The season that again delivers classic after classic after classic, both episodes and quotables; but also the season that made James Hell Brooks say, "No more episodes like this." Another one where any one could get my vote, with frontrunners "Deep Space Homer," "Lisa vs. Malibu Stacey," "Bart Gets Famous," "The Last Temptation of Homer" (MICHELLE PFEIFFER 4 LYFE) and, uh, all of them.

Everything here is perfect, but for me, it's gotta be Cape Feare

"-ockman here at the Springfield County courthouse"

That was ad-libbed by Dan Castellaneta. He said that inhabiting Homer's character lowered his intelligence, hence the misspelling. The producers thought it hilarious, and left it in.

The last season where I look at the titles and have just nothing but warm feelings and memories of amazing moments, not to mention stuff I quote on virtually a weekly basis, e.g. "in another, more accurate way" as quoted above. Don't really know how to choose. Years ago I would have said "Cape Feare" in a heartbeat but I may have watched it one too many times. "$pringfield" is probably my front runner at the moment...hm.

Kent: Mr. Simpson, how do you respond to the charges that petty vandalism such as graffiti is down eighty percent, while heavy sack-beatings are up a shocking nine hundred percent?

Homer: Aw, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forfty percent of all people know that.

Kent: I see. Well, what do you say to the accusation that your group has been causing more crimes than it's been preventing?

Homer: [amused] Oh, Kent, I'd be lying if I said my men weren't committing crimes.

Kent: [pause] Well, touche'.

Confession time: I hated this season when it first aired. The humor seemed so different to my eleven-year old brain. The Ramones telling Mr. Burns to go to hell? Bumblebee Man yelling about the snowstorm in Kuala Lumpur and fainting? Homer calling the dean a "stupid head" is funny? It just seemed so off to the Simpsons I had known and loved for four years. I had thought they were finally running out of ideas and were going with mediocre material. Ha! Little did I know that the humor was different because the entire writing staff had been replaced at the start of the season. Of course looking back I realize what a narrow-minded dipshit I was, this season was brilliant!

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 11 November 2013 02:06 (twelve years ago)

I cannot fathom even processing this show as a child. It didnt come into being til I was 18 or 19.

"Arr! This chair be high, says I."

Treehouse IV is the first episode I definitely remember seeing when it initially aired. My parents for some reason let me watch Bram Stoker's Dracula when I was really young, like 7, so I was psyched. I loved that movie.

jmm, Monday, 11 November 2013 02:12 (twelve years ago)

Looking back, I think I had the great fortune of being the perfect age for the show when it was new. Was 15 by the time Season 5 began, which means I pretty much went through adolescence with the "classic" Simpsons; old enough to have seen/know enough to get most of the satire, but young enough that it was a kind of education in culture and humour.

the buildup to sideshow bob's appearance in 'cape feare' is awesome -- they stretch out the suspense for the entire first act, and then there's that great shot panning across springfield to bob's prison cell. still feels like the only episode where bob is genuinely menacing.

Homer Loves Flanders is great. Favorite bits:

extended sequence of Homer rocking out to "Two Tickets to Paradise"

Dr. Hibbert: "Cheers to Homer Simpson for all his recent charity work!"
Crowd: "Yay!"
Dr. Hibbert: "Jeers to this rusty tailgate!"

* post Homer walking through hedges weirdness *
Ned Flanders: "Sometimes to keep from hurting someone's feelings, you have to say things that aren't exactly --"
Rod Flanders: "Lies make baby Jesus cry."

Cheif Wiggum: "Yeah, where's your messiah now, Flanders? Myeah""

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 11 November 2013 05:02 (twelve years ago)

Cape Feare has another great time-filler-becomes-gag: Bart running back to the other end of the boat, looking over and seeing...the same crocodiles he saw a minute ago. "Oh yeah."

Highlight then and now is BARTWOULDYOULIKETOSEEMYNEWCHAINSAWANDHOCKEYMASK!?!?!? But "Hello, Mr. Thompson," the drive through the cactus patch, the houseboat neighbor gag... gold. Also always loved Wiggum and Marge on the "not technically illegal" angle.

Bart: Wow, my father an astronaut. I feel so full of...what's the
opposite of shame?
Marge: Pride?
Bart: No, not _that_ far from shame.
Homer: Less shame?
Bart: Yeah...

Tom: Uh, how'd you solve the door dilemma?

closed using this.
Man 1: Hey, what is that?
Man 2: It's an inanimate carbon rod!
Everyone: Yay!

A parade is organized in honor of the rod. It gets to ride in its own

angrily.

Bart: Aw, they were just about to show some close-ups of the rod!
Homer: Oh, stupid rod! I got gypped.
Marge: Oh, Homey, you should be proud! Only a handful of people have
done what you've done.
Lisa: Yeah, Dad! How many people have seen the icecaps and the deserts
all at once, or the majesty of the Northern Lights from one
hundred miles above?
Homer: Yeah, maybe I do have the right...what's that stuff?
-- Uh, stuff?,

The rakes thing might be the most experimental, abstract, and brilliant bit in the entire Simpsons show.

Man, I remember seeing that for the first time on a rerun and just being so thrilled by it, and then I never caught it again for years and years, and it always stayed in my mind as this almost-mythical scene that I wasn't quite sure had really happened. So great.

Interesting to see two I didn't like much up top: "Deep Space Homer" and "Homer Goes to College." Both have some *great* jokes though. I don't think I'm a big fan of TV show episodes that go far from the usual settings in general. Also, college humor might not work as well on a Norwegian? (I don't know anyone who's expressed love of _Animal House_, for instance. Then again, _Saved by the Bell_ seemed popular back in the day.)

But I'm totally with _Cape Feare_ and _$pringfield_. Didn't vote, but it would likely have gone to one of those.

"I think he's talking to you" is suuuuch an incredible punchline to that bit. Incredible timing.

funny thing about this season is all the problems that people say wrecked the show in it's post-S9 years really did seem to originate here. Homer being a giant asshole for no reason, a heavy reliance on meta-humor, increasingly wild and fantastical plots...and yet its still amazing front to back because the writing and voice acting is just that good

"The Boy Who Knew Too Much" deserved a vote.

Jasper: Why bother voting? He's guilty.
Flanders: Well, we might as well make it official.
Homer: What does "sequestered" mean?
Principal Skinner: If the jury is deadlocked, they're put up in a hotel together so they can't communicate with the outside world.
Homer: What does "deadlocked" mean?
Principal Skinner: It's when the jury can't agree on a verdict.
Homer: Uh huh. And "if"?
Principal Skinner: A conjunction meaning "in the event that" or "on condition that".
Homer: So if we don't all vote the same way, we'll be deadlocked and have to be sequestered in the Springfield Palace Hotel...
Patty: That's not going to happen, Homer.
Jasper: Let's vote. My liver is failing.
Homer: Where we'll get a free room, free food, free swimming pool, free HBO… ooh! Free Willy!
Principal Skinner: Justice is not a frivolous thing, Simpson. It has little if anything to do with a disobedient whale. Now let's vote!
Homer: Uh, how are the rest of you voting?
Everyone: Guilty.
Homer: OK, fine. How many S's in "innocent"?
Everyone: Aw.
Homer: I'm only doing what I think is right. I believe Freddy Quimby should walk out of here a free hotel.
