So I left ILX Ten Years Ago. What have I missed

Message Bookmarked

There was a mixture of personal reasons, and strange chemical reactions, that meant that I, key founder of this Iconic message board, could not keep up with the vital lifeblood of the ILX mainstream. However, having recovered (out of my coma), what have I missed, and how can I catch up with what must still be the most vital online community on the webbernet.

on ILM, nobody talks about rockists, rockism, poptimism etc. much anymore. lotsa YouTube links. fewer long paragraphs are written.

on ILX, more stuff about getting older, childcare, grumpier vibe but maybe "older n wiser" too? maybe more gays and more parents than ten years ago?

There are less Britishers, more Americans now than 10 years ago. Perhaps as a result of this, on ILM dance music is discussed less and Guns'n'Roses more. Nabisco appears only rarely now, and few others bother to post several paragraph posts on pop culture anymore. There were some nasty insults and flame wars on the boards around 2004 or 2005 (I think?), which lead to compulsory registration, so no one could post bullshit anonymously anymore. Then things became more mellow for a while, until some of the nastiness returned in the form of "zinging", which some posters seemed to wear like a badge of honour; they even called themselves the "Zing Crew". Then the modding policies were tightened, and most of the hardcore "zingers" were either banned or left the board. Things have been more mellow again for a few years.

This happened a few years ago, don't remember this happening recently.

Mainly because someone else has to post it, and they tend to not bother with especially corny stuff.

I was banned exactly once. We used to have a system called "suggest ban", which was a supposedly democratic form of banning, where someone got automatically banned when at least 51 posters suggested him to be banned. I argued against this system, because 51 was hardly a majority, and because the bannee would never know whether there were legitimate reasons for getting banned, or whether it was just because 51 posters didn't like his posting style or something. Then I got banned myself due to 51 "suggest bans", seemingly because I was so vocally against this whole system, as well as being against the ILX secret board (that's another new thing we have), but I'll never know for sure. There was lot of arguing for for and against the whole suggest ban thing, several prominent posters were banned, and a couple of years later on "suggest ban" was replaced by "flag post"... Which seems much fairer to me, because now you have to click on a post you think is offensive/against ILX rules, instead of "suggest banning" a poster someone for reasons that no one else might ever find out.

One thing Pete would like about nu-ILX is that the software and the server are now far more stable than they were in The Greenspun Days of Yore. nu-ILX allows style sheets, so he could, if he desires, make ILX look exactly like it was when it first fired up. And he can access it from his smartphone using Zing. Also, board proliferation means he can now chill out on I Love Books, or indulge his inner wild boy on a noize board.

Aimless, Monday, 28 October 2013 16:57 (twelve years ago)

It's just like the Virgin Megastore (circa 1985) as compared to the shop that opened in Notting Hill.

Mark G, Monday, 28 October 2013 17:12 (twelve years ago)

Also, board proliferation means he can now chill out on I Love Books, or indulge his inner wild boy on a noize board.

There were actually more subboards 10 years ago, since back then anyone could start a new board. (IIRC "Ask a Drunk" and "Ask Dr. Freud" are remnants of this era.) Though because of that freedom, most of the subboards were pretty marginal or pointless, we have better boards nowadays.

And I'm being flip by not acknowledging the long, thoughtful posts you can find on all sorts of social and political issues from some really smart people with interesting perspectives. And the like 15 threads about cats. And two threads about bears.
