Might as well start it early this year.

TRACKS (they've been released 2014 online but are from TBA 2015 albums)
Tame Impala - Sitting Up On Our Crane
LION BABE - Jump Hi
JUCE - Call you out
Shura - Touch

(Are capitalized band names the stupid hip trend for 2015?)

Welcomed and Unwelcomed returns that we can expect this year:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_2015_albums

Moka, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:11 (ten years ago)

"Touch" already feels a million years old to me, but will be glad to hear a Shura album this year if it materializes.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:17 (ten years ago)

She also has a couple other songs on her soundcloud if you're tired of Touch.

Moka, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:22 (ten years ago)

Yeah, those are okay, but there's a definite dropoff from "Touch".

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:25 (ten years ago)

Rae Morris's "Under the Shadows" is doing it for me. I love songs with that galloping "Running Up That Hill" beat.

https://soundcloud.com/raemorris/under-the-shadows

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:28 (ten years ago)

i don't think just because a band spells their name in ALL CAPS on social media that we do too

lex pretend, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:38 (ten years ago)

Yeah, I refuse to perpetuate this silliness. I only indulge tUnE-yArDs's bullshit because I like some of her songs.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:40 (ten years ago)

who was the first band to do the dumb caps thing? fIREHOSE?

Ottbot jr (NickB), Sunday, 4 January 2015 23:42 (ten years ago)

Been playing this one all morning but I can't seem to find any release for this one so I'm assuming it will be released this year:

Max Frost - Let Me Down Easy

Moka, Tuesday, 6 January 2015 23:52 (ten years ago)

Wasn't "Call You Out" last year? I heard it months ago.

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Tuesday, 6 January 2015 23:55 (ten years ago)

Read, son.

Dinsdale, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 19:28 (ten years ago)

Kinda weirded out by the 'Eddie Vedder goes indie' vibe on some tracks though.

One playlist I follow already has 330 songs in it.

― Johnny Fever

lol, I don't even have that many songs in my 2014 one. Full albums in there or what?

the QT conundrum (Moka), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 23:31 (ten years ago)

Nope, individual tracks. It's hardly all to my taste, but it's a good way to spend a few minutes each night sampling the new additions.

His 2014 playlist (which is still being added to) has almost 7,300 songs in it:

Wow. What? that's 20 days of music!

Nice find, there's many stuff I miss every year but this guy seems to pick everything thrown his way. Must be unemployed.

the QT conundrum (Moka), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 23:44 (ten years ago)

Call You Out is 2014 for me. I listened to that Neu Balance album(/EP?) once but nothing registered. I like the Panda Bear album. Not sure about B+S yet. That's probably all the 2015 I've heard so far!

seandalai, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 23:50 (ten years ago)

Yeah im keeping juce and shura on that list to remind me to check out their 2015 release. I'm afraid I'll forget if I don't have them around. I had shamir and lion babe in there but it seems like they are pretty popular already so if they release anything worthwhile this year I think the world will let me know.

the QT conundrum (Moka), Thursday, 22 January 2015 00:07 (ten years ago)

Some albums I rate in 2015:

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - Euclid

Jasmine Guffond - Yellow Bell
Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter 3: River Run Thee
Kath Bloom - Pass Through Here

William Ryan Fritch - Revisionist

kriss akabusi cleaner (seandalai), Friday, 20 February 2015 21:21 (ten years ago)

Favorite albums of the year so far, all of six or seven weeks into 2015:

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: Euclid (her album Tides is also very good)
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma: A Year with 13 Moons
Andrew Bird: Echolocations
Jose Gonzalez: Vestiges & Claws

I like the Bjork album too but haven't spent a lot of time with it. Her intensity does not exactly sync up with where I'm at mentally at the moment.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Saturday, 21 February 2015 17:55 (ten years ago)

Well if we're making lists...

Ryley Walker: Primrose Green

Misþyrming: Söngvar elds og óreiðu
LabField: Bucket of Songs
Noveller: Fantastic Planet
*AR: Diagrams for the Summoning of Wolves
Eric Chenaux: Skullsplitter

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a few album selections) are being posted as updated to a thread-specific Spotify playlist that I'm maintaining. I just did a quick sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.

That playlist is currently four hours of music and is clickable below. Give it a spin and subscribe if you want to listen along through the year.

Didn't get my act together for end of first quarter so here's a first third re-cap. Albums are mostly the same as everyone else's (Kendrick and Dawn way out in front, then Kaitlyn, Dan Deacon, Aphex Twin, Jazmine, JLin, Bjork, etc), so here's a top 32 tracks so far, very roughly in order:

Jazmine Sullivan - Mascara
Dawn Richard - The Deep / Blackheart (outro)
Lianne La Havas - Unstoppable
Kendrick Lamar - The Blacker the Berry
The Pattern Forms - The Sacrifice
Nicki Minaj feat. Drake & Lil Wayne - Truffle Butter
Scritti Politti - untitled
Laetitia Sadier - Lost and Found
Red Velvet - Ice Cream Cake
Tink - Ratchet Commandments
Maya Vik - Y.M.D. (Young Michael Douglas)
Grimes & Bleachers - Entropy
Grimes - REALiTi
Cabane with Bonnie “Prince” Billy - Sangokaku
Susanne Sundfør - Fade Away
Lindstrøm feat. Grace Hall - Home Tonight
Laura Groves - Dream Story
Dan Lissvik - Shuvit!
DJ Fresh feat. Ella Eyre - Gravity
Ibeyi - River
Giorgio Tuma with Laetitia Sadier - Through Your Hands Love Can Shine
Kendrick Lamar feat. James Fauntleroy & Ronald Isley - How Much A Dollar Cost?
Carly Rae Jepsen - I Really Like You
Robot Koch feat. Born In Flamez & Curtain Blue - Let Me
Badbadnotgood & Ghostface Killah - Gunshowers (feat. Elzhi) / Stark’s Reality
JLin - Abnormal Restriction
Margaret Cho & Princess Superstar - My Booty Is Efficient!
Tinashe feat. Travi$ Scott - Vulnerable
Ellen Allien - Butterfly (Aux88’s Electric Butterfly Remix)
Maya Vik - Young As This Night
Natalie Prass - Why Don’t You Believe In Me?
M. Geddes Gengras - III (from “3 Impressions” EP)

my album of the last couple of years. they are getting better and better,

have been stuck between 1858 and 1958 a lot recently but have still heard some good new stuff as well.

Susan Alcorn - Soledad (steel pedal guitar player who makes music to look at the stars to)
Orchestra Omar - S/t (multinational middle eastern psyche/noise band)

the orchestra omar sounds great - doesn't look like anyone has issued it in the US yet tho :(

Mordy, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 23:49 (ten years ago)

I want to buy it myself because the scratchy, jumpy vinyl rip I got off slsk does detract from it's qualities somewhat, so throw up a link if you do manage to buy it.

he has the best one! The part at the end where he speeds up his flow is great. Always think the beat's missing something though.

As for the topic, lately I like about half of the new Tyler, the Creator album, mainly cuz it's his best Neptunes/N.E.R.D imitation production to date

Wolf Alice - Giant Peach, though the vocals sound better on this studio live version is better. Her voice is good for the material they play, so I don't see the point in altering it so much.

Also enjoying Flava D's More Love album.

i like wolf alice a lot

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 May 2015 17:18 (ten years ago)

I am SO SEETHING MAD at Wolf Alice, not that they re-recorded their best song "Bros" and diminished its quality by half, but that they've scrubbed the internet of the original 7" version so that the new one is the only one people can hear.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 14 May 2015 17:24 (ten years ago)

the difference between "bros" is not that deep imo but i get you

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 14 May 2015 17:30 (ten years ago)

I forget what the other version of Bros sounded like, but I don't like the new one as much. I'm also nervous that they keep stressing how pop the new album is going to be, because I think I like their more rocking songs the best. But maybe things will fall into place once the album is released next month. I hope so.

THEESatisfaction - EarthEE: More (better) wobbly leftfield hip hop from this NW duo. Don't listen often, but it makes a real impact when I do.
Warm Brew - Ghetto Beach Boyz: Throwback rap. Good times.
Maya Vik - Beyond the Basics: Part compilation, part new material. She can keep re-releasing "Oslo Knows" from now through the end of time and I'd be all good with that.
Marina and The Diamonds - FROOT: Marina's 3rd is her most consistent, and there are enough high points here to rival her intital run of singles in 2008/09/10.
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp a Butterfly: This has been out now for 3 months and it'll probably take me another 6 to fuily process everything about it (if I ever can).
Andy Gabbard - Fluff: Throwback guitar rock with a particular focus on scruffy-but-smart 90s styles. Particularly The Posies and early Fanclub.
Donnie Trumpet and The Social Experiment - Surf: I still think of this as a Chance the Rapper album even if it's not. Even when he's not on a track, though, it's thick with joy.
Susanne Sundfør - Ten Love Songs: Super-ambitious Scandipop. Too much or too little is made of the ABBA influence, but I think she got it right. "Delirious" is my most-played song of the year.
Venera 4 - Eidôlon: This is the best shoegaze record since SVIIB's Disconnect From Desire five years ago, and it's the realest sounding shoegaze record since 1990.
Soko - My Dreams Dictate My Reality: Soko has been bouncing around since the late 00s, but she's finally got an album that was worth the wait. Fun post-punk pop with a French touch.
KenJaNai - Faceless Heroes: This is largely a beat tape, but it also features a couple fleshed out songs with guest vocals. Perfect for turning on and dropping out.
Tove Styrke - Kiddo: While it's true I only heard this today for the first time, much of it had already been teased out as singles. The songs that weren't are equally strong. It's too good.
Methyl Ethel - Oh Inhuman Spectacle: Australian trio making sometimes meditative, sometimes jangly guitar rock with an androgynous voice on the mic.
Kid Wave - Wonderlust: Perfect guitar pop with a few 90s ghosts. Wolf Alice could've turned into this band, but they decided not too. Glad Kid Wave picked up the baton.
Lower Dens - Escape From Evil: Nootropics was cool, but a little opaque for me. The grooves and melodies here are right up front and they're wonderful.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 14 June 2015 04:48 (ten years ago)

Checking out this Kid Wave album and it seems vastly more common and unexciting than Wolf Alice, but perfect guitar pop is not my thing. There's nothing in the contours of these songs to draw me in. Are there any tracks you recommend as particular standouts?

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 14 June 2015 14:05 (ten years ago)

If anything, Wolf Alice seems to be becoming more of a (zzzzz) "perfect guitar pop" band with things like their remake of Bros! Bros is kind of snoozy and "You're a Germ" sounds a little too demo-ish for me. Giant Peach and Moaning Lisa Smile, on the other hand, seem exceptional to me.

This album came out at the end of 2014, but is being reissued by Heavenly Recordings for release in May because it's phenomenal and likely didn't get a wide release by its very small Welsh label. I think many of you will love it. I was personally blown away by it and didn't expect much considering who's behind it.

Gwenno - Y Dydd Olaf

In a period of governmental and cultural revolution, former Pipettes front-woman, GWENNO, releases a political concept album inspired by an obscure 1970s Welsh language sci-fi novel, subtly disguised as a blissful kraut-pop record.

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a handful of album selections from each listed) are being posted as updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist. I just did a second, top-to-bottom sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned.... now with extra Björk!
It's 385 tracks and over 24 hours of continuous ILX approved music.
Halfway into the year, here are the memorable frontrunners.

My favorite albums of the year so far, in no order:

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith: Euclid
Jefre Cantu-Ledesma: A Year with 13 Moons
Jose Gonzalez: Vestiges & Claws
Sam Prekop: The Republic
Jane Weaver: The Amber Light

All of these albums are great though I've yet to hit an album this year that I've become truly obsessed with - the kind that squeezes everything else out.

My favourite albums of the year would be too boring to list--I'm having a disappointingly consensus-y year thus far--but my vaguely ordered Top 20 fave tracks list would look something like this:

Miguel, “Coffee”
Sevyn Streeter, “4th Street”
Bjork, “Stonemilker”
St. Vincent, “Teenage Talk”
Kendrick Lamar, “King Kunta”
Sleater-Kinney, “A New Wave”
Dead Sara, “Something Good”
Prince, “Baltimore”
Brandi Carlile, “Murder in the City”
Courtney Barnett, “Pedestrian at Best”
Jasmine Sullivan, “Mascara”
The Mountain Goats, “Animal Mask″
Belle and Sebastian, “Nobody’s Empire”
For Esme, “Just Yet”
Camp Claude, “Blow”
Justine Skye, “A Train”
Of Verona, “Stay Gold”
Rap Monster, “Do You”
Jeremih ft. J. Cole, “Planes”
Sunrise Device, “Tonight”

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Friday, 3 July 2015 18:53 (ten years ago)

The Firewatcher's Daughter is the first Brandi Carlile album I've ever really gotten into, and "Murder in the City" is a great song. It's really all about "The Eye" for me, though.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 3 July 2015 19:05 (ten years ago)

I liked "The Eye" as well, but the album as a whole (the first I've heard from her) still hasn't clicked with me. I find most of it just kind of men, but "Mainstream Kid" is as cringeworthy as "Murder in the City" is moving.

*meh

The New Gay Sadness (cryptosicko), Friday, 3 July 2015 19:09 (ten years ago)

"Murder in the City" was originally an Avett Brothers tune but it's much more bracing (for an obvious reason) to hear a female voice sing it, nice arrangement too

Norwegian power pop/indie/lite psych band The Switch just dropped their third release in little over a year, an EP by the name of We're Fooling No One, the title track of which I can't stop listening to:

Rangleklods - Straightjacket

I'm very hooked on "Lost U" at this point. I haven't yet made it through the whole album though. There's something about the type of spoken sample and the way it's used that reminds me very much of 88-91. The music does that as well, but it's striking to me how much the use of that sample sounds retro in itself, to me anyway.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 15:10 (ten years ago)

found the rangleklods record gets better with every listen imo

the A$AP album, really?

Number None, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

There are a couple instances on the Rangleklods record where the synth choices rub me the wrong way, but overall it's one of most-unlike-anything-else albums I've heard all year. A lot of artists and bands I can constantly say "ok, I see what you did there." Rangleklods just kind of erupt from their own id.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

Rangleklods album = if The XX decided not to go even more mopey on that 2nd album but added some sex and danger instead

I have only had a quick listen to the new VFTL one and am not really feeling it, as much as I loved their last album I don't think the live alb format plays to their strengths at all. the Seraphim Rytm album hits the same spots as first VFTL one in places and can be quite mesmerising or equally tedious, depending on what kind of mood or state you are in.

Matthew Shipp Chamber Ensemble - Gospel According to Matthew & Michael

Only listened to this once, but it's got that current Matthew Shipp sound I like every time.

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 29 July 2015 12:46 (ten years ago)

Actually this is a bit less accessible than his last few releases. He sounds like himself, but the overall ensemble ends up being even closer to the modern classical end of the spectrum than Elastic Aspects (which is the recent release closest to this one, at least among the ones I've heard). It ends up being darker.

I still like it, but I think my description was misleading. It's probably a little too dark for me to listen to as often as I have Elastic Aspects, Piano Sutras, or I've Been to Many Places.

I was never a mega-fan in the past, but the Veruca Salt album is just a really solid almost power-pop album. It's not my favorite release of 2015, but it is the most played.

http://rest30records.bandcamp.com/album/jazz-jaguars-twilite -- local (salt lake city) act, been around for a couple decades (in a dozen forms) David Payne is the one constant/songwriter, he's an excellent player. a number of covers here, well relaxed, recorded in a bar setting. it's worth searching out the older Red Bennies ablums, as they rocked powerfully/formidable.

This is a quick, third-quarter reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and/or an album selection from each listed) are being updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist as posted. I just did another (painfully meticulous, three day) top-to-bottom sweep prior to posting this message and have revised as of today with everything that's been added since first mentioned. Subscribe if you're into it and let me know if I've missed a track that's available in the US.

This is the one-stop-shopping playlist to queue up: It's about 860 tracks and over two and a half days long.

Kind of obsessed with this Boss Selection track that features Rashida Jones on vocals. There's something very "Thriller"=ish at the heart of it, but much more laid back.

This is still my favourite song qua song of 2015.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:03 (nine years ago)

Might add these two (p4k approved TM) into the mix:

Mt. Eerie - Sauna
Deerhunter - Fading Frontier

And in the obligatory drone/experimental albums I add each year this is my favorite one so faR:

Matana Roberts - Coin Coin Chapter Three: River Run Thee

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:04 (nine years ago)

Matana Roberts sounds like Throbbing Gristle feat. Nico so if that sounds like something that could be interesting to hear I recommend it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:06 (nine years ago)

Some friends keep wanting me to hear the Carly Rae Jepsen album. Not sure if I should. What say you ILM?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:08 (nine years ago)

And I forgot Colin Stetson I'm a sucker for everything he puts out each year.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 22:09 (nine years ago)

How does it compare to Chapter Two?

― EveningStar (Sund4r),

To be honest this is the first Matana Roberts album I hear. A friend sent it to me a month ago on spotify and I loved it.

Gabi, Colleen and Julia Holter are all still way out there in front for me. I do feel like I've taken my eye off the ball a bit over the last few months though.

I need to listen to these. I'm a fan of previous things they've done.

Austin, Tuesday, 10 November 2015 23:03 (nine years ago)

Funny old year for me. As ever, I suspect I'll spend much of 2016 discovering and digesting lots of great stuff I didn't get round to in 2015.
Last year my listening was largely taken up by modern jazz, Joni Mitchell and a style I can only describe as 'body-horror ambient' centring around people like Gazelle Twin and Holly Herndon.
This year among other things, it's been about afrobeats, trap and 80s boogie.
But what with my computer dying at almost the same time I decided to move across the country and start a new job, I haven't had as much of a chance to listen to new things these last couple of months. It's been a fairly welcome break. I've had time to concentrate on other things.

So for my own reference more than anything else, here's a breakdown of stuff I heard this year in vague categories:

BONA FIDE GREAT ALBUMS I'LL VOTE FOR IN EOY:
Domenique Dumont - Comme ça
Algiers - Algiers
Miami Horror - All Possible Futures
Vince Staples - Summertime '06
Kendrick Lamar - To Pimp A Butterfly
Carly Rae Jepsen - Emotion

THINGS I LIKE A LOT
Future - Beast Mode
John Tejada - Signs Under Test
Mumdance - Fabriclive 80
Ciara - Jackie
Follakzoid - III
Rae Sremmurd - SremmLife
Jlin - Dark Energy

STUFF THAT IS INTERESTING OR HAS A FEW STANDOUT MOMENTS WORTH GOING BACK TO
Young Thug - Barter 6
Hama - Torodi
Blanck Mass - Dumb Flesh
Ata Kak - Obaa Sima
Future - DS2 & 56 Nights
courtney barnett - sometimes i sit and think
Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment - Surf
Nozinja - Nozinja Lodge
High Wolf - Growing Wild
Squarepusher - Damogen Furies

THINGS I NEED TO SPEND MORE TIME WITH
Ace Hood- Starvation 4
Young Thug - Slime Season 1 & 2
Lonelady - Hinterland
Ought - Sun Coming Down
M.E.S.H. - Piteous Gate
Mbongwana Star - From Kinshasa
Snoop Dogg & LBC Movement - Beach City
Diddy - MMM
Emily King - The Switch
Susanne Sundfør, Ten Love Songs
Destroyer - Poison Season
Bizz-E BlazE - Bizz-arre
Susanne Sundfor - Ten Love Songs
Tame Impala - Currents
Napalm Death - Apex Predator Easy Meat
Jenny Hval - Apocalypse, Girl
Holly Herndon - Platform
Other Lives - Reconfiguration

STUFF I NEED TO CHECK OUT BEFORE EOY
Bjork - Vulnicura
Laurel Halo - In Situ
HNNY - Sunday
Unknown Mortal Orchestra - Multi Love
Fuzz - II
Rabit - Communion
Dam Funk - Invite The Light

I've started working for a commercial radio station and have to endure that 'Let's Marvin Gaye And Get It On' song approximately 34 times a week. Everyone involved in that song deserves to be run over.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 November 2015 23:58 (nine years ago)

In other news, I checked out an album by this hipster-rap act called Dead Language this morning and while the production was good, the guy rapping was pretty cackers. I dunno, I don't bother listening to music I don't like. There's stuff I wish was better - bit underwhelmed by the Ought album cos I loved their debut, but maybe I need ot give it more time?

canoon fooder (dog latin), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 00:01 (nine years ago)

For a moment there I thought you were dissing on Marvin Gaye and I was liike what!?

Have no idea what song that is but I assume I'm better off without it.

Matana Roberts sounds like Throbbing Gristle feat. Nico so if that sounds like something that could be interesting to hear I recommend it.

The Matchess album sounds a bit like Suicide feat. Nico btw, so i guess we could swap recommendations.

Matchess - Somnaphoria

I've been listening to this and it's amazing! Great recommendation chirea, this is just my kind of album! I'll keep listening to it since it's too early to tell but at first spin it sounds like one of the best things I've heard this year. Record is like a long surreal trip I was listening while working and had to stop working because I couldn't focus.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 20:15 (nine years ago)

Yes, my priorities are in place.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 11 November 2015 20:16 (nine years ago)

also I didn't have high hopes for it but the Carly Rae Jepsen actually has some incredible production. Kind of a weird album to listen after Matchess but this is also oddly engrossing. The production is first level, whichever producer(s) is/are behind this you can tell they are worth the buck.

What are these like?
― ✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, November 11, 2015 8:07 PM (Yesterday)

One's jazz, the other's country. Which is odd, because I'm not a big listener of either. Then again, several more committed jazz listeners posting on the Kamasi Washington thread haven't been much impressed, and Ashley Monroe hasn't made much headway in more mainstream country circles.

Kamasi's album is sprawling, maximalist and very long. Ashley's album is concise and measured. I've watched concerts from both on YouTube. Kamasi's was an explosion of joy which brought me further into his music; Ashley's was disappointingly short on emotion, and it put me off her album for a bit, although I've since recovered.

There are faults with Kamasi's album, but they don't stop me loving it; I don't necessarily require perfection. Meanwhile, what I like best about Ashley's is the classic songcraft; ideas clearly expressed, with indelible melodies.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 12 November 2015 17:38 (nine years ago)

Kamasi is a sprawling banquet, Ashley is more a down-home meal.

aaah I'm sorry to post so much but the new Meridian Brothers album is awesome

https://www.ableton.com/en/blog/sounds-in-context-meridian-brothers/

It's a project dedicated to the organ. I was inspired by the ambient Hammond organists in Latin America, a style that developed in parallel to easy listening music genres in 60’s & 70’s. Organists from Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Panamá and Brazil developed a remarkable style performing with backing bands that played traditional instruments, with the organ as the central instrument – in some cases achieving really beautiful results. A sub-genre of organ cumbia was created also. This music is still played at some of the "sonideros" parties in Mexico and is very popular in Ecuador.

Starting from some of these records, I decided to investigate this style, using the timbre of the organ, but developing the style further and turning it into a kind of "impossible organ" music – a kind of un-easy listening. I used the same background instrumentation as was used in some of the tunes I was inspired by: double bass pizzicato, jazz-like drums and the organ (using software and hardware synthesizers). Occasionally, I also used drum machines and other electronic sounds. Because it's very difficult to play it on the organ alone, I used the sequencing capabilities of Ableton Live and Max for Live in order to achieve this "impossible" sound I wanted.

TRACKS

Róisín Murphy - "House of Glass (Maurice Fulton remix)" HOLY BABY JESUS IN THE MANGER THIS IS AMAZING

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Monday, 7 December 2015 05:08 (nine years ago)

Speaking of Maurice Fulton, his 2015 album The Hydrangeas Whisper (spotify) under the alias Boof was worth a listen, though it doesn't cohere. Separate EPs of the minimal/stern odd-numbered tracks and of the more funky even-numbered ones would have worked better.

Can I start campaigning to count Nicolas Jaar's Nymphs I-IV as an Album? Because, as such, it's sitting comfortably in my 2015 top 10.

fka styx (paul santa cruz), Monday, 7 December 2015 20:24 (nine years ago)

some stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet:

albums
Astrobrite - Deluxer
Kali Uchis - Por Vida EP
Mary Halvorson - Meltframe
The Amazing - Picture You
Celer & Nicholas Szczepanik - Here, for now

tracks:
GEoRGiA - "Heart Wrecking Animals"

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Monday, 7 December 2015 20:34 (nine years ago)

are The Amazing discussed anywhere on ilm? i really like their last record ('gentle stream') and it feels like it could have been a ILM Thing in some parallel universe but they're kind of hard to search for

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2015 20:55 (nine years ago)

i'll have to listen to the new one now too i guess

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2015 20:56 (nine years ago)

they've been mentioned here a few times, but mellow reverbed-out indie dreampop is (understandably) not going to make much of a splash on ilm in 2015

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Monday, 7 December 2015 22:45 (nine years ago)

idk if i'd characterize what i've heard as indie dreampop, it's more like jackson browne crossed with some of the stuff on the post-fahey thread

ciderpress, Monday, 7 December 2015 23:26 (nine years ago)

hmm, interesting reference points. the best comparisons I can come up with are the second Telescopes album (which is itself a blend of shoegaze and Fairportsy folk-rock) and Midlake, and I don't hear as much of a direct classic rock/folk influence as some people seem to. Picture You has a few more loud feedbacky guitar passages than Gentle Stream (expecially on 'Safe Island') but overall it's not drastically different from every other Amazing album. I still feel like this sort of thing is anathema to ilm's current sensibilities, but I'd be happy to be proven wrong.

scarlett bohansson (unregistered), Monday, 7 December 2015 23:57 (nine years ago)

Listening to "Picture You" now, it sounds a lot like Real Estate.

I like Picture You a lot

it's really excellent tho. have u heard the Ami Shavit - In Alpha Mood album? 1977 release; for some reason the two feel like a pair for me this year

Mordy, Thursday, 10 December 2015 15:41 (nine years ago)

Both of those are great!

a cruet of destiny (seandalai), Thursday, 10 December 2015 18:35 (nine years ago)

The only albums from this year that I've really enjoyed are

Colleen - Captain Of None
Jlin - Dark Energy
Julia Holter - Have You In My Wilderness
Rabit - Communion
Visionist - Safe

I'm surprised the Visionist album hasn't been on more EOY lists, because it's brilliant

paolo, Thursday, 10 December 2015 18:37 (nine years ago)

Picture You album is definitely one my favorites this year.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Friday, 18 December 2015 02:28 (nine years ago)

Hmmm, late discovery. The Kickback (Spoon's Jim Eno=producer) - "Headhunter" (from album Sorry All Over The Place). Hadn't heard a thing about these angular pop guys, though apparently they've been kicking around for years before recording their debut.

dlp9001, Friday, 18 December 2015 02:50 (nine years ago)

Here's a link to a playlist of my favorite tracks of the year: http://open.spotify.com/user/scottpgwp/playlist/7ilAqzxqmsAQ8xGcozIWce

Not ranked, but rather ordered as a pleasurable listening experience. Some obvious stuff (Tame Impala, Kurt Vile, Bjork), and perhaps some less obvious stuff (Jonas Munk, C. Duncan, Roedelius)--also people don't seem to have noticed that Radio Dept released some great singles this year, and the Walkmen essentially reformed without calling themselves the Walkmen.

Can i just say how much i love music's diversity... both the artistic field and the ILX collective's groupmind? We're a few days away from the end of the year and here's a list of new music that mostly hasn't been mentioned prior... not just on this thread but ANY of the genre threads! It is, to relocate the old proverb about chess, a river from which a flea may sip or an elephant may quench its thirst.

Does that make you mutter, under your breath, “Damn”? (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 27 December 2015 19:36 (nine years ago)

hey maarten, you should nominate a bunch of those for the ILM EOY poll (and then vote for them!)

I genuinely don't have it in me to comb through this thread to clean it up so I'm wrapping it up for the year. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.

Ha, I had no clue on either front, so appreciate the news. I was thinking about Radio Dept recently, seems like ages ago since their last album.
