Visigoth, The Revenant King, an album that comes out 1/27 on Metal Blade. See the 2015 rolling metal thread for more details.

Also, my CD/DVD 40th anniversary editions of King Crimson's first four studio albums arrived in today's mail, so I'll be checking those out this weekend.

half this record is great for the amazing african rhythms and half this record is that island hybrid of french/caribbean proto-dixieland/new orleans clarinet-heavy dance music. which is cool too, but the african stuff is really great.

that don harper lp is all kinds of ridiculous, also kind of great. jumps all over the place from funky futuristic space jazz to ambient alien soundscapes to pieces that sound like they were composed for seventies tv commercials.

no lime tangier, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 05:44 (ten years ago)

I need to hear that Don Harper.

Visions of Dune is straight up analog synth attack, with structured/sequenced parts that sound like they're going to kick into prog rock jams but don't. It's probably not all-time classic but quite fun.

The Complete Braxton maybe the most dishonest album title of all time, unless it's a subscription thing where they send you his latest release every two or three days.

Currently listening to the new Eddie Henderson album, Collective Portrait, which comes out February 10 on the Smoke Sessions label. Has Gary Bartz and George Cables on it.

"think bruce russell might give you the side-eye for listing the dead c under "prog" (trapdoor fucking exit is a mighty thing though)"

Dead C works good in mixes with progish stuff. I'm a big tent prog fan; so post rock, noise, some post punk, electronic music etc. gets in the list at times. I also think some 70s funk like P-Funk, Mandrill, War and others sometimes mix well in a big prog music list.

I know nothing about ambient black metal, but the music on that mix isn't far off from the noise I used to listen to in high school. Although there's a gothic folkiness that I hear in that mix that I like.

no lime, Fotheringay 2 avoids the 60s-70s classic Second Album Slump by a mile, maybe cos it took 40 years to finish. Def worth the wait: earthier than I expected, rolling English folk-country, making my Nashville Scene ballot even, and not just the Sandy Show; they all contribute a lot.
Fairport's What We Did..., AKA self-titled American release I bought: revelatory at thee time and still great, although the vocals (incl soon-gone Iain Matthews) can, just occasionally, seem a little teen starry-eyed now, but several of 'em were teens, and Sandy always ruled.
Heyday is very fine too, despite the seedy sound (can't balme the Beeb; Pour Down Like Silver is yet another that sounds no better on CD than it did on record, though never had any prob w sonics of What...)
I've read that Joe Harriot is the Ornette of Britain. Describe his albums please someone.

I dig thee cover! How's sounds?

Never could get into Only Ones'Special View as much as I wanted to, though got good reviews from reliable sources. Something about the vocals. I'm advised that I might like their BBC sessions better. (Or maybe the original UK studio releases, since SV was cobbled together for us Americans.)

How'd that latest Axiom experience turn out?

dow, Thursday, 12 March 2015 19:08 (ten years ago)

The White Lightning is good - it's ex-The Litter guys making a racket with a more fleshed out hard rock sound, bits of Cream and Crazy Horse in there. Maybe not a lost classic but pretty damn good.

I can sympathize on the Only Ones btw, it's taken me a while to get past Perret's voice. You might want to check out England's Glory, the band he did before the Only Ones, he sounds a bit more Richman/Reed in tone. The song "City of Fun" is excellent.

brimstead, Monday, 16 March 2015 06:22 (ten years ago)

stopped working to read more of a brief history of seven killings, the marlon james book jamaican crime novel covering the mid 70s -- 80s. listening to some stuff from that era ('75 -- '76) i haven't heard before, like

honey boy -- impossible love
teddy brown -- midnight train to georgia
louisa marks -- caught you in a lie
the pioneers -- nine pound steel
owen gray -- the child a crying
aswad -- back to africa
the migthy maytones -- madness

etc.

On January 30 (sorry, it took a while for me to latch onto this lovely thread) no lime tangier posted an album cover with stained glass windows in the background, hippie-ish dancing Christians in a circle, and Jesus seated in the center enrobed in light. What is that album? Looks like my kinda thing.

should pull out ginsberg's first blues album again sometime... bit of a mixed bag: some of the recordings he did with harry smith, the dylan stuff and on into the early eighties. does walk a tight-rope between affecting and embarrassing, and don't ever need to hear the interminable orlovsky tune again.

the evie sands lp is pretty nice sunshiney pop with some psychish flourishes. keep meaning to investigate her mid-sixties girl group era recordings.

& karin krog is great (though only heard a few tracks off that release up there), goes from fairly straight jazz to very out. for a contrast, with the terje rypdal group and this added as a bonus track to the album she recorded with dexter gordon, both from 1970.

Will have to check some more Bartz. I mostly know Gato's Chapter albums, but remember liking the one on Arista Freedom w Dollar Brand (Abdullah Ibrahim, who's also great---check Ekayah and Water From An Ancient Well. for a start).
And way before the Web, I ordered something, was sent Gato's El Pampero by mistake: LP on Flying Dutchman, live at Montreux with Lonnie Liston Smith on piano, Nana Vasconcelos on berimbau and other things, Sonny Morgan on congas, also two R&B session aces, bassist Chuck Rainey, Benard "Pretty" Purdie on drums (who said he ghosted some Beatles tracks; don't remember any comment from Ringo). Awesome, I kept it. (CD adds "El Gato," long studio track with some of the same back-up, but also adding Ron Carter, a bass clarinet player etc., arranged by Oliver Nelson)

dow, Tuesday, 14 April 2015 13:38 (ten years ago)

Gato's also on things like The Jazz Composer's Orchestra album (w/ Cecil Taylor and Pharoah Sanders), the first Liberation Music Orchestra alb and Don Cherry's 60s Blue Note recs - dude had a very loud and raw tenor tone at first, so it was sort've surprising that he moved into fusak mush in the 70s (I guess playing on the Last Tango S/T started to push him in that direction)

Speaking of xpost Karin Krog, we're finally getting a not-Scando-release-only collection on June 16:

http://blog.lightintheattic.net/wp-content/uploads/tmp_2F1427319212308-6k9bgbylc7jpp66r-6fb4ac4ca8a53f0cc687ae92aabda074_2FLITA129_HighresCover-675x675.jpg

From Light In The Attic:

Karin Krog is as axiomatically Norwegian as ludefisk– but much easier for outsiders to love. For over 5 decades, Ms. Krog has masterfully blended electronic manipulation, avant garde rock, and experimental pop jazz to make music that is supremely unique. It’s an honor to be presenting Don’t Just Sing: An Anthology 1963-1999, a concise, career-spanning anthology, curated with Ms. Krog’s own input. We just can’t get enough of her Bobby Gentry cover! From press sheet:

Karin Krog
Don't Just Sing | An Anthology: 1963-1999

2xLP & CD Available: June 30, 2015 (Digital: June 16th)
Light In The Attic

The work of Karin Krog may be unfamiliar to much of the world, but in her native Norway and Scandinavia at large, she’s practically a household name. This says much about the local enthusiasm for post-bop jazz but also about the tyranny of distribution: until 1994, Krog’s albums weren’t available in the USA or UK, meaning three decades of recordings were waiting to be discovered. In theory, until now, she hasn’t had any regularly distributed albums in the US or the UK–this is certainly the first one even marketed/promoted in here and in England. With this anthology of her best recordings from 1963 to 1999–curated with Krog’s own input–we hope to set the record straight.

To listen to opening track “As A Wife Has A Cow” is to jump into the deep end. It’s 54 seconds of words, voice, and technology, a looped, echoing reading of a Gertrude Stein poem. The effect is disquieting and alien but deeply rhythmic, too–and that’s Krog’s USP. Don’t Just Sing takes in these spoken experiments along with free jazz, improvisation, standards, contemporary covers, and electronic manipulation. It features some of the best regarded jazz players in Europe, not least her partner, John Surman, the English saxophonist/multi-instrumentalist and composer. Like Annette Peacock, Krog experiments with solo vocals run through electronics and performs with progressive electric jazz combos and traditional acoustic groups as well.

Krog began singing jazz in the 1950s and started her first band in 1962. She not only had two tracks on the first ever Norwegian jazz LP, Metropol Jazz, but also became the first Norwegian jazz artist to record and release a full album (1964’s By Myself on the Philips label). Her sound developed as technological advances made new recording techniques possible, and she quickly embraced the album as the perfect form to contain her sonic experiments. “There is such a thing as too much manipulation,” says Krog today.

Recorded with tenor saxophonist Jan Garbarek and bass player Arild Andersen, 1968’s Joy is regarded as her masterwork. Tracks from it can be found on this compilation, as can a couple of interesting covers: Joni Mitchell’s “All I Want” and Bobby Gentry’s “Ode To Billy Joe,” both of which show how Krog brought jazz aesthetics to pop songs of the day. “I remember that there was a lot of buzz around Blue, and Joni Mitchell is, as everybody knows, a very talented singer and songwriter,” says Krog in the new liner notes.

“Glass" and “Tystnaden" are the two previously unreleased finds from the archives, the former written for a British documentary in 1997, the latter a soundscape improvisation from a 1963 studio session with Lars Werner on piano, Kurt Lindgren on bass, and Janne Carlsson on drums. The compilation rounds off with the “Psalm” movement from John Coltrane’s monumental piece, A Love Supreme. Krog’s version came at suggestion of the man himself. “It was John who pointed to the text on the inner sleeve of the Impulse! LP and said, ‘Karin, look. Why don’t you sing this?’” she remembers.

Krog remains fiercely productive, recording, performing, and running Meantime Records from her and John’s villa near Oslo. Now 77, she’s showing no signs of slowing down. “Everybody has to retire at some point, but I believe that once a musician, you’re always a musician,” she says. “If I can’t stand up and sing on stage anymore, I can always do it sitting down!”

Curated with Krog’s own input, this anthology showcases her best recordings from 1963 to 1999, including songs from 1968’s groundbreaking Joy, her 1970 Dexter Gordon collaboration Some Other Spring, her pop-jazz masterwork 1974’s We Could Be Flying, tracks from the Japanese only Different Days, Different Ways which focus on 1970-72 experimental vocal works, and previously unreleased tracks.

Just listened to the promo of the xpost Karin Krog antholgy, good stuff. "Ode To Billy Joe" doesn't really suit her, but otherwise yeah: she sounds like she's been around, all the more reason to go for the finer things in life, o baby. The more cosmic (more atmospheric, less earthy), still sensuous tracks later on--fave so far: "Don't Just Sing," with her tonal shifts mirrored and/or aided & abetted by studio and synth effects---rec. to fans of Sheila Jordan, maybe more than Annette Peacock, who's got something of a different (or just more) attitude. Krog sounds smart, sometimes sly, confident, like the lady who runs the detective's favorite bar (might be a bar with weed).

dow, Wednesday, 22 April 2015 20:09 (ten years ago)

Not so crazy about the sax solos on here, but usually she's just got keys, bass, drums, occasionally other percussion, that's all she needs.

It def sounds like a bar with weed.

Finally getting to these guys, via Tyler's 1977-80 shows, also his The Willies (AKA Feelies) stash, and a recent performance he's linked from YouTube. The '77 set takes off, has to u-turn and grab me up (so far), but that it does; some later boxcar flotation zones me in and out later, a few Willies numbers are too shiny-happy for me, but more often than not, here be meditative momentum, even a few American Dancestand work-outs, and tendrils of sweet potato love in my cellar. The Willies version of "The Great Pretender," between Leggo, Eggo and regggae, has me chanting, "Duke, Duke, Duke." They know about Dick Dale's flaunted Lebanese heritage and why some Creem reviewer once mentioned that early solo Eno "plays synthesizer like the Ventures."

There was a CD issue of the Shagrat stuff on Captain Trip - the rock stuff is really good but sounds kinda assy (and the CD transfer was too slow by a good amount which, being a nerd, I corrected for myself) and the acoustic stuff didn't really blow my mind. The electric songs definitely rule, though, "Boo! I Said Freeze" and "Peppermint Flickstick" would've made a great early Stiff single if they could've re-recorded it.

Spotify has that xpost Wildeflowers collection or something similar: mostly pretty good, somewhat dated tapes of promising mid-60s rock school kids, except Wyatt is *Wyatt* from the beginning; gives me chills a couple times, especially on the ballads-with-a-beat (emerging from the mists of that cover).
Still love xpost Plastic People's Egon Bondy's, with the tension of boldness & stealthiness: sounds like it was necessarily recorded in a castle at midnight, and at least some of it was (great booklet with the original LP, but I don't remember exact details). Their persecution was a motivation for Vaclav Havel's Charter 77 movement, which led the Velvet Revolution, named for its smoothness and for the Velvet Underground, heroes of Havel and the PP [who, despite their name, were not as much into Zappa as VU and Beefheart)(VU also popular in Czechoslovakia underground via association with homeboy Warhol).
I need to get into Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (mostly just know Neil Innes's work w Monty Python). Where should I start? Think Viv S. did some good album(s)?

the history of the bonzos comp is a good overview, but would really recommend the cornology boxset with the four original albums, the early seventies reunion (kind of patchy) & a bunch of extras... not sure if it's still in print but used to go for cheap. doughnut in granny's greenhouse and keynsham are my favourites. innes' pop brilliance + stanshall = genius!

never really come around to caravan, but only heard some of the 70s lps... need to check out their first two some day.

In terms of commercial 2015 releases, I've been especially into the recent Alva Noto, Tyondai Braxton, David Torn, and Boxhead Ensemble. That's what's top of mind (and iPod).

Getting to be pictures only, good thing I know most of these. But what the hell does Randy Burns sound like?? Now chasing Sunday dinner with Left Lane Cruiser's new Dirty Spliff Blues: garage-y no-muffler boogie, obv. they like ZZ Top's more agitated shuffles from the get-go, and 'round about "Tangled Up In Bush," started getting further into drones, sustain, eventually pedals: they also like Motorhead, prob Weedeater, maybe Parkay Quarts ("Skateboard Blues," eh?)

first randy burns (black & white cover) very much in the mid-sixties ny folk vein (very good eric andersen cover) just guitar/occasional second guitar/voice, though looking over its shoulder at the earlier paxton type thing. the green/white/red is song for an uncertain lady (his third? on esp-disk) full band & more psychish, kind of cut price pearls before swine maybe, but i like it. also have one of his later major label lps too (don't like that quite so much).

Randy Burns on ESP! Thought the name seemed almost familiar; I may have heard a track on one of their samplers--yeah, think I did, considering your description. Will have to seek it out, thanks (still catching up on the folk etc. folks on ESP, the ones who weren't in the Fugs or Holy Modal Rounders, that is).

Another xpost electric lunch break< with 37'58" more sustaining than a lot of double-LPs:
Sonic Praise, the 6/30 debut album offering of Ecstatic Vision. Philly souls are among those who already Know, but new to me.
"Journey" arrives with the droning sting of a dinosaur's tail, bass & drums bouncing and swaying over thee ancient dust of another Monday, replenished by well-timed injections: pedals and petals of guitar, keys, maybe a sax sometimes---obv. they like Hawkwind, with Lemmy-like throats.
"Astral Plane": better keep your butts in gear up here: "Look in the mirror and tell youself, space is the place to be....believe what you want to believe..." *What* a balancing act.
Somewhere in here (scribbled notes) is either "Everyday we work now behbeh," or is it "Everyday don't work"? Both? They both fit, over and under onslaughts/
"Don't Lose The Vibe," with an exclamation mark after each word in the chanted title.
Title song sounds like they also like bands with "Temple" in the name*, while getting further from the sludge appeal, kneeling on and rattling International Dateline---
"Crossing The Divide" puts it all back together, as Sasquatch drums reappear, bidding bobbing heads to rise and dance through aurora borealis (might be some buzzsaws working overtime in there).
*Bio sheet adds influences of Aprodites Child, Olatunji, Can, and early Amon Duul.

dlp9001, Saturday, 11 July 2015 19:15 (ten years ago)

I'm currently listening to: fuck all, and strangely, I'm very much enjoying it too.

I'm sure we've all suffered from this from time to time, but I think my ears are bit tired at the moment and I'm suffering from some sort of music listener's fatigue. Music in general is feeling like a bit of a pollutant to me and I'm getting no real kick out of any record I put on at the moment (this includes stone-cold classic, all-time favourite albums as well as newer releases), so I'm finding it necessary to take a bit of a break. I know exactly why this has happened, too - I've completely overdone it. I'm sure this happens to everyone, though.

Also, I think I've started to get a little bit overwhelmed keeping up with the constant stream of new releases coming out and balancing that with checking out older releases that are "new" to me, and I've often found myself thinking recently that I've heard all the music I could possibly want to hear. I'm sure that's horseshit, though, and in about a months time and after a small break I'll be back to my usual listening habits.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Saturday, 11 July 2015 19:45 (ten years ago)

Oh yeah, Novella---gets hard to sort out all the new releases, yeah---don't they sometimes sound a bit like Cocteau Twins and/or Philip Glass, in terms of overlapping, sort of hall of mirrors vocals---or am I thinking of somebody else?
That xpost Purling Hiss debut were good: wrote a show preview, a long time ago, favorably comparing it to the sound of a shook-up can of beer rolling through a high school gymnasium at a strange pep rally (or something like that).

that record is genuinely underrated. the surman one. nobody cares about it. so cool.

so uncared for it was still in its unopened shrink! really liked it... synths on the opening track are ominous as hell.

What's that John Cage split LP sound like?

dow, Monday, 28 September 2015 17:36 (nine years ago)

cage side is pieces from the forties. very minimal: piano, percussion (richard bernas) & voice (via carla bley & robert wyatt), words by ee cummings/joyce. the steele side is good too, but don't listen to it quite as much as the cage.

The first Little Feat record cover is definitely one that loses a bunch when shrunk down to a CD. I always thought it was a pretty hip cover.

earlnash, Saturday, 3 October 2015 03:28 (nine years ago)

i've always liked it. imagine it must be pretty hard to distinguish who's who on the cd cover.

been playing billy strange, shackletons, folkswingers, dillards, kentucky colonels and now...

Probably easy to confuse that Little Feat with the Earth 2 cover when its cd sized.

Absolutely recommend buying this on CD for the extra album's worth of bonus tracks that all rock as hard and dumb as the original album. These dudes were consistent and got busy thoroughly and proactively.

The CAPTCHA solution on tinypic was "Learn About DXM" for what it's worth.

Wish this would get the remaster it deserves. Have it on a better needeledrop set of MP3s than the needledrop that the Radioactive version came from or so I hear.
I think that umbrella group are still reissuing it, not sure what name of label is these days buit did hear they had just stuck it back out a few months ago. Has it been remastered since the radioactive version though?

Just been hoping somebody like Sunbeam or Esoteric would pick it up though and do it decently.

It seems to have some interesting corners in the sound that I would love hearing with more clarity.
Also got to kick myself for not picking it up on vinyl in the early 80s when I saw it, though not sure what I would have made of it back then.

Ruth Garbus - Rendezvous With Rama

Milton Parker, Tuesday, 17 November 2015 22:53 (nine years ago)

lots of Stravinsky, Bartok and Ligeti

Stravinsky - the Greek ballets (Craft leading Apollo, Orpheus, Agon), of which Agon is my favorite. All of these are more gentle than you might think of for Stravinsky, and they also flirt with (or sometimes dive headfirst into) serial composition. Agon, which actually has the most 12-tone stuff, is the prettiest, and most gentle. This guy's pretty good.

Bartok - string quartets (Takacs) and piano concertos. The 1979 recordings I have of the piano concertos are pretty cool, because it's obvious the mix favors the piano, and the orchestra (Chicago under Abbado) is kept in its rightfully supportive place.

Ligeti - pretty much all the Ligeti Project CDs on Teldec. Obv his 60s orchestral pieces, and Lontano from '72 are amazing, but "Clocks and Clouds" impressed me for its restraint (and faint bonds with both minimalism and spectralism), and his Violin Concerto is amazing. I don't know any other composers who orchestrate like him -- quite clearly coming from the tradition of Bartok and Stravinsky in the way he uses and accentuates rhythm, but so much more complex, expanded, that it seems almost inhuman. And yet it's still a really fun/exciting piece to hear, almost like a chase scene!

Gun Club Apeldoorn April 83. Band with JIm Duckworth and Dee Pop in. I don't think I really like Pop with the GC, here he's really thuddy and on other live sets he's too busy. But Duckworth was one of the best guitarists they ever had. Shame there isn't more of him around on disc really.

"wythe duet" steve gunn / john truscinski

reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 21 November 2015 22:23 (nine years ago)

'Vibrate On' & 'Vibrate' are amazing tracks off this disk of Arkology. Most discs where you put the same track right after the last one kinda blows as a sequence, not in this case.

Arkology was a needed set back when it was new, as Perry's output at that point was all over the place and lot of the Jamaican sides were not as easy to get (at least in the US). I think it's success led to there being a plethora of Singles comps with the early stuff by Perry and other dub artists coming out.

earlnash, Saturday, 21 November 2015 22:52 (nine years ago)

Kinda wild to think that Arkology is now 18 years old!

earlnash, Saturday, 21 November 2015 22:53 (nine years ago)

There are still a few tracks on Arkology I have a hard time finding elsewhere but it's probably an issue of them having multiple variations on "artist name - title name"

which I found in the local HMV last night. Still not heard their first one though.
& now trying to remember if I was actually looking for something by these when i saw it or just chanced upon it while looking for something else. I think it might just be alittle obscure to expect to find in that shop but they do turn up some very interesting unexpected things still if you look around.

wasn't expecting too much from this, but it's pretty decent dutch bop. drummer was in a trio that had an lp out on esp-disk that i've never heard... also a member of group 1850 for awhile.

A live set by Matt Berry that was on Dime a couple of months back.
The one studio lp I have by him is pretty good too.
