TBH I think his 2014 has been better than most competing artists.

he has depth as a rapper & isn't a singles machine.

My Chief Keef best of 2014 comp would be something like:

1. Chief Keef - Gucci Gang feat. Justo and Tadoe
2. Chief Keef - Close That Door
3. Chief Keef - Hundreds
4. Chief Keef - Ight Doe
5. Chief Keef - Killer
6. Chief Keef - Tec
7. Chief Keef - Make It Count
8. Chief Keef - No
9. Chief Keef - Pull Up
10. Chief Keef - Save Me
11. Chief Keef - Slam Dunkin
12. Chief Keef - War
13. Gucci Mane and Chief Keef - Top in the Trash
14. Yae Yae Jordan feat. YNS Cheeks and Chief Keef - Strapped (Remix)
15. Chief Keef - Oh My Goodness

rap steve gadd (D-40), Wednesday, 3 September 2014 19:37 (ten years ago) link

16. Chief Keef - Love No Thotties

Kenn, who declined to give his real name for this article, is originally from the Yamagata Prefecture of Japan. He produced the beat for “Bang,” as well as several of Keef’s other songs. He discovered hip-hop as a teenager living in Japan, and became a big fan of Dr. Dre, Nas and Cam’ron. (“[Stillmatic and Come Home With Me] are classics to me,” Kenn said when asked about his favorite performers. “I used to listen to those every day.”) When he turned 18, around 2005, Kenn moved to Tokyo, and within two years followed a friend to New York City. “I always looked up to him,” he explained. “He was doing music with people [in the U.S.]. I was like, I want to do music like him.” The United States completely changed Kenn’s perceptions of hip-hop. “Right here, everything is life-sized,” Kenn said in a thick accent. “Radio, parties, or even clothes, anything. This is real. In Japan, it’s different. People get older and they start to listen to it. Right here, it’s like babies listen to hip-hop, they grow up with the rhythm.”

agree that "sosa style" is a good song for 2014 keef stuff to orbit around but i actually think it's one of his few songs from this year where he has a really dope & unique beat to work with (also "no")

sorta feel like keef has been working with kinda crappy/amateur beats for a while so i was particularly excited about his infamous 75%/40% tweet about recording 30 new songs with chop

anyway can't believe you're sleeping on "how it go" -- i think it's one of his few songs from this year that really nails the stylistic aesthetic of the song barely being held together without it, you know, actually not being held together (which is how i feel about something like "ight dow"). also weird mix of pathos and defiance that i think is particularly evocative here both vocally & lyrically

nah it's not even the only beat to use that trick ("Gucci Gang" illustrates how effective it is, though) and 12hunna is one of the best producers out ... listen to "hundreds" and "pull up" and "make it count," those are top of the line beats. The drum programming is so intricate and strange.

I notice there are actually a few "citgo" type songs but after the corny indie fuxx wave of citgo support I hestiate to enthuse about the "tec" style shit now.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 15:31 (ten years ago) link

That "Gucci Gang" track is crazy - first thing from Keef that I've heard for a while that's made me sit up and pay attention.

MikoMcha, Friday, 5 September 2014 15:33 (ten years ago) link

listen to "hundreds" and "pull up" and "make it count"

i've heard these songs.... i don't hear at all what you hear in those beats. they're completely non-functional.

if ilovemakonnen was rapping over these beats and vice was praising how "intricate and strange" the production is you'd be calling bullshit

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 September 2014 15:52 (ten years ago) link

also i have a pretty high tolerance for poorly produced beats but most of those 12hunna beats sound like total shit and i can't vibe to them at all

I'd be saying that if it was makonnen over 'sosa style' also. you're totally wrong man, i don't know how else to put it. try downloading the songs off itunes or something so you have them on good quality and aren't listening in a hasty 30 second itunes binge.

You're letting your fetish for melodic autotune pop cheese get in the way of your discernment here. the spindly beats w/ all the little pointillist details and disorienting grooves 12hunna is doing is way more interesting than 'how it go.' people are sleeping on it because the only versions are super tagged up by annoying dj hustlenomics drops on youtube so they can sell the NO DJs on itunes etc

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:08 (ten years ago) link

To be clear, it isn't the sort of thing I'd wanting to be listening to very much, if at all. Especially the video, really doesn't look like anyone's having much of a good time...

MikoMcha, Friday, 5 September 2014 16:08 (ten years ago) link

i think those 12hunna songs play far too much into keef's formless tendencies... i think something like "pull up" is much closer to the stuff of his 2013 mixtapes that you didn't really like than you want to admit

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:09 (ten years ago) link

I imagine Keef being sort of just pushed in front of the camera in his drug stupor, everyone making sure he doesn't fall over or pass out unconscious.

the 12hunna beats are purposefully "interesting" but to what end?

who produced "jet li"? that's the best kind of keef beat imo. it's like a midpoint between the effects 12hunna uses and something like jim jonsin that forces him to use more structure

le goon (J0rdan S.), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:14 (ten years ago) link

"bang bros" beat >>>> any of those 12hunna songs you mentioned

no

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:21 (ten years ago) link

i think you're following some previous idea of how his best stuff is supposed to sound & not letting yourself be flexible enough for the new direction. the way 'make it count' works is esp clever, beat builds up this mood by adding elements over time, then dropping out and picking up again as if losing and regaining energy, it's very disorienting and immersive

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:26 (ten years ago) link

the complexity of the drum programming in a record like that or 'hundreds' is to an end, they all hang together—listen to the kick drop on 'hundreds' dropping in triplet pattern, it's got this like nervous momentum while the melody twists around in this weird fancy, regal feel ... idk this is hard to describe, but this stuff is super unique...the only record that the 12hunna stuff reminds me of is meek's 'off the corner'

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:32 (ten years ago) link

oh god 'bang bros' is a perfect example, you're looking for one-note euphoria whereas this stuff is much more about queasy uncertainty, ambiguity, uneveness

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 16:33 (ten years ago) link

Love Sosa & Don't Like = Keef having a good time > *

longneck, Friday, 5 September 2014 16:55 (ten years ago) link

well "bang bros" happens to be euphoric but i just think it's a much better production. i don't hear anything inherently euphoric in the production even though durk went there with it.

what i LIKE about new artists like keef is that he makes popular rappers like Kanye and Pusha T, for example, seem old and dated. Kanye knows hip hop is all about staying new that's why he does shit like 808s and Yeezus. He has to go completely different otherwise he's gone and forgotten. For example TI was brave getting on a track with Yung Thugger, but he managed to stay with him and not get overshadowed and sound old. Unlike say, Tyga on hookah, who's style sounds really dated and prosaic next to YT.

rap steve gadd (D-40), Friday, 5 September 2014 20:07 (ten years ago) link

Tyga isn't really generic imo because he always shoots for something beyond just competent with his flows and word choices and then falls somewhere below competent because he's a terrible vocalist who uses words he doesn't understand. it's like the exact opposite of capable unambitious Jeezy types.

lol. citgo was C.I.F. bc it was a fairly marginal bonus track for him that wasn't even as big as "Kobe" or "They Know" but became this online rallying pt for the cloud rap contingent. dont get me wrong i like the song. but the argument im making for 12hunna's production is that it's kind of central to what he's doing right now, that it helps to organize a disparate selection of loosies if you find the constellation in the tracks & by & large I think 12hunna's sound has been a defining part of the '14-era Keef sound

Not at all opposed to calling him the cis fka twigs though

for the past 2 years its been a perpetual game of ppl saying he was on the last of his 15 minutes yet he remains one of the only rap rookie able to push out major label albums, has sustained as one of the genre's most popular artists, and has continually evolved as a performer. u write mash notes to marginal heard-by-15-people cassette tape only releases so

i'll believe it when this supposed second Interscope album actually hits stores tbh

he has been kind of impressively resilient on an "always in the top artists on livemixtapes" level but i mean 2 years ago you were saying keef-branded headphones were gonna be a big christmas list item

this is the current livemixtapes top ten:
1. Migos
2. Kevin Gates
3. Gucci Mane
4. Rich Homie Quan
5. Young Thug
6. Young Jeezy
7. Lil Boosie
8. Lil Wayne
9. Chief Keef
10. Yo Gotti

notable that the only guys there that haven't had mainstream radio hits in the last few months are Gucci and Keef (and Kevin Gates, although he's starting to break through to radio right now). Gucci is obviously kind of a unique case, but clearly Keef is hanging onto the mixtape audience better than, like, Ca$h Out or LoveRance or whoever else had one big radio song 2 years ago.

lol that was funny but not really what you implied i said

two notes about his lack of chart success: first is that his biggest songs came right before the digital streams were incorporated into charts. second is that i've heard that a lot of radio PDs were shook by the 'chicago violence' negative publicity and wouldn't play his stuff. (Or any of the drill stuff)

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 03:12 (ten years ago) link

in my world of young people chief keef was like all anyone talked about for months around the release of finally rich, i'm genuinely not sure those same people remember who he is anymore

i remember a few months after "Love Sosa" peaked on the charts i spent a weekend in South Carolina and it was the #1 song on the station down there. it seemed like his stuff kinda spread out regionally and didn't all hit at once. i think he just didn't hit all regions on the same level. he never seemed to make a heavy impact in Baltimore (where Boosie and Gucci and Meek have super strong fanbases).

Bobby Shmurda jacked a beat from a Lloyd Banks song that was made by the producer of Meek Mill's biggest hits, nothing about the song really scans to be as more Chicago than east coast. I feel like Chicago came up and claimed ownership of this whole post-regional trap/nu-gangsta rap diaspora that is happening in dozens of different cities.

some dude, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:02 (ten years ago) link

I mean he says "thot" but the whole world took that from Chicago a good while ago already

some dude, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:03 (ten years ago) link

lol @ that sped up version of wait being all over youtube. Here's the original version: http://www.soundcloudfile.com/fphbi5 (seems like he did this song in the last few days because he recently put up the beat to this on ig in the studio)

Raccoon Tanuki, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:13 (ten years ago) link

Something about his music I find leaves me a bit cold though. Even the songs that I love seem too distant at times.

Raccoon Tanuki, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:17 (ten years ago) link

They also say "with the shits" and "broski" and us other Chicago slang, come on al. The use of adlibs, the video style, shmurda even says they were inspired by drill in interviews. And in his interview for global grind he basically says that pre-keef street rap was basically dead in his neighborhood and after everyone wanted to be a rapper

I do think the song is good and adds its own unique flavor to it, but saying it's not influenced by drill is nonsense

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 16:56 (ten years ago) link

ok i'm not talking about slang or video style or even his inspiration, what chicago songs does "hot nigga" SOUND like? bobby shmurda doesn't rap like any chicago rapper i can think of, it's much more...straightforward rapping, cleaner-sounding beats

lex pretend, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 17:35 (ten years ago) link

i think it sounds chicago bc chicago figured out an east coast urban meets down south rap style & that's basically what this is ...

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 17:51 (ten years ago) link

ppl keep talking about the beat like it's so farfetched that it would be used in chicago but there are plenty of chicago beatmakers who make east coast sounding beats in the street rap scene too like chase davis

deej loaf (D-40), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 19:22 (ten years ago) link

yeah but his music doesn't sound like shmurda, i think there was just something in his attitude that appealed to new york types

his music at least was way more straightforward than keef's

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 19:50 (ten years ago) link

anyway most of the hyped 'crossover' songs out of Chicago since Finally Rich have been dogshit with no radio potential, including that crit bait I TERRIFY MY CITY one, you gotta be pretty dense to wonder why "Hot Nigga" and not those songs

some dude, Wednesday, 17 September 2014 20:14 (ten years ago) link

there were multiple lil durk singles from lat year that were dope and had def jam's label push... i'm not saying those songsa re better than "hot nigga" or that the situations are 1:1 (all the vine stuff w/ shmurda) but there's a huge gulf between shmurda inching his way to a top 10 pop hit and durk not being able to break charts at all #TeamTinfoil

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 17 September 2014 20:18 (ten years ago) link

to be clear, i think there's something to the argument that this succeeded almost bc it 'misunderstands' drill (or is less constrained by it) able to make shortcuts from pt a -> pt b much in the way Waka managed to make Gucci look overly subtle when he first came out. keef is still clearly the better & more influential artist. And there are plenty of radio-worthy singles from indie artists that don't get that signal boost from a major label

but shmurda is also standing on drill's shoulders bc the second he arrived major labels were chasing him and Epic capitalized on his viral single IMMEDIATELY. The second they could, they patched the song through coast to coast....at any rate i'm not making this up about radio not wanting to play drill shit:

Chance is just off that whole radar, by design really. unlike Keef or guys who signed with French Montana or whatever.

it's weird to see the level of hysteria and sensitivity over anything having to do w/ violence in Chicago vs. how every other profitable gangsta rapper w/ a gun charge or whatever hasn't been distanced from the industry one bit.

it's def clear that his 2013 was hurt by this but i think a lot of what's been attributed to it as far as his rap style (as opposed to his self-mixing work from bang 2) is probably not related, or at the very least id caution the direct 'he did drugs -> his music sounds like this' presupposition

deej loaf (D-40), Saturday, 4 October 2014 18:17 (ten years ago) link

maaaaan these new tracks playlist

he's producing now for money reasons I'm sure and tbh I like these beats better than most of his mixtape throwaways

Raccoon Tanuki, Monday, 6 October 2014 17:58 (ten years ago) link

and i think he's getting steadily more losing his mind but his delivery is ridiculous at times

Raccoon Tanuki, Monday, 6 October 2014 18:00 (ten years ago) link

why would he be producing 'for money' when he would get more money for a verse, and all the beats are going to himself?

is that a serious post

Raccoon Tanuki, Monday, 6 October 2014 19:39 (ten years ago) link

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 6 October 2014 19:45 (ten years ago) link

well he tweeted as much himself is a not bad place to start. Your money is doubled, tripled if you produce and write your own music. He's also quite good at it, so why not.

Raccoon Tanuki, Monday, 6 October 2014 19:55 (ten years ago) link

an open interscope budget? is that still a thing? you'd know better than I would but I'd be surprised if there weren't a trad v. specific "here's how much we're spending on the studio for each release" clause in his contract

The Complainte of Ray Tabano, Monday, 6 October 2014 19:57 (ten years ago) link

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 23 October 2014 20:27 (ten years ago) link

One thing I like with him is I don't think he's in it for the money, yet.

Raccoon Tanuki, Thursday, 23 October 2014 20:56 (ten years ago) link

I never got the impression that rappers who make a bazillion songs with very loose plans for eventual release like Keef or Gucci were paying producers much (or maybe not even anything) up front for beats. like they get paid later if it ends up on a budgeted project but until then the producers just hang out and work to build a relationship with the artist and be a part of their team. Is that unrealistic? Is it even possible that these guys who make SO MANY songs are spending a stack or a few stacks every time they rap on a beat?

The relation between the two lines is that they rhyme

this is a thing you said just a few posts back

"food" and "you" are slant rhyme only if you have a very very low bar for slant rhyme. they're assonant, that's pretty much as far as you can really push that. if they actually rhymed, you might say there was this relation between the two lines. I wanna be clear before we further unpack your poetics: "food" and "you" are an example of a good slant-rhyme?

I posit that the purpose of the slant rhyme in this instance isn't to set a high bar for quality slant rhyming so you can appraise his slant rhyming abilities but to serve a function in relation to the song's broader purpose. Basically you're missing the forest for the trees if you think that's the point of it, but this seems so obvious I suspect you're just trolling

I'm gonna need a bit more on why the new Keef is amazing. Granted it might be unique, but... uh... do you want more music to sound like this, do you want it played in clubs, on the radio, blasting from cars etc etc? I don't necessarily think it's bad I just think it sounds like a blind alley. Like, what does he do better on these songs (better than himself, better than anyone else, etc.) And again, no snark. I love changing my mind.

I think Keef is terrible, but yeah. Of all the things to call out, it's rhyming 'food' and 'you' ?!?!

For the record I do like a couple of tracks on this Keef tape.

since i been eatin out i like a bunch of food
who the fuck is you, i dont run with you

i agree that these are good raps -- in two lines keef communicates the way that his life has changed by becoming a prodigal rap star. he can afford to eat out now, and he's learned that he likes new food as he tries it. but in the next line he cuts that feeling of wonder by reverting back to the paranoid kid who grew up in a place that teaches you to trust very few people. he's showing both sides of the coin in a very few number of words.

i think there may have been some over-heralding of the production, which obv wouldnt work out of context if he were selling those beats to other artists, but the tape is great imo. and i mean... i just dispute a bunch of stuff you wrote, cf his supposed laziness, that gucci is outrapping him on anything, that he 'cant' rap on beat, that he only had one hit record (i mean...you yrself were saying you heard 'love sosa'—his second hot 100 release—on radio months later). i did it all for the 'nuki (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:27 (ten years ago) link

I brought this to this thread to make it about keef rather than the review bc i feel v weird defending ~my writing~—any flaws or w/e (aside from the ice cubes thing bc come on) are probably not productive to get into

I am though interesting in debating ideas abt his worthwhileness or lack thereof ... i feel like there's this sense that he has zero relevance or that his rap style is a joke or one-dimensional and i don't really think that's so

like, at one level it's about whether or not he's even a real phenomenon: do people care.

then it's about, OK, if we grant that he is a real phenomenon, why do people care? And I think a lot of people would say its bc of what he represents, or bc he's 'real', or bc of white fetishization, all of which is true to a degree but also applies to lots of other performers ~so my contention would be, there is something musical happening that people care about, and maybe I have no captured it in my piece! entirely possible. Which is why i don't want to debate that piece so much. But I do think the ~project~ of saying, why do people like this, musically? is a worthwhile one. but then, i enjoy listening to it, moreso than most rap music these days, so

maybe i still need to listen to it more, but lyrically, i dont find him esp great. he seems to still have that habit of incoherence and lines not really hanging together, but delivery-wise, i cant really complain, so i dont really care that much about what hes saying, though he does have a knack of finding weirdly memorable phrases and imagery. it is weird though, this is the one rap album/tape in a long while that i want to keep playing. theres a lot going on in there.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 10:40 (nine years ago) link

yeah he has a few too many throwaway lines that could be from a random rap lyric generator. but it doesnt ruin the effect for me - tbh i think the appeal is more the overall package than him being a particularly great rapper, on paper at least. his voice, delivery, and that sense of malevolence/dread/depression, compensate.

StillAdvance, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:11 (nine years ago) link

Yeah, I like Keef and "Faneto" is one of my favorite rap songs of 2014, but deej's constant harping on the notes he doesn't play and his engaging lyricism seem more like "just justifying my taste here" than any actual thing a normal non-deej human could ever hear in these songs

so i kept note of the 15mins i caught and i'm glad i did cos i found it quite enlightening tbh, compared to a lot of the uphill discourse in general about keef n chiraq's place in the world

keef - fool ya
bobby bitch
migos - hit em
waka - o lets do it
lil reese - us
young jeezy - flexin
keef - ballin
future- itchin

was struck (not least cos of them not being brand new or necessarily agreed classics on a drivetime mixshow) by the v particular selection of the tracks around keef's, among which he made perfect natural sense in a way that wouldnt have scanned were one to just list migos, jeezy, future, keef in parity

why does it need to be high profile. kanye and a lot of the big stars of today usually make a point of performing alone without so much as a hype man, but for like 20 years it was a cliche of mainstream rap (and still is in a lot of underground rap scenes) for an MC to have a ton of friends mobbing the stage while they perform.

I think the underlying question here is in what universe it matters whether or not Kanye brought a bunch of dudes on stage because Chief Keef once brought a bunch of dudes on stage.

longneck, Thursday, 26 March 2015 21:59 (nine years ago) link

Keef either manages to make a truly great song or album again or he doesn't. That's what it boils down to. Sorry For The Weight is fun and interesting and I can see why you would like it. I prefer the new Future tape myself, but it's better than the recent Gucci tapes. I can see myself becoming a fan (again) sometime soon if he keeps it up. However, nothing he has done lately really justifies searching for the secret keefness of things everywhere. Who cares why Ross tossed his shirt? Really?

longneck, Thursday, 26 March 2015 22:04 (nine years ago) link

what are you even talking about? 'searching'? all i did was point out the ways in which he changed the texture of the game rn, it's not like i have to go hunting for it

and keef's been releasing some great rap music which again, doesn't require 'hunting' if you're someone who pays any attention to rap mixtapes

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 26 March 2015 22:10 (nine years ago) link

How do you make that discussion interesting though? This texture changing business seems really slight for someone who is moderately into keef. The flamethrower and the grime connection just seem so much more interesting than Keef having a bunch of dudes on stage. And yeah, I know you think he is making great rap music. I also know that he's big in Chicago. I'm not seeing his musical impact yet in any significant way though. He either needs real hits that people will actually recognize or something truly sublime. I'm hoping for both but I'm not convinced yet.

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 26 March 2015 22:28 (nine years ago) link

and sublime is in the longneck of the beholder

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 26 March 2015 22:30 (nine years ago) link

basically i only think it's interesting inasmuch as you think kanye's interpretation of it is interesting—as i say in the blurb al linked I don't particularly think kanye making tropes out of keef's persona & presentation is the most interesting part of current kanye (but then I'm somewhat whatever on current kanye as is). The only thing I'm arguing with is Al's contention that Kanye simply is NOT channelling keef here intentionally—I think it should be obvious to anyone paying attention where his inspiration was in this moment.

StillAdvance, Friday, 27 March 2015 17:03 (nine years ago) link

btw i think it's crazy for shiplo and others to just totally wipe away keef's influence on kanye specifically. david might be putting too fine of a point on it by referencing specific keef shows in chicago but given kanye's open drill influence it's pretty easy to trace a line from something like the "i don't like" video to the images kanye is presenting with "all day"

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 March 2015 17:11 (nine years ago) link

it just seems like such a broad vague thing to "trace" -- there's nothing about what Kanye and the guys he's onstage with are wearing or how they're moving or how he's rapping that is specific to drill. the fact that Kanye knows Keef and is from Chicago doesn't magically turn some loose correlation into causation.

some dude, Friday, 27 March 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

fwiw that's pretty much how grime artists - which is what those guys were - have always performed going back a decade+ now

lex pretend, Friday, 27 March 2015 18:51 (nine years ago) link

well he remixed him, still performs the song, put him on his album etc

i'm not saying that kanye was like "i need to have a bunch of guys onstage with me because chief keef did it in his videos" but you really don't have to draw a far line from keef's visuals to that. (to say nothing of how "all day" sounds). of course kanye put his own twist on it -- he didn't have scrawny kids in jeans with boxers sticking out of the tops behind him -- and the grime connection seems real too, but i do think you need to be looking the other way to not see the influence.

J0rdan S., Friday, 27 March 2015 19:24 (nine years ago) link

no al's right i'm definitely only suggesting keef inspired kanye bc the two are from the same metropolis, great reasoning

deej loaf (D-40), Friday, 27 March 2015 19:30 (nine years ago) link

of course I wasn't saying that. Kanye bites from rappers from all over the country (and the world) constantly, Keef included, and often it's obvious and undeniable. In this particular case, I think it's pretty tenuous and arguable.

some dude, Friday, 27 March 2015 19:33 (nine years ago) link

well i guess we'll have to agree to disagree in this stupid argument

I guess Hammond had the understanding that the "Craze Fest" would proceed, but Chief Keef was not supposed to be part of the bill, in hologram form or otherwise. Still, seems kind of weird to stop a hologram performance. I worry about the precedent set wrt hip-hop concerts.

Deej, I plead guilty to underestimating Keef for a while but that still doesn't mean twitter dude and certain other guys (you) aren't overestimating his talents and output, not to mention Meek's. At Keef's best, he's good and interesting, and he's good and interesting more often than you would think. But there's a lot of bullshit in between. And a best of YT or Future would be way better than a best of Keef.

I will never plead guilty to propping up lesser talented people "in his absence" though. Lil Uzi Vert is cool enough but a lesser talent, and I never pretended otherwise.

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:06 (eight years ago) link

(that lots of rap fans also agree with & isnt nearly as isolated an opinion as you seem to think)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:07 (eight years ago) link

the idea that hes some sort of soulja boy /lil b type figure has been so drastically overstated by people too lazy to keep up w/ his music when its no less incoherent or inconsistent than young thug (IMO he's more consistent than thug but ymmv)

Listen to my homeboy Fantano (D-40), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:11 (eight years ago) link

I like both Soulja Boy and Lil B.Soulja Boy's talent is mostly for copying others but Lil B' is an original whose influence stretches to Chance The Rapper who is arguably the best and most interesting artist of everyone out atm. So that kind of outweighs his great stretches of mixtape desert.

Keef's influence is obviously real but I'm not sure if anything great will come out of it or if he'll make another great song or mixtape/album. Sounds like he's treading water right now. And while his best songs are good and electrifying I'm having a hard time imagining why you'd prefer them to Future's or Thug's best. That's why I think you're overestimating him. That I lost interest in him for a while is regrettable but to me at least it's also about me not living in a Keef-centred universe. I imagine I will lose interest in him again soon unless he follows up with something new and great. He's just not THAT fascinating to me.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Monday, 7 March 2016 18:37 (eight years ago) link

Keef's influence is obviously real but I'm not sure if anything great will come out of it or if he'll make another great song or mixtape/album.

"If he'll make another great song" GTFO he's had hits every year since he came out, just because you're ignoring them doesn't mean they don't exist. Never mind tapes—you mean like AlmightySo, BFTD2, AlmightyDP, Finally Rollin?

Sounds like he's treading water right now.

a lot of his recent stuff, like nobody 2, has been leaks of shit from 2 years earlier...thats totally his xanned out music from 2014...

And while his best songs are good and electrifying I'm having a hard time imagining why you'd prefer them to Future's or Thug's best. That's why I think you're overestimating him. Earned it is cool enough but Faneto is the one song that made me believe Keef might still have som life in him. It qualifies as a "truly great song" to me in that it makes me want to jump around and its chorus is stuck in my head. Would be interesting to read a "milestones of keef's career" breakdown, preferably song by song, since he's the only one who's not treading water right now.
