surely i'm not the only one who doesn't want one?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

*pssst non-drugdealer on ilxor, act straight-edge till he wanders off*

mark s (mark s), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

hurhur.
but surely mobile phone = crucial evidence?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Hold on a second, hon -- MARK & GREG, SHUT UP!! CAN'T YOU SEE I'M ON THE PHONE? -- ok, baby, he's gone. Can you wear the black one? I really love that one...

Colin Meeder (Mert), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I have no mobile phone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:51 (twenty-two years ago)

woohoo!

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I just ordered a new one, so I may or may not have one right now.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Jonnie hasn't got one and it's bloody annoying

chris (chris), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don;t have one but I want one.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have one, but now and then I think I'd kinda like one so I could tell people when I'm late. Though all my friends should know by now that I am always late. Or 15 mins early.

Elisabeth (Elisabeth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I have one thank god. I have no shame about having one nor do I have any time for people complaining about them in some kind of high moral ground attempt.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i just don't get it... i get annoyed enough when my home phone rings, without carrying one around with me all day. why do so many people have them???

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I love it when my friends call me, or text me, or whatever.

The mobile phone has meant none of us have to make arrangements any more, surely a good thing.

Also mine is cow-coloured.

Tim (Tim), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:45 (twenty-two years ago)

this ain't no moral high ground attempt... i know i ain't shit. and i ain't complaining about them. i was just wondering about the ratio of owners to non-owners.

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I forgot mine on Monday, the lack of arrangements means you're screwed if you do this. Don't worry Greg, I was thinking more of people who go on rants about how dreadful it is that everyone has a mobile phone, or rants about text messages, you know that kind of tired social columnist type stuff? Note to self, no more reading the Irish Independent.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

i have one and it's great becuase they're handy. handier than finding change and a working pay phone, handier than only being able to talk to your friends when they are sitting in their houses, handy when you are on a train that's delayed and you can let the person who is coming to meet you know so they aren't stuck waiting around for you, handy for when you all arrange to meet in one pub but get there and decide you don't want go there after all and so can tell the latecomers where you've all gone to instead. handy.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have a mobile phone, but I sure want a beeper tie!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I technically own one (I bought it), but don't carry or use one.
This will probably change when they start coming with GPS as standard. (Where am I and where is the nearset pub?)

Simeon (Simeon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

i have 2, but i won't be taking either with me to america because they are not tri-band:(

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

what the hell is tri-band?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

In most countries, GSM mobile phones operated on the 900 and 1800 MHz bands, and most phones only support these two (dual-band). In America and a few other countries the GSM network operates on 1900MHz instead and you need a tri-band phone that works on all three to use it, and not many European phones do.

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

< /dork >

Graham (graham), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have one & am (thankfully) now less bloody smug about the fact. The only reason I'm holding off is costs - ie my brother has these insane $200 phone bills each month . . .
(haha & I'm the sort of nutter who'll run from club to club looking for people if arrangements haven't been made)

Ess Kay (esskay), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I have six and am about to buy a seventh.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have one. i think for the following reasons:
1)i've sometines been guilty of being 'anti'stuff for no good reason (maybe with mobys it's a residue from the time when only cock knockers had them).
2)i hate the sound of phones ringing/bleeping.
3)the sight of people in pubs/restaurants/on trains feverishly texting has always put me off.
4)i don't always want to be contactable.

however, i'm mellowing towards them and may even, ooeer, get one.

michael wells (michael w.), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I am always AGOG when An American sez 'ohmigosh you can TEXT MESSAGE???? ohmigod you mean you can DOWNLOAD RINGTONES???' aww bless. However, kids in Finland are no doubt looking at us texting and saying "ohmigod I can't believe they are using their FINGERS to text rather than DIRECTLY BEAMING YORE THORTS INTO THE MAINFRAME, aww bless".

Sarah (starry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

But don't they make the side of your head go all funny? And doesnt that make you worry if in 30 years time we'll all suddently get brain cancer?

they're bloody useful, but...

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have one. no plans to ever have one. i think pay phones are on the out - i couldn't find one in downtown seattle the other day.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

4)i don't always want to be contactable

Yeah, I have to say this is paramount with me. When I'm on the bus to and from work (say), I prefer reading or thinking or whatever rather than chatting on the phone. I keep a regular enough schedule that people know where to find me -- and if I'm out, I've got an answering machine. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

i have mine on silent

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

what Ned said

Jeff W (Jeff W), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have one mainly to annoy my friends.

E-mail is for arranging stuff.

Pete (Pete), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Being always contactable means I can work from home so that's classic, even though on days like today it means an endless stream of telephonic nonsense.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i have one in the us which i reactivate whenever i'm there
i'm the only person in addis without one, even all my cab drivers have one
i want one which works globally, just latches on to local service (they exist but are dammn expensive)

i love mobiles but one thing they have done is make appointments superfluos 'coz you can always call to cancel/delay etc

H (Heruy), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

maybe with mobys it's a residue from the time when only cock knockers had them

Does Moby know about this?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

but ned, jeff, michael, if you don't want to be contactable you just switch your mobile off. see, easy.

angela (angela), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

but what would be the point of having a mobile that's always off?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

A mobile that's off = you can call people whenever you want, but they can't call you = YOU HAVE THE POWER.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

if you don't want to be contactable you just switch your mobile off

But if I'm otherwise near a phone when I want to be contactable, the need for a mobile phone always turned off is a bit odd. Though I appreciate that way of using a phone from a bloody-minded point of view. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

i might get one if i had to pay for phone service anyhow. my phone has been free for the past five years so i'm spoiled

ron (ron), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't have one because i BLOODY LIKE being uncontactable, and when my phone rings i am crap at ignoring it EVEN if i don't want to talk, and feel morally impelled to pick it up even if i am like in the bath or something and it's well annoying, sometimes i want to be left ALONE WAHHH!! and the ringtones are usually incredibly annoying and there's nothing worse than sitting on the train/bus on your way home after a taxing day and some FUCKER is yammering away, i mean they wouldn't just come up to you and VOLUNTEER information about their lives, would they? so why shout all about them, do they think no-one can hear or something? GRRR. however i am sympathetic to people who KEEP IT SHORT, i mean i do appreciate that they can be v useful eg. if you are running late or something. *sigh* i miss my pager, that way ppl could contact me and i wouldn't have to talk or anything, and i cd ring them back if i needed to...

katie (katie), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you don't need to turn it off! put it on silent, then you can see who has rung you without disturbing your day to day activities

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 14:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i had a mobile phone (or cell phone for us) for a brief period last year. i really enjoyed the way it looked on the table at the coffee shop next to a pack of b&h gold and a large latte. it also looked really good on my ikea desk at the office (or my similarly-hued ikea desk at home). i also enjoyed the way it added value and meaning to the conversations i had while walking briskly around downtown and all the other moments where the fear of being alone with my own thoughts were so great that i thought "i'd better call somebody up".

ultimately i left it in a taxi cab and two weeks later i realized that my quality of life had improved substantially. ahhhh! i think part of the frivolity of mobile phones in canada comes from the fact that you can still put 35 cents in a payphone and talk as long as you like to any local phone number (mobile or not).

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't. i never wanted one and i am happy abt not taking part in this fad. i don't want to talk all the time dammit! email is much better. having things in writing is grebt!!!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

So does anyone else get that 'early cancer warning sign' feeling in the side of their head when they use one?

jon (jon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Only if the person I'm talking to is really boring.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

why do americans dont like mobiles?

vic (vicc13), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

fields of salmon - 35 cents?? i swear the last time i used a payphone it was still a quarter! (although that was months or possibly years ago)

no cell phone for me either. i used one the other day that was the size of a breath mint - i'd lose it within hours if i had one. anyway i never answer the phone at home so why drag that habit out into the world. besides, there are only two or three people i ever need to reach urgently and when i do i use telepathy.

the actual mr. jones (actual), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i have a mobile, but it's not essential to my day to day existence.

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, nevermind these new-fangled gadgets....if anyone wants to get a hold of me they can send a nice old-fashioned email.

Miss Laura, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

why do americans dont like mobiles?

I thought Washington was full of cell phones and their users...and then I went to Boston. The nation's capitol is in its infancy when it comes to cell phones.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, they are always using cell phones in dawsons creek these days.

I thought, geography was the biggest problem re: mobiles in the US. IE networking problems?

jel -- (jel), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, another issue regarding cell phones in the U.S. is that the local phone companies are comparatively quick and efficient at installing land line service. In some other countries the phone companies aren't as responsive, and therefore it becomes more efficient to get a mobile instead of land line service.

(For my part, I have a cell phone, primarily for work, but my agency has a knack for calling me when just when I can't take the call.)

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I got one primarily for work and now I wish had gotten one sooner. It's so convenient. With my plan. it's cheaper to make long distance phone calls than with a regular phone. The only annoying thing is that people don't bother turning off their cell phones.

Micheline Gros-Jean (Micheline), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

My dad doesn't have one, I just bought him one as b'day gift and he asked me to take it back - my mum went nuts said he was nast-ee, now I feel bad....

Plinky (Plinky), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

mr. jones -- i live in edmonton, and so strong is telus' grip over our communications grid that i'm sure they decided to notch the payphone rate up ten cents just for gags. i rarely have exactly thirty-five cents so telus more often than not gets fifty of my hard earned pennies.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't got one. I just can't be arsed w/thee hassle.

N0RM4N PH4Y, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

My then-wife bought me one a few years back. I wasn't terribly grateful, but it has been handy loads of times. I like being contactable.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I have one, but I never remember to turn it on unless I need to use it, and unless I'm expecting someone to call me back, I turn it off when I'm done

luna.c (luna.c), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 19:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Just don't use it while your driving. There's enough stupid people causing accidents while they're not on talking on a cell phone

Sshh, don't tell them about the teleporters we Brits use all the time.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

i have no mobile phone.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 2 October 2002 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

When my old man retired last year he offered me his mobile phone, free of charge, already connected, the lot. I declined and advised him to put it in the Trading Post.

Being contactable sounds like it would be great, would make you feel really important, but then the novelty would wear off. I estimate that process would take anything up to five minutes for most reasonably well-adjusted people.

I would like to debunk two popular myths about mobiles:

a) If you turn your 'call receive' function off, your brain does NOT automatically turn off its 'breathe' function at the same time. You will not die.

b) The normal corollary of the 'user pays' principle ('payer uses') DOES still apply in the case of mobiles. In other words, just like the TV, the motor car or anything else, you pay for it, you decide when to turn it on. Not whoever feels they have the right to 24/7 access to you just because once you were stupid/drunk/subservient enough to give them your number.

Lately I've heard that various places in the US are considering making it ILLEGAL to let your mobile go off in 'places of public performance or entertainment'. Instant fines of $100US - not enough! Capital punishment I say!!!

BJ, Wednesday, 2 October 2002 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No mobile phone, don't want one, will fight to the death to avoid getting one. For every time it would come in handy there's another time I want to strangle someone for sending text messages while I'm trying to have a serious conversation with them.

I've got a bricky old Nokia, the kind you're meant to put a paper bag over, that I've had for about two years. Thing is, I always get really gd reception on it, and it does everything I need it to do, so I'm hoping that it'll soon be thought of as a retro design classic...

People get frustrated when you don't have one, like 'WHAT? You have to be at HOME for me to reach you?' They seriously get angry! Can we just have faith I still exist if I'm not in my house? Also I don't much care for picking up the phone at home if it's someone I don't want to talk to. I also don't listen to phone messages. This hasn't lost me any friends or money, so I'm happy with the arrangement.

four years pass...

i am finally starting to feel embarrassed that i still have a regular cell phone. it's one of those flip-phones that people would've been pretty excited about 12 years ago. i didn't care for a while -- even preferred it, and enjoyed having some separation from the internet -- but now it feels like i'm in a lonely position. well, i guess my parents, my wife, and a couple of my siblings are in the same boat, but then it just feels like i come from this weird family that hasn't caught up with the times. outside my family i pretty much never see anyone doesn't have a smartphone at this point.

the weirdness/annoyance of it occurs to me most often when i'm texting, it's such a pain in the ass to text on a regular cell phone. i know i'll update at some point but i don't feel like spending the extra money, either. i'm on a computer 8 hours a day for work anyway so that's been the main reason i haven't gotten one.

any other ilxors that still don't have one? what are your reasons?

marcos, Monday, 19 May 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

no smartphone, no cellphone; i very often like to be left alone

and "owned" is obviously a loose phrase here, I don't really own it

Like Aimless, I have a no-contract prepaid flip phone and I don't plan on upgrading any time soon. The only time I ever feel like I'm behind the times is when I'm texting, which happens very rarely. I primarily use the house phone and e-mail to get in touch with people; I mainly carry the cell phone around for emergencies.

Not having a smartphone or a mobile phone sounds like bliss to me. Last Friday I was with a colleague who accidentally dropped his Blackberry. He looked genuinely disappointed when he picked it up and the screen hadn't shattered. I asked whether he was due an upgrade and he told me that it would have been a good excuse for a quiet, work-free weekend...

I switched to an Android about fifteen months ago after years of flip phone. I worried it would change my texting/surfing habits. It hasn't.

I still have a house line! I get more calls on it than on the cellphone.

ha, I wish for a similar death to my blackberry, but only because I desperately would love an upgrade, I'm not at all flooded with calls

we still have a landline at home, although we recently cancelled our long distance plan

My 10 year old Nokia phone is now held together with a rubber band, and it conks out approximately 4 minutes into calls. I'll keep going to the bitter end with it though. Why? I have no idea.

i think they feel it'd be impractical for them (which maybe it would be) and that someone would hack it to get their credit card number or something weird

Even if I didn't have a mobile phone I think I'd still enjoy the convenience of a computer I can put in my pocket. And so to have the phone piece tagged on as An afterthought is fine with me.

get a handheld gps, they are cool to hold in your hand and the battery lasts way longer than a phone
