This is from last month, but I just discovered it... If we're talking about this kind of breezy dance-pop in this part of the world, it usually comes from Sweden, so I was genuinely surprised this is from Finland. Though apparently Ronya is half Finnish-Swedish, half British, which I guess might explain it... Anyway, I just love the whole arrangement on this tune, there's all these lovely tiny details but absolutely nothing extra, taking away any of those elements would diminish the tune.

ugh, why is paul mccartney on another pop single in 2015.
i'm usually ok with rihanna's voice but it sounds like nails on a chalkboard on this. the song's style doesn't suit her at all.
― prolego, Sunday, 25 January 2015 01:02 (ten years ago)
That Susanne Sundfør song is amazing. I think it probably needs a radio edit to trim that first minute down to a few seconds, but man, that moment when the harmony kicks in at the end of "I hope you have a safety net / 'Cause I'm gonna push you over the edge" has, it seems to me, world-dominating pop potential.

Not really seeing the Yours Truly comparison aside from Everlasting Love and Sugar Mama. Both of those are pretty good too. I think I like the Mariah Carey song.
Reflection is the best song on the album. The reveal of "i'm talking to my own reflection" made me smile. And it's the only RnBass-influenced song on the record that is halfway decent.
Already enjoyed BO$$ and Them Girls Be Like.

I'm happy people are digging Susanne's album, perhaps her best, although some earlier singles are unbeatable.
You had to be here to understand how instantly ubiquitous her music became when she debuted in 2007, with the most airplay of any artist that year. Of course that album was very different, more of a straightforward singer songwriter production with several v radio friendly tunes:

blogger, Nialler 9 has a superb review
Album of the week: Le Galaxie – Le Clubhttp://nialler9.com/album-of-the-week-le-galaxie-le-club/
The music is still aesthetically ’80s-referencing neon-electro, but with more peaks and troughs (aided by clear cut physically-felt mixing by sometime DFA/LCD engineer Eric Brouchek). ......
Even when the music does overtly sound like an alternative soundtrack to Back To The Future, French electro or the night-time street theatre of Drive, it is always fun, transportive and designed to make you move. And, this time around there’s an increasing sense of occasion.
Le Club is a rare thing, an album of joyous bangers that works in any environment, le club, the festival and your headphones.
another review:
Le Galaxie – Le Clubhttp://thelastmixedtape.com/2015/04/28/le-galaxie-le-club/
Le Club is an album about excess. The length, the production, the sound, the stylization, the atmosphere of the record is extravagantly bold. Beats, synth lines and vocals are thrust into a dominating foreground that insists itself upon the listener from beginning to end. The entire record buzzes with excitement, rarely pausing for breath.......
Brilliantly bold and true to its convictions Le Club is an album of pure kinetic energy. The album conveys abandon, limitless creativity and invention all held together by Le Galaxie’s daring ambition. It’s not perfect, at times it is down right messy, but as with all excess that seems to be the point.
the album has 14 tracks, i have selected 5 tracks to be added to the thread spotify playlist:
Le Galaxie - Put the Chain Onhttps://open.spotify.com/track/2YNC4jczfVTnf3w3yJmkoX

Does pop here mean "hit" and/or "Top 40"? If so, I like the current Weekend and Ne-Yo/Pitbull songs a lot, something increasingly rare for me these days. If this belongs on another thread, sorry, I'll know next time.

DUDE the hilary duff album just leaked and i just finished it and it's actually pretty good! the first 3-4 tracks make for a strong opener, and the duet here is a rare one in that it's actually pretty great and essential. i suggest y'all give it a listen!
― j. winters (josh), Friday, 12 June 2015 05:51 (ten years ago)
i like the duet a lot despite his awful voice. lindy robbins writes such good melodies."my kind" was my fave even though it's just a weaker version of becky g's "can't stop dancing". sucker for that vibe"breathe in. breathe out.", "arms around a memory" and "brave heart" are also all pretty good. everything else seemed pretty tragic?
adam lambert's new album is fucking incredible to me btw. mostly serious-face-pop but just sooooo well done ("another lonely night" is like the best thing i've ever heard; love the sheer drama of "rumors"). hooks on top of hooks. and then the closing bonus track "these boys" goes against that vibe entirely and it's soooo exuberant and groovy and i want to dance to it forever
― uberweiss, Friday, 12 June 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)
also "after hours" could've been on the xx's first album & i love it

They should make an album together. Unfortunately I haven't dug releases from either for a while.. I basically just want Inna to go back to her slightly generic romanian pop roots. Those early albums were great.

This is a quick, quarterly reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a handful of album selections from each listed) are being posted as updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist. I just did a second, top-to-bottom sweep prior to posting this message and updated as of today with everything that's been added on Spotify since it was first mentioned... found about ten or fifteen new tracks for the mix. It's 60+ songs for over 4 hours of the year's chewiest pop.

a sort of Norwegian Tinashe remixed in a tropical house meets euro dance-pop sound that somehow works addictively well:

Samsaya first came across my radar in 2013 with her single "Stereotype," but now the whole album is finally here and it's kind of charming in a lot of ways (and annoying in others). She's definitely a fan of Gwen Stefani, but she's not flying that flag on every track.
(Also, I guess her first album came out in 2004? That's an insanely long break between debut and sophomore albums.)
― Johnny Fever, Sunday, 26 July 2015 07:23 (ten years ago)
I couldn't make it through the whole Samsaya album as i found the charm / annoying ratio to be a little heavily weighted towards the latter but might give it another go.

i am glad i was wrong about whether lunchmoney lewis's "bills" was going to be a hit in the us
but here is a new one from him. it is very flo rida-wave -- verses with dumb lyrics + heavy-duty chorus -- but i think it mostly works b/c the hook is quite happy-sounding and not so heavy-handedly gimmicky. the nod to old miami bass in one of the bridges is also used to decent effect, which i think flo also did on one or two of his subpar singles from his first album lol

So Popjustice are raving about this Grace Mitchell track, "Jitter". The song is kind of a schizophrenic mess and that includes Mitchell's singing who, at times, sounds like Santigold and other times like ...I don't know, but something very different. However, somehow it all works. It REALLY works.

Fever High from NYC
so going through this week's Spotify Fresh Finds playlist: https://open.spotify.com/user/spotify/playlist/3rgsDhGHZxZ9sB9DQWQfufi came across this track:
Fever High - Tantalizedhttps://open.spotify.com/track/65oCsBAaymBY1IsxRGjdikreleased August 14th
a joyful uptempo infectious electronic pop track
Soundcloudhttps://soundcloud.com/feverhigh/tantalized
immediately on listening to the track: Bananarama flashed in my mind,
did a quick google search, and yep others noticed the similarity, including a twitter account:

this may be my favorite song of the year so far
― daavid, Saturday, 22 August 2015 19:48 (nine years ago)
Lyric video is not really what that song needed. Didn't realize it was so full of dated-five-minutes-from-now slang until it was right in my face.
― Johnny Fever, Saturday, 22 August 2015 20:39 (nine years ago)
It is a little bit in some places, yes. Trying a bit too hard. But on the other hand the line "tout le monde est jittering" line makes me happy.
― daavid, Saturday, 22 August 2015 21:31 (nine years ago)
that's almost like a k-pop song in how it's five songs

"Break a Sweat" is cool but what I really want to hear is a remix that stretches out the groove at 3:05-3:10 for ~10 minutes.

another artist from Toronto !
Bossie - There will be Timehttps://soundcloud.com/bossieperson/there-will-be-time
strong uptempo pop track with a pulsating groove, stereogum throw up Blondie and Cyndi Lauper references, i also detect some Altered Images
via
http://www.stereogum.com/1825754/bossie-there-will-be-time-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/
Bossie is Toronto pop artist Anne Douris. She got some positive attention for last year’s “Meteor,” a bass-driven groove that managed to be both wildly fun and deeply wistful, especially when paired with its humorous, glittery video. She’s getting ready to make her live debut next month, and it’s preceded by another excellent single called “There Will Be Time.” There are traces of Blondie in the way Bossie’s breathy vocals navigate the verse’s dark-tinged synth-bass undercurrent, but the roller-rink chorus is all Cyndi Lauper. It’s one of those genius pop songs that feels like an explosion of bright colors and good feelings.
the other Bossie track mentioned by Stereogum is down as a 2015 track on spotify

I mentioned Madi Diaz's in the rolling pop thread last year, and now there's a new standalone single "Control". Such a thick low end! It's possible she's crossed all the way over into shambhala at this point, but I still think she's got pop bona fides that a lot of things I share in that thread don't.

i dunno, but doesn't this describe most UK-based pop singers who aren't Sam Smith or Adele? Rita at least has a US label trying hard to keep her visible, so far the Iggy Azalea hook is the only thing that's really broken through.

This is a quick, third-quarter reminder that all available tracks mentioned on this thread (and a handful of album selections from each listed) are being updated to the thread-specific Spotify playlist as posted. I just did another top-to-bottom sweep prior to posting this message and have revised as of today with everything that's been added since first mentioned. Subscribe if you're into it!
It's 120 tracks, over 7 hours.

kinda feel like someone should mention hotline bling in this threadi'm pretty sure i don't like it but it's interesting to me that drake is doing bruno mars and that's likely gonna make for his most marketable self.

As we move into December, I'd like to drop a quick note to encourage any readers / lurkers / ilxors to post their favorite as-yet-unmentioned pop tracks from this year to the thread so that I can hoover them into the ongoing spotify playlist. Last chance for any accessible stragglers that may not already be in the lexicon.

I'm really happy about Zara Larsson's success in the UK and Europe and Australia but now I hope Lush Life becomes as big or a bigger hit than the one with MNEK.

I'm wrapping this playlist for the year. It has been updated with a few new adds (Tkay Maidza, Ronya, Kiiara, Flor) and includes every track mentioned on thread that is available via Spotify's US catalogue as of EOY 2015. If I missed something or if a track comes available sometime in the future, bump here to let me know and I'll add.

On track to do so here, and given that the song scans to me like a new and improved version of "Lean On" I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up smashing everywhere. Threw it onto the end of my ILX ballot, it's been my early summer bop
