So any predictions on when Mustard reaches his saturation point? I have mixed feelings, because individually I enjoy a lot of these songs, but collectively they make for a really monotonous playlist, and they've crowded so many other sounds and ideas out of rap/R&B radio.

Like, that Jeremih single is fine, but it's so safe and lazy, and such a missed opportunity. Here's a guy who does really interesting work with a variety of producers, often getting some unexpected sounds from them, and for his lead single we get another Mustard by numbers track

I see the evolution in his sound, and obviously it's a lot more varied than it was just two years ago—his keyboards have taken on an effervescence that's really wonderful—but so much of radio right now is hearing that same opening "boop boop boop boop" melody and thinking "ok, which Mustard track is this now."

yeah after all the wait for a proper Jeremih single, it's kind of anticlimactic for him to do a "Show Me" knockoff. that said, "Don't Tell 'Em" replaces every single person and musical element in "Show Me" with someone/something I like better, so it's an improvement at least.

mustard's trick is that his productions are quite a bit faster than the sounds that were popular before he broke. gives his productions a certain momentum that prob. partially responsible for radio/club dominance. i think there's a lot more room for him & others to play around with the formula

'dont tell em' is way more forced than 'show me' imo, inferior record

I guess it shouldn't be too surprising that Jeremih's first big single with Diddy as his manager would feature an interpolation of a way-overplayed megahit. But when he partnered with Diddy I hoped he was getting Dirty Money Diddy, not late-'90s lazy-sample Diddy

i don't dislike any of these songs and i think this is one of the best runs for contemporary rap/r&b in a while (not for one producer, though that also, but just for the genre in general). some of them are more forgettable than others obviously but i really love this sound.

i've even come around on some of the ones i didn't particularly like at first... "na na" has really grown on me

"vato" is an obvious rip off of "my nigga" but i really liked that song, was kinda disappointed when they immediately dropped it

between the beat & tinashe's vocals there's a real smoothness to "2 on" and i could see maybe how schoolboy q's gruffness was seen as a nice counterpoint to that but i just find it jarring and garish and think drake approaches the song much better

I haven't heard the Drake version, but I'm cool with Q on it (it's my second favorite on this list) and I can't see how Drake Draking all over it would improve it.

I almost wish bars/clubs I go to'd just play old-school LA rap at this point, Mustard tracks sound better on blown-out speakers like everything but still can't mask the weak aspects of it

Up Down is excellent, especially the remix (BOOSIE B), but the bass on Left, Right is too earth-shattering for me to not vote for it.

"Up Down" is great, yeah, love the slightly spectral melody in the background, there's a real stateliness to the whole thing.

I don't actually want bars to only play LA rap I've just been on that kick lately, just Iamsu's production crew is more my speed, mostly cuz their drums aren't weaksauce

Loads of these are great but Left Right is the only one that feels as if it's pulling you up and hitting you in the face. On a different day I might have voted for 2 On but that's trumped by the irrepressible greatness of the DJ Q remix.

In general I like Mustard more than the vocalists he works with, I don't want or need to hear 2 Chainz or Ty Dolla Sign on anything these days but I lap these up when he's working with people I actually give a shit about.

yeah he's not working with a whole lot of world class talent, but the chemistry he has with YG and some other people definitely elevates what they're doing together.

i know this statement won't fly on ILM very well but imo Mustard R&B mostly sucks the same way Lil Jon R&B mostly sucked. melodic vocals mostly don't work on his stuff, and even when they do it's often Ty Dolla Sign being a scumbag or something else that makes the song insufferable to me.

yeah otm. i LOVE mustard beats and am so thankful for him speeding up the tempo but aside from yg, he works with a whole bunch of people i don't care about that much - kinda feel that the current mustardwave is a missed opportunity in terms of who i'd love to be getting on his beats. this list should be 100% amazing, i shouldn't have to be cherrypicking dj mustard radio hits when he's at his peak! thank christ for the yg album for giving me enough of an extended fix. i actually feel like i'd like to hear more mustard r&b productions, obv not anyone with a big voice but natasha mosley sounds awesome on the yg album ("459" is the secret best track on it!) and he saved tinashe (for now) from corny hemsworth mediocrity. at the risk of being very much in character, he's so obviously the producer CIARA has been waiting for.

sorta sad that those are the only ones i 100% love. "who do you love" is aight but pretty mid-to-low table on the yg album. never really clicked with "paranoid", mostly because the lyrics just make me want to slap ty. "24 hours" beat is awesome but outstrips the vocalists embarrassingly. "no mediocre" is so frustrating, incredible beat and catchy hook but tip is so gross on it! "don't tell em" is uncharacteristically clumsy with the corny sample and v ill-fitting for jeremih (though i'd rather he does this than work with shlohmo ever again). "or nah" is so horrendously misogynist that i am happy calling anyone who reps for the og over the lil mo version a misogynist as well. i mean the vocals and message are so foregrounded that how can you even tune them out. fuck ty dolla $ign for that, seriously. similarly, i'm not hurrying to check out a song called "main chick" featuring chris brown.

i liked that my radio station actually mixed part of the k michelle version into chris brown's

would strongly suggest brits to listen to westwood these days for the most realistic and unadulterated appreciation of mustardwave available outside its natural habitat (ie he just sits there and zips through the lot of it, which doesnt seem like a big deal but it really does give u a much better feel for it as club radio music than you'd get otherwise)

thanks & yeah something like "up!" had to have that remix with 50 cent to crossover into non-west coast radio literally like a year after it was hitting in the bay. then you look at sage having two songs go top 40 or whatever, something definitely shifted.

the 50 cent verse seemed kind of incidental to that song's success, especially considering that it's one of only like two hits 50 cent has been on in the last five years

i don't think the sound itself was a liability. even as homogenized as rap radio gets, there's always room for outliers and beats by unknown producers. when "Rack City" came out there wasn't much like it on the radio but it still sounded like a hit and didn't get any resistance for standing out.

I actually did wonder if I was exclusively a California thing tho, like if it got a certain amount of spins elsewhere. the flip of this tho is that it's not like jeezy was a radio presence by the time of "RIP" (let alone "my nigga") and 2 chainz's only sizable solo hit was a drake hook. so you could argue that he did as much for them tho it really did feel like a true tandem sorta thing
