyed many PS2 controllers in frustration during that mission

So, I have this for pc too and I'm stuck on the voodoo lady mission where you have to fly the bomb-dropping RC planes. I didn't have much problem w/the copters, but I can't get these damn planes to stay aloft. I get the feeling this task is more difficult on PC than PS@, cause I heard instructions to press back to gain altitude, yet when I press back the plane pulls its nose up for a sec then immediately plummets into the water. Fucking thing.
