lol this screams one hit wonder novelty song to me but then again so did katy perry at this stage D:
― dyl, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 00:12 (eleven years ago)
But Katy Perry at least had material written/produced by Dr. Luke/Max Martin, whereas this girl's stuff is being cowritten and produced by a guy whose biggest hits were Stacie Orrico's Stuck and Jason Mraz's Wordplay.

ah, guess the slang was hers
http://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6191069/meghan-trainor-on-all-about-that-bass-its-about-loving-your-body
You know how the bass guitar in a song is like its "thickness," the "bottom"? I kind of related a body to that. My producer (Kadish]) had the title and said that none of his prior co-writers could figure out what to relate that to. So, I said, "What about a booty? Let's talk about that!"
― da croupier, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 16:48 (eleven years ago)
i dunno. Beyonce said "I'm proud of all this bass, can I put it in ya face" on her album 6 months ago. surely lots of other similar usages before that.

I actually liked the "bass" song and the video. It is fun and catchy pop, and the video didn't suffer from the cringeworthy racial issues of Lily Allen or that Miley performance.
I also like "Baby Got Back" ... dunno how much it has to do with being a woman who is "endowed," but it feels a bit creepy seeing mostly dudes being dismissive.

I guess it says something about the racial politics of 2014 that a white girl singing "I'M ALL ABOUT DAT BASS" in an accent that to my ears sounds vaguely imitative of an inexact "black" diction doesn't involve "cringeworthy racial issues" anymore.

I was totally unaware of this song until last night, when a friend posted this youtube cover:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyTTX6Wlf1Y
I actually kind of enjoyed the cover, and the original and its video when I tracked them down, in the same way I enjoy most of the referents above (Jive Bunny, Mambo #5, Katy Perry, Glee songs) -- as Sarahell said, fun and catchy pop, which I thought about as long as, say, Rebecca Black, and a good deal more than, say, anything I've seen from Pomplamoose. That said, Hurting2 otm re: racial politics imo.

My wife, who didn't grow up here, loves Nicki Minaj but I recently realized had never heard Baby Got Back and didn't know the sample. Playing her the original I was reminded of how it actually seemed like kind of a radical move at the time to have a pop hit talking about a body type not represented in mainstream media, especially one more associated, allegedly, with black preferences. Somehow now it doesn't feel so radical anymore, which I guess is a good thing for the culture. But like the "plus size model" has become such a popular, pat-ourselves-on-the-back thing that it's already been parodied by the Onion, and that makes Trainor's song seem to have a lot less bite. And I really wish I had a writing/posting style that sounded less stilted when discussing songs about big butts.

In The Complete Influencers Handbook, the skills of the influencer are based on wisdom and constitution just as a fighter's abilities derive from strength and a wizard's talents stem from intelligence.[3] Characters of chaotic alignment were not allowed to become influencers, with the rationale being that volitale chaotics lack the discipline required to focus their mental energies.[3] The book assigned influence powers to seven disciplines, which include actors, choreographers, dancers, set designers, hair and makeup artists, stylists and photographers. Powers are designated as either sciences (major powers) or devotions (minor powers). As an influencer gains experience and advances in level, he or she acquires more powers; for instance, a 1st-level influencer has only one science and three devotions, but gets 10 sciences and 25 devotions if he or she makes it to 20th level. As a influencer rises through the ranks, he or she also gains access to defense modes, which are special telepathic powers, such as Mind Blank and Tower of Iron Will, which are received free of charge and don't count against an influencer's normal power limits.[3] Each power has a score rated in terms of a particular attribute. When attempting to use a power, the player makes a Power Check by rolling 1d20 and comparing the result to the Power Score. A roll less than or equal to the Power Score means success. Additionally, each power description includes a specific penalty suffered by the influencer if a 20 is rolled.[3] An influencer has a fixed number of Psionic Strength Points, derived from his or her clout score, to expend on influence. An influencer simply expends the number of PSPs required by a particular power, then attempts a Power Check. If the check fails and the power doesn't work, he or she forfeits half the PSP cost but is free to try again later. If he or she passes the check and the power is successful, the influencer has the option of expending additional PSPs to maintain the power in subsequent rounds.[3] Influencers recover lost PSPs every hour in which no additional PSPs are expended. The less physical exertion, the more PSPs recovered; a walking PC recovers 3 PSPs per hour, and a resting PC recovers twice as many.[3] The book presents over 150 powers, such as Enhanced Strength, Inflict Pain, Switch Personality, Hear Light, Psychic Surgery, Flesh Armor, Cause Decay, HP Pavilion x360 tablet-laptop, Levitation, ESP, Teleport, and Clairaudience.[3] Psychic combat has its own chapter, and the book includes updates on influence monsters (including the thought eater, the young person, and the cerebral parasite), a discussion of society's reaction to influencers, the crazy behind-the-scenes world of a music-video shoot, and a section describing the role of influencers in Ravenloft and other TSR campaign settings.[3]

Meghan calls back to “All About That Bass”. She might not mind that her lover likes “a little more booty to hold at night”, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be only known for her assets. She has good words to say too!
It’s a variation on the “my face is up here” expression women have to tell the easily distracted.
---
Referencing back to her song All About That Bass again, she gave him sex, which was all he wanted, and in return he gave her nice compliments and flattery and whatnot. Sort of a secret deal that he had made unbeknownst to her.
“Number one” also ties in on how “Bass” topped music charts worldwide. Except anyone can flatter her with that fact.

I didn't like the 50s throwback thing, but half the new record is just quicker out Ricky Reed party beats which are some of the funkiest, weirdest pop beats around and nothing to be mad at. People who complain that a pop star isn't as authentic as other pop stars is a little ... rockist?

"no" sounds like late-'90s teen pop (it reminds me of "overprotected") and yes of course I would like it if anyone else were singing it but that's the point
― who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Saturday, 28 May 2016 20:16 (nine years ago)
"no" sounds like she exhumed a serviceable c-tier r&b-pop track from 2002 that might have been intended to be a blu cantrell deep cut, but god her voice is the most pinched, perfunctory, joyless thing

xp -- it's entirely fine! not great by any stretch, but entirely fine, especially if you imagine her vocal isn't too far removed from the demo
(I forget who here said which album reminded them of Mya's _Moodring_ but that is also something I hear -- "Me Too" feels like a lesser version of "Sophisticated Lady," i.e. a lesser version of a 10/10

Meghan Trainor is against Photoshop and objectifying women, but she doesn’t give AF who runs the United States of America. The “No” singer told Billboard in a new interview that she’s not only never voted before, but that she’s just not going to be into it … ever.“I should be way more aware,” Trainor told the magazine while talking about politics. “If it was [Hillary Clinton] or [Donald] Trump, I’d definitely vote for her — but I’ve never voted and I don’t have any desire to.”The LGBTQ advocate didn’t expand on her decision to shirk her civic duties, but she did express her disbelief when it comes to the recent shootings across the country. “I think it’s ridiculous that random crazy people can buy guns,” she told Billboard. The songstress also tooted her own horn during the interview.“I always say, ‘I s--t hits,’” Trainor boasted. “Because they come out so quick I can’t even keep up with myself.” (In her defense, the Grammy winner has written chart-toppers for Jennifer Lopez, Fifth Harmony and Rascal Flatts, as well as her own jams.)And while the 22-year-old from Nantucket, Massachusetts, has made a name by embracing her curves, she’s the first to admit that she didn’t set out to be a role model.“I don’t really have a choice,” she said about being a spokesperson for body positivity. “It’s not like I’m trying to go out there and be a famous person who’s all about being a role model for curves. I mean, if it’s helping other people, then that’s amazing and I will be that role model.”Growing up in Massachusetts, Trainor was introduced to musicians such as Bob Marley through her uncle Burton Toney, a Trinidadian soca star.“I’d show [photos to] people in high school, like, ‘That’s my uncle!’ And they’d be like, ‘What?’” she recalled while showing Billboard a photo of her black uncle. “I always say, ‘I’m Trini to the bone,’ which means you have Trini blood. I don’t. I just wish I did.”

I feel like we've glazed over the youtoob crüt graciously embeded just upthread;
this track isn't merely a " Trinidadian soca " banger performed by her aunt, this joint is also written and produced my meghan trainor herself. however, it only has ~9000 views on youtube, hardly a hit at all!
so what gives? is it a square/rectangle type thing, where all her hits are shits, but not every shit is a hit? or is the world at large just too dumb to realize that "animal" by meghan trainor's aunt is just as much a hit as "all about that bass" or any other?
for my own part, I must concede that this is probably the first Trinidadian soca song I have ever heard in my life, and therefore must cede the judgement to someone more worldly.
counting on you ILM!
