Mr Twin Sister

Don't know why this group decided to add the "Mr" to their name, it feels awkward to me, but then I never paid attention to them before really so whatever the fuck.

Brad and Deej hipped me to their new album and first under this moniker, and they were so so right, brad says "smoke weed listen to sade" and deej says "maurice fulton" and I say not much cos I keep listening to this instead. But it does make me imagine an album built around the aesthetic that A Mountain of One explored shamefully only once on their cover of "Can't Be Serious" with Martina Topley Bird. Anyway I'm totally obsessed with it and so should you be.

I think this should appeal to my balearic crew, to my sade crew, to my dixon crew, all crews welcome in fact.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 3 October 2014 21:22 (eleven years ago)

I want an extended version of "Out of the Dark". I suppose I could always mess around with freeware audio editors again.

TTAGGGTTAGGG (Sanpaku), Friday, 3 October 2014 21:23 (eleven years ago)

The most implausible part of the Veronica Mars movie was that Twin Sister's "All Around and Away We Go" was presented as a hit for a Katy Perry-like pop star.

jaymc, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:45 (eleven years ago)

I'd seen this name on places like Pitchfork, but I had no idea Twin Sister had added "Mr" to the name. I just thought it was someone different.

This sounds totally unlike what they sounded like 3-4 years ago.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:49 (eleven years ago)

I think that's the reason for the change but i still don't like it, it feels like they had a messy car crash with Mr Mr.

Tim F, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:51 (eleven years ago)

THE MUSIC IS GREAT THOUGH.

Tim F, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:52 (eleven years ago)

Listening to the album now. I'm on board.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 October 2014 21:53 (eleven years ago)

Legal threats from another Twin Sister, “the self-proclaimed greatest Star Wars funk band,” who performed in full costume.

TTAGGGTTAGGG (Sanpaku), Friday, 3 October 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)

Out of the Dark is a bop. Wish it didn't end so abruptly.

I think their first album is underrated.

uxorious gazumping (monotony), Friday, 3 October 2014 22:08 (eleven years ago)

i also wish "out of the dark" were longer and i maybe wish "twelve angels" were shorter

best side one i've heard all year though

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 3 October 2014 23:19 (eleven years ago)

i love this album. some of it sounds like bjork doing linda difranco and sade covers.

max, Sunday, 5 October 2014 12:11 (eleven years ago)

This album is really something. Balearic/Dixon/Sade is so right, I can't believe nobody tried it before.

dow, Sunday, 19 October 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

Listening to album now on Spotify goddam---dream pop & bass? No lack of personality or atmosphere

dow, Monday, 20 October 2014 00:22 (eleven years ago)

2011 alb very good too so damn confident but no time for smug "Beep beep."

dow, Monday, 20 October 2014 00:56 (eleven years ago)

Loved their EPs in 2009-10 - think "All Around And Away We Go" was my favourite track by anyone that year - then found their first LP in 2011 to be a huge let-down, just a few highlights and "Saturday Sunday" was just terrible. Will try to check out their new stuff with an open mind.

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:45 (eleven years ago)

So good. One of my late discoveries (Thanks to Johnny Fever for having it in his albums of the year list) but already very high on my own list.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:49 (eleven years ago)

first four tracks completely devastate me at this point

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:54 (eleven years ago)

Yeah the first half is just gorgeous. The second half seems so unexpected after those songs but it somehow it really works as a whole album.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 01:58 (eleven years ago)

i like everything on it

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 02:03 (eleven years ago)

This LP is now my favourite this year, not a weak spot on it, glad they've stopped trying to be an indie band and embraced this strung-out 5am post-disco thing, her voice deserves it.

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 03:23 (eleven years ago)

i found this album very pleasant to listen to and every time it has gone straight in one ear and out the other

lex pretend, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 09:29 (eleven years ago)

Pretty sure I overlooked this on the basis of the terrible name too.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 January 2015 23:02 (ten years ago)

nearly overlooked it on the basis of 1) their name 2) the previous associations i had re: their sound 3) who was writing about them

Not the most active band though, eh?
What do they do in their non-MTS time that keeps them from releasing more fantastic music anyway?

mr.raffles, Thursday, 28 June 2018 03:38 (seven years ago)

Tops and Bottoms is the new single (probably won't work until it's Friday where you are). it doesn't blow me away like the other singles so far but it's still good. i'm also surprised that Power of Two and Echo Arms aren't on the album?

it's not like the last album wasn't incredibly great but this new material collectively seems like another huge leap forward, I don't think I've anticipated an album this much since Shaking The Habitual

boxedjoy, Friday, 19 October 2018 14:42 (seven years ago)

'Tops and Bottoms' is magic. Knowing the lyrics really opened it up for me. Consumerism, anxiety, the male gaze, superficiality, ego, etc...addressed with serious economy.
Or, I could be reading too much into it. heh

Either way, what a special vocalist/lyricist. Something that I'm liking more about these singles than the last album is how up front and idiosyncratic the vocal performances
are again.

Also, saw the first show of the tour last Thursday. If you can, go. Didn't realize how much I'd missed em!

||||||||, Friday, 26 October 2018 14:29 (seven years ago)

i've put Power of Two and Echo Arms in between Alien FM and Koh-I-Noor and it takes the album from a 9 to a 10

ufo, Friday, 26 October 2018 14:34 (seven years ago)

I also wish that they had done an extended Echo Arms instead of Power Of Two, although both feel like some lost Paradise Garage classic

boxedjoy, Friday, 26 October 2018 14:37 (seven years ago)

idk the album is perfectly wonderful without them, i’m fine with 1 awesome album and 1 awesome double-sided single

princess of hell (BradNelson), Friday, 26 October 2018 14:40 (seven years ago)

fred-a van vleet (voodoo chili), Friday, 26 October 2018 14:44 (seven years ago)

it just adds a little more of their dance side to it and sort of balances it out a bit better, the album feels a lot slower without them. it's great as it is but i definitely prefer my edit

ufo, Friday, 26 October 2018 14:47 (seven years ago)

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 1 November 2018 01:47 (seven years ago)

Saw them last night in Seattle and am still floating. They are so tight and dialed in with their sound. Stood next to the board and their sound guy does as much as anyone on stage, constantly finessing the mix and dubbing out the drums. Definitely felt like the last time I’ll see them in a small club.

Yelploaf, Sunday, 11 November 2018 16:10 (seven years ago)

but why do they have such a bad name so that I only bothered to click the thread now???

They were called Twin Sister, another act with the same name sued them, they had to take something else that was different but still recognisably the same band. They don't really like the name, I think.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Sunday, 11 November 2018 22:42 (seven years ago)

I did always wonder why they didn't choose a completely new name as they've changed direction drastically since those days and "Mr Twin Sister" is such a dreadful name, to the point where convincing people to listen to them is harder than it needs to be

boxedjoy, Sunday, 11 November 2018 22:46 (seven years ago)

they should have gone with tvvin sister imo

josh az (2011nostalgia), Monday, 12 November 2018 02:44 (seven years ago)

makes me think of Twisted Sister

I guess a lot of bands end up with a name they don't really like

anyway, thanks for bumping this thread so much that I had to take a look

niels, Monday, 12 November 2018 08:16 (seven years ago)

i think "bad" band names (cf. majical cloudz) are better than seamlessly competent/"normal" ones (cf. grizzly bear) ¯\_ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ_/¯

caulk the wagon and float it, Monday, 12 November 2018 21:31 (seven years ago)

i obviously can't speak to how the band feels about it but i think 'mr twin sister' foregrounds the genderfluid themes in their recent music so i appreciate it on that level!

caulk the wagon and float it, Monday, 12 November 2018 21:32 (seven years ago)

p.s. here's the track order i'm now listening to this in

keep on mixing
alien fm
power of two
koh-i-noor
buy to return
tops & bottoms
deseo
echo arms
taste in movies
jaipur
set me free

i just couldn't bear to keep listening to echo arms & power of two separately!

caulk the wagon and float it, Monday, 12 November 2018 21:34 (seven years ago)

Considering that they entertained names such as Snake Butt, Dolphin Knee, Fish Toe, Jelly Chin, and Blood Chugger. where they landed isn't so bad.

they did NOT consider any of those names did they ?!

||||||||, Monday, 12 November 2018 22:05 (seven years ago)

Hahaha, no. I was just making a corny joke about the divisiveness of their name. It's objectively awful but somehow perfect for the band they now are i.e. the best band going.

Yelploaf, Monday, 12 November 2018 22:21 (seven years ago)

despite not being totally sold on the new album yet, i went to their show last nite and it was fantastic

flopson, Monday, 12 November 2018 23:18 (seven years ago)

They were magical in SF. 'Tops and Bottoms' really clicked for me. The vocal distortion jumping jacks she would do are really effective live!

KevRus, Wednesday, 20 February 2019 21:50 (six years ago)

So I've been thinking about the early years when they were just called Twin Sister. This era gets imo unfairly neglected, probably because the only LP they put out then ("In Heaven") is easily the worst thing they've ever released. But! This was the time I first got into the group - I heard All Around And Away We Go at the end of 2010 and obsessed over them between then and the release of In Heaven the next year - they used to have everything free to download from their blog including heaps of demos and snippets, at one point they seemed to be putting something up there every day. The best of it was earth-shattering (I still consider All Around And Away We Go one of my favourite tracks of all time, perfect example of being utterly derivative and utterly transcendent at the same time), most was of a much lower quality though.

So I've sifted through these 80 or so tracks and ended up with mostly stuff from EPs and the LP, but I think it's a good introduction to the early days of the group. Love how they seem to be trying on completely different sounds with each track at first. Oh, and the two demos at the start can (maybe) be skipped if you want to get to the actual songs, but I wanted it to go in chronological order so there they stay.

It's in the form of a mix because I shouldn't put mp3s up here obvs, however if want to put it together yourself then the demos they are still easily findable online from the good ole mp3 blog era, and the other tracks are available for sale

Mix is here - https://www.mixcloud.com/centuries_of_sound/twin-sister-2009-2011/ - probably will need to rehost once mixcloud twigs what it is.

01 - October 23rd 2009 (Demo, 2009) - 0:00
02 - Ribbon Bow (Demo, 2009) - 2:19
03 - The Other Side of Your Face (Color Your Life, 2010) - 5:29
04 - Milk & Honey (Color Your Life, 2010) - 12:14
05 - All Around and Away We Go (Color Your Life, 2010) - 17:08
06 - Phenomenons (Color Your Life, 2010) - 21:29
07 - Lady Daydream (live on Big Ugly Yellow Couch, 2010) - 24:27
08 - Ginger (Vampires With Dreaming Kids, 2010) - 28:34
09 - Nectarine (Vampires With Dreaming Kids, 2010) - 32:28
10 - Meet the Frownies (Split Single with The Luyas, 2011) - 35:35
11 - Stop (In Heaven, 2011) - 39:36
12 - Bad Street (In Heaven, 2011) - 43:36
13 - Space Babe (In Heaven, 2011) - 48:14

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Wednesday, 20 February 2019 23:01 (six years ago)

@mfktz, is there a way to make that available in the US? Would love to dig into that era more. I personally love "In Heaven" but they've obviously taken leaps and bounds since then. Almost criminal how underrated this band is.

Ah, such a magical show last night. Been dying to see them since Color Your Life but it makes sense that only "All Around.." remains on the setlist. That sounded better than ever, somehow. There was a new song, confirmed they're still pushing forward :)

wish I had known, I'd have bought you a pint! I spent 9/10ths of the set unable to see anything, the choice to have a "stage" that's barely an inch higher than the crowd space means a 5ft5 wisp like me either needs to be down the front or resign themselves to the view of the back of somebody's head.

Mr Twin Sister at The David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, NYC
Free to enter until at capacity, Arrive at least 1/2 hour early for your best chance to get in!
Seating and entry are first-come, first-served; the line will form at the Atrium’s entrance on Broadway, between 62nd and 63rd Street.

Brooklyn-based indie pop band Mr Twin Sister have headlined sets at Elsewhere, Warsaw, and Bowery Ballroom. The group's Lincoln Center debut reimagines the space as an exclusive rock club, minus the cover. Mr Twin Sister's early EPs announced the band's signature brand of musically omnivorous dreamy disco, but they first gained international recognition when Kendrick Lamar sampled their single "Meet the Frownies" for his breakout hit "The Recipe." Four albums later, the quartet has established themselves as among the scene's most respected and influential institutions. Pitchfork said Mr Twin Sister's latest release, 2022's Upright and Even, "exists to be danced to... each song is self aware, mature and sexy." Bring a partner or find one at the Atrium for a night of ecstasy.
