Johnny Fever's Not Pop Not Indie Shambhala 2015

What is Shambhala? It's hard to say. This is the fourth consecutive year I've started this thread and there's still no clear definition. Often it concerns songs with a pop bent that would never in a million years touch the pop charts, but songs that are still too clean and unscuzzy enough to be ignored by the likes of Pitchfork or Stereogum. It's a largely female dominated category—at least as far as my own listening goes—but it doesn't have to be. There are usually synths, layered vocals, and drum machines. Sometimes the sounds are bright and sometimes they're icy cold. If you come across something you think fits, then share it. We trust you.

I've been riding this song "Fearless" by Indigo Face pretty hard the past week or two. Liz Fraser and Kate Bush are often the comparisons people use when someone sings up high like the singer of this song, but it doesn't particularly sound like either of them. That said, it probably resides in the same zip code.

No video yet. Just a stream: http://www.reverbnation.com/indigofacemusic/songs

Would Chvrches fit this? Their first album, if the Sundays had produced it, there'd be celebrating on ilx in the streets...

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 08:01 (ten years ago)

Chvrches would fit, though I'm personally on the fence about them.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)

Shambhala = stuff that sounds like a more poppy The Knife? (theres a lot of this about)

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:21 (ten years ago)

Yeah, sounds apt.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 21 January 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

New Monogem (my favorite yet?): https://soundcloud.com/monogem/theglow

The little fluttery synth sounds are one of my favorite things whenever they turn up in a song. Anyone know what synth voice that is? Maybe I should ask startrekman.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 00:11 (ten years ago)

Also, new Tove Styrke track named "Ego" from the new album in March. Favorite thing I've heard from her yet, ever.

allie x and alex winston have albums coming out in the next few months

bae sremmurd (monotony), Friday, 23 January 2015 04:01 (ten years ago)

Ooh, an Allie X album? Looking forward to it. I'll have to listen to the new Alex Winston song again to remember whether or not I should be excited for that one (the first album was a minor disappointment after some good singles).

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:51 (ten years ago)

Okay, yeah, it's good. Put me down for cautious anticipation.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 23 January 2015 06:53 (ten years ago)

Oh hey, there's an even newer one than "Careless". It's called "We Got Nothing".

if i fall apart due to work or distraction, will open them up for group input but for the moment i wanna handle in/out as this seems potentially less successful as a wiki than as a one-man project. that said, if you wanna tailor more to your own tastes, i strongly recommend pulling and starting yer own list and building out from there.

Catching up… my fave thing so far is that Monogram track. Sounds Italo-influenced but without falling into the Italo cliches. Really nice!

daavid, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 04:57 (ten years ago)

…by 'Monogram' y mean MonoGEM, of course.

daavid, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 04:59 (ten years ago)

The little fluttery synth sounds are one of my favorite things whenever they turn up in a song. Anyone know what synth voice that is? Maybe I should ask startrekman.

Do you mean the middle 8th solo?

daavid, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 05:03 (ten years ago)

No, the high sounds in the verses. I've heard it in a few different songs. I guess it doesn't really matter since I don't have a synth of my own. I just love it when I hear it.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 05:34 (ten years ago)

There's really no info about this one. She doesn't have a fb page, and there are no other links for her on soundcloud. But this song "Hope" by Silk Cinema is really breezy, but with a heavy 4/4 stomp.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 05:40 (ten years ago)

would young ejecta (formerly ejecta) meet the criteria for this? i'm enjoying her latest EP and the full length from last year or the year before is also good

i'm tellin you it was kenard (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 16:30 (ten years ago)

Ejecta's marketing schtick (i only appear in promotional photography naked) is a little uhhhhh

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)

i mean if it's entirely her choice and not anyone masterminding the band or the producer she works with, i can't hate or judge, although i understand what you're sayin. the music itself is pretty good melodic synthpop

indie fuxxor albums i have secretly spotified (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:00 (ten years ago)

I'm not super familiar with her, but if you think it fits here then it probably does.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:05 (ten years ago)

sloth: it's just cause i had an early club show i worked with her as an artist. The music is hardly transgressive and she doesn't PERFORM nude. it's just a pretty obvious marketing choice and not one i resent, just a lil eyerolly.

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:23 (ten years ago)

Leanne Macomber

I’ve been shooting myself naked for years. I’ve shot tons of people naked. I just don’t like what clothing can say about a person. I wanted Ejecta to be free of class, sexuality, and culture. I wanted Ejecta to be timeless and sort of an everywoman. Clothing is fetish. I remember shooting my first nude. I was in high school and a girlfriend wanted pictures for her boyfriend. She wore nothing but these tiny pink panties with hearts on them. My teacher pointed out to me how much more sexual the semi-nude is than the full nude. It’s so true.

Musically, a bit too twee for me.

non-masturbatory prog excursion (Sanpaku), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:25 (ten years ago)

xp tru the image and actual art are kind of incongruous. lyrics are the only thing that could be considered remotely transgressive - and only by the prudest of prudes

indie fuxxor albums i have secretly spotified (slothroprhymes), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:27 (ten years ago)

be naked/don't be naked is whatever but when you say "i will ONLY allow naked press materials to be circulated" you're being a bit precious for me

Sounds like a forks display name (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 19:30 (ten years ago)

Listening to the ep now. She sings just barely above a whisper and I can't tell if that makes me like it or hate it.

Hi JF! Does this count? It's rather twee, admittedly, but such a gorgeous song.

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 20:26 (ten years ago)

I dunno, that seems squarely "indie" to me.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 27 January 2015 20:32 (ten years ago)

I'm new to this thread

a pleasant little psychedelic detour in the elevator (Amory Blaine), Tuesday, 27 January 2015 20:33 (ten years ago)

will this be the year that ILM deigns to create an actual indie thread?

so not gonna häpna (seandalai), Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:30 (ten years ago)

I think last year is the only one in recent history where there wasn't a dedicated "indie" thread.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 01:38 (ten years ago)

Amory, traditionally this thread is dedicated to mostly electronic, low to mid-tempo pop that sounds a bit too 'indie' to fit squarely into the mainstream. Coincidentally (or perhaps not) a lot of it tends to be by new-ish Scandinavian artists… also, more often than not, it's sung by women.

daavid, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 06:41 (ten years ago)

That's turned out to be mostly true. I'm sure there are other sounds that qualify as "not pop not indie," but we all seem to gravitate towards much the same thing. Also, forks, if you read this, you're missing the Tove Styrke song "Ego" in the spotify playlist.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 06:45 (ten years ago)

Something that fits squarely in daavid's description, though, is this song by Susanne Sundfør from her next album. The instrumentation is clearly modern, but I think the melodies/harmonies and general structure of the song is 100% ABBA. I love it to pieces.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdSB_PcBW3k

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 28 January 2015 06:48 (ten years ago)

xxpost - Actually, JF already described it better in the first post. More than being indie, I'd say the song you posted is a bit too guitar-oriented and too retro (it's got an obvious '90s-alternative influence) for this thread.

Thx for defining the thread's parameters in the OP, JF. Whenever I've seen this rolling thread in past years, I've thought "oh, so it's just a catch-all?" and not been motivated to click. This time, curiosity got the best of me, and I''m excited that it seems to be up my alley. (Now watch as I never post in this thread again.)

The Say Lou Lou album is out there now. It's just been released in Sweden and can be bought on import. It doesn't come out in the US/UK until April 6th. Just giving it a listen for the first time now.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:24 (ten years ago)

Still mad they put stupid "Julian" on it and left off the beautiful "Maybe You."

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:27 (ten years ago)

Interesting that you say you are mad about that as their Popjustice thread is full of people complaining Eclipse hasn't been included. I haven't heard either of those songs but will have to check them out after I finish the album. It sounds good so far.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:34 (ten years ago)

I hadn't heard Eclipse before people started complaining it wasn't on there. Turns out to be quite nice.

Julian was their second single back a couple years ago. After introducing themselves with Maybe You, anything probably would've been a letdown, but even with that caveat I still think Julian is a fairly terrible song.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:38 (ten years ago)

I haven't been following them from the beginning like you and plenty of others have been doing. I only got into them from the two songs nominated on the Spotify playlist (Everything We Touch and Games For Girls) I didn't realised they had already put out six singles. Along with Maybe You they left off Better In The Dark as well. They did put a few B-sides on there though which is a bit strange.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 16:59 (ten years ago)

I think I found out about them at the beginning because I'm always sort of paying attention to all things The Church, and since they're Steve Kilbey's daughters they became immediately interesting.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 24 February 2015 17:04 (ten years ago)

Just listened to Maybe You and Better In The Dark. Both should be on the album.

bae sremmurd (monotony), Wednesday, 25 February 2015 01:11 (ten years ago)

Did you enjoy the album monotony? Think it could do with a few upbeat songs in the middle section but I did really enjoy it.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 25 February 2015 03:29 (ten years ago)

very pleasant - in terms of stuff in this lane i think it's a lot better than the indiana & rae morris albums but maybe not quite as good (certainly not as interesting) as the susanne sundfor

i'm happy they made "games for girls" as it reminds me of the thing of theirs i've returned to the most - the tiger & woods remix of "better in the dark"

Kate Boy - Higher

Enticing as ever, though a bit heavy on the reverb. I fear the album rollout is as sabotaged by label delays as Indiana's was.

äkta människa (Sanpaku), Wednesday, 4 March 2015 02:24 (ten years ago)

Yeah, that's a good song. Sort of a letdown that there's only one new song on a 5-song ep, but I'll take it.

another big bombastic track from Zella Day, added to spotify today from the soundtrack to the film Insurgent

Zella Day is often referred to as a more uptempo Lana Del Rey, and this track certainly reflects this.

Ane Brun has a new lead single off a 2015 album.

The last album was a bracing affair, despite a similarly charming lead.

I know nothing about Jennie Abrahamson, except that "Wolf" is shambhalatastic.

Sanpaku, Thursday, 12 March 2015 18:56 (ten years ago)

There's a connection, both Brun and Abrahamson have been tapped for Peter Gabriel tours (and the obligatory "Don't Give Up" duet).

Listen: PILLARS - “Woman Without Her Love” Premiere
http://www.thelineofbestfit.com/new-music/song-of-the-day/pillars-woman-without-her-love

Female-fronted electro-pop; the genre is bursting at the seams and we’re more than happy about it. From Emilie Nicolas’ beautifully ballsy composition to Shura’s 80s-inspired work, there’s no denying it continues to be a wonderfully thriving market. Today a West London-based newcomer puts her hand up to join the growing ranks.

If you get a chance to see Karin Park, take it. I expected not-too-exciting singing+sequencers, but I wanted to see a show while I was here in Stockholm and there she was. But her drummer is her brother, and he comes out in a Slayer shirt and begins hitting things very hard, and she is at least 9 feet tall and has a keytar, and the whole thing was extremely entertaining. Good crowd response from whatever she was saying in Swedish, too.

"From the wilds of Southeast London, Tidelines have arrived with their debut single. They are a duo practiced in the art of spooky, skittering electronica, wrapping the listener up in a sound cocoon so silky you’re hardly aware it’s there. But the kick does come, and in “Say My Name” it bursts through in twinkling waves, the beat split open with a synth so sudden and full it forces you to listen back to the entire song with that moment in mind."

Here’s the new single from New Zealand’s Princess Chelsea (formerly of the Brunettes), taken from her conceptual and kind of epic new record The Great Cybernetic Depression. “Too Many People“, which features vocals from Brunettes founding member Jonathan Bree, is a lilting, deceptively dark cosmic lullaby that recalls the similarly dystopian retro-futuristic vibes present in her amazing video for “No Church on Sunday“. I'm super into this EP, Pools to Bathe In, by The Japanese House (aka 19 year-old Amber Bain). Creeping beats and heavily processed vocals, but then the light breaks through in spots and an amazing melody hits. "Teeth" is the one with the most resonance for me, but the whole EP is a stunner.

Reminds me of Hugo Largo/Mimi Goese in some ways.

The Tove Styrke album is seriously fantastic. She reminds me of Lykke Li but with punch instead of wistfulness, and I love the production on it - it's almost reggae in some spots, acidic in others.

Hey JF, have you checked out The Amazing's new album, Picture You? A presumptuous band name, I know, lol. But this record is badass, albeit in a low-key kind of way. Most of the songs are rather long, but I find them, on the whole, to be more hypnotic than annoying. I've read many comparison's to various classic rock bands, but I've yet to nail down anyone in particular.

"an impression of goldfrapp that is good" I agree with JF regarding the Supernature reference. Superhumanoids have gone back 10 years in the time tunnel for a carbon copy.

Let Aïsha Devi's Hi-Fi Shamanism Lull You Into A Trance
http://www.thefader.com/2015/07/07/aisha-devi-kim-the-wheel-of-life

The EP's trance-like first single "Kim & The Wheel of Life" elaborates on these themes. Devi tells The FADER: "This track's about the hypnosis of masses via materialistic icons, alienation from the society versus resistance through self-teaching and spirituality. Inducing liberation from dogma and indoctrination through a collective and active trance. I've produced the repetitive pattern on the Roland JP 8080, a synth that basically shaped Euro-dance anthems. I love this machine, the massive brightness of its frequencies has the ability to stimulate higher consciousness and open the crown chakra. Hi-fi shamanism." Get hypnotized below, and look out for Conscious Cunt's release on July 24th, with a debut album to follow later this year on Houndstooth.

Not all the way shoegaze, and no electronics to speak of, so maybe shambhala is really the best interzone description for it. Totally enveloping and warm and fuzzy.

I wanted to poll the big 'Heart of Glass' ripoff songs from the 2010s, but I can't remember them all. I'm sure there must be one at least every year, right?

Arcade Fire - Sprawl II: Mountains Beyond Mountains (2010)
St Vincent - Cruel (2011)
Susanne Sundfor - Fade Away (2015)
