are we voting for which one is worse?

Yup. Sorry, should have mentioned--these were the two "winners" of the two previous Worst Song polls. Vote for your least fave.

I'd still vote for "Rude" even if all I knew about either song were the above screen caps.

j. winters (josh), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 04:43 (ten years ago)

would you like "all about that bass" more or less if you were to learn that the original inspiration for the line "i'm all about that bass, no treble" came when meghan trainor was reading old ilx pages and thinking of things she could have posted to troll geir hongro?

Treeship, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 04:58 (ten years ago)

No.

that said, "Rude"

Simon H., Tuesday, 20 January 2015 05:02 (ten years ago)

Neither of these songs is actively terrible. But the "no treble" metaphor is worse than the misuse of the word "rude"

It took 35 years for a song to turn me against the bass. Easy vote.

All About That Bass was more ubiquitous, right?

Rude was one of those songs I had just kind of absorbed somehow by osmosis, never even knew there was a current band called MAGIC!

Meghan Trainor's presence is definitely much more felt in the world right now.

both songs have crossed over from painfully heinous to enjoyably heinous for me, more genuinely impressed by the pile-up of hooks in "bass" than "rude," but "rude"'s guitar solo was probably the biggest lol Top 40 gave me this year. so this is hard!

da croupier, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

omg that guitar solo, does that normally get cut out of the radio version? I swear I've never heard that before and that's at a serious "shreds" level of incompetent.

The video kind of makes them look like a "real band" (apology in advance for rockism), like the guy manages to almost not seem like he was farm-raised from birth to be a pop star.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:22 (ten years ago)

I get almost an inverse vibe from Trainor, it's like she tries very hard to project this "knowing" vibe like she's "been around the block a few times" but it's not convincing at all.

walid foster dulles (man alive), Tuesday, 20 January 2015 16:23 (ten years ago)

I've loved Rude unconditionally since I first heard it on satellite radio, but listening to the song with the video actively devalues it. It's so dopey and the lead singer is the aesthetic equivalent of a sandwich left in the rain.

AATB however is just godawful, and I dont even need to see the video to get bad vibes from it. It takes a reasonably catchy melody and childish teehee wordplay and stretches whats basically a 2 minute song to 5 or 6 torturous minu--*scrolls up to check actual length of the song*--WHAT, IT'S SHORTER THAN RUDE?!

That says it all right there, Bass is repetitive to the point of torture and I hate it

MrExplorer, Tuesday, 20 January 2015 22:10 (ten years ago)

MrExplorer, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 00:15 (ten years ago)

Wow that "Rude" solo. It's like C3P0 with a nearly dead battery channeling Andy Summers. But then the song goes into that vaguely pretty Richard Marx-ish prechorus. It's a pretty sucky song all told but has some nice moments.

I don't get what is so bad about "All About the Bass"? Sounds like pretty standard, generic bubblegum pop to me.

Hammer Smashed Bagels, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 00:29 (ten years ago)

Both songs are awful. Meghan Trainor comes across in interviews as being incredibly grateful for and amazed by her success. Dude from Magic! acts like his one-hit wonder status is his birthright. Also it's easier to imagine Jar-Jar Binks singing "Rude".

In summation, fuck these songs.

With Magic!, the interview was how I found out the song existed; it was passed around as a "look at this tool and his terrible music" lol and then suddenly every radio station was playing "Rude" and that joke wasn't funny anymore(TM)

With Meghan Trainor, she showed up on The Today Show and I was surprised by how nonplussed and excited she was. Then she sang "Your Lips Are Moving" and I thought "this isn't that good but at least it sounds like it's making an attempt to not be terrible"

on Y-100's morning show last week the deejay goes, "Alright! That was Meghan Trainor with 'All About That Bass'!" His colleague goes, "Uh, no, that was 'Lips Are Movin'." He goes, "Shut up." Uncomfortable silence, followed by hysterical laughter.

qualx, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 02:21 (ten years ago)

my reaction to "rude" (first heard on the jukebox as some cancon thing) was "this is gonna get blurred lines-ed to death but it's ultimately kind of innocuously pleasant." my reaction to "all about that bass" was a mixture of "the kids still like hairspray, don't they" and "this sounds like a C-list radio disney track that will be half-heartedly promoted even by radio disney."

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 03:57 (ten years ago)

I thought "Bass" was kinda cute on first blush, but it didn't hold up well. I got very tired of it. I never liked "Rude" at all. For me addlepated girl-group pastiche trumps frat-bro cod reggae.

something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 05:45 (ten years ago)

Rude's lyrics win this for me. The whole childlike whining through the chorus about this girl, then ending with "I wanna marry you anyway" = induce teeth grating

dutch_justice, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 05:58 (ten years ago)

I have a different take on this:

"Rude" is more pseudo-ska fodder for Sublime-worshipping dude bros who are generally horrible people, or at best have poor priorities, make bad decisions and need to grow up. This song gives them something else to listen to while taking a bong hit.

"All About That Bass" opened up more discourse into topics such as self esteem from body image, fat shaming and our cultures very complicated and damn near hypocritical opposing forces of being one of the fattest nations ever while having a media that promotes unrealistic body shapes as the norm and billions are spent dealing with weight. Despite sounding like a throwaway pop song, in the age of social media and slacktivism, it had legs beyond that.

The choice is pretty clear to me.

people who listen to drowning pool, bob marley and yes, sublime, do not really factor into the success of six-week #1 hits

a song is not going to stay at #1 for six weeks because of any demographic smaller than "young people"

qualx, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 07:46 (ten years ago)

Couple weeks ago on the M11 bus going up 10th Ave around 6PM. A middle-aged woman and her teenage I guess daughter plunk down next to me on the back bench. "Could you make room for my friend?" Sure no problem. So she's not yr daughter? Whatever. They're both wide-eyed and enthusiastic, speaking loudly and soliciting eye contact like, well, tourists from the midwest or mildly nutty attention-seekers. Suddenly they break into song. "I'm all about that bass etc" Just the chorus hook, over and over, in unison. Desperately looking around now like why won't these grumpy commuters join in the fun? Finally the older one NUDGES me and asks "Have you ever done karaoke?" "Uh no." Decide not to say I've always wanted to. "WELL WHY NOT?" I don't have an answer and at this point everybody else in the bus is busy hiding behind cell phones or newspapers. Undaunted, the dynamic duo resume their duet. "No Treble!"

"Rude" was originally based on a real-life situation. The lead singer of Magic!, Nasri, had been in an unhealthy relationship with a previous girlfriend. One day, after his girlfriend was mad at him and started to become harsh, Nasri began singing the lines "Why you gotta be so rude/ don't you know I'm human too" in what he describes a "dark vibe." However, the concept did not work with the band well so it was revised and eventually made into a man talking to the disapproving father of his lover.[1]

Genre: reggae fusion

I hope this means the girlfriend was still there, becoming harsh.

I was half-expecting the next sentence to be how they found the girlfriend's body in a closet, all deformed like she'd watched the video from The Ring

Dunno, but I do! "Bass" is a kitschy trifle I've heard maybe five times total and don't hate it. I have a pretty high tolerance for this kind of stuff. Voted "Rude."

Losing swag by the second (Dan Peterson), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:48 (ten years ago)

An interesting theory about Rude: there may be more to it than meets the eye. Nasri is apparently of Palestinian descent, and the video subtly suggests the father is Jewish. At 1:21, he clearly mouths "L'Chaim" while toasting his daughter's presumably Jewish suitor. At 1:41, a Jewish star is visible on the peephole of the door, and indeed, at 1:48, the father literally looks at Nasri "through" the Jewish star, as Nasri sings "I'll never get your blessing til the day I die." Israel cannot accept the Palestinian people unless they are dead. Hence the plaintive "don't you know I'm human too?"

that's a neat way to complain about someone using words without denying their accuracy

da croupier, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 18:23 (ten years ago)

well, "banal" is too subjective to quibble over. no issue there. it's the "heteronormal minstrelsy" that i find objectionable, laden as it is with the implication of moral condemnation. i don't see trainor's passing mention of "boys" as heteronormative in any but the most meaninglessly generic sense. and "minstrelsy" invokes something that has no clear place in this discussion, only fouls the well.

but that's just me.

deliberately clunky, needlessly arty, (contenderizer), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 18:33 (ten years ago)

i understand if your brain did a tire screech after those words but i followed them with that can seem overfamiliar to the point of negligibility to acknowledge that their offensiveness on those level is subjective, but that the raw igredients are there in a white reggae song about the denial of dowry and a boogie about how boys will still fuck you if you have da booty-booty da booty-booty

da croupier, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 18:35 (ten years ago)

i'd almost sympathize with the idea that dropping those words will likely lead to a thread derailment, but not if you're the first one to call them out

"I'm all about that bass etc" Just the chorus hook, over and over, in unison.

This is exactly like what listening to the original song is.

"Because you know I'm all about that bass, bout that bass, no treble" *hmm thats all I've got* *better repeat it four times* *okay thats my chorus* *oh here at the end I'm out of lines* *what do I do?* *oh I'll just repeat the chorus four times!* WHICH IS ALREADY JUST THE HOOK FOUR TIMES

MrExplorer, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:09 (ten years ago)

was just remembering some writer talking about a metaphor being so bad that it was a "single entendre"

walid foster dulles (man alive), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:22 (ten years ago)

Bass is bad but easy to laugh about/at and a lot of fun to bother people with. There's a certain glee people get from hating it. That's worth something. And Trainor voice is kind of fun to do a bad impression of. ALABADA BASS BADA BASS in the middle of a convo can get a laugh.

rude is just so joylessly hopelessly awful and offensive and there's just nothing. NOTHING. i hate it and i don't even have fun hating it. it adds nothing to anything. it just makes any 3 minutes in your life where it comes on or comes up worse.

What's worse is that a coworker of mine who I respect quite a bit but had never talked abt music with (he does mention that he used to be a musician somewhat frequently which may have been a red flag but I was dumb) recommended this band when I finally asked him about non-work stuff (and I led with "what is the last good record you listened to"). My judgement of other people's music taste has evaporated almost completely in the past 10 years or so -- like whatever the fuck you like, and really nothing's garbage to me anymore -- but for the first time in a while I had to conceal a face of utter contempt. If he had said Bass, I would've been like "haha yeah that song." But he said Rude, and I was like "...I can never talk to this guy about music again."

TL;DR Rude takes this one and it isn't even close.

Francis Björk Morgan (Will M.), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 19:30 (ten years ago)

maybe it's because I grew up with so much music that sounds like it, but Rude seems only passively bad while Bass is actively so. Plus, both songs will inspire imitators, and Trainor seems like she is breaking new ground for her special brand of shittiness which is worse than having to ignore yet more white guy reggae tracks.

Saturday morning jumped out of bed
And put on my best suit
Got in my car and raced like a jet
All the way to you
Knocked on your door with heart in my hand
To ask you a question
'Cause I know that you're an old-fashioned man, yeah

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, but the answer is 'No'

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?
Why you gotta be so rude?
I'm gonna marry her anyway

Marry that girl
Marry her anyway
Marry that girl
Yeah, no matter what you say
Marry that girl
And we'll be a family
Why you gotta be so
Rude

I hate to do this, you leave no choice
Can't live without her
Love me or hate me we will be boys
Standing at that altar
Or we will run away
To another galaxy, you know
You know she's in love with me
She will go anywhere I go

Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life?
Say yes, say yes 'cause I need to know
You say I'll never get your blessing 'til the day I die
Tough luck, my friend, 'cause the answer's still 'No"

Why you gotta be so rude?
Don't you know I'm human too?

clearly the only answer is a mashup of the two

walid foster dulles (man alive), Friday, 30 January 2015 18:21 (ten years ago)

according to a quick google at least three separate mashups exist

katherine, Friday, 30 January 2015 18:29 (ten years ago)

Why you gotta be all about that bass?
Tough luck my friend but the answer is NO TREBLE.

The Meghan Trainor hate on this site is bizarre, lol

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:13 (seven years ago)

did u know that she put out new music recently and plans to release an album? first single sounded like a zumba class

dyl, Monday, 23 July 2018 19:14 (seven years ago)

I'm sad that there weren't a million thinkpieces written about this song/video by Meghan Trainor's aunt: https://youtu.be/pKU8k2TMwOw

No organ. (crüt), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:20 (seven years ago)

i don't think most of us think about Meghan that frequently. I think more about the shitty Magic! song, mostly cos I heard it in a damn Fuddrucker's today

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:21 (seven years ago)

Someone mentioned she was among ILM's most-hated artists, and I've seen evidence of that as these old threads have bubbled up...

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:27 (seven years ago)

I think the guys in magic were just dummies who faceplanted into a number one whereas trainor is actually releasing this garbage with malicious intent.

how's life, Monday, 23 July 2018 19:32 (seven years ago)

i haven't heard a song of hers since the awful "Lips are Moving" so I might be shielded from all this

fuck the NRA (Neanderthal), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:34 (seven years ago)

Rude has been much easier to avoid for me. So All about that bass.

Van Horn Street, Monday, 23 July 2018 19:37 (seven years ago)

xp "Lips are Moving" is a fine song... though my friend hates it, too. What is it that puts you guys off so much?

i’m still stanning (morrisp), Monday, 23 July 2018 19:37 (seven years ago)

I don't like her voice, not really into soca music, don't dig the melody.

but, I'm not exactly a heavy pop listener either.
