If You're Reading This It's Too Late, the new Drake record is out on iTunes.

There is also a 14 minutes video somewhere but the thing is unwatchable, I won't bother posting it.

First hook: Oh my god, oh my god if I die I'm a legend.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:15 (ten years ago)

this is the worst day on earth

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:19 (ten years ago)

worst is like, a sanskrit colloquialism that means "best" right

slothroprhymes, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:22 (ten years ago)

So far this is like he was really proud of Wu Tang Forever and decided to expand on that song. A good thing for me. 6 Man is perhaps my favorite yet.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:29 (ten years ago)

yeah i'm really enjoying this. drunk tho

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:31 (ten years ago)

not sure whether it's good or bad that my previous drinks of the evening are wearing off while listening to this

slothroprhymes, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:35 (ten years ago)

does it make sense to suggest him switching it up stylistically feels a lot less awkward than on previous records?

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:36 (ten years ago)

this sounds kinda great to me

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 February 2015 05:36 (ten years ago)

Did he just say 'I'm Game of Thrones with you Mama' ?

Van Horn Street, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:37 (ten years ago)

yeeeeep

slothroprhymes, Friday, 13 February 2015 05:43 (ten years ago)

goddamn j0rd u r right about that second partynextdoor track

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:53 (ten years ago)

everything is deeply upsetting

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:54 (ten years ago)

wow i'm really angry that partynextdoor actually produced that track and "legend" too fuck this earth

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Friday, 13 February 2015 05:59 (ten years ago)

can't believe i almost missed this as i was on a thread about old people's sweets.

it's all on YouTube btw folks.

piscesx, Friday, 13 February 2015 06:07 (ten years ago)

his soundcloud songs are mostly hit or miss for me individually and this sounds like a bunch of those woven together but idk i think as full project it sounds pretty great together

it's easily the most anti-pop thing he's ever done though

J0rdan S., Friday, 13 February 2015 06:16 (ten years ago)

loving '10 Bands' so far.

also the outro of "preach" -> interlude w/ PARTYNEXTDOOR is absolutely incredible

j. winters (josh), Friday, 13 February 2015 07:45 (ten years ago)

Just spinning "Legend" for the first time now, and to think I was about to go to bed after checking ILM

MrExplorer, Friday, 13 February 2015 08:36 (ten years ago)

Love his flow on "No Tellin"

MrExplorer, Friday, 13 February 2015 08:54 (ten years ago)

First listen done. Other obvious highlights for me are "Star 67", "You and the 6" and "6pm In New York."

I dig it, but it doesn't reach even close to the high water mark of Nothing Was the Same. No anthems like "Hold On We're Going Home" or GOAT beats like "Pound Cake" or any of the other million awesome things about that album but it already grew on me a lot from the beginning to the end.

The internet can't seem to agree on whether this is just a mixtape or his pre-mentioned album Views Frrom the 6 with a new name. Where do you guys weigh in? The fact that he's selling it on iTunes and that he's following the "Beyonce'd!!!!!" model of doing shit I'd say album, but the lack of any singles plus the fact that it doesn't <sound> nearly as good as Nothing Was the Same suggest mixtape. Either way Drake hasn't weighed in and we don't know if there's gonna be a physical release or not. What do yall think?

MrExplorer, Friday, 13 February 2015 09:58 (ten years ago)

wow this mustve been why I had that fever dream last nite

That's exactly what I said when I first saw it drop on iTunes was what's up with all the damn numbers, especially the 6's my sister said maybe drake worships the devil. Lol.

johnny crunch, Friday, 13 February 2015 12:27 (ten years ago)

Was it not common knowledge that he had a mixtape coming early in the year? LOL at this being described as a "project" in the initial rush to report it

Listening now, and it's welcome, but it's very clearly a mixtape

Caramanica re new Drake

curmudgeon, Saturday, 14 February 2015 15:13 (ten years ago)

Part of the burden of bringing softness to hip-hop’s center is the perpetual urge to balance it with something rougher. That’s the phase Drake is in now: on top, defending his turf, while trying to keep his heart pure.

two months pass...

Finally listened to this whole thing yesterday, I keep waiting for the guy to put out a project where I "get" it but idk, beats don't hit for me and all the shit talk about unspecified rappers is off-putting, just comes off as bitter and not particularly confident.

although, part of it is that while he's technically improved I still find his flow pretty rigid/his voice annoying, so maybe those kinda lyrics'd work if I thought he was a better rapper.

nova, Sunday, 12 July 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)

amp drake can be nice, but drake is all about glum drake. "lust for life," "marvins room" and "the motion" are the holy aubrey trinity. "no tellin'" is as close as he gets this time out.

soyrev, Monday, 13 July 2015 03:21 (ten years ago)

ugh "The Motion" one of those soundcloud turds

some dude, Monday, 13 July 2015 04:35 (ten years ago)

noooooo no no

soyrev, Monday, 13 July 2015 06:34 (ten years ago)

even in the anemic greyscale spectrum that is the drake catalog "the motion" is up there with "headlines" as one of the blandest bags of dreck he's made

some dude, Monday, 13 July 2015 06:48 (ten years ago)

No Tellin' is one of the best on the mixtape but Legend/Madonna are def my favorites along with Jungle. Madonna is one of the most overtly sinister things in his catalogue and the fact the same Ginuwine sample from Legend is here really seals the deal. Emphasis on 'overtly' too since he has something like Shot For Me where he is straight-up being emotionally manipulative (through clever pacing in its lyrics and the vocal delivery). And I mean, I was convinced at one point that he didn't seem so bad by the time the song ended (and the plethora of "oh he's such a sweetheart"-esque comments for the song on youtube et al seem to prove I wasn't alone in that).

Jungle sums up the entire mixtape perfectly (iirc 6PM in New York is a bonus track). Drake's entire career is built on convincing people to like him (for various reasons) and the lyrics on that song really get to me. "that's cutting all into my time" eventually turns into "are we still good?". "the things I can’t change are the reasons you love me"... heartfelt? proof he's unwilling to actually try in changing his behaviors? both? I've always liked Drake because he often forces me to think about my own actions and I've only come to realize that I'm also a huge self-centered, critical, ego-driven hypocrite who just wants to love/be loved and feel accepted. It's why the ambiguity of the "I know exactly who you could be" line in Hold On, We're Going Home really makes the song for me or why Headlines is tolerable with all things considered.

misterjoshua, Monday, 13 July 2015 07:21 (ten years ago)

@misterjoshua it's been said that drake manages to make ugly moments somehow romantic. "marvins room" is probably the epitome of that.

Yeah I worked really hard to try to like Meek (before the beef), but can't really get into him even though in theory he should be something i like. His answer track was embarrassing, and he doubled down on the homophobia in the live freestyle

Ma$e-en-scène (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 8 August 2015 21:15 (ten years ago)

Is Drake the first case of a high-profile rapper, who is known mainly as a straightforward rapper (as opposed to a producer like Dr. Dre, mogul type like Diddy, or wildcard character like Eazy E or ODB), not only being accused of having a ghostwriter, but having that accusation more or less confirmed? Because the leaked Quentin Miller reference tracks for "RICO" and "Know Yourself", neither of which Miller is credited on, seem pretty definitive.

I don't follow hip-hop closely, but I get the sense there was a time when this would have been a big deal. But most people seem to be laughing at Meek Mill for even bringing it up, and Drake is getting patted on the back for changing the subject to how Meek's girlfriend is more famous than he is. So have times changed? Would people react differently if the target was someone other than Drake, or if it was someone other than Meek Mill bringing it up?

JRN, Saturday, 8 August 2015 23:00 (ten years ago)

oh there are tons of rappers with confirmed verses written by other people. Run DMC had lyrics written by LL Cool J, Lil Kim had lyrics written by Biggie, Ma$e had lyrics written by Jay-Z. and that's just the tip of the iceberg of ones that are confirmed facts.

The sample is great though. And the chorus melody he jacked from DRAM

I thought I had never heard Drake before seeing the vines of him playing tennis and throwing pepperonis on a pizza I am sure i have heard this before with the talking on the cellphone thing. If my wellbeing holds out enough that I can brave the EOY playlist again in a couple of months I imagine I will hear it again then

saer, Friday, 23 October 2015 13:29 (nine years ago)

I seem to have lost some punctuation along the way, its been a difficult day

saer, Friday, 23 October 2015 13:29 (nine years ago)

it is pretty clear drake is a scumbag and i can def see "trash emotions" for sure. but i think

however i think hotline bling is a great song, production is great, that sample is so good, the whole thing is very sparse, the rhythm is great. it is a classic drake song. imo it is also a very hilarious song, drake is so clearly the loser here, his girl found better friends, is having way more fun, is going out partying having a great time without drake, fuck that dork, she doesn't need him, drake is sad and lonely and bitter and petty, "you used to stay at home and be a good girl" is such a shitty line yes but imo we're never meant to believe drake here, he's just bitter

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 15:54 (nine years ago)

like i don't think you have to like drake's persona to enjoy this song, it's a super catchy song and you can also witness drake being a sorry ass loser who's left out

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 15:55 (nine years ago)

i'd always rather someone own their ugliest emotions than hide them through coded nice-guy shit (as drake occasionally did earlier on, which is why i dont like so far gone and thank me later as much), regardless of my opinion of those emotions

(and besides, anyone who sez they havent been as petty as drake is on this song at some point in their lives over some woman or man is lying through their teeth)

longneck, Thursday, 29 October 2015 16:54 (nine years ago)

oh c'mon drake has never set himself up as the fall guy of his songs, his popularity is entirely predicated on people identifying with him

i hear this song as legitimising to millions of bros their irrational dumb possessive controlling petty jealousy and weird ideas about women

(i have lurked on messageboards geared towards that type of person and it's kind of disturbing to hear MRA/PUA-esque sentiments and language mirrored in pop AND THEN PRAISED AS SENSITIVITY)

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:48 (nine years ago)

and though "owning his ugliest emotions" has been the get-out clause for dickhead artists forever, it makes absolutely no sense when it's performed with smugness and cockiness rather than self-loathing

lex pretend, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:50 (nine years ago)

i don't get cockiness from hotline bling, and i think it is easy to see drake as the fall guy in this song even if he doesn't, though tbh i think there are plenty of lines in the tune ("some girls i've never seen before") that suggest that this girl is two steps ahead of drake and he knows it, that's why he's writing a petty-ass jealous song about her

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:55 (nine years ago)

also i'm not quite sure about my own relationship right now w/ music that has "weird ideas about women." i mean all these future tapes are pretty high quality music with some complete fucking garbage being said about women, i'm not really seeing all the same people ragging on drake for "soft misogyny" also ragging on future (though definitely there are some)

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:57 (nine years ago)

also i'm not quite sure about my own relationship right now w/ music that has "weird ideas about women."

when i say this i mean i just haven't quite worked out a coherent position, not that i think it is a positive thing necessarily to listen to misogynist music

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:59 (nine years ago)

his popularity is entirely predicated on people identifying with him

it's...not hard to identify with doing or saying shitty things...we're generally a shitty species?

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 29 October 2015 19:59 (nine years ago)

also i don't think you have to be a MRA/PUA dipshit to enjoy a drake song

marcos, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:00 (nine years ago)

tbf the emotions are even more genuine in future, ugly as they get, which is why i think some ppl who despite drake for those reasons can buy it when future says it. i have this problem more with the weeknd than with either future or drake, also it's considerably worse music

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:01 (nine years ago)

slothroprhymes, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:05 (nine years ago)

Song sounds great, but esp the bridge lyrics seem unfortunate - better if drake had focused on whining abt how he lost genuine relationship to hometown love interest bcz of superficial jetset lifestyle than telling her to stay the way he remembers her and at home :S

niels, Thursday, 29 October 2015 20:17 (nine years ago)

What I don't buy here is that we can't enjoy music we *don't* identity with. I don't listen to Drake on this song and put myself in his shoes, but it's been stuck in my head 24/7 pretty much since it dropped (not quite, I was initially a "Right Hand" partisan) and I've never minded it being there. Last I checked, only liking music that affirms your identity is mostly a sign of being 15. That said, I do prefer the extra bit of magic the Erykah version adds.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 October 2015 21:35 (nine years ago)

I just spent forty-five minutes grading blog posts for my class. For this assignment requiring students to trade media with a classmate (i.e. watch her TV shows, listen to her music, get a Snapchat account, etc), I counted four Drake references. Sample: "I had not taken Drake seriously but now I am listening to him in a different way" or "One thing I learned about X is that he listens to a lot of Drake."

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 29 October 2015 21:38 (nine years ago)

it's kind of amazing he hasn't had a #1 yet cuz that dude is the center of pop for young ppl, more than taylor swift even. just across all the demos in that age range. i can't think of any other thing in pop culture that makes me feel such a generation gap.

But I guess that's Drake for ya.

human and working on getting beer (longneck), Friday, 6 November 2015 08:35 (nine years ago)

last i remember was that the 'working on excellence' acronym was debunked and he was just saying woe short for woadie, which is the first time i'd ever heard of woadie being abbreviated in that way, and even if toronto has wards it just feels like another example of drake biting a southern rap trope tbh.

I have to confess to not listening to much Drake (being more busy trying to find my teeth in the lake, or w/e), but I think this is a great song, and I also think it's really myopic and just a bad reading to see the lyrics as endorsing some kind of butthurt MRA POV about women. I mean, butthurt yes, but much more in a pathetic way that the song is self-aware about (although the speaker is not).
