plus these songs aren't really similar, my much superior dare i say genius original thread examined two songs that came out in close proximity to each other, originated from the same obscure corner of the globe, and have somehow both proved to be persistent on radio/in the larger culture. c'mon man.

yeah in retrospect 'zombie' just a run of the mill shit altrock song w/ a hideous chorus, it's no worse than our lady peace or whatever. i'd be surprised if there are ten songs to hit #1 on the mainstream rock chart this century that are better than it. i think at the time i mainly hated it cuz this band i'd enjoyed as a very poor man's the sundays came back and scored a huge hit as candlebox performs a tribute to u2's war. it was a very key 'ok so this altrock revolution definitely wasn't worth it' moment.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:21 (twelve years ago)

I loved the music in the 90s (well early 90s to mid 90s) and will defend it to the end of earth but fucking hell it did have some of the worst music ever.

..it would have sounded about as heavy as Talulah Gosh. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 5 August 2013 18:22 (twelve years ago)

I've recently been doing a nostalgia project of sorts which involved listening to every Now! of the 90s and also cataloguing every top 40 single of the 90s. I'd agree with the above, as we get to 1999 it's just utter, utter, stinking waste. I hadn't realised how much of my most hated music came from the same year.

kinder, Monday, 5 August 2013 18:23 (twelve years ago)

lol aero i have the same reaction watching 90s music vids, i posted the ll cool j vid for 'deepest bluest' the other day, a shitty soundtrack vid for a second tier would be summer hit movie, and was blown away by how much money had clearly been spent just as a matter of routine (it's not like it was an especially ambitious, costly video, it wasn't 'earth song' or whatever), couldn't imagine any video today - timberlake, beyonce, whoever - getting the kind of budget circa 1999 ll cool j got for his song about a shark.

zombie is a solid tune, kind of ridiculous but its hooks don't really annoy me, though i think it does make one forget the cranberries had a pretty fun sundays-style first album. 'breakfast at tiffany's' is just horrible.

"Breakfast at Tiffany's" is sung from the point of view of a man who is on the verge of breaking up with his girlfriend on the basis that the two have nothing in common. Desperate to find something, the man brings up the Audrey Hepburn film Breakfast at Tiffany's, and his girlfriend recalls that they "both kinda liked it." He argues that this should serve as enough motivation for them to work out their problems based on the notion that love will always find a way to make things work.

there's dire music in any era and some of it will score big in any era oft times for reasons that have nothing to do w/ music. 1966 and 1984 are maybe the two best years for top 40 in the past half century and even there you've got 'ballad of the green berets' and 'i just called to say i love you' hitting #1.

"I Know" is like a bargain Bill Withers track, the 90s production trappings are grating enough but the vibe is good and the tune's good - I think of that sort of thing as what I liked about the mid-nineties, a holdover from the early 90s easy-groove sensibility

1966 and 1984 are maybe the two best years for top 40 in the past half century

however I'm always happy to pile onto some terrible 90s jams. tho tbh I wish we could do the same thing with terrible 80s jams but everybody loves those

otm, I was weighing the feasibility of a poll between Steve Winwood "Higher Love" vs 10,000 Maniacs "What's the Matter Here?" vs Tracy Chapman "Fast Car" and the thing is that I still really like all of them.

We come from different worlds
You like to laugh at me
When I look at other girls
Sometimes you're crazy
And you wonder why
I'm such a baby
Cause the Dolphins make me cry
[Chorus:]
Well there's nothing I can do
I only wanna be with you
You can call me your fool
Only wanna be with you
Put on a little Dylan
sitting on a fence
I say that line is great
You ask me what I meant by
"Said I shot a man named Gray
Took his wife to Italy
She inherited a million bucks
And when she died it came to me
I can't help it if I'm lucky"
Only wanna be with you
Ain't Bobby so cool
Only wanna be with you
[Solo]
Yeah I'm tangled up in blue
Only wanna be with you
You can call me your fool
Only wanna be with you
Sometimes I wonder
If it will ever end
You get so mad at me
When I go out with my friends
Sometimes you're crazy
And you wonder why
I'm such a baby yeah
The Dolphins make me cry
Well there's nothing I can do
Only wanna be with you
You can call me your fool
Only wanna be with you
Yeah I'm tangled up in blue

Hootie & the Blowfish is an American rock band that formed in 1986 at the University of South Carolina by Darius Rucker, Dean Felber, Jim Sonefeld, and Mark Bryan. As of July 2010, the band had charted sixteen singles on various Billboard singles charts and recorded five studio albums; and their 1994 debut album, Cracked Rear View, was the 16th-best-selling album of all time in the US, having been certified platinum 16 times. The group was especially popular in Canada, having three number-one singles in the country.[1] They have sold over 20 million albums in the United States alone.

wow, this thread has spilled all over the map. would be into a hootie singles poll.

Deep Blue Something would make a better matchup with Dishwalla, for sure. I think their song is way less objectionable than "Zombie" as it's very clearly a more paisley-colored 'college rock' band of a few years earlier that bumbled their way into having a hit alt-rock song. They're a fallen version of James or a distant knockoff of REM; the Cranberries don't really enter into it I think. The lyrics are dumb, but the only real sin here is that the thing goes on for four and a half minutes with seemingly eighty repetitions of the chorus - chop it down to size and it's a pleasantly forgettable ditty.

"Zombie" is a trudge but it's fun to sing along to, precisely for how ridiculous the delivery is on "in your HEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD." I also missed the era of its ubiquity so it was kind of an interesting curiosity to discover it, after the fact, via the To The Faithful Departed singles and hearing "Linger" at the grocery store. It's surely the worst Cranberries hit but I don't hate it the way other ILXors seem to.

"I Just Shot John Lennon" by The Cranberries

It was the fearful night of December 8th.
He was returning home from the studio late.
He had perceptively known that it wouldn't be nice.
Because in 1980, he paid the price.

John Lennon died. [X6]

With a Smith & Wesson 38,
John Lennon's life was no longer a debate.

He should have stayed at home,
He should have never cared,
And the man who took his life declared,

He said I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

DOLORES O'RIORDAN LYRICS

"Loser"

I'm sick and tired of people like you
You think you're clever but you haven't a clue
(what can you do?)

A two watt light bulb is brighter than you
I'm sick and tired of people like you

You want it, you got it
Come take it, it's over here
You want it, you got it
Come take it, is that not clear?
You want it, you got it
Come take it, I'll do it for you
You want it, you got it
Come take it, just cross the line

The moral of the adventure is this
Take me for granted you are taking the piss
(Who love is this?)

I'd rather wind up with nothing at all
Than take a loser like you through it all

You want it, you got it
Come take it, it's over here
You want it, you got it
Come take it, is that not clear?
You want it, you got it
Come take it, I'll do it for you
You want it, you got it
Come take it, just cross the line

Cross the line

Why loser, why?
Die Loser, die.

a bit too late to deal with the actual poll question, but, so bad it's funny vs just fucking bad. just fucking bad is probably worse (tiffany's obv) and it gets stuck in my head every so often for some reason so it definitely gets my hate-vote

interesting that these songs are both 1995 to USians whereas on this side of the Atlantic iirc they were '94 (Zombie) and '96 and felt like a lifetime apart to me. meanwhile 2003 feels like yesterday. aging, huh.

also I love that terrible Primitive Radio Gods song. and ENBB is right that the Cranberries are terrible apart from one song but I pick "Linger" as their one non-terrible song even though the vocals still make me want to tweeze all my fingernails out and shove them down my ears.

confession: a friend talked me into going to see Eels this month so, you know, disregard my opinion on everything 90s

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 6 August 2013 01:03 (twelve years ago)

ok a friend of mine (who you may have met once, i know he came to a monkees power hour at indie rock karaoke once) works in radio, almost exclusively sports radio, but at the time (1999) he would pick up these weekend graveyard shifts at 99x from time to time. he was quitting that though and really wasn't worried about burning bridges there so his last shift we went down after hitting a couple of bars before hand and after an hour or so and after a few test shots to see if any of the suits or whatever were listening we just played what we felt like, all within reason all stuff that it was plausible 99x would play either cuz they did sorta at one point or in a parallel universe where 'cut yr hair' had really blown up in 94 maybe altrock radio would've been like this five years later - ton of local stuff (i remember macha went over really well and i was fielding calls from listeners wondering what it was they had to have it and having to explain to them what and where criminal records was), matador and kill rock stars stuff, nothing too surprising (though i do remember we played 'hobo humpin slobo babe' like every hour at my insistence). weirdly the station didn't 'track' (otherwise they wouldn't have needed someone to come in and work the graveyard shift) but they did have a typed playlist of what specifically was to be played when and some of that made the cut (well, 'steal my sunshine' did). anyhow i'm bored and wandering around the offices and there's signed framed posters everywhere, ppl like 311 etc and i can remember behind this old xerox machine in the back and behind it on the floor were framed signed posters from patti smith and bjork (there were others too i just specifically remember those cuz of the outrage). so then i'm wandering around and i'm in the program director's office and i've got to piss. and i have no idea where the bathroom is and i know nobody's going to be in here until monday so i just pissed all over his office floor. anyhow that's my 99x story. i'm not like esp proud of it but at the same time i'm not michael j fox at the end of casualties of war over it either.

For some reason I distinctly remember Rick Dees making fun of Julian Lennon when he appeared on Solid Gold to sing "Valotte". He was all, "I thought 'sitting on a pebble' was a silly lyric until I saw Julian's butt. It is really that small!"

This is my lasting Julian Lennon memory, despite once owning his first two albums on cassette.

omg balls. Great story. No, you've never told me that before, and I didn't drink back then so I would remember! Somehow it's the shamed shuttering of ye olde college rock that most sticks out to me, although I do love, for ''moral victory'' reasons, the idea that 99X's listenership would have gone gaga for indie rock if it'd only been presented to then. (Tangent: they did introduce me to the Apples in Stereo through their 'Cage Match' feature playing ''Seemed So,'' and a year or so later they became the first band I ever saw at a club, notwithstanding the opener Azure Ray.)

Maybe it's because I just rewatched The Big Lebowski but the late 90s filter, the rug-pissing story, and call all destroyer echoing John Goodman ''say what you will about the tenets of National Socialism, at least it's an ethos ...there's a pattern here, man. Lotta ins, lotta outs.

I'm only speaking for myself, its more the idea I think multiple pollls of results of polls are a bit sad. I was concerned it'd snowball into a pile of pollsanity. Dont GAF what I think tho. Carry on.

tbh I mostly was drawn to this thread because it finally gave me a place to spew my hatred towards this song.

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 01:26 (twelve years ago)

(BAT, that is)

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 01:27 (twelve years ago)

understandable

..it would have sounded about as heavy as Talulah Gosh. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 13:46 (twelve years ago)

hate both of these, voted breakfast at tiffany's. in junior high i carpooled with a family to school and they had the single of this song with all the different versions and listened to it all the time. fuuuuuck this song sucks

marcos, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 14:02 (twelve years ago)

aahahhhghhg new glimpses of hell

slippery kelp on the tide (a passing spacecadet), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:31 (twelve years ago)

I mean at least Zombie is laughable and you can you can totally sing your own overwrought ridiculous version making fun of it, whereas that other song, whose title I don't even want to type, is just patently horrible with no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

quincie, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:34 (twelve years ago)

Well OK Neanderthal's revised lyrics were good, but that is the sole mitigating factor here.

quincie, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:35 (twelve years ago)

the BAT video did have some unintentional LOLs.

Like after every chorus, one of the guitar players did one of those patented rock star "leaps", as if he was playing some fiery cock-rock riff and not some shitty arpeggio that sounds like a MIDI file

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:38 (twelve years ago)

I love the way that the singer is carrying around a book (Breakfast at Tiffany's, one reasonably assumes) at the beginning, looking all 90s sensitive guy.

The Butthurt Locker (cryptosicko), Wednesday, 7 August 2013 17:55 (twelve years ago)

was there a pejorative term coined for the type of rock that Dog's Eye View and Deep Blue Something made?

Better Than Ezrock

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:13 (twelve years ago)

I actually could tolerate CS a lot more in that middling "soft rock" mode, as opposed to their laughable attempts to rock a la "Where the River Goes"....

Neanderthal, Wednesday, 7 August 2013 22:14 (twelve years ago)

Start a thread, now, baby just spit me out.

Kinda shocking. Sorta thought ILX's hatred of the Cranberries was, well, the one thing we'd got.

Doctor Casino, Wednesday, 14 August 2013 01:17 (twelve years ago)

man, not quite Tyson - Spinks, but a trouncing nonetheless.

4 Non-Blondes "What's Up" vs Edie Brickell "What I Am"

judging songs by what the spin doctors would think, what the hell, that is just perverse

The BAT chorus is rough, but its the versus that make you want to drive into oncoming traffic.

rip van wanko, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:06 (nine years ago)

The chorus is like stream of consciousness horseshit.

Also the guitarist looked like a dork in the vid...ferociously leaping to strum his three clean chords

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:09 (nine years ago)

in 8th grade i carpooled to school with a family that had the BaT single and they would listen to it every single morning over and over, all the different versions on it, like we would drive to school every day and listen to breakfast at tiffany's every fucking day

marcos, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:11 (nine years ago)

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:14 (nine years ago)

You know Casey Kasem had to be saying "are you fucking kidding me?" every week.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:15 (nine years ago)

damn it's traumatizing just reading that anecdote.

nomar, Monday, 11 January 2016 01:17 (nine years ago)

thanks to a C90 I had, in my head BaT will forever segue into "..
