EP "Mr Noah" out now, sounds great, so much fuller than Tomboy and more put together than person pitch...

I kept waiting for the song to blow up into some other part for a nice contrasting resolve. It never did. Fuck you, Panda Bear.

I have listened to "Mr Noah" way way too many times today. Always seems to end too quickly. I don't think I've ever gotten this hooked on one of his solo songs.

I have stopped in on that board various times over the years looking for infos and updates, etc. (especially recordings of new stuff that is being toured before the record comes out...) and the tenor of it is hilarious. I mean I guess every band has their cult but AC just seem like chilled out bros and their hardcore fans are the most painstaking, humorless people in the world.

i was on that board pretty frequently from 2005 to 2009, and in the years after MPP, the fan base completely changed - sooooooooooo many "chilled out bros" that are oddly humorless. the fans became way more invasive too after MPP blew up, as is expected i guess, but the coolest thing about that board was that the band actually posted on it regularly until 2008 or so when people started getting creepy. it's a shame because you could go on and ask about some super obscure b-side or radio session like breezeblock or the pumpkin trilogy and avey/geo/deakin/sometimes pandy would write long responses and share lots of info. it was really cool, but i guess that kind of thing can't be sustained once you reach a certain level and people are trying to figure out where your wedding is, or what your kids look like :\

i also have to keep reminding myself that lots of the posters on there rn are probably teenagers. lots of them are complaining about the record missing the intros/build-ups that he played live. i was confused because the AC pretty much always does that, especially on strawberry jam. like when i first heard the studio version of "chores" - then i remembered that a lot of these people don't remember SJ leaking three songs at a time over the summer of 2007. oi

AC is one of those bands i saw fairly early in their career and would have not guessed in a million years they would become as popular as they have

I'm listening to that Scientist Meets the Space Invaders record right now and it is really making my evening.

whoa cool! what was the lineup/setup? songs from spirit or danse manatee or totally unrecognizable?

my memories are dim. IIRC it was like two or three very long "songs," very loose & improvisational, built around kind of tribal-sounding rhythms. at the time one of the few reference points i had for it was a drum circle. i still think that's kind of apposite.

it was probably at their loosest and most "experimental", which may be why i was surprised to discover that they had become really "hot" a bunch of years later.

actual quotes from the ac board:

I wish crosswords was mixed a little differently, like with the "doo doo dee" noises louder. (like in the live rips)

nah but a lot of the vocal things annoy me as well. the low bits especially ('hey hey hey' on mr noah, 'has a' on boys latin). the tinny robotic backing vocal on principe reel almost ruins the song, and there's a bit i only just noticed on boys latin(?) where he caps off a verse or something with a random high note, and it sounds ridiculous.

the real tragedy here is that the hardcore fans dying to hear this have to sit through this awful quality leak for 2 months. the quality sucks, and that is everyone's first impression of the album. what a shame.

domino should release the digital files now, especially considering they fucked up the release.

I love the first three tracks of the LP. His vocals sound great and are in the forefront, where they should be, and there's attention paid to the drums, which I appreciate.

the first three tracks are probably my least favorite tbh. i love the middle stretch from "boys latin" -> "tropic of cancer"

Come To Your Senses is the best track here, but it took me some time to figure it out.
other highlights: Selfish Gene and Butcher Baker.

the weakest track is Pricipe Real imo.

Loving this, especially Come To Your Senses. I feel like I could potentially have evolving favorites on this record.

I keep waiting for him to do something different with his vocals. I loved him in earlier days Animal Collective, but now I find his voice to be intolerable.

To be fair, I've only listened to this through my computer speakers which sounds terrible.

This album is fucking rad. I never got into Tomboy -- would benefit from spending more time with it probably -- but this one, yes. Don't find it to be a "grower." The repetitiveness is so hypnotizing on first listen.

Whoa, this album is great!! I never got into Tomboy either but yeah like Treesh said this immediately engaging. I love the little chiptune sounds in "Mr. Noah" a LOT

It just occured to me like how much of a staple the really reverby vocals are, like of course it's one of his signature trademarks but I guess I'd just never thought through "oh wow he ALWAYS does this to his vocals and it would sound so radically different and weird and un-PB if he just sang normally w/o effects"

did he sing without effects on Young Prayer? it's been a long while since I listened to it but it seemed to be a more stripped down recording

To me the production is a huge disappointment, I have no idea what's happened to him in that sense. I'd never thought he could do production as uninteresting, plodding, lazy as this. droney over never changing tired drum loops, it's like he found a 4/4 beat, just looped it for the entire track, and sung over.. nothing really stuck in my head melodically. sounds like it should be more upbeat and uptempo but just isn't.

sequential circuits - tomboy outtake?

mr noah - tired of it after a few listen, horrible mixing on the dull drums

crossroads - plodding, but fairly good vocals

boys latin - initially interesting quickly tiresome and plodding bad mixing

come to your senses - album starts feeling repetitive at this point, nothing happening with production

tropic of cancer - deeply emotional, him at his very best.

lonely wanderer - eh. introspective feelings but doesn't stick with me.

principe real - this track couldve hit much harder and bouncier but seems weighed down by something. plodding again. needs help on his production.

selfish gene - arpeggiooooooooooo. first part of a fantastic end to a mediocre album. great phrasing and enunciation on his vocals and his vocals melody and lyrics finally really carry this track beyond it's uninspired production

acid wash - probably my favourite track. finally the tempo is right, production is great mirrors the maritime ctuhulu feel in the lyrics

listened to this album once and it did nothing for me, sadly. really like tomboy though.

that said, it was the same thing with Tomboy.
I appreciate them but not much more.

Tropic of Cancer is gorgeous

that marijuana song is so obvious yet so effective, he should just sing hazy over old loops.

pretty great, played it three times in a row. AC ep's are always so strong

still album of the year. conceptually interesting, fun to listen to, and moving. 0PN's garden of delete comes close but it's too brutal - PBVSGR and the two EPs go down like honey.

fb - can you tell me more about the concept and what makes it interesting? I feel a bit like I'm betraying my younger self by having cooled so much on AC-related music in recent years.
