This is happening!

The rules/guidelines:

- This is a tracks-only poll

- Each person can nominate up to 10 tracks.

- I'm not going to impose any constraints on what is eligible but let's try to stick to what is loosely described in the "Italo disco" Wikipedia article:

"Spin It" is another anomaly, but I think it fits here... Apparently it was written and produced by a studio technician named Doug Groover from Houston, who never released another record, and who died of multiple sclerosis in 1994. Anyway, in my opinion the relentless synth arpeggios and the whole Euro feel of the tune definitely make it Italo, and you could even say the sped-up vocals (presumably by Groover himself, I've always thought he used that technique because he didn't have a female singer for the track) presage helium house...

WTF this tune, how did I not know this?

I have to confess I haven't got a clue what Italo actually is but I love Tantra's "Hills of Katmandu" and Azoto's "Exalt-Exalt", which have both been nommed here. If "Mechanical Dream" by GG Tonet and "Rise" by Automat count as Italo then I'm 2/5 of the way towards taking part in this crazy thing!

I wouldn't generally think of Tantra or G.G. Tonet as Italo but I suppose at least they're more Italian than Gino Soccio ;-)

Yeah that was me, I dunno, while I wouldn't want to see, say, 'dancer' here I just feel 'remember' sounds italo through and through. Plus his heritage is Italian obv.

I guess Tantra is more lush and orchesthrated than your stereotypical Italo, but it's still synth-driven, non-funky disco with impersonal female vocals, that's Italo enough for me. "Hills of Katmandu" is definitely gonna be in my top 3.

i never realized Lime was from Canada. I always assumed they were European bc is Summer Lovers.

Nobody's nominated it (it's overplayed and has already received enough votes in the disco poll anyway) but I Feel Love is of course 100% Italo.

Lime, Tapps, and Trans-X were all Canadian. I'd consider them all more Hi-NRG anyway.

There was definitely a scene going on in Canada that was, if not influenced by Italo and Eurodisco, certainly going into the same direction... Lime, Gino Soccio, Kebekelektrik, Kat Mandu, Immortals, Trans-X, etc, none of this stuff would sound weird if played back to back with "proper" Italo.

There has never been a convincing distinction between Canadian Disco, Discofox, early Hi-NRG and Italo Disco. The terms are used pretty much interchangeably depending on where you are.

Yeah perhaps not, Just always thought of them that way. Cerrone especially I thought was Italian till I was suprised that no one had nommed him yet and looked it up.

I guess it's a good idea to exclude the "proto" stuff that already had a good showing in the ILM oldschool Disco poll (for which Italo was out-of-scope), otherwise we'd get too much overlap, see also "I Feel Love".

A couple of Laserdance jams have been nominated already, but I'm gonna nominate "Cosmo Tron," which I think is massive. Also going to nominate the first Koto single, "Chinese Revenge" (original version), which might not be disco but is a very pretty record.

I don't think I understand the difference between Hi-NRG and Italo Disco, what are are the dividing lines?

I'm not an expert on either, but the hi-NRG that I've heard tends to be a bit faster and it usually has more soul/gospel style vocals, whereas Italo is a bit slower and has less melismatic/showy, more pop style singing. Though it's the early/proto hi-NRG, like Patrick Cowley's productions, aren't really that different from Italo of the era.

ha, I asked that mainly to sound out whether or not Patrick Cowley's Mind Warp would be eligible, I first heard that on a what was described as an italo-disco playlist, but wasn't sure if it's more hi-NRG or space-disco or something else

I think of hi-NRG as stuff that sounds like dead or alive - "you spin me right round", more intense and slamming, much less funkiness.

I've always thought of Hi-NRG as more dance- less song-oriented than Italo. Like, mostly instrumental tracks they used to played at clubs? I certainly wasn't going to any clubs at the time, but I remember a radio station that used to play Hi-NRG and it was mostly long instrumental tracks.

I have sort of a dilemma: even though I discouraged people from nominated UK synth pop, I feel like there are a couple of Pet Shop Boys tracks (namely, "In the night" and "Paninaro") that would fit perfectly. Now my question is: have people been avoiding nominating things from the UK on the basis of eligibility? Do people agree with me on those two tracks? I don't want to nominate them and then being accused of breaking my own "rule".

Atrocious accents and mangled English lyrics are a key ingredient of Italo.

The first version of PSB's "West End Girls" (the Bobby Orlando mix, not the later hit version) sounds pretty Italo to me as well.

I always forget "Take a Chance" is a cover because it's perfect, and I heard it before the original, which is... merely quite good.

List doesn't include the Spices and Pepper Men cover (1982) of the Peppers' "Pepper Box" (1974), but then it is apparently French and everything I've clicked on on the discogs list is Italian, so maybe that's why not

Looking through that list of covers and quite a few are terrible, but A.P.O.'s cover of "O Superman" is amazing.

Pepper Box just uses elements rather than being an outright cover though? Belter tune.
