The Small Faces - Autumn Stone

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:09 (ten years ago)

sorry that first one is so huge

J. Sam, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:14 (ten years ago)

That second Small Faces cover is better!

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:14 (ten years ago)

Granted, the first one isn't great.

But the album is not Bob Seger does Kiss...

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:17 (ten years ago)

Skylarking
(best not to look it up)

Abstinence Hawk (frogbs), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:18 (ten years ago)

With Moon & Antarctica it's like cheesy but lovable Hipgnosis-core vs. bland rorschach photoshoppery.

J. Sam, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:31 (ten years ago)

Skylarking

iirc that reissue cover is the image they originally wanted to use in 1986, but the record company said no way.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:32 (ten years ago)

I prefer the second al stewart cover

akm, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:38 (ten years ago)

Air by Air (Pete Namlook & Dr. Atmo) is a classic case, I think... Here's the original cover, when it was released by FAX:
http://www.2350.org/pk54/artwork.jpg

And here's what it looked like when reissued by Rising High:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:44 (ten years ago)

Dreamfish, another Namlook project on FAX didn't get much better treatment when reissued by Rising High...

The original cover:

The Rising High cover:

Though a later reissue on Ambient World (FAX's reissue sublabel) actually had a pretty cool cover:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:49 (ten years ago)

That BT Express one: They were still switching cover art to something "less black", in 1974 (or whenever) ?

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:52 (ten years ago)

Had to check the dates - the second one is a CD reissue from 2004!

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:55 (ten years ago)

I prefer the second al stewart cover

that's closer to the original

Lee626, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:57 (ten years ago)

A lot of budget fly-by-night label reissues barely have access to master tapes, much less original art, so they hack some shit out in Photoshop like that B.T. Express cover.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 14:59 (ten years ago)

Funny, I was just thinking about starting a thread about reissues where the reissuing label fucks up the original cover with some kind of reissue frame/logo dealy, but didn't think it was worth its own thread.

For example, I was always a little annoyed by those Columbia/CBS Jazz Masterpieces CD covers:

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_O0wk-qJQm6U/S_rbhbSA5-I/AAAAAAAABYo/saakKKk75Ho/s320/miles+davis.jpg

http://jazzbluesclub.com/uploads/posts/thumbs/1182585926_cover__gerry_mulligan_what.jpg

Could be worse, but needlessly gunks up the design. Especially that generic clip-art looking JAZZ INSTRUMENTS logo that looks like it should be on the door of a tourist trap designed to be overflow from Preservation Hall

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 15:03 (ten years ago)

This one also has an alternate image/design, which is inexplicable and inexcusable

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 15:07 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I've always disliked the Columbia Jazz Masterpieces framing too, and sometimes they also managed to screw the colours of the original cover:

Tuomas, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 15:09 (ten years ago)

I first encountered a lot of Miles albums in their CBS Jazz Masterpieces iterations, so I have a weird nostalgic fondness for those covers even though they're objectively shitty.

J. Sam, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:04 (ten years ago)

Yeahh...

But then agaim, they are basically reiterating: This is not the album, this is a CD copy of the album.

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:04 (ten years ago)

there are some vinyl reissues of miles albums that have the same shitty border

marcos, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:08 (ten years ago)

"This is not the album, this is not a CD copy of the album. This is an LP made from the CD remaster, if you are lucky"

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:10 (ten years ago)

the album cover they used for the miles ahead reisssue wasn't the original one anyway. this was:

http://www.coverdude.com/covers/miles-davis-miles-ahead-1957-inside-cover-21501.jpg

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:26 (ten years ago)

miles wasn't too keen on that though iirc

john wahey (NickB), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:27 (ten years ago)

oh yeah forgot about that. I actually like the reissue cover better, other than the framing

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:27 (ten years ago)

lol I can kind of imagine Miles going off on that cover

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:27 (ten years ago)

In case anyone says "White Light/ White Heat", I've always liked the alternate cover.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:33 (ten years ago)

Album cover

Miles reportedly was unhappy about the album's original cover, which featured a photograph of a young white woman and child aboard a sailboat. He made his displeasure known to Columbia executive George Avakian, asking, "Why'd you put that white bitch on there?"[10] Avakian later stated that the question was made in jest. For later releases of the record, however, the original cover-photo has been substituted by a photograph of Miles Davis.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 17:33 (ten years ago)

I hope they at least kept the white kid and the sailboat lol

to be fair to Bell Records, they might not have had the art for the original album at that time. i think al green put that album out himself originally? but still, what the hell is that cover? really bad whatever it is.

scott seward, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:16 (ten years ago)

the border thing and extra writing can really drive you nuts. it's always ugly. a sticker on the cd will do...

This one is kind of interesting because the original cover with the girl was restored on the original CD edition back in the 80s, but when the album was remastered the original cover appeared only on the now-OOP deluxe edition while the band photo cover appeared on the more common single-disc edition (which doesn't include the OG art at all in it's package).

Don A Henley And Get Over It (C. Grisso/McCain), Tuesday, 18 November 2014 21:55 (ten years ago)

Somebody used the Japan/European sleeve of Agharta as a major influence on their artwork for one panel of an ABC Warriors story in 2000AD I remember noting at the time.

Also I had a really naff glossy sleeve picture on the vinyl copy of The Zombies Odessey & Oracle I picked up in the early/mid 80s. Can't really remember what it looked like beyond it having a blue sleeve and a totally different picture

Stevolende, Tuesday, 18 November 2014 22:06 (ten years ago)

When the first CSN was reissued last, for some reason they photoshopped Dallas Taylor off the back cover. I can't find the new one online, but basically they clonestamped the window pattern over where he was behind the door.

almost of of the Felt CD reissues had their cover altered in some way, I think this is good thing though, if it's done well- a design that works well at 12" record sleeve size is not necessarily going to work at CD sleeve size- it always bugged me that on the CD version of Get Happy they didn't size up the coffee mug stain to the correct dimensions

xpost to be fair (re: the Can Anthology), it maybe gave too much prominence to Malcolm Mooney (who was the first and final singer, the original issue being when Can were just about still going), over Damo Suzuki (more albums), and more that the four guys were the mainstays.

not heard of name changes before !

just remembered re cover changes.

a large chunk of the on-u sound catalogue was reissued by EFA back in the late 90s.

the reissues overimposed the original image with a strange coloured M thing.

example :

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-front.jpg

http://www.skysaw.org/onu/images/imagebank/sp-onulp11-mr-front.jpg

each release had a different colour variation.

not totally offensive, but i would have preferred the original image.

I think they reissued Days In Europa on CD with the original 'Berlin Olympics' sleeve at some point?

my MFP cassette version of relics was different to all of these !

was similar to the b-n-w version, but seem to recall it had some pink on it (possibly the bands name in pink - doh !)

I think that was a thing were some versions had a more elaborate design where the little slats were actually hole cut into the outer sleeve, showing the different coloured inner sleeve below, and some were more basic, cheaper versions?

WAs that Christine Perfect reissue with the fake xerox sleeve an attempt to make her seem contemporary in post-punk late 70s or something?

Stevolende, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 12:03 (ten years ago)

the orange one is the german version, the b&w ziggy one is the reissue

john wahey (NickB), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 13:55 (ten years ago)

I have always preferred the black and white Ziggy one anyway. Did not know about the cartoon cover! Would be cool if the rest of the world had cartoon covers for all of the albums. Would like to see Low.

Eyeball Kicks, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 14:00 (ten years ago)

Yeah the Christine Perfect encapsulates the major label approach to repackaging something- Christine in the Hippy/Huey Newton Poster chair is passe, but if we posterize the photo with blobs of color, we can make it look like a Wharhol commission... very now! And while we're at it, lets rub some Letraset on the thing, but I'm running short on "C" so I'll take some from another sheet. Ready for 1982, to be put on display near to the Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks solo records.

The Hendrix ones are really weird, because it's not like his reputation has slipped, and the Axis and Ladyland covers were iconic.

They didn't mess with the sequence on Axis or Ladyland, but I think AYE might've been futzed with to reflect the UK running order. It also had a slew of bonus tracks.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 19 November 2014 14:33 (ten years ago)

almost of of the Felt CD reissues had their cover altered in some way

when all their albums were first properly reissued on cd in the 90s lawrence decided they should all have "generic" covers:

What was the actual story re: the puppets on "Band of Gypsies"?

A lot of "oh, John Peel / friends of Brian objected" but nobody seems to know.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 15:11 (ten years ago)

the original 1986 version of Let the Snakes Crinkle Their Heads to Death by Felt looked like this. the picture was cropped for the 2003 CD reissue

the image had been cropped much earlier than than on every reissue of the album. only the first vinyl pressing had the original cover. it seems lawrence regretted the photo almost instantly.

sleepingsignal, Wednesday, 19 November 2014 15:14 (ten years ago)

The reminds me of a real fucking head-scratcher:
http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-QHpzAqam3RQ/UZVcXiDv-DI/AAAAAAAAAOU/t8caBg_w_zc/s1600/albert-ayler-in-greenwich-vill-459355.jpghttp://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41Y42KD5AFL.jpg

Somehow, the latter issue (1998) looks more embarrassingly dated than the original (1968) issue.

Basically, when the first version was issued, the Brigit Riley sleeve was a cheap option.

By the time the album was reissued, the 'option' had lased and Brigit Riley was now an expensive artist and they couldn't afford it anymore.

that pick a dub reissue cover is another example of "more dated than the original" imo

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:29 (ten years ago)

I kind of like the Heart of the Congos cover though, honestly never knew it wasn't the original or gave it much thought, and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

my jaw left (Hurting 2), Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:30 (ten years ago)

..and the original is kind of a crappy photo.

which epitomises the whole albums groove perfectly as opposed to a revised 90s art house re-jig.

mark e, Thursday, 20 November 2014 22:47 (ten years ago)

Yeah I mean, those B&F covers are pretty great! They looked good at the time and still hold up pretty well, but in the long run they're going to end up looking really dated to a particular place and time that has nothing to do with the actual music. They probably helped sell a lot of CDs though.

I'm not sure if the red and green pick a dub cover is original. The little inset version on the b&f cover is the black and white version, so maybe that came first?

wk, Thursday, 20 November 2014 23:13 (ten years ago)

This isn't godawful and it's technically not even a reissue (it's just the Spanish version of the cover released at the same time as the rest of the world got the zipper cover). But anyone who hasn't seen it before should.
