"Am I thin? Like, for a dog?"

Simon H., Thursday, 6 February 2014 05:17 (eleven years ago)

Told myself that I can't watch tonight's ep until I write the cover letter (and update my resume) for a job I'm applying for.

Haven't even opened Word yet.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 6 February 2014 05:48 (eleven years ago)

Tonight's was the funniest episode yet, from Hannibal talking to the dogs to Rachel Dratch counting gum balls on the floor to Abbi's roommate's boyfriend awkwardly kissing her. This show is so perfect.

Murgatroid, Thursday, 6 February 2014 08:01 (eleven years ago)

this is a good year for weirdo comedies, enjoying this show way more than I expected

Clay, Thursday, 6 February 2014 08:09 (eleven years ago)

This last one WAS really funny but they lean on hacky jokes from time to time, like the running "noooo!" gag.

Hannibal Buress is killing it pretty damn consistently, though.

Simon H., Thursday, 6 February 2014 13:59 (eleven years ago)

Thought ep 2 ("Pussy weed") was better than this one. Crushing on liana big time.

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 February 2014 20:16 (eleven years ago)

I've been debating bringing it up here, but I get a lot of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia from this. These totally idiotic narcissistic protagonists who are completely confident in their twisted world view while generally frustrating the rest of the world. Differences being of course that these are brooklyn hipster girls and not drunk philly heshers/faux-yuppies. Also, in Sunny, while the supporting characters do include a bunch of bizarre characters, many episodes focus on them coming up against "normal" people, while so far this show has more of a Louis grotesques vibe, like the shipping company lady.

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 February 2014 20:20 (eleven years ago)

this show is the best

da croupier, Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:05 (eleven years ago)

Last ep was ok. All the running around seemed a little filler-ish.

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:35 (eleven years ago)

Except that running around NYC is what the show usually does…??? Not including that last episode when they were stuck inside Abbi's apartment, of course.

Herbie Handcock (Murgatroid), Saturday, 15 March 2014 20:47 (eleven years ago)

Is that the wedding one? There was a hilarious lazy b-roll montage in that, which was like a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" t-shirts CUT TO a shot of a bunch of "I Love NY" coffee mugs CUT TO a shot of some other "I Love NY" t-shirts. LOL. Like, oh, this takes place in NYC?

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:01 (eleven years ago)

Sry last ep sucked

calstars, Saturday, 15 March 2014 21:14 (eleven years ago)

I meant multiple jokeless scenes/shots of them literally running around. That was different.

How dare you tarnish the reputation of Turturro's yodel (Shakey Mo Collier), Saturday, 15 March 2014 22:05 (eleven years ago)

If you visit New York for like 20 minutes you'd realize that a montage of cheap NY souvenirs represents "a place a real New Yorker rarely ventures" and was thus meant to imply that the women were running around in a place that wasn't their comfort zone

perfect puppy (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 16 March 2014 02:48 (eleven years ago)

i think they do a pretty good job of capturing "actual new york"; i lolled at dude being unwilling to go with her to peen station (sic) because it was "gross" but i think that really woulda been more accurately applied to port authority

We hugged with no names exchanged (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 16 March 2014 03:30 (eleven years ago)

Hurricane episode was hilarious. Wedding episode was absolutely terrible. Just the pits. I mean, the gay guy doing drugs and incest jokes weren't funny the first time, but they ran them into the ground so hard I wonder if it was intentional, and even then they still weren't funny. I also wonder if they wrote these two even more cartoonish and obnoxious than our characters characters to make some sort of point, which also wasn't funny.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

Oh well, they can't all be winners.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 18 March 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

There's a video going around of the intro of tonight's episode, where the two apparently do a thing dressed up as Nicki Minaj and "The Rain"-era Missy to "Started From The Bottom" and I'd really like a link to said video that works in Canada. Goddammit.

This show isn't about what they do for a living. I mean... I don't think of Laurel and Hardy as a story about piano movers.

Abbi's artistic aspirations are pretty quickly exposed as delusional. her art is m/l objectively awful iirc. it's just another joke they're playing with.

Clay, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:21 (eleven years ago)

actually abbi has been selling her art since before the show was airing, no knowing wink going on there

da croupier, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:28 (eleven years ago)

well all art is objectively awful imo so maybe i am not the best judge

Clay, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:29 (eleven years ago)

i totally get not wanting to watch another show about directionless twentysomethings in nyc (whether or not their in the "culture industry" is a pretty pedantic quibble), but anyone old enough to be tired of that trope is also old enough to know that when a show increases in popularity over a season, it's foolish to judge its worth off the pilot

da croupier, Friday, 27 June 2014 23:31 (eleven years ago)

that said my bar for "tv worth buying the episode" would be crazy high, not sure any show would pass

Yes Virginia even Brooklyn 99

da croupier, Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

personally thought that show got a lot better over the season, Samberg and Peretti's characters got a lot less shrill

not saying one has some moral obligation to stick with a show after hating an episode, just that if a show becomes more acclaimed with time, it's pretty possible the pilot is nowhere near the best ep

da croupier, Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:54 (eleven years ago)

Did the show get funny at some point too?

am0n alb4rn (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 28 June 2014 15:57 (eleven years ago)

did you come to the broad city thread to start a conversation about how you hate brooklyn 9-9 or did my claim that pilots of good shows are often gestational works make you think about how much you hated that brooklyn 9-9 episode you saw

Look at this joke I've recognised, do you recognise it as well? (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

Broad City is a very good show but I don't think it really demands onion A/V club "well the first episode is a C but THEN the season gets totally B+" convos.

am0n alb4rn (Whiney G. Weingarten), Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:04 (eleven years ago)

But Stapp later came into the Harbor Court Hotel bar while Sexton and bandmates SA Martinez and P-Nut were watching Broad City on television. He stepped in front of the screen and said, "311, I am ready to fight about Brooklyn 9-9," according to Sexton.

da croupier, Saturday, 28 June 2014 16:05 (eleven years ago)

The key to success across the cable board seems to have been the belated American adoption of 8-13 episode runs. Not too many that it's impossible to catch up. Few enough that you can be familiar with every ep. Not stretched too thin to sustain itself. Thank you, UK, for showing us the way.

one month passes...

So, I avoided this until last night at which point I watched the first seven episodes back to back.

I really disliked Ilana at first because, well, her personality is kind of unbearable. She she does have some amazing lines though and seemed to get less annoying as the shows went on. I can't remember which ep it was but there was this one where they all woke up from sex dreams and she was dreaming that Abi wanted to masturbate with her and she said something like "I've been trying to get you to parallel play forever, dude!" and I just died.

Anyway, yes, this is good. I'm a huge Hannibal fan so his presence doesn't hurt.

Workaholics has a lot of funny stuff on it, and the comparison to Broad City is apt in some ways. The latter is probably a better show overall.

JRN, Thursday, 15 January 2015 00:39 (ten years ago)

Broad City is DEFINITELY a better show. Workaholics was ok until the last season, which was garbage, but once better shows started coming on CC (BC, Review, Kroll Show, etc etc) I stopped watching Workaholics.

Only episodes of The League I've seen are the two centered on Jason Mantzoukas' character, which seem like a better concept for a show than the one the show is centered around.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 15 January 2015 00:53 (ten years ago)

I was about to ask if that is the dude who plays Raffi, but of course it is

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 15 January 2015 03:23 (ten years ago)

We like the League fine, but wow, is it pretty much the laziest comedy on TV. Basically, barely there plot setups, horrible LA as Chicago, mostly them insulting each other, and when in doubt, Raffi. Who, to be fair, is a) a perfect OTT character and b) probably could not support his own show, thank goodness, which would quickly become a more extreme version of Workaholics. Which I liked for a few seasons and then, poof, no more interest My wife couldn't take Review, but I want to give it more time. Kroll Show, I started it but didn't get into it, but I hear it gets better. Broad City is ace, Amy Schumer hit or miss with glorious hits, Key & Peele still mostly great, Nathan For You short but sweet. Golden Age of Comedy Central stuff.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 15 January 2015 03:54 (ten years ago)

Amy Schumer is horribly racist fuck her forever. Review is incredible. But BC is best

Living in a particularly US state (and not traveling to any others all year) has honestly made me forget that this is a thing that people have to think about. Like "why don't you just go to the weed store?".

Anyway I heard vague things about this show last spring, don't have cable, recently got a Roku after having a baby and noticed this was on Amazon during one of my late night baby-feeding / TV watching stints. I totally love it, much more than any other show I've discovered lately mostly due to the dirtbagginess of Abby and Ilana that reminds me of people I know much more than any other "young single people living in New York" TV characters that I find really unrelatable.

I watched 3 seasons of Key & Peele and think it's generally pretty great but a bit inconsistent so who knows.

The League isn't a great show that I'd rep for, but it's def better than one would expect at times. It was my favorite sitcom to hate that I'd never seen for a while. The Raff guyi and Kroll carry the show for the most part.

I want to watch the first season all over again. I keep thinking about it and laughing. I was just thinking about when Ilana was stealing the lotion from the gym in a bag and blurted out, "It's khiels!". That would have been me. At my old job, the tampon machines were always unlocked and stocked with tampax pretty much daily. I used to go to different floors with my reusable grocery bags and stock up. I didn't buy my own for the entire 3+ years that I worked there.

hug niceman (psychgawsple), Thursday, 15 January 2015 18:39 (ten years ago)

fantasy sports are great, it's like the combination of statistics nerdos and rpg nerdos. the league is like a show about people who play dungeons and dragons with occasional guest star spots from the actual dragons and dwarves and elves

valleys of your mind (mh), Thursday, 15 January 2015 18:44 (ten years ago)

I watched a couple episodes of Kroll Show and while it had its moments it was really just too aggressively ugly for me to enjoy, also lots of shooting fish in a barrel sorta stuff with the TV show parodies

Mordy, Thursday, 15 January 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)

The fantasy football aspect of The League is almost arbitrary. You could replace the sports fandom with music or film geekery and it wouldn't change the show really at all. It's too bad since that's the #1 reason people won't watch it.

Darin, Thursday, 15 January 2015 19:03 (ten years ago)

The fantasy football thing also kind of makes you think it's going to be along the lines of, say, Arli$$. Arli$$ meets Entourage.

©Oz Quiz© (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 15 January 2015 19:58 (ten years ago)

fyi last night's episode is up on cc.com and doesn't require a tv provider (at least in the us).

wmlynch, Thursday, 15 January 2015 20:54 (ten years ago)

The fantasy sports aspect of the League is as inconsequential as its LA-as-Chicago setting, or the fact that some characters have kids, somewhere, sometimes. It's mostly the people ripping on each other, and given the level of the comedians usually pays off at least a few times per episode.

Watched and liked this first new BC. It captures being young and in New York so well that my wife and I were basically, like, fuck New York, even if we were young that place sucks, how does anyone live there?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

But yeah, Review was so fucked up and dark that my wife basically gonged it outright and told me to watch it on my own time.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 15:55 (ten years ago)

i think i mentioned this but i watched all of review in one night and by the end i was just so so sad

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 15:58 (ten years ago)

Forrest MacNeil is not a real person guys

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:58 (ten years ago)

but I saw him on TV?

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:06 (ten years ago)

anyway did everyone see the Broad City/Sleater-Kinney panel interview thin

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:14 (ten years ago)

apparently Review's second season barely got picked up, and only after a significant budget decrease, so, uh, tell yr friends to watch it when it comes back

Simon H., Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:43 (ten years ago)

Forrest MacNeil is not a real person guys

i'm not sure what this means? are you saying that ppl shouldn't have emotional reactions to works of fiction?

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 17:58 (ten years ago)

I just can't really fathom taking it seriously, it's such a farce...? Unless you were really sad because you thought it was terrible and a waste of your time or something.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:28 (ten years ago)

i guess even as a farce i was able to empathize on some level w/ macneil completely destroying his life and everything that made him happy, and the suffering he felt when it happened. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mordy, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:36 (ten years ago)

That is totally the magic of Andy Daly. It doesn't matter how fucking stupid and ridiculous and evil any character he plays is -- when he injects a little bit of sadness into the character I always buy it. see also the guy from Eastbound & Down. no matter how much ridiculousness they buried that character in he was still as balievable as any of the characters they /tried/ to make empathetic.

i don't want to say underrated bc i feel everyone probably has the same opinion on andy daly, but yeah. a legit top 5 living comedic actor.

Francis Björk Morgan (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:51 (ten years ago)

I agree Daly's great, love him in E&D etc. But yeah I don't feel emotionally invested in Forrest MacNeil, esp because all of his problems stem from his largely unacknowledged pathology (ie the need to be on TV)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 20:24 (ten years ago)

kinda want some pancakes now though

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 20:24 (ten years ago)

wait. I've never seen review, but I thought that was Kurt Braunohler. Weird.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 20:54 (ten years ago)

i think i have to watch that show again b/c i sort of disagree but i can't articulate why. but also fuck it, this is the broad city thread.

xp haha i was thinking of mentioning kurt braunohler and how I still occasionally confuse him & andy daly!

shit's obviously artisanal (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 21:05 (ten years ago)

esp because all of his problems stem from his largely unacknowledged pathology (ie the need to be on TV)

That and an obsession with the weird rules he set out for himself that he feels the need to follow absolutely.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:17 (ten years ago)

that's part of what makes me sad! i think it's a dramatization of the way humans destroy their lives by following weird rules that they make up for themselves, and only realize too late that it was never worth it

Mordy, Thursday, 22 January 2015 03:19 (ten years ago)

yeah so many people go for the easy "let's make this guy a sharklike mindless psychopath and let the humour come from there" angle when an angle like that is so much more a) funnier and b) true and c) tragic

Ouch, the second episode of season 2 is pretty early for a crap episode. Too much Bevers, Ilana kinda annoying. Abbi and trainer guy were fine I guess, but my wife and I didn't catch any laughs. And if we did laugh, we don't remember doing so, which is a different problem. Oh well. These two are pretty funny, they'll bounce back, and they get points for not having Bevers walk in on Abbi when she was dancing naked.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 23 January 2015 04:02 (ten years ago)

most lol bits were both Bevers pratfalls (collapsing on the treadmill and the credits bit about keeping him awakw) tbh

flopson, Monday, 26 January 2015 21:52 (ten years ago)

Hurricane episode one of the few - only? - where their insufferable friends (Hannibal aside) hold their own. Bevers is so stupid. Unless he's supposed to be a walking parody of fart joke, in which case ... he's still stupid. The relationship between Ilana and Abbi is the heart of the show, and the farther they veer from that focus, the less satisfying it is. Last season's wedding episode being some sort of early nadir.

Have we met Abbi's roommate yet? I assume that is supposed to be a big reveal at some point. Lena Dunham?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 26 January 2015 22:16 (ten years ago)

yeah she's hot

i love ilana's roommate though

flopson, Monday, 26 January 2015 22:20 (ten years ago)

Bevers seems more like "let's have Gemberling on this show" than "this character is a delightful counterpoint/contrast to our tale of friendship". Haven't watched any of this season yet though.

The Understated Twee Hotel On A Mountain (silby), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 01:43 (ten years ago)

i totally get not wanting to watch another show about directionless twentysomethings in nyc (whether or not their in the "culture industry" is a pretty pedantic quibble), but anyone old enough to be tired of that trope is also old enough to know that when a show increases in popularity over a season, it's foolish to judge its worth off the pilot

The key to success across the cable board seems to have been the belated American adoption of 8-13 episode runs. Not too many that it's impossible to catch up. Few enough that you can be familiar with every ep. Not stretched too thin to sustain itself. Thank you, UK, for showing us the way.

I dunno. (amateurist), Thursday, 5 February 2015 23:28 (ten years ago)

I don't think hating characters is an obstacle to enjoying a show. The only close to consistently likable character on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is Charlie, still love that show.

pelvic slang (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Friday, 6 February 2015 00:34 (ten years ago)

haha yeah Charlie is v lovable

agree the girls would be p irritating in real life, but so would most people on TV

Οὖτις, Friday, 6 February 2015 00:35 (ten years ago)

oh, i didn't mean to imply a negative assessment of the show, which i like. i think one of the most interesting things about the show is how they play versions of themselves, but notably not particularly witty or mature versions. the wit of the show is mostly ironic, that is, at the characters' expense, as in when ilana (sp?) riffs on "rape culture" in increasingly bizarre ways.

i think if the show took a few steps in the direction of melodrama, i'd abandon it. that it seems pretty focused on yuks is its saving grace.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 6 February 2015 01:06 (ten years ago)

actually i guess they do allow ilana (alana?) flashes of genuine wit, but they usually undercut that with something else.

I dunno. (amateurist), Friday, 6 February 2015 01:06 (ten years ago)

yeah they've said that the show is about them making fun of their younger selves

flopson, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:25 (ten years ago)

i personally like the characters a lot. people on ilx always dislike characters of tv shows or movies lol. but it's obviously true that they're not very mature, especially ilana.

flopson, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:36 (ten years ago)

I think the show is very smart dumb, which hits the sweet spot (like Workaholics did early on).

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 01:42 (ten years ago)

rewatched Workaholics recently w/ my gf who's never seen it. warned her that it gets spotty after season one, but after we were done we sort've agreed that outside of a stray episode here or there it really didn't outright suck until season 4.

casual male (will), Friday, 6 February 2015 03:34 (ten years ago)

BC is awes. only bum ep was maybe the one where they're trying to get to the wedding? idk

casual male (will), Friday, 6 February 2015 03:35 (ten years ago)

But that one had a great line where they were riding hubway bikes and the gay friend stole one and was like, "OMG I thought we were all stealing bikes now!". I realize that one great line does not make an episode but that did kill me.

Watched the new one last night. SO so so good. Sussie Essman is the greatest and holy shit was she ever perfect as I's mom. There couldn't have been a better choice for that role.

I really hated Ilana's character at first but she's grown on me even and I find Abby endearing. Guys, I really love this show.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 6 February 2015 13:12 (ten years ago)

Great episode. This is how you do it, bring in guests but never forget that the story is about Abbi and Ilana.

I like that this takes place in the not quite real world, which makes their obnoxious behavior more tolerable. They're funny, because everyone else is insane, too. Even Lincoln, the closest this comes to a straight man, is a nut. Again, part of how this perfectly captures NYC c. now: you have to be crazy.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 February 2015 14:47 (ten years ago)

"now"?

What a genius ep. I always had this pet theory that cell phones killed New York, because there are always dozens of things going on any given night, anyway, but suddenly people had the means to look for something better as soon as they got where they were going. Like, "great party, what else is going on?" This ep pushed that to the perfect FOMO extreme. Funny, well-acted, Lincoln (loved the cab exit) and gym guy and no Bevers.

Loved this ep, too. Great use of secondary characters that did not distract from the central pair of stars, especially given dog wedding had every potential to be as obnoxious as wedding episode last season. Cracked up at the endless rainbow flag from the bag and also Abbi kicking the ball back with a rollerblade on and predictably but hilariously taking a spill. Also, heartened by the lack of a blurred nudity gag.

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:22 (ten years ago)

Haven't seen the new one yet, but the last few have been good. Still, it's a pretty erratic show, which always surprises me. They have so much time and so few eps, there really is not excuse for stinkers. Same goes for Key & Peele and a bunch of other stuff. The highs are so high and the lows so low that they have to be aware they've stunk the joint up, so why not just try something else?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:26 (ten years ago)

i think because the first season was a considerable hit and they wanted to strike while the iron's hot. there was a new yorker profile for fuck's sake. They did a lot of touring and celebrity opps in the space following the season, it's understandable they have some sophomore jinx moments. I think they likely have six good episodes per year in them and that's quite a lot!

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)

Not when you only make 10 episodes!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:30 (ten years ago)

They should probably make eight but they really don't have the clout to make that call.

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:31 (ten years ago)

Nathan For You did. He specifically limited his seasons to 8 episodes because he wanted to keep the quality solid.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)

i think nathan had a lot more experience with production than abby and ilana; didn't he do a lot of work on canadian television?
and nathan 4 u (which i will say is as good or better than BC) doesn't really have the cultural heft that Broad City has right now.

Maybe in 100 years someone will say damn Dawn was dope. (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:38 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I guess I'm just not buying it. Broad City, Key & Peele (who just got their own NYorker profile!), and Amy Schumer Show - all buzzed, all shockingly uneven. I suppose it is because they stay so busy between seasons, but most of their bad eps are not unfixable disasters. They're more like weak SNL eps where they just kind of sit there. But of course, SNL hobbles itself by being "live." These filmed sketch shows don't have that excuse. They shouldn't feel as seat of pants as they are, unless there's just so much improv and ideas being thrown out it's just a challenge to collect it into anything coherent.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

if broad city didn't feel seat of the pants it wouldn't be half as fun. also it's not a sketch show.

resulting post (rogermexico.), Thursday, 5 March 2015 15:53 (ten years ago)

Feels like a sketch show to me, I guess. It's like one long sketch per episode. Because as much as I usually like this show, "plot" is not a word that comes up that often.

i like both broad city + amy schumer but sometimes i feel like ppl expect a lot more from television shows than i do. like if a show buzzes comfortably from the television while i check ilx that's already half of the way there. a few funny jokes and it's a fave. nb this is also why i've seen almost every ep of comedy bang bang.

Sitcoms usually have a few plots going on, though. BC is like Seinfeld if they were all the Chinese restaurant episode. It works as well as the characters can be funny, but it's not always awesome to be stuck in a room (or hole, or porthole) with them. Like I said, I think so for the FOMO episode might have been the peak, because it actually has an arc and (literally and figuratively) goes places that lets us know more about the characters. Lotsa this stuff, though, is two very funny comedians treading water.

Next week on BC: they sit in a hot tub.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 March 2015 17:21 (ten years ago)

true, v unfair to friends and seinfeld

haha

You gotta take a show on its own terms. It’s unfair to compare BC to (say) Girls (which I realize I may have done on the Girls thread)-- unfair to both BC and Girls. Beyond the apparent similarities, they’re different genres. Girls (like even Friends) are more long form novelistic, following the characters’ life trajectories and transformations. BC (more like Seinfeld) isn’t really about that. Things do happen and change in the lives of the characters (Abby finally sleeps with her crush, George gets engaged, Jerry and Elaine sleep together), but ultimately those events evanesce and the show at its core remains the same: these characters with these (more or less) permanent relationships among them are thrown into a variety of situations. It’s episodic, short stories (involving the same characters, more or less unchanged) as opposed to chapters of a novel.

but sometimes i feel like ppl expect a lot more from television shows than i do

yeah, like i feel i was a little too hard on Togetherness on the Girls thread. Why kick a pretty good little show (especially if/ when it’s down). Didn’t like it as much as I wanted to like it; but maybe what i’ve got to do is adjust my expectations of what it is.

OMG I had a kid named Andrew in my group once who reminded me of that kid. He looked exactly like a miniature Jon Lovitz. It was uncanny. He didn't even really look like a kid version of Lovitz, just a shrunken one. Andrew was like a brilliant 40 year old in a 4 year old's body. He called his dad Tony and was a pizza delivery boy (no cars on the island do he used a wagon) by the time he was around 7. I wish I could remember that kid's last name because I would kill to find out what he's up to now.

x-post - hahaha, y. Not to further derail but one of my favorite moments happened when he showed up at camp super early one day when I was setting up snack. I hugged him and said, "Andrew, you're so early!" This four year old looked at his dad all exasperated and said, "Tony, Tony, Tony. I told you not to wake me up so early, did I not?". I'm sure that I've written about that here on on FB before but it was the best. A kid like that has the potential to be so obnoxious but somehow he wasn't at least when he was that little.

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Friday, 6 March 2015 13:50 (ten years ago)

I went to a bar mitzvah once where, taking a break from the volume, out in the hotel lobby, I bumped into this precocious kid from the party, also taking a break. He was really oddly mature and well-traveled, but he mostly kept talking about the video game arcades in various international airports. I increasingly found it odd, until my aunt, later, told me that he had a certain type of autism/condition that made it very difficult to interact with his peers but easy to talk with adults. So he essentially was this little adult in a kid's body, with a kid's interests but unable to easily hang with kids. Tragic/fascinating.

See, this episode is a great example of what I find so perplexing. Finally they devise a plot with tons of hilarious potential, but they seem almost unable to do anything with it, or at least no way to make it more than fleetingly amusing. Maybe one or two chuckles here, but the best stuff was probably guy's montage of anatomically improbable sex with pool toys at the end. The rest ... very slowly telegraphed setups. Wow, she broke the mirror and ended up teaching old people, didn't see those coming. Huh, the rich kid comes to the rescue (youngun equivalent of cursing granny gag in lame movies). Go figure, the bag she sold for a few bucks was marked up to a couple of hundred dollars. LOL New York. Thankfully the leads remain charming and inherently funny physical comedians even at the show's most uneven, and it works well as a satire of the city, but c'mon, Broad City - it's only 20 minutes! Keep it together! Find the jokes!

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 13:12 (ten years ago)

i just got on this train a couple weeks ago, just caught up last night. i think the second season is even better than the first! glad they're finally starting to flesh out some of the characters. they're starting to actually give the sorta-boyfriend guy (can't even remember his name despite him being in nearly episode - that's how dull he's been so far) some sort of defining features, which is a step in the right direction.

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 10 March 2015 13:33 (ten years ago)

this was a rly nice finale. feel like they've been trying to get that right tonal balance for a while where they can fold in a more gauzy kinda self-aware meta reflective vibe (girls-ish is too strong and obv a super cliche at this point, but) and this is the first time it's come off without seeming leaden and dumb-smart rather than smart-dumb (meaning dumb like lulz caperz) (workaholics is smart-dumb btw u lames)

obv it's a corrective part 2 to last season's closer but i'd include all of s01e8 to s02e1 (gah fucking rogan plzzz never again) where yeah idk it seemed to abruptly and nonplussingly shift to a this-is-about-friendship-cos-look-we-are-really-doing-naturalistic-conversation-tho-also-nyc-and-being-young-huh effort

<3 this show anyway, u know it's a sitcom winner cos they are totally ur friends in ur head. plus lincoln and jaime are too cute

LA Review Of Books thing was interesting. Could quibble with some aspects where race and class are blurred - could easily imagine an african-american character from a middle class upbringing thinking they should be training rather than cleaning toilets at the gym - but it succeeds in underscoring how people could watch the show and feel left out of the party

I think these last two eps were the show at its best. The Ripa episode was on par with the pegging and FOMO, imo, for laughs and structure, while the finale was very much a classic the-things-that-make-NYC-terrible-are-the-things-that-make-it-great episode. Like, the final episode was basically:

jaymc, Saturday, 21 March 2015 02:56 (ten years ago)

I'm so in love with this show and these two it's ridiculous. The fuck you finger response to the guy telling them to smile! Pretty much everything about this last episode and especially the blanket/pizza/bonding sesh at the end. SO GOOD.

St. Mark's lol. When I'd go into the city during HS we used to hang out there because we thought it was cool and then in college I spent a whole lot of time at Coney Island High (RIP) I haven't been in probably a decade but it was still neat to see.

I don't want to read at article because I don't want to read anything bad about this show. I know that is ridiculous and weird but I haven't identified with and/or liked anything on tv, particularly anything by/about women, as much as this in I don't even know how long.

Best comedy on tv.

And I feel like not only was the Val episode a turning point for the series -- Broad City's Marge vs. the Monorail -- but also that it might be see in the future as some kind of mid-2010s tv benchmark thingy.

Haven't seen the latest ep, but I've seen everything else, and especially enjoyed the eps this season, buuuuuuuut ... I'm starting to get, like, Pauly Shore annoying vibes from the characters, especially Ilana. Might need to tone it down a bit with a dose of the real world, since Surreal World NYC can get a little exhausting. IMO.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 March 2016 14:22 (nine years ago)

I actually felt that way about last night's episode...which was great. But at some point I remember turning to my wife and asking if Ilana was always that cartoony. I mean, yeah, she's a character, but it just felt like last night she was a parody of her already totally ridiculous self.

regardless, it was totally hilarious and awesome as always.

flopson, Friday, 18 March 2016 19:04 (nine years ago)

apparently not. I find it weird that anyone would express surprise that a bunch of young women in the public eye would gravitate towards Hillary instead of Bernie.

Οὖτις, Friday, 18 March 2016 19:07 (nine years ago)

also just like, it doesn't mean they don't like Bernie they prob think he's cool too. they're just also excited about there being a female president of the USA. and rightly so. and i mean, come on, politically she's as moderate as Obama, who millenials love, so this is as much about vibes than politics. the implied exhortation that everyone must be excited about 80 year old socialist to the complete exclusion of any other candidate is just ridiculous

flopson, Friday, 18 March 2016 19:16 (nine years ago)

also if indeed there was grumbling about HRC's cameo, it shows how much some people care about those two fictional characters, it's great for Abbi and Ilana as creators. I would be flattered.

trickle-down ergonomics (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 7 April 2016 15:59 (nine years ago)

it was a funny episode. this season has been fine. i think they are probably right that they need to move the show forward somehow but i'm not sure if suddenly trying to develop the characters is the best direction. maybe they'll do something cool with it.

the clips for the new ilana/paul downs show looked a little 'wacky'.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:17 (nine years ago)

I'm fine w this season altho I do agree generally that "character development" is not a direction they need to go in

Οὖτις, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:17 (nine years ago)

All silly modern comedy shows do this though, don't they? It always feels weird.

Evan, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:20 (nine years ago)

yellow despackling power (Will M.), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:20 (nine years ago)

i think this season has been pretty bad, with last night's episode and maybe the first episode being the highlights, the Clinton episode being the nadir, and episodes like the one they went to abbi's dad's house, or the food co-op episode just being totally blah.

caught a re-run the other night of the episode where there's the big storm and abbi needs to hide a shit that won't flush etc. and it was just waaaaay better than anything from this season

trickle-down ergonomics (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:21 (nine years ago)

ryan, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:25 (nine years ago)

Always Sunny does "character development" pretty well and until now, so has Broad City: introduce crazy magic realist quirk then make it in-joke continuity... they shoulda called back to Val by now imo instead of relationship issues

ulysses, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:32 (nine years ago)

I'm sympathetic to concerns over worrisome emphasis on character development. Just look at how annoyingly repetitious I am over on the Adventure Time thread over the years.

Evan, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:35 (nine years ago)

Always Sunny does "character development" pretty well

hadn't occurred to me but very otm! They strike this great balance between the characters' changing/expanding and yet they all always stay more or less exactly the same. their individual arcs don't change the nature or structure of the show, somehow.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

they shoulda called back to Val by now imo instead of relationship issues

I thought Val could've been a turning point for the show; instead, they're doubling-down on the Wacky Weed Hijinks (which I still find funny/entertaining, but there's so much more they could be doing, as Val showed us).

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:45 (nine years ago)

the notion of this show aiming to be more like always sunny in philadelphia is a bizarre turn for this thread to take even by ilx standards

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:50 (nine years ago)

Just within the context of handling character development or arcs. Still, why do you say that?

Evan, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:52 (nine years ago)

xp. haha otm.

the move into seriousness and actual drama last night was a bit weird tho. i even felt empathy for trey.

trickle-down ergonomics (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:52 (nine years ago)

imagine the dealer from high maintenance made a cameo on this show

yellow despackling power (Will M.), Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:56 (nine years ago)

both are "endearingly odd people behaving badly" shows and i guess i'm making the comparison because after one great season and one good season, we've got three good episodes and several WHAT THE HOOK GON BE attempts at determining new directions. Always Sunny has somehow maintained more or less the same high level of quality for 11 seasons; you could do worse than follow their example.

As an aside, I think the main reason that Sunny has done so well for so long is that (with the notable exception of Charlie Day), the principal actor/director/writers focus almost entirely on making the show and aren't constantly on Lip Synch Battle or doing speaking tours or spin off shows or trying to write a book. I think the trap of "25 years to write your first album, six months to write your second" totally applies to television auteurs and people can be turned into cultural avatars and bled dry trying to capitalize on fame and opportunity instead of just doing the goddamn teevee show.

ulysses, Thursday, 7 April 2016 17:56 (nine years ago)

both are "endearingly odd people behaving badly" shows

but they're not really very similar at all. like in sunny the characters are p much sociopaths and the humour is p much geared quite often towards transgressiveness and them being awful to each other. whereas broad city their bad behavior is like social miscues and maybe being a bit obnoxious

trickle-down ergonomics (jim in glasgow), Thursday, 7 April 2016 18:01 (nine years ago)

ilana's behavior is regularly sociopathic! abby just told a guy she's been fucking for awhile and who just took her out on a romantic date that she needs a moment to process her heavy emotions and then (after he saves the life of her best friend's mother) abandons him to run after her girlfriend and say that he's a joke and meaningless! they are both self-absorbed assholes! Just lovably so.

Broad City is the innie to Sunny's outie. BC is aggressively friendly and self-debasing; Sunny is mean spirited and self defeating. both still fuck up other people's meals and jobs and romances and best intentions.

ulysses, Thursday, 7 April 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

I like that they're going for character development, and that they make lots of callbacks and continuity references (Lincoln had his shoe "murse" with him when he broke up with Ilana, Abbi's blue dress, Eliot recognizing Trey as Kirk Steele). Genuinely felt bad for Trey. The last thing I want this show to do is go bongo like Always Sunny. Also this episode was four minutes longer than usual.

aah, my recording cut off the ending and now I know why.

I know I can go in and adjust the settings to extend the recording a few minutes but for some reason I never do and inevitably end up shouting at the television instead. I've missed the very end of about half of this season's episodes.

This is still the funniest show - Stevie d. otm- that bb dude was really funny.

I really don't care for the relationship stuff though, bc the best thing about this show is that nothing centers around guys and romance.

just1n3, Sunday, 10 April 2016 08:27 (nine years ago)

Trey really isn't someone I'd feel much sympathy towards anyway. Seems to have been pretty unfeeling himself earlier in the series, or was that the series before, with him somehow supposedly humanised in this one?

Stevolende, Sunday, 10 April 2016 12:12 (nine years ago)

last week's episode was amazing. when jaimé starts crying "it's just sometimes...i feel like he broke up with me too"

Just saw 1st part of TTB. Is it same writers as well as Illana and Tre. Or is that who wrote it?

Stevolende, Saturday, 23 April 2016 13:40 (nine years ago)

yeah they wrote it along with the director of many BC episodes. kinda felt like they wrote a generic stoner comedy version of Hot Tub Time Machine but couldn't get it made as a movie with a budget and a big name co-star so they threw it together for Comedy Central. a few really funny scenes but kinda felt like uh okay what was the point of even doing that.

flappy bird, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 16:01 (nine years ago)

K&P is good but it's a different beast - very much in traditional vein of sketch comedy with clear antecedents (Chappelle, MAD TV etc.) Broad City is harder to pin down.

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 26 April 2016 16:03 (nine years ago)

agree w you about UKS/bad drugs analogy. Schumer is awful, Dunham isn't really about comedy (and that show goes for loooooong stretches with zero laffs)

there are like a zillion TV shows w weed humor and hard partying protagonists

this is not what makes BC so good. besides, i dont think they're particularly hard partiers. for one thing, i just love Abbi and Ilana. I don't think I've felt such an affinity for characters on a tv show since The Simpsons. it's contemporary like Girls, but funny, and relentlessly funny. we have to pause like three or four times per episode to get over laughing fits. i got a sore throat from laughing so hard when Ilana's brother made the flappy bird joke in the hillary episode. we're re-watching episodes now, and there are so many jokes that we missed the first time around. like when Ilana hires all the interns in her "white power suit," she leans over to her co-worker, mug in hand, "I'm trying to do the whole Zen Buddha thing now...tea." also, the casting is incredible. Garol, the accountant, the intern from Hoboken... the show is such an amazing fusion of so many things, it's without peer. i'll check out Silicon Valley and Veep ASAP. also heard about this show called You're the Worst? anyone watch that?

flappy bird, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 18:03 (nine years ago)

this is not what makes BC so good.

^^^

Really its a female buddy comedy, and the relationship of the core duo is what makes it work. This is not really a thing many TV shows (any?) are based around.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 27 April 2016 18:04 (nine years ago)

afaik, there has never been a female buddy comedy that didn't revolve around men/relationships with men. that's why BC is so great - men are such a non-issue and neither of them care about finding husbands or whatever, they just wanna get laid. the world needs more shows like this for young girls/women.

I felt it was sorta like the Jenny Slate thing where it was a person who generally is funny but who hasn't fully figured out how standup sets work.

But the other thing that bothered me was all the gender/sexuality stuff, where she's pledging solidarity (ok, great!) but then also weirdly undermining that solidarity at the same time. And I don't mean that she's a hetero woman that's married to a hetero man. For example, she talks about discussing gender identity with one of her lesbian friends and talking about what they "feel" like ("70% female/30% male") and my reaction was - waitaminit, what is this weird gender normative division she's enthusiastically blathering about? What part of her psyche is she identifying as "male" (apparently the horny, aggressive side)? Isn't characterizing those things as male (and all the other stuff - being domestic, cutesy, etc. as female) part of the whole problem? Isn't the ideal goal to disassociate behaviors we all engage in, to varying degrees, from gender, and just see them as stuff people do (or don't do), regardless of gender identity?

Οὖτις, Monday, 6 January 2020 22:03 (five years ago)

how muted the laughs are despite the fact that the audience is positively willing for the show to be good and to give the benefit of the doubt is quite jarring. very strong cult of personality vibes

Forgive the thread spam, but I wanted to note that this show's 2019 season is nominated in the 2019 ILX TV poll:

ILX's Best Television of 2019 Poll / VOTING AND CAMPAIGNING THREAD / Voting Ends January 31

If you like this show and you'd like to see it have a good showing in the poll (running in February) all you need to do is submit a ballot including it and your other favorites (4 minimum, 25 maximum, organized by your favorite to least favorite) to forksclovetofu at gmail by end of day today. It'll take five minutes; get to it!

lmao - I came to this thread because Ilana is touring through my neck of the woods and wanted to see if anyone knows what her show consists of, if it's any good, etc. Then I scrolled ever so slightly upthread and saw a unanimous consensus that her standup special is horrible. Anyone have a different opinion? New show more worth seeing? Something other than straight standup? I haven't watched the special and no plan to based on the above commentary but it doesn't surprise me tbh that her whole thing might leave a very different impression without Abby to balance, they have a very precise and possibly delicate dynamic
