a lot of 'fun singles artists' type rappers have made full-length albums/mixtapes i enjoy but Migos mixtapes just become an endurance trial for me really quickly. especially the new one. that opening track at the top of the thread is 6 minutes for some reason, and it's like 8 tracks in before you get to anything that even resembles the kind of songs they're famous for.

I made a rough draft of a checklist of characteristics the Thelonious Monk of rap would have:

1. Other rappers and critics think they can't rap, but they're actually very technically gifted. Their early works attest to the fact that they can rap straight.

2. Has a hard-to-detect sense of irony in the formal aspects of their performance rather than simply in the text of their lyrics.

3. Subverts rhythm and flow in off-kilter, sometimes subtle ways.

4. Melodically inventive.

5. A handful of well-regarded verses and hooks are "borrowed" from others or otherwise have a murky provenance.

I'm open to revisions and additions.

Good points although I would disregard all the bit about lyrics as theyre the least important part of rapping and point 1 i disagree with as Monk wasn't technically gifted and that tells you all you need to know about the standard accepted qualia and of techincal gifts and the worth they have

Offset said. "They're legends, but we're legends too now. Quavo was just saying he wanted to meet Paul McCartney, so nothing against them. But they saying we better, so it is what it is."

I don't get these dudes. I couldn't even finish listening to "Versace". I'm all for lyrical minimalism but when they do spit a line it just doesn't connect with me. It seems the young kids of today are into some seriously questionable stuff. Like Drake and J. Cole. To me it is corny and lightweight. But these are the artists capitalizing financially on the styles laid down by the true groundbreaker MC's. And these Migos guys jacked both Mac Dre and Ol' Dirty's fashion steaze. That's ok. It just ain't nothing new. I worry about this generation of kids. I am getting older but the stuff they like pretty much suuuckz. 11 million plus views for"Versace". Who the heck finds that song inspirational or groundbreaking? Riff Raff owns the use of "Versace" as an adjective, btw.

yeah this thread title is just . . . *sighs*

like something can be good without needing to be the X of Y, right?

I don't want to overstate things or speculate too much about motivations, but talking about rap in this way almost feels like some kind of "respectability politics", ya know? Do Migos need to be brought "up" from one level to another?

You can plug anything into this schema. Like so:

Sunn O))) are the Mark Rothko of metal
Autechre are the Agnes Martin of electro
Tinashe is the Paul Gaugin of R n B
Ashtray Navigations are the Wassily Kandinsky of guitar noise

etc.

I get that that can be done well or poorly, but it's resting on shaky ground- is my Rothko your Rothko? Do you mean "bright" or "simple" or "suicidal" or "focused" or "minimal" and so on.

I've listened to most of their tapes and it has nothing to do with comparison to anything they've done in the past, it's just a really fun hooky song! I don't see what's so hard to understand about that.

t shirt is a cool song and it might ride out the bad and boujee popularity wave but if you stack it up next to fight night, handsome & wealthy, hannah montana, bad and boujee etc i also don't hear it as a hit in those terms

T-Shirt is incredibly hooky - the kindof song where you'll have the whole club rapping along to every word. It's not very radio ready but then how much does radio matter these days anyway?

lex pretend, Friday, 3 February 2017 18:28 (eight years ago)

I'm not saying you shouldn't be upset or offended!

I'm saying you shouldn't expect other people to immediately dismiss or decry Migos even if you choose to.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 3 February 2017 18:43 (eight years ago)

And it's also like one of about 50 problematic things about the Migos

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 3 February 2017 18:49 (eight years ago)

it's a shitty lyric, yes.

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Friday, 3 February 2017 18:51 (eight years ago)

given how many music journalists' brand is to be WOKE, yes I absolutely fucking expect it! Transpose your terrible argument to any of the social justice blow-ups in the past few years and think about how ppl would react if you said that about Iggy Azalea or whomever. Just bc other people don't get this slur directed at them means they can handwave it away?

And don't do that thing of claiming the POC is calling for extreme measures rather than just an acknowledgement. I like the album a lot, aside from that extremely souring line. I'm not going to ~decry them. But you doubling down on your right to dismiss this slur as unimportant is probably more offensive than them using it in the first place, bc it just exposes how little you give a shit about anti-Asian racism.

lex pretend, Friday, 3 February 2017 18:54 (eight years ago)

Ok, we're actually in agreement because, sure, yes, it is hypocritical that the new breed of "woke music journalism" isn't picking up on this the same way that they would Rick Ross' "UOENO" verse or Drake's misogyny or w.e. But I think my record stands that most of those articles are kind of dumb because gangsta rap, from its beginning with Schoolly D, is a license for people who have been given no voice in America to express themselves, even if and often BECAUSE it means saying crazy/foul/problematic shit.

I mean, Migos talk about stealing girls, selling coke, selling fucking heroin, carrying guns, fucking "thots," giving coke to models.

It's blown-out, cartoonish, offensive, deviant. They're not trying to be "good people" on record

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 3 February 2017 19:12 (eight years ago)

Thanks for whineysplaining a genre I've been into for half my life?

Obvious racial slurs make for bad art regardless of "problematic" in 2017. I let Jay-Z saying "faggot" slide in my favourite song by him in a way I wouldn't for any rapper now.

But my principal beef was indeed with Woke Music Journalists being v quiet on this.

Carrie Battan in the new yorker disagreeing with deej on the T-Shirt debate:

The follow-up to “Bad and Boujee” is a single called “T Shirt,” another piece of drug slang. On the hook, Quavo offers reassurance that the Migos haven’t wavered from their initial premise. “Seventeen-five, same color T-shirt,” he says coolly, talking about buying a kilogram of cocaine. The song is full of esoteric references and off-kilter improvising. “Real mob ties—mob / Real frog eyes—frog / Real whole pies—whoa / All time high—high,” he raps. It creeps along stealthily, Quavo singing behind a fog of reverb. There’s something eerie and sphinxlike about it. In other words, it’s a hit. ♦
