i think a lot of ppl lost interest in rap around that time. at the turn of the decade there was a lot of speculation by certain critics (simon reynolds, sfj in partic) that hip hop had stagnated. deej made an imo classic mix that's probably still out there somewhere rebutting that argument. in hindsight i think it's clear 08-12' was a transitional period. many of the people weren't sold on gucci mane (the one rapper many held up in 09 as an example of rap's vitality) are now very enthusiastic about the generation that were influenced by him (critical love for migos, etc.) of course not everyone is down with where that transition has lead us (whiney g, for example) but it at least feels like there is more optimism and positivity about rap right now than any pt since i started reading rap blogs & keeping up with the genre

if you take the rolling rap thread titles as a rough approximation of "lcd rap" trends you can kinda get a picture of why some people lost interest. ringtone & snap were very colourful, bouncy, immediate. and i think that when that was succeeded by the more monochromatic trap sound of autogoon & gun sounds many lost interest. fruity swag (another classic shrimp post this time by jordan: http://somanyshrimp.com/2009/06/25/k-e-producer-of-the-summer/) is maybe a counterexample here, but it never really took off at the time and i would argue is at the peak of its influence right now (k camp, young thug.) we stopped that model of thread naming in 2013 in favour of self-aware rap critic in-jokes, but my suggestion that year was 'sunz of mane' which i still think is hilarious but was maybe too divisive. this past year's trend was "weird voices" (to be forever documented in this horrifyingly named whiney thread ayo best coco yayo maco wacko no-fi schmoundcloud dooblebob vine rap thingy of 2014) and it seems like people are finding their way back into rap through this stuff. joe now posts to rap threads for example, and i've had many irl friends ask me if i've heard of young thug, etc.

in late 08 (iirc) dj drama was raided for selling mixtapes using industry beats ... so all the rappers started releasing mixtapes with all-original material, '09 was the point where the industry totally bottomed out & everyone was downloading free mixtapes for the first time. critics thought freddie gibbs was the only thing worth hearing but basically in 09-10 you have the arrival or peak output of:

two fairly unheralded tech n9ne and atmosphere new albums last year sold 35K and 25K respectively first week

Tech N9ne is a pretty good example of strengthening your retail numbers by releasing albums the way other rappers release mixtapes. E-40 too, really.

there are some missing from spotify but kinda surprising how much is actually there, especially mixtapes.

a lot of this stuff shows up months after the fact; for this thread and the techno/house in particular, I'm likely to cycle back in a few months and check to see what's been upped
I mentioned this in the project page, but i'm well aware that the immediacy, widespread popularity and low cost of entry of hip hop as opposed to other popular genres means that a beast as big as spotify is ill served to keep pace with what's au courant. anybody looking to keep a day to day record is gonna find soundcloud/youtube lists more effective here for certain.
that said, spotify does manage about 50% to 60% even here and that number is steadily increasing... and more to the point, I'm not insane enough to want to manage multiple media streams.
and while i wouldn't want to interfere with the popular "lol forks" sentiment, it might be worth considering that it's more an opportunity for regular posters here to broadcast the things you care about (that happen to be on spotify, yes) to an audience that can't otherwise find the thread or leap directly into the fray. 19 people subscribed immediately.

the @mctreeg ep IS on spotify btw and "probably nu it" ended up as one of fave singles of the year.
good example of the limitations of that service though: the bio for Tree lists him as a hardcore punk/alternative metal band and there appears to be at least four artists included on the artist page.

If you think shmurda et al weren't influenced by drill despite shmurda explicitly saying so in numerous interviews + the constant use of "broski" "opps" "with the shits" etc etc you're tripping

"Drill" is not and never has been solely chop beats, king louie's tapes all show a diverse range of production incl some influenced by east coast producers ... It's not jahlil's beat that is drill-like, it's other elements of the song (although there's nothing about the beat that makes it inherently not-drill either)

Jahlil was asked exactly that question in a fader interview, I'm sure I saw it elsewhere, in the early shmurda interviews everyone asked him about drill

^we disagree with this, right? obviously rap is not a perfect meritocracy but it's like, one example of a rapper the writer feels is deserving of success but isn't (yet), then skips over the history of how the other artists came up and just posits their success sui generis or by attributing it to established artists' "shepherding." do nicki and ross jump on your remix to shepherd you to fame? or to take advantage of internet hype and steal the shine? and there are just too many instances of artists being lead to fame by big labels/names and then totally flopping for that to say its not based on some form of merit (some combo of hitmaking & marketability). also, that the two counterexamples are azealia and a$ap and elsewhere namedrops "australian producer Flume" (23 year old white australian dude lol) seems kind of telling in terms of the writers values, or what counts as 'organic' or social media. not saying there isn't a grain of truth in this but it just seems like the way its written is really misleadingly one-sided

Drake has always played up his love of Houston and his friendships with Bun B and other guys but it was never really clear to me that J. Prince or any of those guys had any particular investment in him beyond 'really famous guy who gives us props'

Yeah, I asked my local internet rap nerd/historian about it and this is what he told me:

"J. Prince's son J. Prince, Jr. discovered Drake and became Drake's manager. He introduced Drake to Wayne, Baby, etc. When Drake signed to Young Money/Cash Money, Cortez Bryant illegally became Drake's manager. That's why J.Prince, Jr. is getting paid off him. J. Prince, Jr. is demanding more money but Cortez's defense is they can't pay more because Baby still owes them money too. There's also a deeper situation with Universal.and Cash Money. Drake was forced into signing that contract. Him and Sylvia Rhone (who was running Universal at the time) were beefing behind that. Years ago Drake publicly said he couldn't stand Sylvia and wouldn't sign nothing cuz she hating on him until he got really hot. But because of the situation with Sylvia paying radio stations to blow up "Best I Ever Had" he was forced into signing with Cash Money/Universal."

He's unique in the sense that he's one of the few who's not rapping like migos, gucci, future, thug over trap beats.
I agree he's kinda straightforward but there are details in his delivery, like he's rapping effortlessly, but it's still very dynamic. I think he's a great rapper.

part of the problem w/ houston specifically is that nothing has popped at all since swishahouse. like the bay and LA had this influx of talent in the last few years and someone like e-40 was able to connect with those guys for a real legit radio hit, that prob helped him get on a big sean song that was massive.

That Father album is incredibly produced! I'm not big with lyricism - English as second language prob a lot to do with that - but boy is hiphop on a roll, sonically, at the moment. Mike Will and DJ Mustard as the star-producers, constantly varying their sound and fitting it to whole albums like My Krazy Life, Rich Off Mackin and SremmLife. And weird sounds from less pop people like Father, Chief Keef and Sicko Mobb - who's latest tape is pretty explicit about wanting to take footwork to the masses, right?

It's prob because I follow along more at the moment than usually, but it seems to me that hiphop is at a rare peak at the moment, sonically speaking. Even the lyricists like Kendrick concoct crazy sonical cathedrals. Or perhaps it's just the joy of being in Denmark, out of the loop and not at all knowing what's going on, peaking in at times and marvelling at how crazy wonderful it all is.

Pavement wasn't meta. They were about sincerity through distortion, working from the notion that since the mainstream (there was such a thing back then) was corrupted you had to work your way around it. Or at least that's how I understood them (and most of the "indie" scene) at the time. When they succeeded it was because their sincerity shone through more often than not.

It's almost like every time you hear keef you're discovering rap music for the first time again. But in a bad way

i wouldn't point out "i got all the hoes" as a noteworthy lyric if it didn't seem amusingly set against the description of the song!

My point was more to mock the stunted emotional life of post malone in the contrast

i haven't even heard this guy whose success has been concerning you so much lately but if he's emotionally stunted compared to chief keef then i shudder to think how many hoes he's got
