Nominations will be open until next Friday December 5th
Voting will start right away and will be open until the 12th
results roll out 15th (maybe the 13th as tradition of starting right away it all depends)

Just doing an albums poll this year.

Please use bold formatting as usual for nominating

i.e.
Artist - Album

Please check this google spreadsheet before posting your nominations. Makes it easier for us.

Last year was a struggle and a few complained that they were burnt out on polls by January ,plus 95% of the votes came in the last 2 days a weeks voting period is enough and since *This* is the only dates I can run the poll here it is.
I did ask around looking for someone to take over the poll but nobody wanted to.
I do hope everyone on rolling metal thread, ilx posters and lurkers will take part. Anyone reading is welcome. Invite your friends etc

I will start us off with
Agalloch - The Serpent & the Sphere
Godflesh - A World Lit Only By Fire
Jute Gyte - Ressentiment
Triptykon - Melana Chasmata

Please use that format when nominating thanks. No limits for nominating since it's a short nominations period.
Happy nominating!

A collaborative Spotify playlist has been set up for everyone to add their nominations to. I don't have time to update it myself but hopefully someone will volunteer to look after it.

Wovenhand - Refractory Obdurate
Is this metal?

Siegbran, Thursday, 27 November 2014 18:16 (eleven years ago)

I thought Swans would be the first to get that after the controversies the time it wasn't allowed then the time it was.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 27 November 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)

idk obv i defer to the community but when i heard this i thought metal

Mordy, Thursday, 27 November 2014 18:21 (eleven years ago)

IDK, do we need a Swans clause? They're on most of the metal magazine polls this year.

Frobisher, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:20 (eleven years ago)

we have around 157 albums/eps nominated.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:20 (eleven years ago)

well i believe they got included last time. if someone nominates it then it will be included.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:21 (eleven years ago)

I listened to a few Wovenhand tracks on youtube... hard to pin them down - They seem like metal, but then they also kinda seem like Dead Can Dance stuff. I'd let them in, they're spooky and heavy.

Frobisher, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

No I was genuinely surprised, I have a couple Wovenhand records and they're mostly acoustic country singer/songwriter-type stuff. If they've gone full-on metal, good on them.

Siegbran, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:24 (eleven years ago)

I dont think they have gone full on metal but most of the people i know who love them are into metal, esp doom. The doomy vibe christian lyrics fits.
I'm all for allowing it , no one need vote for it if they dont want to.

Id certainly say it's something a metal fan might like.

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:27 (eleven years ago)

purists dont vote anyway so who cares!

Cosmic Slop, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:28 (eleven years ago)

lol it's true...

Frobisher, Thursday, 27 November 2014 19:35 (eleven years ago)

I honestly would be surprised if Wovenhand got enough votes to get in.
Mordy why not start a youtube campaigning thread and post a vid or 2?

Zvi - Zvi

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 30 November 2014 00:30 (eleven years ago)

Re Wovenhand, on one hand I feel it's crazytalk to include in a metal poll. There's folk and post-punk, but zero metal content. On the other hand, there is a darkness that appeals to metal fans. It is my #2 overall so far so I definitely recommend it, even if I won't vote for it. I also noticed several metalheads in the crowd when I saw Shellac this summer. I could see the latest by both groups doing well in Rock-A-Rolla's poll possibly.

ultros ultros-ghali, Sunday, 30 November 2014 15:52 (eleven years ago)

I did not listen to a ton of metal this year but here's the stuff I happened to like & took the time to seek out

Black Monolith - Passenger
Woods of Desolation - As the Stars
Swans - To be Kind (someone said swans counted!)
Boris - Noise

I also liked the latest mastodon album but I don't think they fit the criteria round here anymore

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

I can think of no reason to disallow Mastodon

Simon H., Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:13 (eleven years ago)

boris, swans, woods of desolation already nominated. There's a spreadsheet to check nominations
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1d8-3k-kVVhO2-0yA7OCWhN2c1jFTG4xxOlW0UH2GIXA/edit#gid=0

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:18 (eleven years ago)

of course Mastodon count

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:18 (eleven years ago)

whoops my bad

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:29 (eleven years ago)

seems strange to nominate swans then say mastodon shouldnt count :)

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:30 (eleven years ago)

I guess I wasn't sure if the past two mastodon albums were metal or more like hard rock, like queens of the Stone Age-ish (especially the hunter). then again as you said, swans latest albums aren't exactly traditional metal either and they def get love from metalheads.

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

tbf its still a hard rock/metal poll. Metal is a very broad church. Rolling Metal thread is hardly full of purists.

I'm somewhat surprised the Mastodon album hasn't featured in non-metal EOY lists like the last one. It's good enough and got good reviews inmost places.
Maybe metal isn't as in fashion as it was the past 5 years? Noticed a lack of metal and hip-hop this year in lists.

Has critical coverage started getting narrower?

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 16:59 (eleven years ago)

I'm guessing it might be the token pick on a few forthcoming lists, although woods of desolation could take that honor as well, given its post-rock vibes, which ended up giving deafheaven the annual "metal album loved by non metal critics" designation last year

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 30 November 2014 17:06 (eleven years ago)

I expect Pallbearer to be the crossover hit, but I've been wrong more often than not.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 30 November 2014 17:14 (eleven years ago)

mastodon's two late-aughts albums both ended up on multiple general albums lists with high rankings in several instances. skye was #3 in bloody time magazine!! and those are definitely full-stop metal albums.

flash forward to 2012 - the latest converge album was #1 on most metal/hard rock only lists and got me, before that point not a huge metal/hardcore guy aside from occasional mastodon dalliances - deep in love with that band and exploring a lot of really hard shit I wouldn't have previously explored. but it got little to no love from many general albums lists. and then the next year deafheaven is adored by tons of people who aren't traditionally into metal. it's impossible to predict

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Sunday, 30 November 2014 17:23 (eleven years ago)

Dawnbringer - Night of the Hammer
Lotus Thief - Rervm

auto focus, Sunday, 30 November 2014 17:28 (eleven years ago)

Maybe we should change the title to Hard Rock & Metal Poll then?

I'll go ahead and include all my hard rock/stoner/occult/psych then, as they certainly won't get any attention in the main ILM poll other than Goat. That is, unless we take over... Also, there's more than enough active writers here who could make a big difference in the Pazz & Jop poll. It only took 6 votes to get some albums in the top 100! Ask to be included at pazzandjop at villagevoice.com, it might not be too late!

Glad someone acknowledges Dawnbringer. Can't believe no one's mentioned Slough Feg yet.

I second Mansion - Uncreation EP. At 36:32 it's as long as some full lengths, and they are progressing nicely. Full length due early next year. Also, everyone listen to Spiders, please.

I just saw a list that called itself "best heavy music of 2014".
I think that is what our poll is like

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 22:52 (eleven years ago)

http://www.steelforbrains.com/post/103989943657/rb-best-of-2014

Cosmic Slop, Sunday, 30 November 2014 22:56 (eleven years ago)

Yeah that's a good site.

If the hope for a 1991 or 1984 music history repeat is what keeps you pushing play, though, then disappoint will likely top your EOTY list every damn time.

There were some important albums those years, but I think 2014 is more fun and diverse. I have no complaints about the amount of good music this year.

Fastnbulbous, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

I thought it was a year with a ton of decent records but few great ones. Certainly less than the last several years.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:42 (eleven years ago)

Is the Steel for Brains podcast still happening? I was enjoying them.

jmm, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:51 (eleven years ago)

Yeah. We just had life force us both to take a break. Plan is to record a new one this week.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

And thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it.

EZ Snappin, Sunday, 30 November 2014 23:54 (eleven years ago)

missed this thread yesterday ... two things:

1. lol at arguing Wovenhand and Mastodon's metal status within the same space. no shade at anyone, just, y'know ... that's pretty funny.

2. no way Woods of Desolation is the token metal pick this year. just not enough momentum behind it, plus it came out in January. and not with Pallbearer, Mastodon and, to a lesser extent, Triptykon and At The Gates albums available for those slots. i wish i thought we'd see a mini-Deafheaven-style surge for WoD but it ain't gonna happen.

alpine static, Monday, 1 December 2014 00:05 (eleven years ago)

I'd have pegged Agalloch for the Deafheaven slot, but I'm not sure anyone's still listening to that album.

jmm, Monday, 1 December 2014 00:11 (eleven years ago)

As The Stars just isn't good enough, and their choice for a much rougher sound also doesn't help their crossover appeal. Torn Beyond Reason would've been huge if it were released this year.

Siegbran, Monday, 1 December 2014 00:33 (eleven years ago)

I love As The Stars and think it's as good or better than Sunbather (yes, I like Sunbather), but I haven't heard Torn Beyond Reason. I should remedy that...

alpine static, Monday, 1 December 2014 00:41 (eleven years ago)

OMG this Spectral Lore.

Also, the Blut Aus Nord is surprisingly different from the last one but is really nice.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 02:37 (eleven years ago)

Wait, Spectral Lore turned into U2 for a minute.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 02:46 (eleven years ago)

2014 is probably one of the best years for metal I've ever known, though I've got a preference for experimental/proggy/shoegazey stuff rather than 'metal' metal though. Y'know what I mean.

At the start of the year I thought I was pretty much done with metal and then I kept hearing crazy shit and well, here we are. It's weird that the older I get the more metal black metal I listen to. idgi.

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 1 December 2014 02:49 (eleven years ago)

I never got U2 vibes from Spectral Lore I must admit

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 1 December 2014 02:50 (eleven years ago)

It was just that break in "Cold March". Album is mostly awesome so far.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 03:11 (eleven years ago)

Also, I may have been listening from the next room at that point.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 03:13 (eleven years ago)

Bastard Feast - Osculum Infame
Baptists - Bloodmines
Code Orange - I Am King
Couch Slut - My Life as a Woman
Idylls - Prayer for Terrene
Foreseen HKI - Helsinki Savagery
Krokofant - Krokofant
Oozing Wound - Earth Suck
Secret Cutter - "Self Titled"
Trioscapes - Digital Dream Sequence
Vampire - Vampire
Yautja - Songs of Descent

anonanon, Monday, 1 December 2014 08:13 (eleven years ago)

I'm sure we allowed Wind's Poem by Mount Eerie a couple of years ago. If that fits a BM definition then Wovenhand is surely ok.

I got big into it once i passed 30 and once I passed 40 it hasnt changed

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 18:43 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, 30 was when it started clicking for me too. Seems to be the norm here!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 18:59 (eleven years ago)

Looking back, I guess it was more 28/29.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 1 December 2014 19:00 (eleven years ago)

tbh it was the nazi association stuff that put me off investigating. It was much easier to find who was and wasnt than it was at the time

i'm 27 & enjoy some black/extreme/etc. metal as well as classic thrash like slayer but am OCCASIONALLY put off by the real dirge-y stuff or make snap judgments to not easily pursue bands/albums with names & titles that sound like third-rate lovecraft.

so what y'all are saying is in 3 years i'll be like "this shit is absolutely the move"?

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Monday, 1 December 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)

*not readily pursue

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Monday, 1 December 2014 22:15 (eleven years ago)

many xposts to whoever mentioned this agalloch record: i quite like it thus far.

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Monday, 1 December 2014 22:21 (eleven years ago)

The Agalloch is excellent but maybe not quite as good as the previous 2. Not far off it mind you. Agalloch never do anything less than excellent imo. Ashes Against The Grain is quite bloody marvellous and , for me, up there with any metal album of the last 20 year,

Cosmic Slop, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:27 (eleven years ago)

xpost to talk of this years crossover hit - -Yob make the rolling stone top 50 albums of the year. I was a bit disappointed with this years Agalloch album after Marrow of the Spirit.

auto focus, Monday, 1 December 2014 22:37 (eleven years ago)

i think the band were bemused with that. It certainly was a pure wtf moment

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 00:20 (eleven years ago)

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 11:22 (eleven years ago)

erm 3 days left

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 11:23 (eleven years ago)

Interesting, I got into black metal at around 30 too. That was 2000. However by the end of the decade I got sick of it and mostly stopped, except for an occasional Enslaved and Darkthrone album. Yr 30s perhaps you encounter some truths that are far more horrifying than your 20s angst, but by 40 you're ready to leave it behind ;)

Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:07 (eleven years ago)

I'm 30 now, and I'm definitely much less interested in black metal than I was three years ago. A big part of that is that I'm bored with harsh vocals. I want to hear powerful and expressive sung vocals.

jmm, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:15 (eleven years ago)

Yes but there's only so many Sabaton records you can listen to before you crave some good oldfashioned throat-tearing roars.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 15:31 (eleven years ago)

it works both ways as people get fed up with screaming/singing and seek out the opposite

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

i don't mind screaming, really - the death growl shit can be kinda fuckin corny though, when poorly executed.

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 16:52 (eleven years ago)

speaking of the sabaton record from this year fuckin rips

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 18:56 (eleven years ago)

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 2 December 2014 19:08 (eleven years ago)

It does, it's not quite Carolus Rex but it's not far off.

Siegbran, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 19:31 (eleven years ago)

Bloodbath - Grand Morbid Funeral
Coffin Dust - This Cemetery, My Kingdom
Children of Technology - Future Decay
Exordium Mors - The Apotheosis of Death
Pyrrhon - The Mother of Virtues

sure to vote for coffin dust, but i figure i oughta put the others in too

j., Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:03 (eleven years ago)

Kayo Dot - Coffins On Io
Cynic - Kindly Bent To Free Us
Have A Nice Life - The Unnatural World

One part-time metal band, one former metal band and one outfit on a metal label with crossover appeal.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:11 (eleven years ago)

pretty sure the last have a nice life made the poll . Kayo Dot are now Ulver clones.

Cosmic Slop, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:12 (eleven years ago)

Kayo Dot made a late 70s yacht prog record.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:14 (eleven years ago)

Sadly true. They're my favourite band, Coffins etc is my least favourite of their releases so I'm not going to defend it too hard. The next album will be completely different probably. They are like Ulver in that sense but Kayo Dot have a far better amazing-to-dull ratio imo.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:28 (eleven years ago)

I really like the new record. Took a few listens to get a handle on it, but it's a keeper.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 2 December 2014 21:31 (eleven years ago)

Cosmic Slop, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 12:30 (eleven years ago)

I really like the Kayo Dot but I don't think it's metal at all, even by a broad definition. Closer to a cross between "yacht-prog" and 80s goth or something.

Haikai No Ku - Ultra High Dimensionality
Shroud of The Heretic - Revelations In Alchemy
Cold World - How The Gods Chill
Bastard Sapling - Instinct Is Survival
Ghast - Dread Doom Ruin
Nazaronai - the most painful time happens only once has it arrived already..?
Amulet - The First
Henry Blacker - Hungry Dogs Will Eat Dirty Puddings
Pig Heart Transplant - For Mass Consumption

how the gods chill - is this some kind of epicurean concept album

j., Wednesday, 3 December 2014 14:46 (eleven years ago)

check it out on bandcamp to confirm that no-one else will vote for it

I really liked Focus when I listened to it. I gather that the new Cynic is more of a straight-up prog/fusion thing, without the extreme metal elements? Will try it. Listening to Blut aus Nord atm.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:14 (eleven years ago)

Ha, not sure what "straight-up prog/fusion" even really means tbh.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:14 (eleven years ago)

New Cynic's like slightly proggy AOR with some fusion licks, really. I kind of enjoyed it but haven't listened to it much.

I just thought I'd throw in some relative curveballs yesterday and see if anything sticks.

ultros ultros-ghali, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 17:20 (eleven years ago)

*to see if anything stuck. English is my first language, I swear.

Yeah, I got bored 15m in or so. I had trouble seeing how the compositions came together. The singer was OK but I wanted the vocals to be stronger and more expressive.

Primordial are rapidly shooting up to the top of the year for me. It's one of the only albums (Against Me! is another) I find lyrically affecting, like a thousand-yard-stare down bloody centuries.

jmm, Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:03 (eleven years ago)

seemed ponderous to me, i gave it a pass

would be nice to be able to get with a 1000-yd-century-stare tho, who doesn't love that

j., Wednesday, 3 December 2014 19:06 (eleven years ago)

the problem with the primordial record is that it's not as good as to the nameless dead

it's great though

Colour Haze - To The Highest Gods We Knew

Fastnbulbous, Friday, 5 December 2014 13:55 (eleven years ago)

can anyone remember the max amount of albums allowed to vote for from last year?

I think it was 50. Nobody wants more than that do they?

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 15:25 (eleven years ago)

50 sounds more than enough.

A few late additions

Alraune - the Process of Self-Immolation
Yith - Yith
Xothist - Simulacrum
Vermin Womb - Permanence
Primitive Man/Fister - Split 12"

auto focus, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:01 (eleven years ago)

Interested no one has nominated Celestite by WiTTR. I can't bring myself to either.

auto focus, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:02 (eleven years ago)

consider it nominated cuz im doing it

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:03 (eleven years ago)

honest q: how heavy does it have to be to be nommed?
like is this acceptable? https://worstward.bandcamp.com/album/spiral-horns-black-onions-et-al
is there where we put weird drone stuff too?
i mean not like it matters in the long run wrt polls and voting, but there's no other home for stuff like that and i feel it's worth recognizing on an EOY basis.

La Lechera, Friday, 5 December 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

you can nominate and vote for what you feel is appropriate but do bear in mind you might be the only one. However the point is to vote for your fave albums. I see no reason why heavier/weird drone shouldn't count.

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:03 (eleven years ago)

if we can include noise i would like to include this one just before ze deadline:

Pharmakon - Bestial Burden

hanley ramirez ordering a pizza (slothroprhymes), Friday, 5 December 2014 17:16 (eleven years ago)

there's just under 6 hours left to nominate

Cosmic Slop, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:18 (eleven years ago)

i think the more the merrier - the nomination list is a good way to check out new stuff.

auto focus, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:40 (eleven years ago)

Ok then
Ulaan Markhor - Spiral Horns, Black Onions, et al

La Lechera, Friday, 5 December 2014 17:50 (eleven years ago)

yeah! glad to see you nominate that, La Lechera.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 5 December 2014 18:13 (eleven years ago)

It's great if you like loud guitars, plodding rhythms, dynamic heavy songs without words. I figure it fits in here better than anywhere else.
I'll see if there's anything else I can think of in the next 6 hrs or w/e.

La Lechera, Friday, 5 December 2014 18:40 (eleven years ago)
