Dead Finks Don't Vote — ILM Artist Poll #55 — BRIAN ENO

OK, let's poll the work to date of Brian Peter George St John Le Baptiste de la Salle Eno (1948-), composer/theorist/writer/singer/anti-musician/visual artist.

Three Parts:

1. Rank your top 30 Eno tracks. What's eligible is work under Eno's name as solo artist or co-artist (Eno/Byrne, Eno/Cale, etc) and artists that include Eno as a member of a group (Roxy, Scratch Orchestra, Passengers, etc).

normal scoring: 1:40, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12, 21:11, 22:10, 23:9, 24:8, 25:7, 26:6, 27:5, 28:4, 29:3, 30:2.

2. Productions. Rank your top FIFTEEN albums that are listed as produced or co-produced by Brian Eno. Note that this section is for albums, not tracks.

3. Work as other than lead artist. Rank your top FIFTEEN tracks that Eno is credited as being involved with that aren't under his name as Artist. Stuff like Bowie's Berlin Trilogy, Talking Heads' 2nd-4th albums, U2 albums that he plays or sings on. This section can also be for Eno remixes of tracks by other artists. Don't forget Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy! (Note: I haven't heard Lady June's Linguistic Leprosy yet.)

Send your ballots to me at wmcrump AT gmail.com, or via ILXmail. Deadline is midnight Eastern Daylight Time on Sunday, July 6th, 2014.

I recently, uh, happened across a 13.6 GB archive of everything in that list from 1971-2009 plus a lot of stuff he's appeared on. There's no way I'll be able to do more than scratch the surface of it, but I'll scratch as much surface as I can in the next 2 weeks.

WilliamC, Friday, 20 June 2014 16:55 (eleven years ago)

I really need to listen to Tracks & Traces

polyamanita (sleeve), Friday, 20 June 2014 17:09 (eleven years ago)

btw "The Belldog" is all time amazing

I guess "Big Day" and the studio "Miss Shapiro" go to the side poll, huh?

polyamanita (sleeve), Friday, 20 June 2014 17:10 (eleven years ago)

Yeah.

I should add that I have huge gaps in my knowledge of Eno's work, so if I get anything totally wrong, don't hesitate to let me know. I'm in this more to learn about his work than I am to put my thumbprint on the results.

thanks for setting this up! i'm excited about the third section (Work as other than lead artist), but also a bit hesitant. i understand the concept, but it's tough to know where to draw the line. for example, talking heads' second album More Songs... which he produced. other than a few glaring enoisms (like the "spooky reverse reverbs on the vox in 'warning sign') it's much more of a talking heads kind of thing, especially compared to something like remain in light where his influence is obvious. but would all songs on More Songs... be eligible, because technically he's associated with it? i guess it's up to each voter to decide if his footprint is tangible enough on the track in question?

on the same note, is there a more authoritative source than wikipedia's list of albums/songs produced by Eno?

at any rate, should be really interesting results!

Karl Malone, Friday, 20 June 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

I think this will have to be the case. Although with In Conflict, we could conceivably get a little insider info?

someday world is also boring. I feel like collaboration doesn't really do much for Eno's output these days, so I'm not sure why he does it. the last few solo ambient things (small craft and Lux) are great.

Yeah, voting for specific tracks on Lux and Music for Airports is going to be tricky. Lux, in particular, has been a go to sleepy time album for the past year for me, but I'm not sure that one track stands out above the others for me..

Karl Malone, Friday, 20 June 2014 20:55 (eleven years ago)

1/1 is the standout on Music For Airports imo, timeless

Worried the first part is too broad. Almost think solo Eno should have his own category, and then a category of collaborations/co-credits/bands (like Roxy, Passengers, etc.).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 June 2014 12:58 (eleven years ago)

Some Eno trivia in the meantime!

1) That lovely track "Under" first appeared on the "Cool World" soundtrack.

2) This unlikely remix of EMF came as payment for Eno borrowing the song's drum loop for use in "Ali Click:"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lfa7Y0oEkl0

3) Last, Eno's one and only appearance on Sub Pop (and another lovely song to boot):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pr5EHyGBsgg

He plays synths and sings. It sounds like something off of "Another Green World." There's an Eno mix on some Walkabouts comp.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 June 2014 13:23 (eleven years ago)

I don't know if "By This River" is considered an obscure deep cut or a total classic, but I heard this first in an Italian movie. Will be in my top 3 if I vote in this poll:

in terms of voting on Eno Roxy tracks, should the criteria be "songs Eno obviously had a big hand in"? so "Bogus Man" yes but like "2HB" making the list seems wrong

col, Saturday, 21 June 2014 16:27 (eleven years ago)

By This River also pops up in Y Tu Mama Tambien. From the Guardian review:

All the time, the death theme continues underneath. After quite a bit of weed, Luisa tells her two companions about her first sexual experience; then she tells them the boy died, at the age of 17. Their age. Later on, Luisa, her face clouded with obscure melancholy, tries to teach a little girl to float in the sea "like a real dead body". And what is it that Julio wants to listen to on the car radio? Not rock'n'roll, not Latino music, not dance music. What he wants is Brian Eno's desperately sad By This River: "You and I/ Underneath the sky that's ever falling down, down, down/ Ever falling down." This happens to be the song played at the end of Nanni Moretti's anguished tale of family bereavement, The Son's Room.

And he produced and sang on this uber-MOR cover:

Weirdly I think Eno's legacy as a producer at least is not his weird stuff but his mushy DX7 mode.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 21 June 2014 17:37 (eleven years ago)

yeah... eno's strength when he's strong is as a maker of beautiful objects, weird or no; think it's telling how often his name pops up in What is the most beautiful song ever?, and there are a couple dozen more obvious candidates not mentioned in that thread, maybe more esp when you factor in cluster fripp hassell cale &c

Wii u mario me? (wins), Saturday, 21 June 2014 20:39 (eleven years ago)

Monday morning bump.

I've been conscientiously listening to hours of new (to me) work but not really finding anything to displace my current favorites, though I'll give Cluster & Eno and More Music for Films more time.

WilliamC, Monday, 23 June 2014 13:36 (eleven years ago)

love the various Cluster & Eno records, not a big fan of Films 2.

polyamanita (sleeve), Monday, 23 June 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

Sort of what I was alluding to before, Eno's had so many long-term collaborations or collaborators - Fripp, Cluster, Cale, Byrne, most of his erstwhile Roxy mates, Bowie - that it makes it hard to whittle down. I like to think of Eno as Eno, solo Eno, and all his bands and other projects/productions as other things.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 23 June 2014 15:50 (eleven years ago)

Over the weekend I've been checking out some of the ambient albums. Current favorite: 'An Index of Metals' from Evening Star.

Has anyone read On Some Faraway Beach: The Life and Times of Brian Eno?

Yes. Pretty good. Moves through the 90s and aughts a bit too quickly IIRC.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 10:42 (eleven years ago)

I'll say it again, but "Sometimes" by James is one of the most beautiful things he's had a hand in. I could listen to that song forever. Iirc, he had his doubts about producing the band until he heard that song on the demo. "Laid" (the album) is so great. I like the other james/Eno records a lot, too, including "Wah Wah."

It's a shame the title track was the band's (US) breakthrough, because it relegated this album to cut-out bin shame, and the band to novelty status, especially since the song and album share a title. But the rest of the disc is so moody and weird yet largely subdued and acoustic. Yet pretty much lovely through and through.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 27 June 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

good album, and thanks to the breakthrough it was a dollar bin standby for years (that's where I got it). "Out to Get You" is a terrific opener. I don't really know where to find Eno's hand in the album though.

Euler, Friday, 27 June 2014 19:47 (eleven years ago)

Vocals and synths, most overtly. But I suspect he had a huge hand in the arrangements. See: that James in the studio with Eno clip I posted.

Got both during my last Eno obsession – have never given either a really close listen but both seem nice if inessential.

Agreed – the three extra tracks on the reissue are among the best things he ever did with Harmonia or Cluster. Imagine at least one will make it onto my ballot.

Eno gave Wobble a bunch of unreleased music, and Wobble constructed the album. Eno had nothing else to do with it.

I will try to do this but, to maintain my own sanity, restrict it only to recordings with Eno's name on them. Even then it's next to impossible.

The most successfully ambient of Eno’s ambient albums is the 2012 release “Lux.”

...“The process of making the skeleton of it was generative, in the sense that I set in motion various processes and let them do their thing,” Eno told me. “But what was different this time was I thought, O.K., I’m going to listen to that, and I’m going to find out where the sort of moments are that something unusual happens, something you didn’t expect happens, and I’m going to work on them—so from a generative beginning I then went into composer mode, basically, which I haven’t ever done before. In the past, I’ve really let the thing just carry on, do its thing.”

The result is both remarkable and almost impossible to remember. I’ve listened to “Lux” as often as any of Eno’s work, but I don’t think I could reproduce five sequential seconds, even by humming. I just know it.

nice to see the props for Lux in the NYer piece. it was generally well received when it came out, but i think it deserves recognition as perhaps his very best non-vocal album, up there with discreet music.

it's definitely my favorite released album of his since Shutov Assembly (though I have to say over the last ten years I started going through phases with Lightness)

my favorite thing by him in a long time though is his iOS app Scape. it's just complex enough, just familiar / recognizable enough, and it's just different enough with each listening. it's interesting how my initial resistance with this kind of listening faded away -- the kind of stance where if I invest the time in listening to something, I want to not just listen, but to learn it, even if it's a record of improvised music. but of course a lot of that is a side-effect of experiencing most of our music in recorded form and it's interesting to get used to just listening to something for its own sake. Lux does have a bit more structure to dig into than the apps, but it uses so much of the same processes & sonic vocabulary as his recent apps that I'm actually running into resistance listening to it as a CD, it's the same thing every time

Shleep is not an Eno production, but the title track is I believe a formally credited co-write (as is Heroes and Once in a Lifetime!)

Are any or all of you James haters UK-ers? Because that might explain it. In the US they never amounted to anything save that fluke single, but I imagine they were pretty huge over there.

Anyway, James-haters, I give you an excellent detour: Tim Booth with Angelo Badalamenti, Bernard Butler and our man Eno, playing synths and singing around 2:28.

beware misinformation on the net (surely no!?) , e.g. Wikipedia lists The White Arcades as Produced By Brian Eno, when the LP says Produced By Harold Budd (Eno's on 2 tracks including a co-write). and when Eno only produced one track (e.g. track one of Shleep) he may be listed as one of the producers of an album which could also cause confusion.

speaking of Wyatt, Eno's also on a couple tracks on Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard.

emil.y, Thursday, 3 July 2014 11:00 (eleven years ago)

Eno does some vocal treatments on "Lamb." Amazed he's only a guest on one solo Peter record. Any fans of Byrne's "Catherine Wheel?" He's all over that.

polyamanita (sleeve), Thursday, 3 July 2014 13:56 (eleven years ago)

Emil.y, part of my fretting and indecision here is because I more or less have the month of July off from work and have been trying to decide when and where to roadtrip. I could hit the road almost immediately but that would push the poll finish back a couple of weeks. I think the better bet is to wrap up the poll, finish the rollout and hit the road midmonth without having to think about ILX or real life. I could still hold the deadline through Monday if that might draw in a couple more ballots or expansion of ballots to include side polls.

Also, yes! to The Catherine Wheel.

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 3 July 2014 15:30 (eleven years ago)

Per Milton's post, I've been listening to Scape the last few days...my 6 year-old loves to play with it, and I pick it up now and again. I think a new add for it is the Oblique Strategies-esque aphorisms and suggestions at the beginning ("Try using a single element").

I also bought Lux on iTunes simply so I could see whether it should appear on my ballot (it's nice but probably won't).

I still can't help but wonder what it would be like if Eno applied all the processing and control techniques he's learned in the last 20 years to analog instruments. He wrote some commentary for Benge's Twenty Systems, so I guess you never know.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 3 July 2014 16:52 (eleven years ago)

it would be neat to see what he would do confined to the role of arranger in an orchestral or chamber ensemble context. Like "here is the piano score, here are the instrumental we have hired, please turn the one into the other".

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:32 (eleven years ago)

Well, he does sort of "conduct," often (again, see that above James video), but not in the conventional sense.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:34 (eleven years ago)

yeah i mean he could have a pro orchestrator there to actually write on the staves, that part wouldn't matter

OutdoorF on Golf (Jon Lewis), Thursday, 3 July 2014 18:54 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I was just thinking he wouldn't be able to hear the melodies from a look at the score. No doubt, he's brilliant at arranging and coming up with bits of filigree and countermelody that are as earwormy as the main melodies. I have his quartet of 70s song albums on my iPod, and nothing makes the hours on the gym treadmill go by faster than listening to those four records and examining the songs in an "exploded view" way.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Thursday, 3 July 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

The absolute coolest thing he did on those first albums, though mostly the first two, is assemble two different bands - that is two sets of drummers, bassists, guitarists, etc. - then have each group take a stab at his abstract or outline. Then he would later combine the best bits from both, like the bass from the first take or the guitar from the second. In the case of a song like "Here Come the Warm Jets," I imagine that accounts for the chaos of the overlapping drums, for example. Then someone like Fripp, he would more or less just drop him in and give him loose instruction, usually just with one take. (That's what Visconti did on "Scary Monsters," too.) Anyway, the probably explains why some songs zig when you expect them to zag, or why the parts "work" even if they are at odds with one another. It's also a very concrete early manifestation of his application of generative music, happy accidents that stumble and shape their way into songs.

for Eno-involvement tracks I meant (but forgot) to go through Byrne's soundtrack/score to The Catherine Wheel. "The Red House" always stood out to me because when played at parties, etc its sonic intensity cut through making you feel hyperaware, partly due to the tremendous drumming of Yogi Horton (RIP). it's also one of the closest sounding tracks to ..Bush Of Ghosts.

lots of other good stuff on The Catherine Wheel - the cassette had the full score: 23 tracks to the LP's 11. how's this for a great title: "Dense Beasts"? I guess that means they're all close together, or they're all really thick!

Paul, Saturday, 5 July 2014 04:07 (eleven years ago)

I'm struggling with including instrumental pieces in the face of vocal tracks. How do you vote for "1/1" when "Burning Airlines" is in the mix? This is going to be hard.

Naive Teen Idol, Saturday, 5 July 2014 04:35 (eleven years ago)

I agree - I found this especially difficult with On Land, which I love but think of as a whole, except for one particular standout. same with the side-long tracks like Discreet Music title track - I'd probably rather have a half an album than one song, but I think the fave tracks should be ones that resonate strongest with you, usually easier with vocal tracks (songs). you can always fix it in the mix by repping fave instrumental albums high in the Productions rankings.

I also found a few sleeper tracks that were suspected faves and even though they didn't make the list (no regrets!) will be future faves.

Towards A New Novel (and it sucks and whatever) (wins), Sunday, 6 July 2014 14:54 (eleven years ago)

I don't think I can do this properly -- too many moods to conjure, and too difficult overall considering the range of sounds we're talking about here. I'm just gonna vote up personal favorites and wait for y'all to tell me about the rest to digest at my leisure in the manner of my choosing.

La Lechera, Sunday, 6 July 2014 14:56 (eleven years ago)

I'm working on my list right now. I'm mainly a fan of his four 70s vocal albums but I have a few of the instrumental albums which I really like. I'm finding it hard to pick out highlights from those as they work as whole albums too well. Not sure if I'm going to have time for the productions poll.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 6 July 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)

yeah I'm prob just gonna throw together a list of fairly obvious stuff with eno singing on it and "an ending (ascent)" from the classic album pure cinema chillout

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Sunday, 6 July 2014 17:42 (eleven years ago)

Really not sure if I can get this done by tonight, and I'm busy all tomorrow. Will try to rush it this evening but otherwise I'd need until Tuesday night, which might be an extension too far. Mostly need to go over the non-vocal tracks, my brain is not good with titles of instrumentals.

emil.y, Sunday, 6 July 2014 18:03 (eleven years ago)

I'll hold it until Tuesday evening. (Bedtime for me aka middle of the night UK.) The main thing at this point, imo, is to get it finished, including rollout, by the end of classic rock voting. But Tuesday evening is firm. Not ending on Thursday Afternoon, nope nope.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Sunday, 6 July 2014 18:28 (eleven years ago)

Cool, thanks WmC!

emil.y, Sunday, 6 July 2014 18:31 (eleven years ago)

Just got mine finished and sent, part 3 involved a bit more thought, in that I tried to pick tracks with an obvious Eno stamp on them rather than just my favourites. Meant a bit of reading up on who did what on some of those records but that was quite fun in itself. Looking forward to the rollout.

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 6 July 2014 19:20 (eleven years ago)

xp - You're welcome! Every poll seems to walk the fine line between stretching out the voting window to maximize returns and wearing out its welcome. I think this one will work out ok. It's funny to look back at the Led Zeppelin poll and see that we got 65 ballots in a one-week voting period.

I would pay ten bucks to listen to No Pussyfooting in a big space with a powerful PA system -- I would like to feel those low notes rattling my thorax.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Sunday, 6 July 2014 19:38 (eleven years ago)

Here Come the Warm Jets really is a remarkable album isn't it? I'm listening to it now and every song could go on my ballot.

Kitchen Person, Sunday, 6 July 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

Will definitely be interesting to see the ordering of the four '70s pop albums in part 2.

Gavin, Leeds, Sunday, 6 July 2014 22:31 (eleven years ago)

wait what? I thought that was for non-Eno albums...

polyamanita (sleeve), Monday, 7 July 2014 02:32 (eleven years ago)

It's for albums he produced or co-produced, but doesn't exclude his own work. Sorry, I didn't make that clear enough in the OP. You can redo that part if you want.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 7 July 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

you can always just do your Top 30 Eno tracks/songs and (if you have extra time) your Top 15 Eno albums give or take some added-in productions for other artists. the third list is a little trickier.

Paul, Monday, 7 July 2014 17:01 (eleven years ago)

I realized as I worked on my ballot that this poll includes not only my fave album of all time but also around 8 or so of my all time Top 100 fave tracks.

Paul, Monday, 7 July 2014 17:08 (eleven years ago)

yeah that sounds about right

polyamanita (sleeve), Monday, 7 July 2014 17:11 (eleven years ago)

I'm not sure that the newest Eno/Hyde album is as great as some have suggested but I find the closer 'Cells & Bells' really affecting. Probably would have made my top 30 if I'd have submitted today rather than yesterday. Will be interesting to see if how much recent stuff makes the poll. I'm familiar with most of the stuff Eno's done but I found my ballot to end up heavily weighted towards those first 4 solo albums. Hoping the poll enlightens me to some stuff I've overlooked.

Internet Alan, Monday, 7 July 2014 17:16 (eleven years ago)

Not complaining but I think this poll could have also done with a best Eno albums list. The productions list was good but I found assembling it a bit of a hodgepodge – half Eno albums and half "oh this was a good record he was associated with."

That said, I've always cared the most about the tracks polls so that was the meat of what I worked on.

WC, when will you start calculating? I have spent far too much time rethinking my ballot and might actually make some changes if that's an option. Otherwise, will live with what I sent.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 7 July 2014 18:02 (eleven years ago)

nothing ventured, nothing gained!

La Lechera, Monday, 7 July 2014 18:06 (eleven years ago)

Voted. But I was in no mood to vote for any Roxy or U2 (we've done them) and was keen to limit the Bowie and Talking Heads to the minimum as well (we've done or will be doing them too). Consequently, my 15 albums include only two where Eno isn't the credited artist or one of them. And I only offered a handful of things for the third category.

Jeff W, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:05 (eleven years ago)

That is where it gets hard for me. I love Roxy Music and wanted to include quite a few songs from those first two albums which are two of my favourite albums of all time but it seems wrong to vote for them as we just polled them. I started thinking well maybe I'll just limit myself to a few songs from each album but then it's not really an honest list of my actual favourite songs. I'm probably over thinking this really.

Kitchen Person, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:09 (eleven years ago)

I'll probably start plugging stuff into the spreadsheet tomorrow morning, so revised ballots today are not a problem!

I didn't do custom artwork for the rundowns on Zeppelin, Bowie and Miles, and I'm sorry to say that trend will continue.

it's not rocker science (WilliamC), Monday, 7 July 2014 19:30 (eleven years ago)

"Lux" is lovely, but listening back to "The Shutov Assembly" and "Neroli," I think this stuff (literally) writes itself. Those latter two were back in '92 and '93, "Lux" 2012, but if someone told me they all stemmed from the same session/generative program, I'd buy it. Literally in this case, too, because they are indeed all lovely, but I think Eno has days of this stuff in his vaults. Dunno if any or all of it is really any better than my "Bloom" app.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 July 2014 19:46 (eleven years ago)

I just used the list at the start of the thread detailing the albums eligible for the tracks poll as my reference when completing my productions part of the ballot and kept the collaborative stuff for the 3rd part.

Internet Alan, Monday, 7 July 2014 21:23 (eleven years ago)

i'm having trouble cutting any songs at all from my list
