There's Something Going On Right Now: The ILM ITALO poll (Nominations thread)

Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed

This is happening!

The rules/guidelines:

- This is a tracks-only poll

- Each person can nominate up to 10 tracks.

- I'm not going to impose any constraints on what is eligible but let's try to stick to what is loosely described in the "Italo disco" Wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italo_disco,

and to artists from (or similar to) the "Notable artists" list. That being said, I'd discourage people from nominating:
-UK-based synth-pop
-Italo house
-Music from Italy not usually categorised as 'Italo'.

- Nominations close/Voting opens on Wednesday, December 10 (I'll create a separate voting thread then).

I'ma throw this in here then:

December 10, 2014, obviously.

daavid, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 19:29 (ten years ago)

Also let's please keep the youtubes to a minimum :)

daavid, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 19:30 (ten years ago)

Josh, also, as you can see, you don't have to submit all your nominees in a single post, as long as you keep track that your list doesn't exceed the maximum of 10 nominations per person.

emil.y, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 22:39 (ten years ago)

I already nominated BWH Stop, so you're still on 3 Capitaine Jay Vee xp

Okay, here's my final two nominations:

Tantra - Macumba Suite
Sunbelt - Spin It

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 07:52 (ten years ago)

"Spin It" is another anomaly, but I think it fits here... Apparently it was written and produced by a studio technician named Doug Groover from Houston, who never released another record, and who died of multiple sclerosis in 1994. Anyway, in my opinion the relentless synth arpeggios and the whole Euro feel of the tune definitely make it Italo, and you could even say the sped-up vocals (presumably by Groover himself, I've always thought he used that technique because he didn't have a female singer for the track) presage helium house...

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 07:58 (ten years ago)

If we're including modern revival / continuation stuff like Sally Shapiro (which i think we should) then:

Natali - Vot Kak

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 27 November 2014 08:16 (ten years ago)

Big Ben Tribe - Tarzan Loves the Summer Nights
Gazebo - Love in Your Eyes
Kano - Another Life

OK then, I forgot this one anyway:
Diux - Comet
Sally Shapiro - He Keeps Me Alive

This is great of course, but do we include retro-Italo, or only the real deal from the 80s?

Siegbran, Thursday, 27 November 2014 09:43 (ten years ago)

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 10:14 (ten years ago)

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:49 (ten years ago)

i would have loved to include a bit of Ze Records, Laid Back and Flash & the Pan stuff as I feel like they're spiritually and temporarily in keeping with this kind of music, but none of it is strictly Italian or Italo, so I won't.

Piss-Up Artist (dog latin), Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:49 (ten years ago)

I thought of nominating Sandra too, but I already had too many poppy tunes.

I have a recording of a two hour Italo mix I did back in the 90s in my DJing days with mostly nominated tracks laying around somewhere on tape, I'll see if I can clean it up a bit in Ableton and put it up on Soundcloud or something.

Siegbran, Thursday, 27 November 2014 12:17 (ten years ago)

Interesting, I'd never thought of that Sandra tune as Italo, but I guess it kinda is.

Wristy Hurlington (ShariVari), Thursday, 27 November 2014 15:33 (ten years ago)

The problem this poll is posing to me is that the Italo songs I like best are the more electro tracks with maybe a bit of weirdness thrown in, but the song titles I remember the most are the most novelty-pop tracks. Some of which are amazing, obviously.

emil.y, Thursday, 27 November 2014 15:35 (ten years ago)

I wasn't going to vote for retro stuff, I think setting a cutoff year for the ILM Disco poll was a good idea, prevented people shoving in Daft Punk, Sophie Ellis Bextor etc. I know there's hundreds of fantastic retro-Italo tracks, but they're not really, you know...the real deal.

I have to confess I haven't got a clue what Italo actually is but I love Tantra's "Hills of Katmandu" and Azoto's "Exalt-Exalt", which have both been nommed here. If "Mechanical Dream" by GG Tonet and "Rise" by Automat count as Italo then I'm 2/5 of the way towards taking part in this crazy thing!

Letsby Avenue (Tom D.), Friday, 28 November 2014 13:40 (ten years ago)

I wouldn't generally think of Tantra or G.G. Tonet as Italo but I suppose at least they're more Italian than Gino Soccio ;-)

Not playing genre Police though.

Noel Emits, Friday, 28 November 2014 15:33 (ten years ago)

Yeah that was me, I dunno, while I wouldn't want to see, say, 'dancer' here I just feel 'remember' sounds italo through and through. Plus his heritage is Italian obv.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 28 November 2014 16:26 (ten years ago)

I guess Tantra is more lush and orchesthrated than your stereotypical Italo, but it's still synth-driven, non-funky disco with impersonal female vocals, that's Italo enough for me. "Hills of Katmandu" is definitely gonna be in my top 3.

Tuomas, Friday, 28 November 2014 19:12 (ten years ago)

i never realized Lime was from Canada. I always assumed they were European bc is Summer Lovers.

✓ out this insane nakh yall (gr8080), Friday, 28 November 2014 20:26 (ten years ago)

Nobody's nominated it (it's overplayed and has already received enough votes in the disco poll anyway) but I Feel Love is of course 100% Italo.

Siegbran, Friday, 28 November 2014 21:04 (ten years ago)

Lime, Tapps, and Trans-X were all Canadian. I'd consider them all more Hi-NRG anyway.

naus, Friday, 28 November 2014 21:53 (ten years ago)

There was definitely a scene going on in Canada that was, if not influenced by Italo and Eurodisco, certainly going into the same direction... Lime, Gino Soccio, Kebekelektrik, Kat Mandu, Immortals, Trans-X, etc, none of this stuff would sound weird if played back to back with "proper" Italo.

Tuomas, Friday, 28 November 2014 22:18 (ten years ago)

There has never been a convincing distinction between Canadian Disco, Discofox, early Hi-NRG and Italo Disco. The terms are used pretty much interchangeably depending on where you are.

How about a couple French tracks which IMO are totally totally italo or proto italo in spirit

Cerrone - supernature
Space - magic fly
Droids - the force

See, I would vote for all three of those songs in a heartbeat, but I'm not sure if they should count?

Yeah perhaps not, Just always thought of them that way. Cerrone especially I thought was Italian till I was suprised that no one had nommed him yet and looked it up.

dsb, Saturday, 29 November 2014 15:46 (ten years ago)

I guess it's a good idea to exclude the "proto" stuff that already had a good showing in the ILM oldschool Disco poll (for which Italo was out-of-scope), otherwise we'd get too much overlap, see also "I Feel Love".

Siegbran, Saturday, 29 November 2014 16:29 (ten years ago)

A couple of Laserdance jams have been nominated already, but I'm gonna nominate "Cosmo Tron," which I think is massive. Also going to nominate the first Koto single, "Chinese Revenge" (original version), which might not be disco but is a very pretty record.

I don't think I understand the difference between Hi-NRG and Italo Disco, what are are the dividing lines?

soref, Sunday, 30 November 2014 20:38 (ten years ago)

I'm not an expert on either, but the hi-NRG that I've heard tends to be a bit faster and it usually has more soul/gospel style vocals, whereas Italo is a bit slower and has less melismatic/showy, more pop style singing. Though it's the early/proto hi-NRG, like Patrick Cowley's productions, aren't really that different from Italo of the era.

Tuomas, Sunday, 30 November 2014 20:47 (ten years ago)

ha, I asked that mainly to sound out whether or not Patrick Cowley's Mind Warp would be eligible, I first heard that on a what was described as an italo-disco playlist, but wasn't sure if it's more hi-NRG or space-disco or something else

soref, Sunday, 30 November 2014 20:52 (ten years ago)

I think of hi-NRG as stuff that sounds like dead or alive - "you spin me right round", more intense and slamming, much less funkiness.

brimstead, Sunday, 30 November 2014 21:12 (ten years ago)

I've always thought of Hi-NRG as more dance- less song-oriented than Italo. Like, mostly instrumental tracks they used to played at clubs? I certainly wasn't going to any clubs at the time, but I remember a radio station that used to play Hi-NRG and it was mostly long instrumental tracks.

Oh blimey, glad this was bumped as I almost forgot about it. Must cross reference my list with what's on here and check what I need to nominate.

emil.y, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 22:12 (ten years ago)

I agree with Gr8080, I thought about nomming "Precious Little Diamond", but it doesn't feel Italo enough for me. Though I'm not really sure what genre it belongs to, it's kind of a unique tune.

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 December 2014 07:20 (ten years ago)

Siegbran, that's a good list. I'll probably choose my last two noms from it.

daavid, Thursday, 4 December 2014 18:05 (ten years ago)

anyone itt unfamiliar with "precious little diamond" needs to amend that immediately

gr8080, Thursday, 4 December 2014 18:06 (ten years ago)

I have sort of a dilemma: even though I discouraged people from nominated UK synth pop, I feel like there are a couple of Pet Shop Boys tracks (namely, "In the night" and "Paninaro") that would fit perfectly. Now my question is: have people been avoiding nominating things from the UK on the basis of eligibility? Do people agree with me on those two tracks? I don't want to nominate them and then being accused of breaking my own "rule".

Atrocious accents and mangled English lyrics are a key ingredient of Italo.

Siegbran, Thursday, 4 December 2014 20:07 (ten years ago)

The first version of PSB's "West End Girls" (the Bobby Orlando mix, not the later hit version) sounds pretty Italo to me as well.

Tuomas, Thursday, 4 December 2014 21:29 (ten years ago)

be careful with the British stuff, I don't think anybody wants blue Monday to win this poll

brimstead, Thursday, 4 December 2014 21:54 (ten years ago)

If UK Synth Pop isn't totally off the table I'd be of a mind to nom Night Moves.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 4 December 2014 22:40 (ten years ago)

i say no to UK stuff, as i'm already torn on my noms list - so much great true school italo to nom (incl. some stuff discovered above e.g. in Siegbran's overflow), but some great borderline cases that would be dope to rep, e.g. Lime - Babe, We’re Gonna Love Tonite (probably technically ESL!)

spacemindy, Thursday, 4 December 2014 22:47 (ten years ago)

Neon – My Blues Is You
Kano – I Need Love
Via Verdi – Diamond (also released under the name P4F)
Lama – Love on the Rocks
Future State – Future State
Xalan – I Only Move For Money/Solo Me Muevo Por Dinero
Say When! – Save Me
Raggio Di Luna – Comanchero (also released as Moon Ray)
Ivan – Fotonovela
Fellini – Passenger (great new discovery, thanks Siegbran!)

spacemindy, Thursday, 4 December 2014 22:47 (ten years ago)

I've been waiting for this poll forever, and then it turns out I missed the start of it! Best genre ever?

An amusing side poll would italo covers of pop songs. You wouldn't think there would be a market for Italo versions of "Owner Of Lonely Heart," "Shine On You Crazy Diamond," "Superstition," "Stand Back" (which I like better than Stevie Nicks' version,) "TSOP," "Pillow Talk," but they're out there.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 5 December 2014 01:40 (ten years ago)

Living In The Shuttle is so great, someone has to nominate it! I will vote for it for sure.

I nominated the synth-crazy, gender-flipped (sung by a woman, the lyrics are about a man) version of "Under My Thumb", which I think is awesome! Certainly more tolerable than the original, since its sexism is reversed.

I shall have to listen to that Raffaella Carra song, as I absolutely adore 'Rumore', but while it is both Italian and disco, it doesn't count for "Italo disco" in my eyes. (It's here if anyone wants to enjoy its delights anyway.)

emil.y, Tuesday, 9 December 2014 11:29 (ten years ago)

Also, I think most of my nominations have been nominated, except for one, which I'm sure is widely thought of as Italo disco even though the singer isn't Italian, but the fact that such a banger hasn't been nominated makes me doubt myself... Ah well,

Dee D. Jackson - Automatic Lover

Hugh Bullen - Alisand
Jo Squillo Eletrix - Avventurieri ‎

I wonder, can a vote for a song include both the vocal and instrumental versions? I feel there is usually a consensus on which side people like, but often times I like the less played side.

Thread needs more Kano and Klein & MBO. The first Kano LP and the Klein & MBO LP are my votes for the best Italo albums.

Here's a cool thread for reference:
Italo in languages other than English

I posted Midnight Moscow - Tovarish Gorbachev at the end of it, which still makes me so giddy. It's faux opera-italo sung in fake Russian.

How many serious vocal italo revival groups are there? I can only think of Sally Shapiro, Italove, and Cloetta Paris off the top of my head.

daavid, Thursday, 11 December 2014 04:03 (ten years ago)

That's an awesome list! Bit light on Fred Ventura related stuff though, may have to rectify that.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 11 December 2014 04:50 (ten years ago)

Does Desireless - Voyage Voyage qualify as Italo?

Siegbran, Thursday, 11 December 2014 07:33 (ten years ago)

Ooh, I'd definitely vote for that!

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:03 (ten years ago)

Three more...

Koto - Dragon's Legend
Baby's Gang - America
Max Him - Lady Fantasy

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:08 (ten years ago)

Here are my last three noms:

Automat - Automat
Erotic Drum Band - Horn-y
Kat Mandu - Hooked on Voices

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:09 (ten years ago)

Lime - Guilty

mike t-diva, Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:11 (ten years ago)

On the nomination master list, I noticed this:

Hipnosis - Pulstar

Hypnosis - End Title (Blade Runner Theme)

These are by the same band (the two tunes are the A and B side of the same single), and I think the proper spelling should be "Hipnosis", with an "i". (I have a CD single version of this where the band name is spelled "Hypnosis", but apparently the original 12" says Hipnosis.)

Tuomas, Thursday, 11 December 2014 09:16 (ten years ago)

Bonus 3/3:

Ago - For You
Alter Ego - Just Like a Star
Fancy - Lady of Ice

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:04 (ten years ago)

Alexander robotnik- dance boy dance
Thai break - flowers in the rain.

That's my bonus 3 as I also nommed boytronic- bryllyant after my initial 10.

ewar woowar (or something), Thursday, 11 December 2014 12:15 (ten years ago)

Thanks, Tuomas. I'll change the spelling.

daavid, Thursday, 11 December 2014 17:24 (ten years ago)

Torrevado - Living In The Shuttle
Lime – Babe, We’re Gonna Love Tonite

2/3

spacemindy, Thursday, 11 December 2014 20:36 (ten years ago)

Ninja - Bye Bye
Anneclaire ‎– I Want
Tom Hooker - Real Men

3/3

Eine Feine (soref), Thursday, 11 December 2014 22:23 (ten years ago)

i really like the idea of a "[s]best[s] [s]worst[s] most notable covers" sub-poll

― gr8080, Tuesday, December 9, 2014 7:59 PM (2 days ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

this seems like an excellent idea!

Eine Feine (soref), Thursday, 11 December 2014 22:44 (ten years ago)

My three bonus picks:
Scotch - Penguins Invasion
Francesco Napoli - Balla Balla
Roxanne - Charlene

Siegbran, Thursday, 11 December 2014 23:04 (ten years ago)

And for a 'must-hear covers' poll, we send in a top 5 or smth?

Siegbran, Thursday, 11 December 2014 23:07 (ten years ago)

I feel like the covers thing could just be us listing all the ones we can find/think of while noting the interesting ones? We could make another thread for it.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 11 December 2014 23:36 (ten years ago)

Diana Est - Le Louvre
Do Piano - Again
Ginny - Can't Be Serious
Baby's Gang - Disco Maniac
Moon Ray - Comanchero
Helen - Zanzibar
San Giovanni Bassista - Summer Sweat
Sandra - Secret Land
Capricorn - I Need Love
Amin Peck - Girl on Me

donna rouge, Thursday, 11 December 2014 23:50 (ten years ago)

never thought of "can't be serious" as italo but i guess it is, incredible track

gr8080, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:07 (ten years ago)

wow never knew there was an OG of that

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 00:13 (ten years ago)

"Comanchero" already nominated btw (under "Raggio Di Luna")

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 00:14 (ten years ago)

wow never knew there was an OG of that

are you referring to AMO1 or something else?

gr8080, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:17 (ten years ago)

Hey daavid, I nominated "Touch" by Nemesy but it doesn't appear to be on the big list you posted..

brimstead, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:41 (ten years ago)

Yeah I only knew the Mountain of One version xp

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 00:47 (ten years ago)

"can't be serious" is amazing, it's british though, produced by dude who did gerry rafferty's city to city album, and it feels more like new wave rock or something to me. wgaf, though, really.

brimstead, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:49 (ten years ago)

AMo1 version is a disgrace

brimstead, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:49 (ten years ago)

discogs has it labelled as italo

gr8080, Friday, 12 December 2014 00:56 (ten years ago)

Italo is a feeling

brimstead, Friday, 12 December 2014 01:01 (ten years ago)

I've just realised that "Livin' in Your Love" is the best song ever made.

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 01:06 (ten years ago)

OTM

example (crüt), Friday, 12 December 2014 02:06 (ten years ago)

Tempted to vote for "Donna Rouge," but it's definitely more new wave.

My bonus 3:

Fred Ventura - The Years (Go By)
Neon - Skydiver
Larry Paul Emmett - Evita

Michael F Gill, Friday, 12 December 2014 02:55 (ten years ago)

Claudio Mingardi - Star
Cheaps - Moliendo Café
Vicio Latino - Sabes Qué Hora Es?

3/3

cock chirea, Friday, 12 December 2014 03:25 (ten years ago)

'can't be serious' totally codes as italo to me but more on the afro/cosmic axis, i guess

forgot about the moon ray/raggio di luna thing, so if it's not too late sub in:

Fockewulf 190 - Body Heat

donna rouge, Friday, 12 December 2014 03:43 (ten years ago)

Hey daavid, I nominated "Touch" by Nemesy but it doesn't appear to be on the big list you posted..

― brimstead, Friday, December 12, 2014 12:41 AM (3 hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

I'll add it.

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 04:23 (ten years ago)

I feel like the covers thing could just be us listing all the ones we can find/think of while noting the interesting ones? We could make another thread for it.

^This. I like the idea as well but this is my first poll and I'd like to keep it simple. Could somebody else organize it? It could also be a non-ballot poll.

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 04:26 (ten years ago)

A bit over 5 hours left to nominate.

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 04:28 (ten years ago)

Two tracks I nominated are not on the list - "Chinese Revenge" by Koto (fwiw the version on the Spotify list sounds like a remake) and "Cosmo Tron" by Laserdance.

timellison, Friday, 12 December 2014 05:59 (ten years ago)

"Casio - Cybernetic Love" on the list should be "Casco - Cybernetic Love"

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 09:57 (ten years ago)

Looks like I missed the nomination window, which is OK because most of my favourites are already listed, but if not and if it's deemed sufficiently Italo please may I nominate "Hypnotic Samba" by Hypnotic Samba?

(just being cheeky really, if nobody else has nominated it by now I guess I'd be the only vote anyway...)

club mate martyr (a passing spacecadet), Friday, 12 December 2014 11:42 (ten years ago)

xxp - I'll add them, timellison.

xp - Thanks seandalai, I'll change it.

spacecadet, it's in!

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 15:01 (ten years ago)

The nominations period is now closed.

I'll start the voting thread tonight.

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 15:04 (ten years ago)

If ever there was a poll that needed a YouTube playlist...

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 18:45 (ten years ago)

otm, huge gaps on spotify

gr8080, Friday, 12 December 2014 18:46 (ten years ago)

I would consider going through the noms and doing it but am super-busy and probably couldn't until Monday or even Tuesday, so... might not be worth it? Though I guess the voting will be at least a week, right?

emil.y, Friday, 12 December 2014 19:00 (ten years ago)

I just had a look at collaborative playlist creators like http://www.youtubeplaylist.org/ and http://www.b00mbox.com/ but didn't find anything that worked/was vaguely user-friendly.

death in Skegness (seandalai), Friday, 12 December 2014 19:09 (ten years ago)

i'm working on one; we'll see if i finish it

gr8080, Friday, 12 December 2014 19:32 (ten years ago)

I'll try and add the bonus stuff to my spotify playlist tonight. Currently in work.

ewar woowar (or something), Friday, 12 December 2014 20:11 (ten years ago)

Voting period will be over two weeks. I'm thinking till the end of the month. Plenty of time to get that playlist going... Thanks for putting it together, BTW.

daavid, Friday, 12 December 2014 23:48 (ten years ago)

Sorry ILM, my computer broke and I won't be able to open the voting thread until Monday.

daavid, Saturday, 13 December 2014 21:03 (ten years ago)

Hey everyone, there's an extended discogs list that is just italo covers:
http://www.discogs.com/lists/Italo-disco-cover-versions/140204?page=1&limit=250

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 14 December 2014 18:10 (ten years ago)

Thanks daavid!

I always forget "Take a Chance" is a cover because it's perfect, and I heard it before the original, which is... merely quite good.

List doesn't include the Spices and Pepper Men cover (1982) of the Peppers' "Pepper Box" (1974), but then it is apparently French and everything I've clicked on on the discogs list is Italian, so maybe that's why not

club mate martyr (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 14 December 2014 20:48 (ten years ago)

Looking through that list of covers and quite a few are terrible, but A.P.O.'s cover of "O Superman" is amazing.

naus, Monday, 15 December 2014 04:01 (ten years ago)

Pepper Box just uses elements rather than being an outright cover though? Belter tune.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 15 December 2014 17:56 (ten years ago)

daavid i webmailed you-- let me know if you got it

gr8080, Monday, 15 December 2014 18:55 (ten years ago)

aaaaaand if its not too late to nominate:

Dhuo ‎– Walkin'

10/10

gr8080, Monday, 15 December 2014 18:59 (ten years ago)

gr8080, that's way late ...but I'll include it. :)

Got your webmail.
