Eight songs seems like not a lot after such a long wait, but maybe (I hope?) they're eight REALLY GOOD songs. "Gone Fishing" portends good things imo.

It's getting better with every listen. It may be my favorite song of the year so far.

Going Fishing travels so many places in six minutes. I typically have "long-song ADD" but I sort of trust her to not let me down in this regard.

I like that it works out she's spent one year per song on this new album. Judging by Gone Fishing this album is going to be worth the wait.

i really don't know what i think of the album yet but it feels like she's tiptoeing around the concept somewhat. which she should, to be fair, because it's a minefield, but it ends up so careful. some very impressive moments w/r/t structure, arrangements etc but she never goes for it at any point? when "jealousy" comes on afterwards it feels a billion times more alive.

think the restraint contributes to the anxiety and tension kinda running unbrokenly through the whole record

i think it comes at the expense of any real emotional pull tbh. it's a very tasteful and accomplished concept album but it feels like RM knew that the entire thing had to be handled with care - straight white woman makes album explicitly and entirely about gay black men's experiences, how could it possibly go wrong - and it ended up a touch too sensitive, maybe. idk, i'm still getting to grips with it but i'm not exactly drawn to put it on much, and when i do i find myself appreciating it on a head level way more than on a heart level.

haven't yet seen an interview with her, would have pitched but it's not as if i know a huge amount about the paris is burning era either, lol

This song was written after I watched the documentary film Paris Is Burning, having read an article which referenced it in a discussion about House music's origins in black, gay culture. I was deeply moved by this film. 'I had to run this far from home' - it's about the outcasts who could never fit into mainstream society and how they created a safe place in the drag 'Ball' scene of New York in the ‘80s. 'Will we live on? The children of La Beija' refers to the 'house' of Pepper La Beija, who was one of the most notable figures on the scene, Pepper is also quoted in Malcolm McLaren's song on the same subject 'Deep In Vogue'. The culture was a flamboyant reaction to persecution and disillusionment, the imagination and bravery of these kids is simply awe-inspiring. I envisioned 'Gone Fishing' almost as a song from a Broadway musical version of this story. The making of one's own world, a safer world and the creation of a new, better family in music or youth culture is a theme I touch upon elsewhere on my album Hairless Toys.

If you mean Exploitation, that's one of the things I like about that track (my favorite from the album, in either the single version or album version).

It seems to lose a bit of momentum towards the second half. But the first four tracks or so have some incredible moments.

I love that the bass is used so sparsely (both here and in Hairless Toys) but when it's there, it's fucking there. No messing around.

Enjoying this a lot. It was less instant than Hairless Toys but I'm enjoying it more as a whole after a few plays. Some of it reminds me of a more mellow version of Ruby Blue.

Love the moment on "Uninvited guests" where the devil may care slacker vibe turns into a gorgeous wide screen bridge. Roisin excels at these emotional shifts in songs, sections that change your perception of the narrative

pointless anecdote but i met kathy diamond at a carboot fair last summer. would never have recognised her but she was selling a load of household things - furniture and stuff like that - and on the ground under a table i spotted a pile of about 20 records which turned out to be all the last remaining copies of her debut 12" so i was all 'ah wait a second, is this you!?'

I always think of the first Kathy Diamond album as being very weightless and floaty in a different way to this. I love her, everything she sings on is instantly brilliant. What did she say when you realised it was her? I heard she had been very ill for a few years.

Is it all Parrot? Don't get me wrong, I like each of these tracks, to a point, sometimes a high point, but most of them really do drag. Almost every one outstays it's welcome and even though this bpm is *very me* I want them to be zippier. There's a lethargy in them that I find a bit depressing. I'm sure that's a very unpopular opinion on here, though.

It's quite possible that R Machine feels the same way, actually, as she mentioned on something (was it the chat with Jessie Ware?) that the parrot collab was done now.

Never Saw It Coming is one of those rare tracks where I/you thought, "oh I haven't heard this track for years"/"oh fuck, this is brand new!" when it came out. I think it was/is a classic straight off the bat. You felt like you knew it as soon as you heard it.

I’m starting to write songs for Róisín Murphy. That’s another biggie. I have a very deep and meaningful relationship with Ms. Murphy. Whenever I hear myself say that, I get a lump in my throat because I can’t even really believe that I’m saying it. Nah, the fada over the 'ó' and 'í' generally indicates a long vowel, so it is indeed Row-Sheen. Up north, we pronounce it Rosh-sheen, but that wouldn't be the case in Leinster (where Ms. Murphy is from).

new album unsurprisingly quite good but none of the previously unreleased tracks are among the best on it

agree although I love “game changer” with its callbacks to “murphy’s law” and rhythm that seems part “the dreaming” and part...something from ruby blue, maybe.

the continuous mix nature of it all means that even some of the singles that I’ve been rinsing for years feel fresh

i don't think this is going to end up replacing hairless toys as my favourite of her solo albums but it still really rules

also the album version of "jealousy" definitely loses a lot by only being 4 minutes and just fading out

this is a disappointment for me tbh. i think i got very attached to a few of the remixes (the cosmodelica remix of murphy's law is stunning, incredible piano lines everywhere) and the album versions are all letting me down.

Her best album since Overpowered, despite a couple okay things.

i'm really baffled about the version of 'incapable' on here when the 'extended edit' is clearly superior. it's not even that much longer (:30 or so), it just gets the timing right on introducing the elegaic chords in the bridge and is generally more tightly structured.

'we got together' is .. bad imo.

oh i hadn't noticed the way the album version of "incapable" has those synths come in during the chorus instead of the bridge, really weird

i'm not exactly sure which "extended edit" you mean though, the original "edit" was 3:30 which is actually shorter than the album version, but it works better

the biggest problem i have with the short "jealousy" is the fade-out because it really needs the definitive ending of the original to close out the album properly when it's such an explosion of energy

Discogs user notes "Incapable and Game Changer are both slightly longer than their CD and digital counterparts, as they fade out cleanly instead of segueing into the next track."

Game Changer feels a little like a throwback to Ruby Blue imo, with the vocal melody in the verse being sketched in the margins, and the syncopate-y handclap.

We Got Together is one of my favourite tracks on this, like the massive WHOMP! of the bass just does something to my lizard brain.

But, y'know, hey, people like different things in music.

Kingdom of Ends and We Got Together both make the album better IMO simply by virtue of mixing things up a bit.

“kingdom of ends” is one of her very best songs imo

I really like Jessie Ware so I don't say this to denigrate but this is better. Jessie is only like 95% fabulous whereas Roisin is like 120%

Roisin Murphy is more of a person or personage while Jessie Ware strives for and achieves disco-era anonymity.

LJ be aware that there are 8-12 minute original versions of most of the songs here, and several of them have 45-minute-long remix suites by the co-author. if you love the album versions you might need medical supervision to listen further

this album is cannily not going for big catharsis or hugeness, it's playing a much slower and subtler game. intriguing. production is v on-point

like, for all that this is a slow-burn tease, there are engaging little details that keep me alert. currently the bassline to Shellfish Mademoiselle is that little detail

So here we are, an album listening party. Although this record draws on disco, dance club culture, past present and future. It is very much an album, deliberately so. The songs have been edited, dubbed out and segued together to create an album listening experience.

It’s not a record for the club, it’s for this purpose that we are about to partake in……

Many of you will know that I made this record with my old friend, long time music brother Richard Barratt aka Parrot aka Crooked Man. We also had Fat Dave at the controls and on guitar and keys. Let’s just take a moment to big him up.

In so many ways this record represents a return to something for me. To Sheffield, to the music scene that made me, a return to the soul of the dance floor.

Finally, I get an intro suitable for a queen. I feel my story is still untold but I’ll make my own happy ending. Mission statement for sure.

Simulation

Written ten years ago, released on Permanent Vacation in 2012. The backing track for Simulation was given to me straight after I finished Overpowered, along with a handful more. Most of which have actually found their way on the album, that is to say this record was already a pretty fully-formed entity ten years ago. It was there on paper.

The high hats!

Simulation is one of my favourite things that I’ve ever done. It’s spectral in its range of frequencies. There’s real dark darkness and real ecstatic euphoria.

Kingdom Of Ends

One of the last things completed for the album, certainly tinged with the feelings of the moment, it having been written in lockdown. There’s a theme going through the record ‘is that all there is?’ Not very original, but prescient.

This song is a kind of dedication to Mark Fisher, I’ve used many of the phrases he uses in his writing in this song and his pre-occupations of the end of desire and the end of capitalism. I’m deliberately trying to channel Bryan Ferry in places here.

Mark Fisher had me as the last princess of glam. Which perhaps I am?

My manager is also a fantastic singer and she can heard in the ecstatic backing vocals. Lockdown brought some of the best out of all of us.

This is the only time I've ever asked someone to write for me. To be honest Murphy’s Law was such a good song, I wanted to take the pressure off myself by having something to match it, to balance the record. So I asked Amy Douglas to write me a song about exponential need, about wanting more and more and more.

Shellfish Mademoiselle

What a funky funky funky Sheffield beat! I’d love to hear this on a system with friends. Our icecream’s not melted yet kids. It really is delightfully feminine this song, what a light touch Parrot has.

Squeezed a bit of microdosing in there.
Of course I wrote the lyric ‘I shouldn’t really be dancing at a time like this’ it was written in lockdown. How dare you sentence me to a lifetime without dancing, it’s a cliche I know, but hey it works......

Anyway it’s a metaphor. Full of innuendo. Wink wink. Dancing and loving. It’s about getting as much of that as possible because life’s too short.

Incapable

I always call Incapable ‘she’. It’s such a characterful track and the music is so perfectly balanced. It has great equilibrium.

It took Parrot a while to finish this cos he couldn’t imagine people dancing to a bird singing ‘I’m incapable’ !! But you know I always like to bring little EXTRA

Anyway what was I saying about her? She is rather conceited, she is saying things they don’t usually say in pop songs. It says ‘I got away with it, I’m unscathed’

We Got Together

This was a chant I did over the end of Flash of Light live. Parrot heard it and liked it and built this track around the lyric idea.

I get so much from that one little bit of lyric, we got together-that’s great, we got together in the past-I wish we could get tougher now, we all got together, we got toggery didn’t we? Or am I just imagining it?

......The meaning shifts. It’s almost impossible not to do the running man when this one comes on

But incredibly brave choices Dave and Parrot made in the studio when they built this track, what swagger!

Murphy's Law

What can I say about Murphy’s Law? I reckon it’s a stone cold classic, lads. The original version of this we were uncomfortable with, due to the high cheese levels. Nervous I should say. Although we know we were onto something good.....

Originally it was in a higher key. Wondered if that was the problem so I asked Parrot to transpose the whole thing down. I copied transposed vocal and replaced it, but we never could quite let go of this gender-bent transposed vocal. What you hear now is a blend of the two.

It just needed something a little ‘off’ to make it feel right. I love how it doesn’t take its too seriously and just sits back and relaxes in the groove.

Although we are in borderline cheese territory, somehow it remains super-cool. And if there’s going to be a law, why not Murphy’s Law? Sebi created these backing vocals, shout out going to the Big Wallop.

Game Changer

This is one of my favourites. We’re in the funky room, people are jazz dancing doing the splits and spinning on their backs. This album really is like a big building of rooms for having fun.

There is a gorgeous studio 54 space, there is a funky room, there is a UK bass sound system, there is a loft and there is a cellar - and the cellar is Sheffield. Pure and simple.

I guess it’s another song about resignation to one’s fate about succumbing, about playing with each other. I love this wailing backing vocal I managed to squeeze out, I was trying to channel Van Morrison.

Narcissus

In the studio, it seemed the track made me think of the word Narcissus which I began to chant over it. I then had to go and look up the myth, it was then just a simple case of inhabiting the characters of Echo. I’m calling out to all those fabulous magnetic men in my life.

Not saying narcissist, just pronouncing it Narcisciss for some reason 🤔

Jealousy

Pitchfork said ‘…starts in thrall to that destructive emotion and stays there. "jealousy" she chants as if demanding her own humanity….’

What a stomper, they don’t come around like this too often, lads. This track is literally hysterical.

I generally find those Tims Listening Parties irritating (they have a habit of taking over one's timeline) but these are wonderful insights into an amazing album.

This stuff seems to be getting a lot of traction in non-music-nerd settings, at least in my neighbourhood? Twice in the past few days, I've had to go by ~trouble spots for environmental sound~ (a builders' site on my road where they serenade the whole street with their music choices; an incredibly loud pumping exercise class that meets on top of the Common) and kind of bracing myself for the sensory onslaught and how bad it is going to be...

...and both spaces have beeen playing Roisin Murphy tracks the last times I have walked by? Which has been a really pleasant surprise when it's turned into music?

It's still "in print" digitally via Echo, who otherwise seem to only release physical material for Record Store Day, with BMGCAT instead of ECH cat #s, and then only of things that were on Warner, not Echo or any of their previous owners. Seems unlikely she'd have any sway in getting them to even press up 400 copies on "splatter vinyl" for RSD 2022.

After an eight-year hiatus (which nonetheless included several singles, vocal features, and side projects)

ie a full second-LPs-worth of B-sides from the album sessions, touring the world, ninety minutes of new singles, half an hour of guest collabs, and an entire Ramones-length LP/double-EP they just ignored. this is a pretty decent output for a working musician at all, let alone during a "hiatus" consisting of a private equity group taking over their 80-year-old label, gutting the staff and largely dissolving the business within months of their album release! (then losing two billion in two years and selling the remnants to an investment bank) (who then broke up everything left into parts and sold it to various alcohol marketers and electronics manufacturers and telcos)

i'm not sure what you mean, she really didn't put out that much between overpowered and hairless toys, only a few one-off singles, collaborations, and her italian covers EP?

that's about three hours of material (during a time when she apparently legally couldn't record an album)! plus international touring until EMI's new owners realised someone was signing off on tour support, fashion industry stuff, and the 2010 DJ/singing touring. it's a pretty industrious hiatus.

(plus it's six and a half years between the last EMI single and the first Hairless Toys one, not eight. she kept grafting imo)

i didn't think it amounted to that much material, not three hours anyway, was it mostly all the features etc. she did?

it's not like she disappeared or anything but it was certainly a relative lull in her career, especially compared to how prolific she's been since 2015

(40 minutes of Overpowered bonus tracks and b-sides, Mi Senti is half an hour, 9 headlining collabo and 4 solo singles (many longish - Simulation is 12 minutes!), and a fistful of non-single guest spots and odd tracks. Plus a live EP, but I was only counting "new" songs.)

It's definitely a less prominent period, but I was just eyebrowing at the BBC blurber calling it a "hiatus" when she was quite busy for a middle-aged pop singer at all, let alone one apparently urgently trying every option to release music while her record label was repeatedly collapsing on her, under different management, every ten months. Demon Lover (and all its remixes?) only came out on Myspace! Remember when Myspace was somewhere people put new music?!

1.KINGDOM OF MACHINES

R: They’ve taken the original to a very pure place, accentuated the cold, JG Ballardness of the original! The first track of the record lays it out, this isn’t necessarily going about pure dance music, it’s going to be about mood, big-time!! Oh it makes my heart sing! 🎼 💕

I wanted the record to start with some of the Celtic-Soul/ Large Mammal In Pain wailing from Game Changer. Didn't think the whole song was the right opening. So with a very slight nod in the direction of Padlock, Roisin wails and then is edited into a different track. Also I thought it might be nice to sample a bit of an old Crooked Man release called 'This Machine'. That's where the high male vocal comes from. (I'll sue myself for copyright infringement later).

Me and Roisin rarely talk about the meaning of specific lyrics or instrumentation. A bit like a pair of leaky old dogs, we each scratch at what the other one has done, and then maybe add a little deposit of our own… although we never discussed it, I've always presumed that 'Kingdom of Ends' is about finding yourself stuck on a wheel of physical and spiritual unresolve.

There's a climb of fresh excitement. You feel as if fulfilment can finally be reached...the itch just keeps on itching.

All of that may be a complete misreading of what the song is about, but it's certainly what me and Fat Dave tried to put into the music. It goes up, it goes down but ultimately never resolves.

It felt pretty obvious that for the remix LP some kind of landing should arrive, solid ground could be reached. So that's what 'Kingdom of Machines' is about, imposing a little stability.

But ultimately, right at the end when you think it might be over, the wheel just keeps on turning...

2.ECHO RETURNS

Down to the molecule! Some serious Celtic minimalism on the go here lads! We’re also in Doctor Who territory, inside the machine, backwards and forwards in time! Deep Disco mysticism, machine mythology.

The love story of Echo and Narcissus is such a cracking tale, and luckily well enough known for me to go off at an arty-farty angle without feeling in danger of misrepresenting what Roisin was singing about.

The picture I had in my head when making Echo Returns was of Narcissus dead, floating face down in the languid pool whilst what remains of Echo hovers above, powerless, fragments of her flickering across the water and bouncing between the wet river rocks.

Which is quite pretentious... So as an antidote to the pseudery...

3.CAPABLE RHYTHM

Is just an old version of Incapable with some rhythm guitar busked over the top. Spotlight on Fat Dave!

I’d love to be back in the cellar in Sheffield and hear this get dropped. When I was living in Sheffield years ago, it was always other people who made records that really worked at those underground parties, but this would slap everyone’s arse!
Perfect version, encapsulates it all, so Sheffield.. Its a glamor-stomper! The guitar on this is a special thing of beauty.

4. ASSIMILATION

This song was the first one written for this entire project and it was so long ago, with this remix it all comes flooding back, the spirit of everything.

These piano chords, I feel them so hard, it’s so of my moment right now. I have a feeling that whenever I hear this song in the future, I will be back in this peculiar moment, this era of our lives.

I’m in my happy place.

I was shitting myself doing 'Simulation' cos I always quite liked the original, and unusually for me had never felt the urge to experiment with other versions... But it turned out ok, probably the best thing on the record. It's got more of a traditional "song" arrangement than the main version, which is quite unusual in the world of modern remixes.

5. CROOKED MADAME

Ironically, this is rhythmically straighter and less crooked than 'Shellfish Mademoiselle'. Which was totally intentional. It was an opportune moment for a moment of slightly wonky disco dancing. To help me get the feel, I pictured Murphy doing her old broken robot moves.

Sublime groove, this is a Parrot classic, it just bounces along, total equilibrium in this song. It’s simple, deceptively.

There’s something about Parrot's claps, they’re so fully real and rounded, I recon it’s the claps that keep this whole project together. The rather mechanical structure of the music is humanised!

It has that kind of minimalism, that kind of regimentation that makes you bore down into the very core of yourself, into the very meaning of existence.

There were 75,000 lyrics in the original track or thereabouts, and before it had a title everyone always called it “the Mademoiselle track.” Even though I only say that word once.

6. LESS IS MORE

Another hands in the air moment!! We are in a field at 9am, been dancing all night and we could dance forever!

This is a really good version, one of my favourite tracks on the record. Love it, it’s deep and dark as fuck but still camp as hell!

There was a previously released mix of 'Something More' that we did very quickly, almost as an afterthought. The track was sped up 5bpm and only part of the bass line used. This resulted in the song taking on a darker, deeper vibe …but unfortunately we ran out of time before we could massage the chorus into its new bedding. That'd always niggled me, because there's nothing I like better than a sweet melody riding on a dark undercarriage.

The full remix LP felt like an opportune moment to nag Fat Dave into getting the chorus to work on the truncated b line. Which he did by using musicianly words like "transposition" and "modulation" and other magical musical twattery that I'm too stupid to understand.

7. NAME CHANGER

What a concoction this groove is. Funky and menacing at the same time, a totally unique sound.

The oldest song on Roisin Machine was 'Murphy's Law', which had originally been written for the Overpowered album but didn't make it past the A&R man. For it's eventual release, Murf freshened the vocals up with a couple of extra parts, and 'Game Changer' was a song that evolved out of one of said parts.

For a no doubt very important reason that I can't remember, somewhere along the way, the tune acquired a bit of a soul shuffle, and I liked the idea of picking the remix up with a loping 4/4 kick drum. Slightly Steppers.

This one sounds quite 80s doesn't it?

These days I tend to avoid doing remixes that don't use many vocals from the original songs. For DJs I accept that tunes with just a few rhythmic shards of vocal are easier to sequence... But in dance music that style can be so prevalent that sometimes it's a struggle to find the real primal beating heart of a tune. Everything becomes a single carpet of noise. Or very loud wallpaper.

Anyroad, despite my foibles, I thought it might be fun to forget about the songs for once and just have a bit of this and a bit of that over a bit of something else. Like a megamix or summat.

Great running track this! It has propulsion.
Synths are magic on this track.

9. HARDCORE JEALOUSY

Oh God this is bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad bad! (In a good way, obvs) ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Complex remix to have achieved, It’s an incredible feat! Imagine when I got to the end of this record on first listen, everything was already in its right place, I got to the end, to this track and “Jesus fucking Christ”, I said to myself, “he’s out done himself!”

'Jealousy' is a tune that always contained a lot of kinetic energy. The original rhythm track was giddy disco fluff, which Murf responded to with a lyric about frantic, unstoppable ever building emotion. Like a rush of sugar to the head, the finished article was simple but pleasingly effective.

So we were aghast when record labels interested in releasing it as a single wanted to slow the tempo down. Because apparently "people can't dance to anything faster than 130bpm". Jesus... That's a good proportion of dance music history disappearing down the K-hole innit?
Parrot: 'Hardcore Jealousy' is a response to that. No, we're not going to slow it down.

We're going to make it punch you in the face.

Basically, this record is right up my street, which is handy. But really, I love it. It’s timeless not just something that’s trying to reach for the Zeitgeist or for a few extra sales.

No, it’s a warmer experience than that, warmer than most music around at the moment. And it came from the place of soulful authenticity. #crookedmachine forever 🔥

So - updates!

The Koze album is probably coming late in the Northern Hemisphere summer. Its rumoured title is Hit Parade and it will be released by Ninja Tune.

A single, "Can't Replicate", is available on limited edition vinyl. No word on when - or if - it will be available to stream or download, although it's being used in DJ sets already, like this one for example. (Seems to have a Lil Louis sample running through it). If you follow Róisín on instagram, you might've heard an early version of the track here - while I like the edit's techno throb, I do hope this iteration will become available somewhere down the line, and I kind of wonder if it is the album version as it sounds a lot more...Koze-y.

Then there's another, sunny track that Róisín has been teasing on TikTok - rumoured title "CooCool". See here for a bit of that.

"Can't Replicate" is apparently a 1000-copies vinyl-only release, at least for now, which is a shame because it's essentially "French Kiss" with a slinky diva vocal

also the artwork is the same artist who did the last two Westerman albums, which makes total sense to me

feeling some of those live songs. not feeling “coocool” (“the universe” is fine). deeply not feeling the visual aesthetic of this album.

yeah this seems to be real - the account is in a few FB music groups I'm in, and it seems convincing enough to make me believe it's definitely her own personal/private profile. Really fucking grim when you consider that so much of her profile is based on leaning into being the "hip" choice of gay icon, it feels like the LGBT+ audience are worthy of using for acclaim and profit but not affording autonomy and respect to.

yeah, this is from her Facebook page, and I mean "her" page - her own private profile, not the page you can like and follow her as a fan of an artist. I've seen her pop up in threads on groups like W0rld 0F Ech0es and in the comments of mutual friends, not just recently but a good few times over the years. Much as I would love for this to be fake I don't have much doubt at all about it being real.

someone on that Twitter thread describing this as her "Donna Summer" moment and it does feel apt. She could have kept this private opinion to herself, and been this awful, with the fanbase being none the wiser. The fact she felt compelled to make this comment despite being fully aware it could be screenshotted and shared tells me how little she actually values the fanbase that she's built over the past thirty years.

I'm pretty gutted by this to be honest. This is someone that I would classify as an all-time favourite artist and I have to agree with boxedjoy that it seems especially perverse that she would hold these views when the queer community constitute such a large part of her fanbase.

Her posts are now being boosted by Glinner and his TERF armies, so unless she unequivocally apologises for her ignorance, then frankly I'll...have to check out of this album campaign, unfortunately, and re-evaluate how I engage with her work generally.
