Mr Twin Sister

Don't know why this group decided to add the "Mr" to their name, it feels awkward to me, but then I never paid attention to them before really so whatever the fuck.

Brad and Deej hipped me to their new album and first under this moniker, and they were so so right, brad says "smoke weed listen to sade" and deej says "maurice fulton" and I say not much cos I keep listening to this instead. But it does make me imagine an album built around the aesthetic that A Mountain of One explored shamefully only once on their cover of "Can't Be Serious" with Martina Topley Bird. Anyway I'm totally obsessed with it and so should you be.

I want an extended version of "Out of the Dark". I suppose I could always mess around with freeware audio editors again.

The most implausible part of the Veronica Mars movie was that Twin Sister's "All Around and Away We Go" was presented as a hit for a Katy Perry-like pop star.

I'd seen this name on places like Pitchfork, but I had no idea Twin Sister had added "Mr" to the name. I just thought it was someone different.

This sounds totally unlike what they sounded like 3-4 years ago.

I think that's the reason for the change but i still don't like it, it feels like they had a messy car crash with Mr Mr.

2011 alb very good too so damn confident but no time for smug "Beep beep."

Loved their EPs in 2009-10 - think "All Around And Away We Go" was my favourite track by anyone that year - then found their first LP in 2011 to be a huge let-down, just a few highlights and "Saturday Sunday" was just terrible. Will try to check out their new stuff with an open mind.

Yeah the first half is just gorgeous. The second half seems so unexpected after those songs but it somehow it really works as a whole album.

This LP is now my favourite this year, not a weak spot on it, glad they've stopped trying to be an indie band and embraced this strung-out 5am post-disco thing, her voice deserves it.

"Color Your Life" from the Twin Sister days is one of my favorite pieces of music this decade. I guess they're not giving it away free anymore but it's very much worth whatever price they're asking.

Finally picked up 'In Heaven', the Twin Sister full length, today for £1 and am quite enjoying it. Will eventually get around to Mr Twin Sister.

"In Heaven" is very nice. Haven't heard the new one. Saw them in LA the other night and they were great!

IIRC, Andrea announced a multiple sclerosis diagnosis prior to the album release in 2014.

it's not like the last album wasn't incredibly great but this new material collectively seems like another huge leap forward, I don't think I've anticipated an album this much since Shaking The Habitual

'Tops and Bottoms' is magic. Knowing the lyrics really opened it up for me. Consumerism, anxiety, the male gaze, superficiality, ego, etc...addressed with serious economy.
Or, I could be reading too much into it. heh

Either way, what a special vocalist/lyricist. Something that I'm liking more about these singles than the last album is how up front and idiosyncratic the vocal performances
are again.

Also, saw the first show of the tour last Thursday. If you can, go. Didn't realize how much I'd missed em!

i've put Power of Two and Echo Arms in between Alien FM and Koh-I-Noor and it takes the album from a 9 to a 10

I also wish that they had done an extended Echo Arms instead of Power Of Two, although both feel like some lost Paradise Garage classic

idk the album is perfectly wonderful without them, i’m fine with 1 awesome album and 1 awesome double-sided single

yeah i understand why they left it off, but i already regret not buying that echo arms/power of two single at the merch table.

it just adds a little more of their dance side to it and sort of balances it out a bit better, the album feels a lot slower without them. it's great as it is but i definitely prefer my edit

I’ve always liked this band but this album is on another level.

Saw them last night in Seattle and am still floating. They are so tight and dialed in with their sound. Stood next to the board and their sound guy does as much as anyone on stage, constantly finessing the mix and dubbing out the drums. Definitely felt like the last time I’ll see them in a small club.

They were called Twin Sister, another act with the same name sued them, they had to take something else that was different but still recognisably the same band. They don't really like the name, I think.

I did always wonder why they didn't choose a completely new name as they've changed direction drastically since those days and "Mr Twin Sister" is such a dreadful name, to the point where convincing people to listen to them is harder than it needs to be

Hahaha, no. I was just making a corny joke about the divisiveness of their name. It's objectively awful but somehow perfect for the band they now are i.e. the best band going.

despite not being totally sold on the new album yet, i went to their show last nite and it was fantastic

They were magical in SF. 'Tops and Bottoms' really clicked for me. The vocal distortion jumping jacks she would do are really effective live!

So I've been thinking about the early years when they were just called Twin Sister. This era gets imo unfairly neglected, probably because the only LP they put out then ("In Heaven") is easily the worst thing they've ever released. But! This was the time I first got into the group - I heard All Around And Away We Go at the end of 2010 and obsessed over them between then and the release of In Heaven the next year - they used to have everything free to download from their blog including heaps of demos and snippets, at one point they seemed to be putting something up there every day. The best of it was earth-shattering (I still consider All Around And Away We Go one of my favourite tracks of all time, perfect example of being utterly derivative and utterly transcendent at the same time), most was of a much lower quality though.

So I've sifted through these 80 or so tracks and ended up with mostly stuff from EPs and the LP, but I think it's a good introduction to the early days of the group. Love how they seem to be trying on completely different sounds with each track at first. Oh, and the two demos at the start can (maybe) be skipped if you want to get to the actual songs, but I wanted it to go in chronological order so there they stay.

It's in the form of a mix because I shouldn't put mp3s up here obvs, however if want to put it together yourself then the demos they are still easily findable online from the good ole mp3 blog era, and the other tracks are available for sale

Ah, such a magical show last night. Been dying to see them since Color Your Life but it makes sense that only "All Around.." remains on the setlist. That sounded better than ever, somehow. There was a new song, confirmed they're still pushing forward :)

I was there too - didn't mind the venue that much. small but

wish I had known, I'd have bought you a pint! I spent 9/10ths of the set unable to see anything, the choice to have a "stage" that's barely an inch higher than the crowd space means a 5ft5 wisp like me either needs to be down the front or resign themselves to the view of the back of somebody's head.

They are truly a national treasure and anything new or archival is great to have. I last saw them in Seattle in maybe 2017 and they were unreal. My completely unfounded guess it that Andrea’s MS battle limits their band functions.
