i'm mr meeseeks look at me!

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 05:19 (eleven years ago)

i watch each episode multiple times and they only get funnier each time. simulation ep funniest so far but meeseeks is hilarious

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 05:19 (eleven years ago)

this show is the best

Clay, Monday, 27 January 2014 05:43 (eleven years ago)

this show has made me re-identify entirely w/ my name

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 05:52 (eleven years ago)

this show is incredible.

tɹi.ʃɪp (Treeship), Monday, 27 January 2014 06:30 (eleven years ago)

the Mr Meeseeks episode is the first one I've seen that I thought was funny

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 27 January 2014 13:20 (eleven years ago)

u didn't like the simulation episode? i thought the jerry subplot was hysterical. "yep."

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

i hate community so i'm surprised i like this show. i wish it was somewhat less southparky/scatological/trollish but there's enough of interest to make it worthwhile

this harmless group of nerds and the women that love them (forksclovetofu), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:00 (eleven years ago)

The pilot left me cold and I haven't really been paying attention to it

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

friend showed me the mr meeseeks episode the other day. it was super funny but did u notice that the characters keep stuttering and going "uhhh"? whats up with that

flopson, Monday, 27 January 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

i think the pilot was the weakest ep so far (the m night shmalyalien one was the best) tho i was already really impressed by the art + humor from the beginning

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 17:02 (eleven years ago)

slow down. looking good. my man!

also every single glitch gag was hilarious

Mordy , Monday, 27 January 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)

Fucking love this show, but yeah, the pilot is easily the weakest episode. The voice actors hadn't really settled in, and their verbal tics were really annoying.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)

I also kind of can't deal with the slobber/vomit on Rick's chin

SHAUN (DJP), Monday, 27 January 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

I really hate the non-Rick and Morty characters, particularly the dad. Are there any episodes where the dad is not in it at all?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 18:24 (eleven years ago)

The dad is hilarious in the simulation episode.

Mordy , Tuesday, 4 February 2014 20:58 (eleven years ago)

Watching the pilot, Rick sounds an awful lot like he's based on Dan Harmon's verbal tics and heavy drinking

Roiland's original short from 2006 is here: http://vimeo.com/m/49664066

it's pretty bad imo, but the voices are almost all the way there.

Clay, Wednesday, 5 February 2014 07:46 (eleven years ago)

I should mention that video is totally nsfw at all and extremely juvenile

HA! of COURSE the guy behind House of Cosbys did this. "Roooooooooo-deeeeeeeeeee! Theeeeeeee-ooooooooooo!"

President Frankenstein (kingfish), Thursday, 13 February 2014 01:08 (eleven years ago)

oh man this show. that meeseeks bit, the way they kept throwing "i'm mr meeseeks! look at me!" in the middle of their speeches, basically anytime a meeseeks was on screen, slayed me. anyone know how any episodes there'll be? also why have so many american tv show taken a break these past two weeks?

my guess is that the first season will have 10. Moral Orel had 10 in the first season, as did Frankenhole (MO got an expanded second season, Frankenhole just got 10 more). Squidbillies only had 6, and Venture Bros had 13 in the first season.

Mordy , Friday, 14 February 2014 20:13 (eleven years ago)

ah ok thx jvc
mordy, are any of those shows anything like rick & morty? i'm in the mood for smth good. have watched a half ep of venture bros and not really into it tbh.

Jibe, Friday, 14 February 2014 20:15 (eleven years ago)

squidbillies is stupid, but moral orel is alltime classic imho. also try china, il, metalocalypse + frisky dingo (by the guy who does archer now) - none of them are like rick + morty but they're all off-beat stoner friendly cartoons that premiered on adult swim so in that way they're all exactly like rick + morty.

Mordy , Friday, 14 February 2014 20:21 (eleven years ago)

I really should give this another try, the pilot really didn't work for me but I keep hearing it's gotten better.

Venture Bros will always be the ultimate Adult Swim animated thing but the long breaks between seasons drive me nuts.

Simon H., Friday, 14 February 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

this probably sounds like an excuse, but venture bros takes patience. i basically hated it at first, but it builds on itself and just keeps getting better as it goes. easily one of the best things adult swim has aired.

CANONICAL artists, etc., etc. (contenderizer), Friday, 14 February 2014 21:06 (eleven years ago)

there's eleven episodes in season one btw, so five still to come.

Reddit AMA w/ Roiland and Harmon:

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Tuesday, 11 March 2014 20:06 (eleven years ago)

last episode was every bad thing about harmon's style rolled into one: vapid sentimentality, pointless improvisational teenage blathering heavy on the pop culture references, fourth wall breaking, DEEP MEANING without meaning ("i eat breakfast every morning twenty yards from my rotting corpse")... it's been a mostly good and occasionally very good show until here but man do i hope they hold off on this penny arcade ish in the future

Oh, I fucking loved this episode. Might be my third favorite, after Meeeseeeks and the alien simulator.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 20 March 2014 16:47 (eleven years ago)

lol i really liked this episode too - not sure i'd put it in my top 3 tho bc cronenberg ep was still better + this seemed more improv/pastiche which is great + hilarious but maybe not quite as masterful as some of the others?

Mordy , Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:19 (eleven years ago)

Is this the one with the sex robot? That one is the first I actually disliked. The Marmaduke writer appearing at the end seemed very "Family Guy" and too many of the jokes relied on tired "battle of the sexes" tropes.

Treeship, Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:23 (eleven years ago)

no, this is the one w/ the tv + alternate reality device. i thought the conclusion was even a little affecting. and the improv commercials + shows were hilarious

Mordy , Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:29 (eleven years ago)

yeah same here, found the ep v entertaining. dunno why but the whole fake doors thing, including r&m's bewilderement at whether it was an ad or a movie or reality tv, really got me.

Jibe, Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

I was hoping they'd stick with the spiderweb-pooping teddy bear a little longer.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 20 March 2014 17:45 (eleven years ago)

different strokes i guess? really really disliked this one; "family guy" comparisons felt painfully appropriate.

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:00 (eleven years ago)

to me it sounded like a bunch of stoners in a room telling each other jokes and then having them animated

Mordy , Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:05 (eleven years ago)

I liked it, but for those who don't, is it really fair to blame this on Harmon? I mean, the improvised "alien TV" thing is basically a half-hour version of the "alien news" gag from House of Cosbys...

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:09 (eleven years ago)

my few attempts at community made me fear this ep was what the whole series would be about but there's certainly blame to go around

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 20 March 2014 18:47 (eleven years ago)

aw rick is still watching ball fondlers when summer comes back.
is it me or in just about every other episode the dad has something happen that makes him feel good about himself, feel competent/relevant, only to crushingly return hto his more usual mediocrity. apple ad campaign being a major success in the alien's virtual reality, he's some kind of survival hero protecting his daughter and wife, this time he's a big celebrity on pluto etc.
also the opening & closing bits of butter robot wondeing about his purpose and summer & rick montage killed me.

Jibe, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 19:16 (eleven years ago)

the butter robot opening just slayed me. "what is my purpose?" "you pass the butter" "oh my goddddddd" "welcome to the team, pal."

so we're only three episodes in, but this show is kind of consistently good now somehow. They dropped the Family Guy style cultural dada and are focusing on two or three clever ideas per ep and then engaging in adventure time style world building / character development. Hope they stay the course.

let's not get too excited w/ the ouches (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 11 August 2015 07:52 (ten years ago)

Yeah first three eps have been great, and the first episode might be my favorite thing they've done so far. The show's way better when it sticks to crazy ideas instead of pop culture refs. Futurama's the same way. They also need to cut back on the sentimental moments, they always feel thrown in and unearned. That's one thing Futurama did way better.

Vinnie, Tuesday, 18 August 2015 12:27 (ten years ago)

Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 03:39 (ten years ago)

after my effusive praise upthread, shwifty felt like a comedown. its one of the weakest episodes of this or last season. I don't believe Rick would care too much about saving the world, morty's story didn't really add anything and the organised religion satire was route one of a kind that this show doesn't usually sink to. i wouldn't mind all this if the episode made me laugh but it missed that goal as well for me. it all felt a bit community s6. after 4 episodes of unadulterated joy they're due a coaster i suppose.

Didn't feel the last episode. I read the story "Microcosmic God" last year (also the inspiration of that Simpsons episode and that South Park episode). I think its ending hinted at recursively small worlds as well. It also has a creator who intentionally wiped out major portions of the micro population to have them evolve -- far darker than having them exercise to run a car battery. The show's B-plot was T2 kneecap shooting taken to a comedic extreme and I liked it.

I thought both TV eps were kind of weak but I did appreciate the alien How It's Made. nailed the voiceover style and the background music so perfectly

(in the 1st one I liked the extended fake doors ad, and the ~emotional twist~ was strangely affecting the first time, but it didn't stand up to a 2nd viewing. also I always appreciate a moment of Belly nostalgia obv)

Later episodes help establish their universe a lot better. Once I understood it, the pilot and every other episode became a lot more engaging.

Family Guy is unwatchable.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 11 April 2017 02:49 (eight years ago)

bojack is far more grounded and kind-hearted than rick and morty, tho rick and morty is more laugh out loud funny. Besides being two excellent animated shows, I don't really see many similarities between the two.

neva missa lost, wednesday nights on abc (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 03:33 (eight years ago)

Bojack is devastating. imo R&M is slightly lighter subject matter.

Any similarities were mentioned here: http://www.avclub.com/article/bojack-horseman-rick-and-morty-and-art-cynical-sin-223245

I sort of think if you don't dig the pilot at least a bit you won't dig the rest of it. I thought the pilot was great.

pilot's fine, but it's difficult to get a solid read on the show from one episode. i mean, you shouldn't be getting "family guy" out of it...

Rick Potion No. 9.

that was the episode where i realized this show was amazing. it's a p ridiculous episode but they slow things down at the end and it is nothing short of fantastic.

Mad Piratical (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 11 April 2017 13:58 (eight years ago)

Pilot charmed me by setting up the premise of the Doc/Marty relationship where Doc is a raging drunk who pulls Marty out of bed in the middle of the night for some insane adventure he's caught himself up in. Which alone is pretty funny and engaging enough to outweigh "moob" jokes or whatever that I don't even remember.

IDK, pilot episodes are tricky because it seems like anyone getting into a successful, well-loved show once it's established approaches them sneering, arms crossed, and all IMPRESS ME pretty much always.

FFS, "Back to the Future but drunk" doesn't exactly do justice to where this show goes, was just the initial hook for me in the first episode. But tbr that probably is enough of a premise to build a funny cartoon tv show, fuiud.

the commitment and long term engagement with campy pop-culture ideas puts R&M sometimes perilously close to Family Guy territory but they somehow manage to always save the day with a strong underlying intelligence and a genuine nihilism that rings true

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 14 August 2017 07:53 (eight years ago)

I'm finding the tone in s3 straying too much into meta and referential territory. I like the anarchic, offbeat, conceptual stuff (Meeseeks, house party, Poopybumhole, interdimensional TV), and I'm just not fussed about Mad Max and action movie parodies. Makes me feel like I'm watching a Futurama/Family Guy mash-up, which was something they were always good at avoiding.
We end up with long action sequences taking place in increasingly outlandish worldscapes, so far removed from the familial setting that gave the previous episodes that good push-pull against reality.
Rick is now such a genius he's basically a superman. I didn't find the pickle episode half as cool as it could have been - once he had worked out how to control the cockroach it just devolved into an action parody, whereas I felt that his journey as a pickle could have been smarter.
Cutting Jerry out the picture is also detrimental to the humour in this series. Is there a reason for this? like did the actor have to take time off?
I guess I'm just not finding this series all that funny which is the main complaint

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 14 August 2017 08:46 (eight years ago)

Got say I partly agree with DL here. I am still enjoying it, but finding no real lol moments so far this series.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 14 August 2017 11:52 (eight years ago)

Not sure if it's MORE meta/referential than before. S1 played with Inception, Nightmare on Elm Street, Fantastic Voyage, that Steven King rip etc. And pickle ep didn't ref anything outside of generic action movie tropes. Not being funny is the real kicker, though I want to watch some S1 to dlb-check that its R&M that's changed and not me.

barbarian radge (NotEnough), Monday, 14 August 2017 12:04 (eight years ago)

Okay I'll give you that. And it's nice that with the Mad Max one, they're not making explicit references to specific Mad Max scenes, just going for Mad Max-esque which is a good move. I was wondering if the pickle episode was referencing any specific film that I'd not seen before or not.

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 14 August 2017 12:38 (eight years ago)

xp - John Wick, obv. Whose nom de guerre refers to the Russian bogeyman a witch in a house on chicken legs, whereas Pickle Rick is named after the Russian bogeyman word for "pickle." And walks around in a "house" on rat legs.

oder doch?, Monday, 14 August 2017 15:03 (eight years ago)

My wife was appalled by the sequence of Pickle Rick murdering the rats. It was one of those moments that recalibrated what I was used to with what I was actually watching, kind of like when I step back and think about exactly how much gore is in your average episode of Superjail!

I enjoyed the episode and I really liked Mordy in the Vindicators episode but I think I'm gonna stay on my current "will watch if I happen to be up, otherwise will not seek out" plan.

Got say I partly agree with DL here. I am still enjoying it, but finding no real lol moments so far this series.

― Chewshabadoo, Monday, August 14, 2017 6:52 AM (four hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

This show has never really been about LOL moments, ever. I've never found it all that funny in the knee jerk punchline sense, it's more like watching an elaborate Rube Goldberg contraption executed tightly. It's in the form of a family guy type show but it's very different in its aims

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 14 August 2017 16:47 (eight years ago)

I disagree.. the first two series have provided me with A LOT of proper laughs in the last couple of years. I can see the comparisons with Family Guy and Futurama but it felt more in line, humour-wise with all those Adult Swim things from the 2000s like Aqua Teen and Sealab - just stream of conscious and unfussy-feeling

Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 14 August 2017 17:14 (eight years ago)

I feel like you have grossly misread this show if you're comparing it to ATHF and Sealab 2021.

||||||||, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:19 (eight years ago)

this show has brought plenty of LOLs in the first two seasons, but i'm also finding it a little light in that department in S3. enjoying the show and its storylines nonetheless.

circa1916, Monday, 14 August 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)

i dunno, i guess there were some funny jokes, but to me this show being a family guy/archer style show is kind of a misdirection. not that those jokes are always bad per se, but they're kind of not the point.

like, the EB White dome line wasn't really funny to me either... or its humor is more deeply related to the nature of the characters than it is the actual punchline itself? idk. the overall absurdity of the situation is where the humor emanates for me, a more generalized aura of this show is hilarious mixes with awe-inspiring at times, rather than it being some rapid collection of good jokes or punchlines

It almost feels like an even more extreme version of bojack horseman in this regard, in that that shoe is still tied to explicit JOKES in a way this feels less concerned with

Rick and Morty is funny as hell but it's not 30 Rock one-liner funny, and thank fucking Christ for that

Neanderthal, Monday, 14 August 2017 22:43 (eight years ago)

(no disrespect for 30 Rock, but it's more the outlandish situations and Rick's deadpan delivery that make for the hilarity on this show)

Neanderthal, Monday, 14 August 2017 22:44 (eight years ago)

xxp Maybe we're getting different things out of it but that's not what Archer strikes me as at all. Yes, the jokes come often, but the show is way, way more driven by character and plot (and even some serialization!). It strikes me more as an EXTREMELY heightened version of something like Arrested Development.

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:00 (eight years ago)

Yeah people who note (or criticize!) that about archer arent getting archer, I'm inclined to think.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:08 (eight years ago)

It's a workplace comedy that happens to be about an alcoholic secret agent, his mother and their colleagues. You could do it as a live-action single-camera and lose nothing!

Old Lynch's Sex Paragraph (Phil D.), Monday, 14 August 2017 23:34 (eight years ago)

And re the AD ref, it helps half that shows cast voice the actors in Archer!

Anyway! Off topic.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 00:38 (eight years ago)

I don't mean to conflate archer and family guy but I think both are way more joke driven than this show is, which is more "clever" than funny imo

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 00:46 (eight years ago)

idk. to me, the show is very quotable and heavy on the laughs. the fact that the jokes are not just jokes-for-jokes-sake (interdimensional TV aside) and are driven by character development make them land a lot harder

rock and roll tucci coo (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 01:59 (eight years ago)

I mean there's quotes I love to recite w/ friends but they are better in context of the show

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 02:01 (eight years ago)

...and he was.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:48 (eight years ago)

haha me too. I was p sure that's what it was but half-doubted they'd go all in.

another shit episode!

Neanderthal, Tuesday, 15 August 2017 03:54 (eight years ago)

We end up with long action sequences taking place in increasingly outlandish worldscapes, so far removed from the familial setting that gave the previous episodes that good push-pull against reality.

There was one of those in literally the first episode of the whole series though! And the one in the episode you're referring too was very deliberately and explicitly contrasted with a mundane family therapy session! I don't think the show has changed so much as you're suffering from diminishing returns. Personally I find it sharper, funnier and more imaginative than ever.

chap, Wednesday, 16 August 2017 15:11 (eight years ago)

yeah i get all that. I'm not sure, I just find the humour to be less madcap. Felt the very first ever episode worked fine as an intro to the characters but still feeling its way around. The universe of R&M really sets in a couple of episodes later. These just haven't tickled me as much as things like Meeseeks, Mr Poopybutthole or the House Party episode. Like, in those the madcap sci-fi action takes place around the family home. In these last ones it's more 'Oh shit is happening at home, so let's fuck off as far away from it as possible for no other reason than we can have an adventure loosely parodying a movie'. It's a matter of taste of course, but to me the manic, unpredictable nature of the humour has been replaced by manic, unpredictable plotlines and situations. The distinction is one of comedy and farce, to me, and while it's still an enjoyable show with some amusing moments, it's not making me laugh or raise my eyebrows in awe (and yeah it is an AWEsome show in many ways) like it once did

Shat Parp (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 August 2017 16:01 (eight years ago)

S02 def got better as I watched it more. Just the same, S03E01 & S03E02 felt especially packed with subtleties, and I need to watch them a few more times. It's too soon to assess.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewers head. There's also Rick's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they're not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick's existential catchphrase "Wubba Lubba Dub Dub," which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon's genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

I'm still pacing my way through season 2, which has been great. I love the show's dedication to alien landscapes that look largely like (or actually are) butts, and also its hilarious lack of effort in naming characters or other aliens. Saw that Harmon interview where he derides "The Purge" as "good enough" or something, and I thought, huh? I liked that one better than the Mad Max one, as far as riffs on movies go - or I like them equally - but more importantly, "The Purge" gave a satisfying payoff to seeing them in the exosuits every credit sequence. For that matter, the excellent rule of threes payoff when you hear a muffled "Feels Good" playing offscreen before they go on a rampage made me laugh my ass off.

In my experience and recollection, 18 year olds are on the whole pretty dumb, (even the ones with 'higher than average IQ'). They're not averse to making asses of themselves in public the name of some TV show they saw and showing off to their friends. They see this kind of thing as subversive and system-baiting, while the rest of the world looks on and says 'you dummies don't even get it'. I'm not defending this sort of thing, but it's more a reflection of people who are barely out of their teens getting turnt and getting out of control than anything to do with R&M.

I have had a visceral antipathy towards fandom of pretty much every stripe ever since buying a magazine about the history of Doctor Who when I was 12 and seeing pictures from a convention in the back; I loved the show, wanted to immerse myself in details about the stories and the production, even wanted to be the first American companion to appear on it, but I looked at the pictures of adults dressing up as the Doctor and his companions during a time period that wasn't Halloween and my overarching reaction was "this is not and never will be me".

When I first found out about Comic Con (San Diego's), it was 1993, I was in grad school in OC, and I was going "Huh, there was a comic convention all this time in the city I pretty much grew up in? Seems like I missed out." Nowadays I'm all "Yeah...glad I never went down that road."

emil.y, Tuesday, 10 October 2017 20:32 (eight years ago)

I went to a comic convention when I was a kid because I loved comics and it sounded like it would therefore be fun. Instead, it was a profoundly alienating experience as I realized I really had no interest in obsessively hunting down rare comics and collectibles. This convention was extremely small and tame compared to what they have now, which looks like the deepest pit of hell to me. Now you can chase down collectibles while muscling your way through a massive mob of cosplayers or wait endlessly in line to have some kind of geek hero worship experience. The kind of mentality you would need to endure and even enjoy this is exactly what it would take to drive hours to be the first in line for a sauce packet.

I mean, I'm sure there are smaller, less insane, and more fun conventions than the big name ones. And obviously many, many people enjoy these, which is fine. For me though, any comic convention of any size is going to be an alienating and unfun experience. I get that is mostly me, but I also believe that a strongly consumer-as-fan experience is inherently alienating.

I would like to meet the Hernandez bros some day though...

shackling the masses with plastic-wrapped snack picks (sic), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 07:49 (eight years ago)

I've been to Star Wars Celebration four times. One's experience of a con is what they make of it -- my first time I had no idea what to expect and came out kinda miserable. But you have to pick and choose. Want to sleep overnight in a line to be the first to see a trailer or a panel? Great! Go nuts! I did that ten years ago, don't want to do it anymore. Want to scramble to be the first to get an exclusive collectible? You can do that, or not. I did that with one (1) item I wanted at the last con, and I was in line for maybe 20 minutes. You can just walk around and look at some of the hard work that goes into costumes/cosplay, or hang and talk to other fans, or attend the smaller panels, whatever you want to do. At this most recent SWC, they had a room that was literally just showing episodes of "Star Wars: Rebels" all day and you could sit in there if you wanted.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 12 October 2017 14:44 (eight years ago)

McDonald’s Rick And Morty-inspired Schezuan sauce promotion ended without anybody seeming like they really got what they wanted out of it: McDonald’s came off like out-of-touch, withholding monsters for underestimating how badly people would be craving the promotional sauce. Rick And Morty looked bad by association. And none of the actual participants in the event—both the fans who lined up for blocks only to be denied their precious condiments, and the minimum-wage workers who had to field angry demands from people shouting “Wubba-lubba-dub-dub” in their faces for a solid Saturday—seemed to have much fun.

The day’s events do seem to have at least one winner, though: Michigan resident Rachel Marie, who apparently managed to trade a rare packet of the Szechuan sauce for an actual, working car. According to The Drive, Marie originally went on Facebook with her prize, looking to offload it in exchange for some collectible pins; instead, some sauce-loving maniac offered her a 2004 Volkswagen GTI. Faster than you can say, “Oh god, Rick would hate this,” she snatched up the trade, netting a new used car, while the car’s former owner got the warm satisfaction of knowing they’ve now become a new milestone in the fields of obsessive, potentially toxic fandom. (Meanwhile, McDonald’s has said it’s bringing the sauce back, some time soon, so all the food-goo profiteers out there had better be sure to prepare their garage or driveway for all the new wheels they’ll certainly soon be bringing home.)

My take is McDonalds wanted news footage of people stomping up and down demanding McDonalds products. Rick and Morty fans got played.

I feel the exact opposite, last episode aside I think it's way more consistent and tighter than any other season

Y'all crazy. Season 3 was good as hell, except for the relatively limp finale -- which tbf seemed to be teeing up a specific narrative arc for S4

there were some really, really lame and labored jokes in those first two seasons...even 'total rickall' which is one of my favorite episodes, just lazy shit like 'ooohhh i get it like the butler did it' that fills like time filler more than an actual punchline

And yes, s03e10 was a dip but I've enjoyed the stories this season a huge amount. Pickle Rick FTW.

Estella, Damm (stevie), Sunday, 15 October 2017 17:22 (eight years ago)

I really think this season was a noticeable step down. Still enjoyable creative, but I’m going full episodes without a single chuckle. I guess ppl here mostly think it’s better than ever, but yeah, definitely disagree.

circa1916, Sunday, 15 October 2017 19:46 (eight years ago)

Also I kinda hated Pickle Rick and how it seemed to be consciously designed to be a catch phrase/action figure/mascot or whatever. And the ~darkness~ this season seemed strangely forced.

circa1916, Sunday, 15 October 2017 19:49 (eight years ago)

didn't feel forced at all! if anything it succeeded despite seeming like exactly the kind of thing that *wouldn't* be a catch phrase

the show pretty explicitly criticizes rick. i know there's this media critique that even condemning some sorts of behavior valorizes + promotes them nonetheless just by portraying them (all those shows where you identify with tony soprano or malcolm's dad) but i don't know how the show could do more to demonstrate that they think rick's ideology is hollow and empty and leads to a life of misery?

just saw my first ep of this, the heist ep, that was some silly funny shit. i’m rather mystified by who the audience is tho, references are old and rapid. if i existed in 2014 when thred started i’d have like 6 years of viewing by which to suss it out.

in a mellow, balmy way (Hunt3r), Monday, 20 January 2020 05:04 (five years ago)

I don't get some of the references and I'm older than most of the viewing audience, so I imagine much of the audience doesn't either. The sheer volume of stuff - plot, dialogue, visuals, and gags - means it's still enjoyable even if you miss some things

That said, I am a little surprised the show is as popular as it is

Vinnie, Monday, 20 January 2020 07:47 (five years ago)

I think they threw in too many ephemeral goods (boglins, ecto-coolers, etc.) this season to avoid future mulan sauce incidents, where fanatics went after the single ephemeral good they mentioned.

sleight return (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 5 May 2020 17:18 (five years ago)

VC, beyond the thin veneer of one sentence character (Jerry is a narcissist fuck-up, Summer is the renegade teen who's as smart as she thinks she is), I read ALL the characters as vehicles for whatever pops into the creators' heads! Which is fine, I'm not watching this for dramatic insight, I'm watching it for the yuks. The issue for me is when they get into 'makes u think' social commentary with particular hamhandedness on topics that they not only don't care about but that don't concern them in the slightest. This was one of those.

the show has a habit of filling harmon's "fun stuff" segment with bland violence.

wasdnous (abanana), Wednesday, 3 June 2020 10:34 (five years ago)

Has anyone seen Solar Opposites? Because the one (shitty) episode I saw played like a b-story Rick & Morty with none of the stuff that makes R&M good. In case anyone is wondering about Roiland's contributions vs. Harmon. With Solar Opposites in mind, the gross violence in particular I presume is Roiland's contribution.

...

And indeed, back from a visit to Wikipedia:

At Channel 101, participants submit a short film in the format of a pilot, and a live audience decides which pilots continue as a series. Roiland, then a producer on reality programming, began submitting content to the festival a year after its launch, in 2004. His pilots typically consisted of shock value—"sick and twisted" elements that received a confused reaction from the audience.

Mordy, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:21 (five years ago)

It's def not highbrow enough for ILX.

I'm halfway through the season. The wikipedia says it eventually gets more serialized which is a bummer because I expected a lower stakes outlet for Roiland-style chaos ie House Of Cosbys. Instead it's sci-fi Bob's Burgers with weaker jokes. But otherwise the stories are bizarre and engaging and I'm enjoying it.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 3 June 2020 15:45 (five years ago)

I found Roiland voicing the lead to be massively distracting, since he plays a scientist who sounds like Rick, right down to the stammer. The first episode I thought had some good jokes in it, but also a lot of not good jokes. So ... totally average.

Still some great gags and ideas, but definitely feeling like more of chore this time. I think the unpleasantness of it all is starting to grind me down - kind of feel that now is not the right time for art this deeply cynical.

chap, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:17 (four years ago)

the episode names bear little relation to the contents, and aren't referenced outside the epg. if episode 4 is the cenobite episode then i think i agree.

the decoys episode seemed like a episode-length version of the snake civil-time-war sequence from the previous series and became hard to follow after 5 minutes. i did like the wooden puppets though.

I remembered this show existed yesterday and caught up to the point of the vat of acid episode which was pretty great tbh, structured kind of like a Stewart Lee shaggy dog story gag

Yeah the show's at its best when it's playing with structure.

> This was part of the joke surely?

i know, but it's a thin line between writing something clever that loses the viewer and writing something that's nonsense and loses the viewer and if the viewer's lost then how do they know which this is? (and does it matter?)

koogs, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 08:46 (four years ago)

haven’t watched this week’s, but i thought the first couple eps were top tier, the third was spotty with a few funny moments speckled within way too much wanton violence, and the fourth was just too much

the 4th one seemed… off? I’m not a huge R&M stan but I enjoy it and catch up every now and again. thematically v much in the wheelhouse, but the writing seemed particularly lazy and comic beats seemed forced or something idk. might have been the edible I took. anyway, I’m probably thinking about this way too much

I didn't like the one with Captain Planet, seemed so pat I was waiting for a twist. It's hard to care about characters they've worked so hard to make you dislike or not care about.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 18:15 (four years ago)

Exactly how I felt about ep 4, will. Most of the jokes fell flat and every element felt like something they'd done better before. I didn't find the most recent episode that funny either but at least it had something new

I did totally love the first episode with the time door and the king of the ocean, instant classic

This show is still really hit and miss these days, but having Peter Dinklage doing the voice of the Alien Hans Gruber was an inspired choice.

agreed on the hit and miss, that last "nightpeople" episode is the worst it's ever been but they've connected a few eps prior this year

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 28 September 2022 13:18 (three years ago)

the one i saw, probably the 1st episode, did feel like fan-service and nothing else.

i was hoping that the resolution to season 5 would've stemmed the fan service a bit. still gonna watch tho

comedy khadafi (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 28 September 2022 16:35 (three years ago)

to me, the plot-heavy episodes where a million things are happening (like ep 1) are so disappointing. so much writing and animation effort to make something overwhelming and unpleasant and usually not even that funny. I've liked all the other episodes so far, and the night people one was actually my favorite

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 00:31 (three years ago)

we're definitely looking for different things out of this show i think. at this point i'm happy for it to be a self referential nihilistic sci-fi romp that breaks the fourth wall while doing teraflop twilight zone bullshit.

“Cheeky cheeky!” she trills, nearly demolishing a roadside post (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 6 October 2022 02:40 (three years ago)

I mean, there's a good chance I'm in the minority on that opinion. My favorite eps have tended to be low on overarching plot, low on sentimentality and seriousness, high on sci-fi concept

Vinnie, Thursday, 6 October 2022 03:01 (three years ago)

The Fortune Cookie one was pretty funny.

I had only watched the first episode of this show before yesterday. My son had shown it to me when he was in middle school and I was thoroughly repulsed and never went back for more. For whatever reason, yesterday I decided to give it another chance and threw a few more episodes on. I'm still skeptical that I'll find much value in it, but my plan was to keep trying to engage. Then as soon as I flipped it off, I went to check the news and saw the news about his domestic violence.

Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:22 (two years ago)

I generally like the show and often find it to be funny and clever, but sometimes only fitfully. Afaict it def. has more than its share of gross meme-lord fans, though. As does/did South Park, too.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 13 January 2023 15:53 (two years ago)

I watched it for a while hoping it would move past the nihilism and edginess but despite a couple of teases it never followed through so I gave up after a couple of seasons

it's less overtly misogynistic than something like family guy but there is a pervasive sense of unexamined male geekdom to the whole thing which is offputting and while I wouldn't have guessed this it's not a massive surprise unfortunately

your original display name is still visible (Left), Friday, 13 January 2023 15:57 (two years ago)

south park is indefensible but can also be a lot funnier. neither is as clever as it thinks it is

it honestly did feel like it moved past a lot of the edgelord-ness in this sixth season (with some notable exceptions), and while it feels like harmon is responsible for most of what makes the show great, roiland doing all the voices will make it hard for me to watch this again

sault bae (voodoo chili), Friday, 13 January 2023 16:01 (two years ago)

it seems like a lot of these stories have been floating around for a while, just never attracted wider attention until now. that's often how it goes with these predatory celebs, it stays an open secret amongst those in the know and there's murmurings online but nothing happens until either a journalist hears about it and is able to put together a piece compiling the accusations managing to not be scared off by legal threats, or the celeb gets into trouble anyway which gives all the other stories much more attention

it's a tired cliche at this point for commentators to use phrases like "in a post-#metoo world" the implication being that everyone now takes this shit seriously and no one can get away with it for long because they'll face consequences and the accusers will be listened to and taken seriously etc etc - depending on the commentator this is either wishful thinking or paranoia about cancel culture - regardless you'd hope a minute's reflection about what things are actually like now would make them think twice about employing this cliche but I keep seeing it all the time

but not the extremely famous type of band someone would 'falsely accuse' for clout (which let's be frank, nobody really does this anyway, it's just a dog whistle).

fentanyl young (Neanderthal), Tuesday, 17 January 2023 15:22 (two years ago)

The odd thing is that I vaguely remember reading about this in 2020. But it must have been a false memory. After a bit of Googling I think I'm remembering this story from 2018 about Dan Harmon, one of the other minds behind Rick and Morty:
https://www.rollingstone.com/tv-movies/tv-movie-news/community-creator-dan-harmon-admits-sexually-harassing-ex-employee-198341/

He was subsequently fired from Community, although the official reason was that he was unreliable. But he was rehired, and is apparently working on a movie. The news about Justin Roiland makes the following story seem less charming than it would have been in 2021:
https://www.ladbible.com/entertainment/tv-and-film-rick-and-mortys-justin-roiland-got-drunk-while-recording-drunk-rick-20210427

"The recording was for season three episode Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender, in which Rick sets up a deadly Saw-like scenario for a team of superheroes after going on a bender. Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon explained that he encouraged Roiland to get drunk before the take.

And method act he did, knocking back several shots, despite associate producer Sydney Ryan asking Roiland not to have tequila. She explained: "The first thing I told him was don't have tequila, so of course, he had tequila... and liquor just adds a whole new aspect to Justin."

Harmon then admitted that things got 'a little creative'. The clip ... shows Roiland knocking back his fourth shot of tequila, before declaring his, quite clearly boozy, take sounds 'too sober'. Meanwhile Ryan insists: "No it doesn't - it sounds great. Later in the clip, Ryan can be heard urging Roiland to 'try and read this one on-script' as the voice-actor ad libs his lines, questions what happens to us after we die and swears at his colleagues."

Back when *Adventure Time* was a thing I remember saying to myself "please, dear God, don't let Pendleton Ward turn out to be a child molester, rapist, or sex predator". I admit it was because he had a fuzzy beard, and back that I was prejudiced against people with facial hair. The irony is that Justin Roiland, who has been consistently well-groomed - bearded, but well-groomed - is in fact the serial sex predator. Not Pendleton Ward.

Ashley Pomeroy, Wednesday, 18 January 2023 19:01 (two years ago)

And unfortunately Roiland also had a recurring role on that as the Earl of Lemongrab.

I've seen that behind-the-scenes clip of him getting drunk while recording a take, not saying it was a smoking gun or anything, but it did make me think he "Urghh, this guy's actually kind of a dick".

Although really there were plenty of clues before that, like the way he handled a dispute with the animators when they decided to unionise:

https://www.cartoonbrew.com/artist-rights/rick-and-morty-co-creator-justin-roiland-fuck-the-union-103723.html

Over the next two weeks, insiders say, advertisers panicked, lawyers huddled

many of his former colleagues say they haven’t heard from him in years, and when they have, it’s been unpleasant.

these guys that Justin hired were like, ‘Look, I drew a turd with eyes, let’s do a story about that.’ ”

‘Wouldn’t it be amazing if we could do this show in VR and never have to be near each other?’

at various points, his visitors included Kanye West, the comedians on Impractical Jokers and porn star Riley Reid, who gifted the room a succulent.

“It was something we just ignored because it was disgusting,” says an insider.

The behavior came to be expected, and though it was infuriating to collaborators, they say it was often excused by executives, chalked up to what one describes as “an eccentricity of a genius weirdo.”

His work, which has long made comedy hay of subjects like incest and sexual deviance, was now being viewed through a different lens.

“Now everything is going to have an asterisk on it.”

Can’t believe we’re going to have to put an asterisk on incest

Other show sources say he’d derail pitches and interrupt with sophomoric non sequiturs like, “What if his brains were on the outside?”

you can't interrupt with sophomoric non sequiturs in here gentlemen this is the rick and morty writer's room

Ha yeah when I read that I thought "how is that not like any random episode already ffs"

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Wednesday, 8 February 2023 02:24 (two years ago)

seriously, like the episode where Rick gets drunk and passes out in his own diarrhea (shit, was it even only one episode?)

Wow sounds like a great show

It actually has something going for it in the first couple seasons!

I don't think there was a bad season.

The example I gave was to illustrate how silly it was at times which is why objecting to his sophomoric ideas was silly (as opposed to some of the much more heinous shit he's been accused of)

I don’t know, Pickle Rick was very much a nadir for me

castanuts (DJP), Wednesday, 8 February 2023 13:12 (two years ago)

It had an overall great concept but was already getting into dimishing returns territory, putting aside the puerile shit like the abovementioned. There's only so much you can do with "ha ha we can just make up anything cos we broke the rules of physics" before it just starts getting confusing and repetitive.

there's infinite shit you can do if you have a bit of imagination but maybe you need to be less attached to your shitty characters and their unfunny dynamics

yea the first few episodes I watched of this show got me pretty excited but once you see a bad episode you kinda lose all enthusiasm for it. definitely some funny bits but there's very much a "dude staring at you while he plays his favorite Family Guy clips" vibe to it

when I discovered Xavier: Renegade Angel one of my first thoughts (outside of "what the fuck?") was "this is what Rick and Morty was trying to do"...feel like you can't just commit halfway to this sort of thing
