Hello...I only know the Strangers From the Universe album, which I quite like, I hear they were(are?) prolific?...

james e l, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Very. My good friend Brian raves about them and has for years -- I'll hit him up for some recommendations.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, yes, yes, yes!

From what I've heard of them, the one disc of theirs you MIGHT destroy (if you must) would be _Strangers..._.

They've a new album on Communion. Really long, annoying title. Their previous album (_I Hope It Lands_) is my favorite. Similar to stuff like "Cup of Dreams", "Noble Experiment", "The Piston & The Shaft".

And their older Matador releases (_Lonelyville_, _Mother of All Saints_) are snazzy, too. I've heard their BEST release is the _Admonishing the Bishops_ EP (also on Matador).

But you can't go wrong.

David Raposa, Tuesday, 15 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

its really quite a long time since i played the thinking fellers. but i remember Mother of All Saints being one of my favourite records for quite a long time. but some of it is irritating and you have to skip past some of the skitty bits.

Strangers From The Universe has some good stuff on, and some mediocre too.

Where's Officer Tuba, which strangely came out on one of t'local labels (Hemiola of leeds) is a good starting point, but its probably out of print.

there was a compilation album, Soluble Fish with about 25 bands on. the thinking fellers track is great, but ALL the other bands are rubbish!

Tangle is good too.

thinking fellers had (have?) a real pop sensibility but are simulataneously obtuse and often irritating. but they were definitely a very good band, and i think i'll dig out their records this week. thanks for reminding me of them

gareth, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No matter how hard I listen, this band just makes no impact on me. I had Mother Of All Saints for quite a while, and I loved that "Tell Me" song, but the rest of it just slid past. I still have Lovelyville, have probably listened to it a half-dozen times, and couldn't tell you what it sounds like. I do have a good 7-inch where they cover "A Fistfull Of Dollas," that I like.

Mark, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

nine months pass...
I just picked up Strangers From the Universe and I like it a lot. And then I listened to Lovelyville for the first time in a long while and that sounded good, too. I think I might be starting to "get" the Thinking Fellers. What's next?

Mark, Sunday, 17 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You pretty much can't wrong with any of them, though oddly enough, I find "Mother of All Saints" the worst introduction to them... (doodly doodly doodly) "Mother of All Saints" was my first one, and it took me a while to get another rekkid of theirs that really got me salivating for more...

The latest one, "Celebrity Avalanche, etc. etc." would be the best introduction, then work backwards from there..

Yeah, the combo of "Admonishing The Bishops" and "The Funeral Pudding" EPs from 1993 would comprise of the best of their work, IMHO

But alas, "Lovelyville" is their best one, me thinks. For "More Glee" alone. (though "Tangle" comes close)

One of the saddest aspects of the TFUL282 story is that these motherfuckers were one of the best live bands on the planet in their day. They appear to have recorded recently, but gave up touring long ago. A terrible loss.

I agree with the point of view that elevates "Lovelyville" and the EPs, and recommends "Mother of All Saints" for later down the road. I think "Strangers from The Universe" is excellent as well.

southern lights (southern lights), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 18:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've been listening to Mother of All Saints again. It's a very strange album, but the brilliant tracks on it are just really brilliant. Almost everything on the first side of the first lp (I bought it on vinyl my senior year of high school, whee).

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 19:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, TFUL282 were great live. Truly it's a shame that they have pretty much stopped touring. The last time I saw them was at the old Cooler in NYC - I guess that was probably around 1997. They were awesome to behold in that small space. Before that, I saw them twice when I was living in the SF Bay Area, and both times they were also amazing. Lovelyville is my favorite of their albums - it's a shame the sound is rather murky, although I guess that could be considered part of its charm. I also like Wormed By Leonard, Mother of All Saints, Strangers in the Universe, and the Funeral Pudding EP quite a bit.

seconding brian's comment here, especially if "Strangers" is your favorite (mine too). every album has at least a few indelible pop moments though. and live, they were (& probably remain) untouchable, one of the best things about living in the bay area in the 90's.

I remember seeing them open for Negativland in 87 at Gilman Street.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 2 March 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have only heard "Strangers", "Mother of All Saints", and "Bob Dinners..." but all are really enjoyable. Strangers (my favorite) has a really lovely feel to it and the artwork is so neat.

>>one of the best live bands on the planet in their day

Saw 'em at CBGBs in 1990 or 1991 - they were touring behind Tangle. My friend and I were standing by the pool table talking as their set began (they were about the third band on a bill of about eight, and they weren't who we were there to see). We weren't paying much attention, but about three songs in we both stopped talking and looked at each other like, "What the fuck is that band doing?" and headed stageward, and were enraptured for the rest of their set. My friend bought Tangle and a T-shirt afterward. Instant win-over. I bought Lovelyville when it came out, but kinda lost track of them after that.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:11 (twenty years ago)

I saw them this past year! For their two show tour. Portland and SF. Saw the Portland one. They did "More Glee". I can die happy now.

donut christ (donut), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:38 (twenty years ago)

I was a live show convert, too, and experienced a similar WTF!?!? reaction.

briania (briania), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

Wow, I'm actually kinda amazed Jel started this thread, actually! Nothing against him of course. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 19 November 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

Back to my original question (sounds like "Future Days"), it's either "Piston And The Shaft" or something else that I can't think of.

Yes, great band! I saw them about 10 times, the most memorable was the "un-guitar" clinic they put on at the Great American Music Hall in SF with Polvo and The Fucking Champs.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:26 (twenty years ago)

I saw them a bunch, in NYC and cleveland. They did a version of the theme to Rosemary's Baby that was awesome. At the end of one great show I turned to my friend Andy and said "that was great, the only thing that would've made it better is if they played more of the poppy songs that I know, like Narlus Spectre"

...which started playing 2 seconds later as the encore.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:29 (twenty years ago)

I first saw them in 1992 (-gax!) with the Sun City Girls at the Lounge Ax in Chicago. God what a great tour that was, eh? I saw 'em at least two more times that I can remember: once in Madison, WI and another time at Lounge Ax, where they encored with the version of Morricone's "Fistful of Dollars" that they later released on that 7" (this was before that 7" had come out though.) There may have been another show in there somewhere that I'm forgetting; alcohol has ravaged a lot of my memory. Yeah, great great band.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:35 (twenty years ago)

I seen 'em 3 times live, and each one was better than the last. I'm still pissed that they don't tour anymore.

J (Jay), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:43 (twenty years ago)

they toured the west coast in 95 with the boredoms, that was an excellent tour with both bands collaborating on some inspired, improvised jams for encores.

gygax! (gygax!), Saturday, 20 November 2004 01:51 (twenty years ago)

in 1995 maybe, I was visiting my sister in New Orleans and specificly chose the weekend that TFUL was playing. Then they cancelled. It was pretty soon after that they stopped touring, right? I never saw them and very very sad.

o well.

Magic City (ano ano), Saturday, 20 November 2004 02:52 (twenty years ago)

they'll play again. They're like comets now, though. Or solar eclipses. You just have to be there at the right time, and possibly be willing to travel.. being on the West Coast increases your chances.

Best show was an unannounced art shack show in Oakland just underneath a BART station in December of 1999. They went all over the place. So did some of the audience members.. sans clothes. It was a revelry.

(This is where I drunkenly introduced myself to a guy named Bob and slapped him on the shoulder and just made a lot of drunk talk with him, without him talking much back and seeming a bit scared, and only found out later that it was Bob of *Shellac* that I gave the noogie to. oops.)

donut christ (donut), Saturday, 20 November 2004 03:07 (twenty years ago)

I was at that show at Heco's. The floor nearly gave way.once things got going from the dancing and hopping. At one point I ran down to the corner store on the first floor to buy water, couldn't get their attention because they were both whitefaced and staring at the ceiling, so I looked up and saw the impossible BULGE dipping on every downbeat...

Four years after my original post I have to say this is a very interesting band. Definitely a grower. They also strike me as very relevant to what's happening in indie/underground rock right now, too. Be a good time for some reissues.

Anne Eickelberg lives here in Portland now. She's a real estate agent.

When I put "2x4s" on my MP3 blog a few months ago, it got a lot of "holy crap, who's THAT?!?" responses.

was checking out that Brian Hageman solo album again recently... it's super nice. came out between Strangers and I Hope It Lands, home studio messes, but the few songs towards the end really pull the whole thing together.

(Jon L), Thursday, 17 February 2005 01:20 (twenty years ago)

The family of related bands is also huge, including US Saucer, Three Doctors Band, Caroliner, and Horny Genius, but to get into all that would diffuse the impact of the Fellers in this thread much the same as happened in reality.

So classic. I have most of the albums, but I'm always drawn back to Strangers From the Universe. ...and Funeral Pudding. Never had the chance to see them live, except in 1996 and I blew it. Listened more recently to some live shows from earlier in the 90s and was amazing at how loud they could be and how quickly they could shift gears, even mid-song. Why in the world are their Matador albums out of print?

city worker, Monday, 30 June 2008 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

Crazy. People just aren't in the mood for 90s music right now, myself included.

I saw them live in 1994. Easily the best show I saw that year in a year of pretty decent live shows.

Bill in Chicago, Monday, 30 June 2008 18:13 (sixteen years ago)

Sucks about the Matador stuff being out of print, but I'm guessing, sadly, that people have mostly forgotten about the Fellers, which is really a shame. I can't really blame Matador for keeping them out of print for the time being -- especially if you can still find the stuff used without much difficulty. Matador released four of their albums, and if none of the four are still selling, well.. :( (not to mention Ajax's release of The Funeral Pudding, which kinda went OOP immediately, and the CD reissue of Wormed By Leonard, and the OOP Communion issues of I Hope It Lands and Bob Dinners)

Maybe in the 2010s, people will catch up.

'Yeah, the combo of "Admonishing The Bishops" and "The Funeral Pudding" EPs from 1993 would comprise of the best of their work, IMHO" this is very OTM!! I miss getting their records in the mail from Ajax, man I used to love these guys. Also if you can find a certain issue of Bananafish magazine, their was a cd that was great with solo stuff by these guys, along with lots of other guys oddball artist. Maybe it was the first four or five issues compiled?

Mother of All Saints' showing in that poll is just stupid. Was just playing it the other day, wishing it could get a remaster (CD is too quiet) and marveling at how well it holds up. Just skip the annoying tracks...

I dug this band in the '90s though I haven't listened to them since then. Sometimes I feel like Deerhoof kind of has a TFUL282 feel to them, is that weird?

unmetalled world (wk), Saturday, 11 June 2011 04:33 (thirteen years ago)

nah, that makes perfect sense, given what little i know of TFUL. both indie/punk prog rockers. love deerhoof, btw. their "new sneakers" even has a touch of "noble experiment" poignancy (nowhere near as intense, obv).

will check "admonishing" next, due to support in this and the other thread. mother of all saints is the album that derailed me at the time, and i'd like to give it another shot, too, see if i've come around. remember loving a plugz-esque tune called "narlus spectre" once upon a time, god knows where it came from. doesn't seem to appear on any of their more popular releases.

And the piano, it sounds like a carnivore (contenderizer), Saturday, 11 June 2011 06:05 (thirteen years ago)

it's on Wormed By Leonard iirc, also on the 4-song "best of" 7" sampler from that album that Ajax put out in like '92 (The Natural Finger).

I was thinking a little bit more today about those "difficult" pieces on MOAS. Although I appreciate the pared-down song-oriented tracklist someone posted in this (or the other) thread, the spacing of those tracks really helps with the sequencing and overall epic flow of the record.. I think that at the time there was some criticism of teh "practice room" pieces in the press but it was also kind of a statement of purpose by the band. At any rate, "Tuning Notes" has perversely become one of my fave tracks from that record as the years have gone by. It's just such a perfect window into their world, a distillation of the practice room experience.

Duane Barry, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 11:21 (nine years ago)

I can't find it above, but probably said on another thread. They had some of the best lyrics of any band ever, full stop. It's annoying, because they present, historically, as some cute slightly eccentric indie rock band of the 90s. I rarely care about words, but was floored when I started reading the lyric sheets for their albums. It's like suddenly discovering that The Archers of Loaf were up there with Dylan Thomas. Or whatever.

"You can fizz out the top or settle to the bottom or stand still inside a liquid life.
You can float away or melt into the ground, but scientists can watch you through the glass and measure forces pulling you, and measure forces pushing you, until you stand still and make the shadows stop.
Vaporize, solidify. Hummingbird in a cube of ice."

sarahell, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 17:18 (nine years ago)

I had forgotten/did not know that they did a 2011 ATP gig. There's a disappointing practice version of "Piston And The Shaft" on Youtube:

httpx://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afiMfHjQMKI

(change x to s)

but it contains this fabulous comment:

As the fifth viewer of this clip, and a citizen of the United States of America, I say that the Thinking Fellers Union is a national treasure, and should be granted immunity from any and all need to work for a living; they should be given a large practice space underneath the national mall in DC, located, say, under the Washington Monument, with instruments made of gold, and free electricity and infinite credit at the local supermarket.

sleeve, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 17:19 (nine years ago)

my favorite lyrics are the piston and the shaft like

When the car parks in the garage
When the beauty receives her beau
There's a border taut and bold
That's a feeling we'll never know

You're the hard spot on my seat
I'm the drooling bitch in heat
I'm your gravy baster gun
You're my creamy squishy bun
We got a funny situation, you and me
We're the beaver and the hog
But who's biting what and what's eating whom
We're a dripping marsh full of frogs

I've always been in love with this song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czp3wGZ9XUM

Evan, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 17:23 (nine years ago)

always loved "Heavy Head":

You sleep so you won't notice the weight upon your breast
You drift on winds you can't feel, flowing so your dreams won't end
What have you done to manufacture your own fear?
It could last forever - no one can see you in there

Black and rusted handcuffs chain you to your bed
Struggling exhausts you - rest your heavy head
Stop the dream while you can
Lose your mind

Why is it that the 90s seem to have the most inventive chord progressions in the dissonant-yet-melodic category?

I like this band but I've been very slow in getting their discography. I Hope it Lands is the next one for me I think.

They weren't really anything like Cheer-Accident though, more like if Polvo were collectively recovering from head injuries.

JacobSanders, Tuesday, 23 June 2015 22:52 (nine years ago)

I listened to I Hope it Lands; it was amazing. Heard about 25m of the gig too. Lovely.

Then listened to all of Enduring The American Dream by Cheer-Accident and that was even better, but the two bands are both clearly wonderful

alien abduction, no?

I guess so! It's a bit ironic that never occurred to me, given the bloody username I chose for this place.

Happy to see the love for "I Hope It Lands" here, it seems to be their least-mentioned album but it's actually my favourite of the two "pop" TFUL albums (the other being "Strangers").

As someone who spent quite a bit of time studying/playing a lot of Sundanese-style gamelan in the pelog (7-tone) scale, "Hundreds Of Years" lead guitar is definitely the most melodically gamelan-ish rock song I can think of (even moreso than a lot of late-period OOIOO).

I feel like I haven't spent enough time on this thread talking about how staggeringly great this band was, I miss them. I put together a fan compilation of all the odds and ends, and I'm posting here so the thread will nag me into completion/upload, it's all done.

I wish the stuff would get reissued, or something. If the "Eavesdrop" section in the band website link above is for real and not a joke, there may be some conflict? I dunno.

Just so endlessly inventive and good-humored, also a mirror of my life in the 90s, I had been following them since '89 when a friend put "Sister Hell" on a mixtape, when they did the reunion shows in 2000/2004 and wrote "'91 Dodge Van" I was touched. At the last Portland reunion gig (? the one at Berbati's), some guy got up on stage and hugged each band member individually near the end of their (fantastic) set.

Was kind of amazed to go through the tour dates on their site and see that they only played CBGB once in 1990 - the July 28 show I saw. Feel really lucky to have stumbled across them that night.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 21 October 2022 01:22 (two years ago)

By some cosmic miracle they played *three* times in Memphis in 95, each time very much its own thing, each time wonderful. Setlist.fm is no help with this so at least the TFUL site confirms it. The lines for their last 90s tour at the Chicago stop (Lounge Ax) were off-putting and I'd seen them three times recently so I passed, but regret it now. They were the best.

sarahell, Saturday, 29 October 2022 22:58 (two years ago)

Ty Segall is another possible Fellers grand-nephew. But they’re all from California, so perhaps the thread can be found somewhere along the I-5 corridor?

??? Does the writer not know that Ty Segall was also a SF Bay Area band as well as Dwyer's OCS oeuvre and Deerhoof?

sarahell, Saturday, 29 October 2022 23:04 (two years ago)

there was another error in that article but I'm not gonna go back to look for it, anything that raises the band's profile makes me happy tbh

― sleeve, Saturday, October 29, 2022 4:20 PM (fifty-five seconds ago)

there's def Oregon/Bay Area crossover in terms of that aesthetic for sure ... well, probably going up to Seattle with Sun City Girls. ...even though SF is not close to I-5. It's definitely an odd turn of phrase when you are choosing 3 SF Bay bands to connect to a band "from" the SF Bay Area.

Anyway -- I think I am going to just agree with what you said about "anything that raises the band's profile making me happy" because yeah.

sarahell, Saturday, 29 October 2022 23:24 (two years ago)

sleeve, Saturday, 29 October 2022 23:37 (two years ago)

you don't have to apologize, you didn't write the article! not that ignorance/inaccuracies related to the U.S. Interstate system and geography should damn any music writing that contains them ... but, it does provoke the instinctive "you're not from around these parts, are you?" that can often alienate a reader

Bulbous Monocle focuses its lens further into the legacy and archives of the Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. These Things Remain Unassigned — a phrase coined by Brian Hageman, one of the band’s musical snake appendages emanating from its Medusa crown — is presented by Bulbous Monocle as a double LP (gatefold jacket with a twelve page libretto). BM-03 gathers together the band’s singles, compilation tracks, outtakes and never before released gems encompassing the arc of TFUL’s musical corpus. Every track has been surgically remastered by Mark Gergis (Porest/Sublime Frequencies/Mono Pause) with his signature craftsman approach.

This collection is an auditory and visual feast. The extensive booklet included features band ephemera, concert flyers, photographs, and commentary about each track from Mark Davies. Beyond the rare singles and unreleased tracks from the TFUL archives, are cover versions from such disparate artists and composers as: Ennio Morricone, Krzysztof Komeda, The Residents, The Shaggs, Caroliner Rainbow and Pérez Prado.

Old news at this point, but did anyone hear Cup of Dreams sampled in this Yves Tumor song?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSPhsieipTg

With so many older and underappreciated bands getting bigger than ever through tiktok, I've found myself wondering if TFUL282 will ever get the same treatment. Unfortunately Cup of Dreams only has ~150,000 plays on spotify (Noble Experiment is their most played at ~600,000) so I'm not sure that the Yves Tumor sample has helped much.

Guess I'd just like them to get big enough that they could cash in on touring again as I was in middle school and not aware of the band's existence when they did their two reunion shows in 2004.
