my default mode at home is cheddar and tomato ketchup but for preference i'd probably go cheese and onion

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:24 (twelve years ago)

Tempted by the fancy chutney (non-M&S) but it was always going to be pickled onion in the end.

what, just ONE of those?

god in fact just saying it you now, you cannot wack a decent cheese and raw onion sandwich, it's been way too long

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:25 (twelve years ago)

i was going to break out types of onion but i was wary of diluting the onion vote. my dad swears by spanish onion. i would use any onion on hand but by preference maybe red.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 2 August 2013 12:27 (twelve years ago)

Ham

clique- your heels, together (darraghmac), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:28 (twelve years ago)

tend to just keep frozen chopped onions for convenience so i only do a cheese and onion sandwich with spring onion, which isn't the best

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:29 (twelve years ago)

often engage in peanut butter/cheese/pickle shenanigans too

phasmid beetle types (Noodle Vague), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:29 (twelve years ago)

i would probably just end up nibbling on the hunk of cheese by itself

which reminds me, i actually have some in the fridge! that will be my lunch today :)

chutney but not M&S - Patel's ffs

tight in the runs (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:48 (twelve years ago)

Many of these would be good options for me, but the baseline is mayo. An ideal sandwich IMO would also include tomato, some kind of salad green (arugula or spinach would be best), along with sliced onion, pickles and alfalfa sprouts. A few slices of avocado would not go amiss. Bread should be some kind of fresh multigrain.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:49 (twelve years ago)

I am N American but love cheddar cheese sandwiches and was super excited to see cheddar cheese and pickle sandwiches at Pret when I went to London that one time, so I'm voting for relish because I think that's the closest to,what I had. If we were talking toasted cheese, I'd say Marmite.

I honor your cheddar cheese sandwich tradition.

Lawyer... SUAVE... (carl agatha), Friday, 2 August 2013 12:50 (twelve years ago)

And the whole Brit buttered-bread and cheese thing never really won me over, tho I ate a good number of them. Unlike mayo, butter does nothing for the bite of good cheddar.

they all are afflicted with a sickness of existence (Scik Mouthy), Friday, 2 August 2013 13:51 (twelve years ago)

people who haven't spent a lot of time in England don't really get what this sandwich is about I think. I partly get it but I feel like the M&S version I'm used to from gas stations while traveling is, like, the version you only like because you've had decent versions of it at home throughout your life. still, enough of them and you end up making yourself non-grilled cheese-and-one-add'l sandwiches (I went with red onion after reading this thread; it was delicious) for yourself at home.

grilled cheese is the American equivalent I think but it's just totally different really

Despite loving cheese and bread in the vast majority of formulations, I don't really like a plain old cheese sandwich. TOASTED cheese sandwich and I'm in heaven.

Voted Marmite, anyway.

emil.y, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:05 (twelve years ago)

is that sort of the same thing orrrr

I've Seen rRootage (Will M.), Friday, 2 August 2013 14:06 (twelve years ago)

feel like i coulda closed a door ahead of time here by addressing this in op but regular cheese sandwich vs grilled cheese vs toastie, these are all different things with their individual merits. don't be fooled by the superficial similarity.

i eat a fair amount of grilled cheeses. sometimes it is the only veggie option here (new england) in e.g. seafood restaurant. i like 'em. maybe it's how i wuz raised, but i would take a reg cheese sandwich or toastie over them in a heartbeat. that's another poll 4 another time.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:17 (twelve years ago)

also re aero's mention of gas station sandwiches, whenever i go back i always get a wh smith cheese and onion sandwich from the same motorway services on the ride up from heathrow.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:20 (twelve years ago)

i like this kind of cheese sandwich and i also like grilled or toasted ones but they are quite different. i mostly eat these with little sliced sweet tomatoes (grape or heirloom) but i also like them plain or with vegemite or with slices of granny smith apple (apple is best on very fresh white bread or baguette). and i always butter the bread.

estela, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:27 (twelve years ago)

the one thing i'd insist on above all else would be cold, sliced dill pickle. not on your list, sadly ("relish" being a very different thing).

mustard = sadface runner up

pickled gherkin = a 'cold wally' in the uk

Ward Fowler, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

really not enough love for the cheese and vegemite (or, if you must, marmite) ITT

tight in the runs (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Friday, 2 August 2013 14:45 (twelve years ago)

My preference is; grated mature cheddar cheese + grated hard-boiled egg + small amount of mayo on granary. On the poll I'd go for Branston, I'd usually add lettuce, tomato + cucumber.

mmmm, Friday, 2 August 2013 14:47 (twelve years ago)

first instinct said chutney just because I love chutney but after this morning's in-house thread-inspired sandwich I have to go with onion. specifically red onion, yellow or white is just not the same. if this were a grilled cheese sandwich, tomato would win this going away, but it's not, so onion. vegemite a close second

http://www.ask.com/question/why-is-a-gherkin-called-a-wally

Ward Fowler, Friday, 2 August 2013 15:05 (twelve years ago)

i threw the meat product option in there just to try to account for my own personal biases but i don't understand what kind of meat would result in a "cheese and x" sandwich as opposed to "x and cheese". us style bacon i can see i guess. is someone out there putting potted beef paste on a cheese sarnie?

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 2 August 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)

Gherkins are vegetables similar to cucumbers, both in shape and nutritional value. The basic reason as to why gherkins are called wallies may be because they have a similar shape.

This answers NONE of my questions.

emil.y, Friday, 2 August 2013 15:06 (twelve years ago)

I think it's an East London chip-shop thing. The etymology seems to be a mystery though.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 2 August 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

I feel like a fake Britisher now. Trying desperately to make sense of it... "well, it's a similar shape to a WILLY?!"

emil.y, Friday, 2 August 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

further down on that Ask page someone claims that British colloquial term for Gherkin, slang corruption of Olive. Both Gherkins & Olives sold in barrels which were referred to as wallies. but who knows eh? The 'cold' prefix appears to be a Dartford Chip Shop variant, which is where I first encountered the term.

My last day in London and I decided to take a huge gamble and try this cheese sandwich with pickled onions, mayo, sprouts on it from Pret. Not bad, but still doesn't have the feel of a cheese sandwich.

by sprouts I'm sure you don't mean sprouts

alfalfa probly

do we have alfalfa in the uk? i don't remember. maybe we call it something else. maybe we just eat cress instead.

It's something that looked sprout like. But it could have been anything. Anything!

Cress. Too tempting even for Jesus.

three weeks pass...

been so into cheddar/mustard/branston sandwiches lately.
i am having one now. with beer.

i guess i'd just rather listen to canned heat? (ian), Saturday, 31 August 2013 17:06 (twelve years ago)

the only real problem is that wifey accidentally bought non-sharp cheddar instead of the usual english stuff i love so much.

non-sharp cheddar - or "mild" in our parlance - takes the shine off it a bit tho

i thought about slicing some onion too but i decided i didn't want to get too wild.

yeah i think onion + Branston wd probly be overkill

Cheese and tomato sandwich is sublime

I think the reason non grilled cheese sandwiches aren't as popular in the USA is because the bread is too sweet

badg, Saturday, 31 August 2013 19:03 (twelve years ago)

I thought it was because the cheddar isn't that great

i thought it was because we like actual sandwiches

grated… egg??

j., Saturday, 31 August 2013 22:27 (twelve years ago)

Grate some mature cheddar cheese, grate a hard-boiled egg on top. Mix them up a bit. I quite often add a small amount rapeseed mayo to bind, and finely chopped chives. Use as sandwich filling. Nice.
