implantation is a big deal as with all body modifcation
it reasonably follows that people who do it feel much more comfortable in their new body
it reasonably follows that they are not participating in a fad as expressing strongly-held aspects of their selves
it reasonably follows that they are not expressing a choice so much as an internal mandate and that the implants must therefore be understood as absolutely part of their physical nature

"So, is that your internal mandate, or are you just glad to see me?"
― Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)
No, it doesn't. Body modification does not automatically make people feel more comfortable in their bodies; see as counterexample the non-negligible number of people who keep doing it, whether it be full-body tattoos or repeated plastic surgeries or what have you. For a demonstrable subset, there is no end point, rather they are asymptotically approaching "comfortable".
― a dessicated quasi-tsunami of gut-busting cosmic - tech (DJP), Friday, 25 October 2013 15:23 (twelve years ago)
And that isn't a value judgment although I realize it sounds like one; whether it's good or bad for others to modify their bodies is none of my personal business. If the results looks stupid to me, I reserve the right to have an honest reaction to them.
(Having said that, reading that the bagel thing is supposed to look dumb and that it's nonpermanent has cemented it as my favorite thing on display here)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdermal_implant
Klara Jirkova, a student at the Berlin University of the Arts, raised the possibility of using subdermal implants to create "Braille tattoos" readable by the blind. She proposes that small implants could be grouped to form braille characters, which she says "can be read by touch – stroke by blind people.[7] She suggests that, if located near the thumb where they could be read during a handshake, "Braille tattoos" could help the blind recognize whom they are greeting. She states that this will be a more meaningful form of body modification as it relates to the sense of touch instead of sight.[7]Despite the media attention Jirkova's proposal received, this application of subdermal implants is, at best, impractical. A "braille tattoo" as a form of identification between the blind would be extraneous, as the blind can easily identify others by speaking to them. Such a procedure would have a low success rate, as the implants would most likely shift during healing.[8][better source needed] The smooth, round implants Jirkova suggests are especially prone to shifting and it is likely that a "Braille tattoo" would migrate to the point of being unreadable. The commonly seen "Braille tattoo" image is a photo manipulation from Jirkova's report, not a successfully completed modification.Although individual ball implants would present too many problems due to migration, flat premade square silicone "character" sheets with pre-positioned dots would solve the readability problems. These individual square sheets could be preformed and implanted with the desired effect.[original research?]

maybe part of the issue here is that people go from tattoos to piercings to subdermal as a kind of progression, and so the end results look really "busy" and cluttered- like honestly I think the the satyr horn things look kinda cool in a circus freak/ dionysian goat person way, but when they're dumped on top of manic panic hair and a tacklebox face of too many lip piercings then the end result is just crappy and trashy and counterculture-as-kitsch, like you wind up looking like a Godsmack roadie or something. maybe that sounds classist but it's really just a question of aesthetics. The other big problem with the subdermal stuff isthat there's always a pretty noticable insertion scar where the object got shoved in and even though they heal, they're supernoticeable and detract from the effect of an uncanny object just surfacing from the skin.
mostly they all just remind me of:

I am not militating for anything or joining any dialectic! Whatever, I have no opinions, people can do what they like with their bodies, it's cool. All of us are engaged in some form of "externalizing the true self," and there are areas (like gender presentation) where it's really life-or-death important to let people find their own ways of being in our culture.
The only thing I'd pick on here is the culture itself, which I think sometimes overvalues "externalization of true self" to the point where it's less interested in using bodies to be something, and more interested in using them to present as that thing. That's the weird backdrop we're working against, and whatever people need to do to find a place of comfort in it is their business.

okay, yeah, busted, that looks like a classic sleight of hand move there
maybe there's some middleaged / aging hipster disavowal going on here, but, I mean, I have eleven tattoos, I'm not some snob about doing stuff to your body, it's all a question of whether stuff that you do to your body looks fucking stupid or not
of course, mileage may vary- but I think if you're going to do something super intense to the form of your body, then maybe having lots of nearby other things that you also did to your body just takes away from the power of the formal change, and that happens when somebody has five face piercings AND goat horns. maybe just take out the face piercings and rock the horns?

The bagel forehead is not a subdermal implant, it's injections of saline that temporarily make the skin bloat.
The saline just gets absorbed into the bloodstream after time.
― Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Friday, 25 October 2013 19:18 (twelve years ago)
In interviews, Stalking Cat stated that he chose to alter his physical appearance in accordance with an ancient Huron tradition, where Huron people alter their bodies to resemble their totem animals. Stalking Cat told of how he met a Native chief, who encouraged him to follow the ways of his totem animal. Stalking Cat also told of how his totem was actually a female tiger, and how he felt moved to blur the gender boundaries as well.[5]While living in San Diego, Stalking Cat met Tess Calhoun at a furry convention.

Nothing like an obscenely uncomfortable implant that texts you when you have a fever.

I mean, I have never actually had a problem figuring out when I've had a fever so I guess I'm not the target demo for this?
(also I've never wanted Frankenstein stitches in my forearm)

oh man, didn't see this thread before
That enigma dude either was living around town or knew someone in town a couple years ago. I'd run into him occasionally. I appreciate that he has an aesthetic and career that seems to work with his look.

he's most commonly spotted at guitar center
fwiw I think being known as someone who hangs around guitar center is probably more of a social stigma than subdermal implants

I feel like this could be an I Love Style thread because we're more talking about personal aesthetics than any sort of judgment of character, here
except that dude who looks like a cat, I don't think I could really relate on a personal level

Nah this is an I Love Clowning People Who Are Different thread, don't harsh the buzz

do you feel that casting a critical eye on the aesthetic choices of others is always wrong?

can't wait for imago's next WDYLL where he reveals he's put in extensive subdermal facial implants in order to look like a monchichi

The Prayer to St Jude
O most holy apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honoureth and invoketh thee universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, and of things almost despaired of.
Pray for me, who am so miserable. Make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to thee, to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of.
Come to mine assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity.
I promise thee, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour thee as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to thee.
Amen.

I would really like to talk to someone who's gone for a modification this extreme, I think it would be way more interesting than the 'Why I Have This Piercing' conversation
