had a dream just now that there was a song here that a load of ilm's dance massive responded to with an ecstatic 'tat tat tat' and i booted it up, prepared to roll my eyes, and it came in with a mighty swoosh and quite a slow 'tat tat tat' drum machine swipe, then settled into the most purely aquatic & hymnal ambient dance anthem, all was still and calm, i was back in my childhood bedroom and the walls were painted a luminous deep blue, then i awoke wondering if that song existed and whether it would make this poll

My sincerest apologies for not voting, as my projected top five for Night of the Assassins would have done it possibly better justice. "Dull lo-fi guitar jam" my foot, that shit's incendiary beyond a plane we barely know. Glad to see Hornets place, at least. If anyone knows of music of that calibre produced currently, please let me know.

They used to play French Kiss on the radio and cut out before the orgasmic breakdown and even then it was unbelievably exciting to 13 year old me. Seemed to open up a whole new world and still works a dance floor like little else.

I always preferred Reload's A Collection of Short Stories generally to anything off of 76 14.

14:31 was on my longlist at #66 - a truly sonorous & thoughtfully-composed piece of techno. I'm way behind on this now and I can confirm that Herbert Hancock can write an extraterrestrial jam, maybe even a sex jam - sexier than Lil Louis at any rate, and definitely not of this earth. Krautrock obv mega-classic, quite like War as well. we have to watch a film now so maybe more of your favourite hot takes later

Orbital and Hendrix have stuff I voted for yet to come but those are very, very great as well, and I look forward to Comus especially

Comus sounded intense and extremely germane to my interest in British pastoralia and especially British supernatural-pastoral - it keeps its secrets well-hidden but lets out enough of the magic to ensure you'll keep looking. Very, very intriguing. I can see myself loving this a lot after a few repeats

It's a beauty I don't know why I didn't think to nominate it. Roger doesn't sing lead vocals on it so it isn't totally representative of most of their sound. In fact I should have nominated "Maalgard Suite", a live epic that resurfaced after decades, which is totally brilliant.

Like every poll, I voted for what I already knew and didn't do any extra listening. But I did learn about the long album version of "The World Is a Ghetto" for the first time--only knew the single edit from Greatest Hits. It was one of two songs ("Jenny Ondioline" the other) where I like the shorter version better but voted for it anyway.

Malgaard Suite is amazing and Lindsay Cooper was a much better fit for the band than that shit flautist on First Utterance, but since the only recording of it is a crap audience tape it's probably always going to be a curio. Honestly its release had me gobsmacked- almost every band will tell you about the "lost classic" they had, and they're nearly all shit, but the Malgaard Suite is markedly better than anything on First Utterance. The unrecorded second part of it has taken on a mythic status to me not unlike the second, and altogether stranger, part of "Kubla Khan". I actually didn't vote for Comus at all because I figured other people would take up the slack, and given that "The Herald" is the inferior of the epics on _First Utterance_ I'm not disappointed.

Glad to see one of my noms make it. Most of them were obscurantist that I wasn't sure any of them would make it. Mind you I didn't have "72 Nations" on my list until 46, but hell, there's some stuff I nominated that I didn't vote for at all...

Future Days is my favourite Can album by some margin, and Bel Air maybe my favourite song. instead of drawing you straight in like a lot of Can material, it paints the scenery for you first so you get a good look at it. after a while you just kinda wash into it.

I've only got the original CD pressing, but I really can't imagine listening to it without the dirt, the clutter. That's what sets it apart and humanises it from quite a lot of 70's progressive music. Hugh Hopper's scuzzy bass and Ratledge's jarring organ are just perfect for the album.

The rest of the album is (imo) very, very good (especially Out-Bloody-Rageous and to a slightly lesser extent Facelift...really wild moods they evoke here) but Moon In June is just...colossal. It's got everything. I've pretty much got the entire thing memorised, but so many great moments, so many wonderful touches. It's about being young, being lost...nothing else represents these things quite so well for me.

After any music list I make, I find myself feeling sort of, reproached by the gaps in my knowledge of pop music from the last 50+ years. That sensation was particularly pointed after typing up my ballot for this poll. All of this just to say this: I don't think I've ever heard any Soft Machine song. Been on my radar forever but always slipped through my cracks.

Wipers us I think my seventh? to place. That album is one of my favorites and long stretches spent with The Fall have given me appreciation for the punk-as-fake-krautrock mini-genre...

What an exciting evening of music.

This was my #1. I concede that it's not the 'best' track here, but the tide of youth attached to it is unignorable. Such tremulous, emotional instability! Such a spiteful, vicious beast of a song. Saw them perform a seventeen minute version of it at the Oval Space in Bethnal Green about a year ago and was completely blown away.

And while I'm here, Alice Coltrane has been far and away my favourite discovery of the poll. I'm frankly affronted she's not been recommended to me before. Insanely beautiful!

My opinion of Of Montreal generally ranges from "yeah, this is decent" to "no, thanks". "The Past Is A Grotesque Animal", though, is epic and harrowing and utterly mesmerizing every time I hear it.

"In My Time Of Dying" was my number one. Not my favorite Zep song, but they're one of my top three bands and it's a very, very good song indeed, so what the hey.

i didn't vote but happy to see that a lot of my nominations have placed already!

BTW, anyone listening to that Richard Dawson track is invited to hear the full 16-minute version on Spotify as well as the shorter Youtube, because the shorter version omits frankly one of the all-time intros

Destroyer destroying the ILX EOY albums poll was one of those great moments in realising the majority of the board and I were on fundamentally different cruises, but I got over it ok

Having caught up, a few things:

- Voted for Clara, one hell of a piece of music. Meat-punchingly good.

- Shamefully never heard Soft Machine before, though theoretically they always should have been right up my street. Moon in June is nice, not earth-shattering but I'll probably have to listen to it a few more times.

- Never heard Wipers before either, pretty good. Another one to add to the ever-growing list of things I need to investigate more.

- I'd sworn off saying anything negative on this thread, like anyone cares anyway, but some of these songs make it haaaaarrrdd

i am very surprised about how few prog-rock has made it onto the list yet. 40 years ago epic was more or less equal to prog. from the classic period, the seventies up till now it was just "moon in june" and "heart of the sunrise". pink floyd, genesis, king crimson etc. will surely feature in the top 50, i suppose. "youth of america" is such a great fierce song to listen to driving in bad autumn weather on the motorway, it has got so much punch. btw the whole album is perfect, probably my fave record of the eighties.

First time I've ever properly listened to Genesis and I really enjoyed that track.

But I'm resigned to the fact that only my King Crimson, VDGG and Godspeed picks have any chance in the rundown now because I feel like my black/avant-metal picks would have placed already if they would at all.

classical nomination supplemental thread

chances of any of them getting a showing here are looking kind of slim

I feel kind of bad because I ended up cutting most of my classical noms for things I really hold dear, though what difference it would have made I don't know

I didn't expect to vote for "Emily" (I adore "Only Skin") but doing my due diligence, its beauty struck me. All these intricate melodic lines, with a lush, generous arrangement that, IMO, never gets too baroque, with so many sudden twists, it's a beautiful, enchanting labyrinth. So what if she sounds like a Muppet Bjork swallowed a frog.

Been listening to Moon in June and what do people get out of this? Sounds fairly tedious apart from the sad tinge in Wyatt's voice (as long as you don't pay attention to the lyrics, seems he is dissatisfied with life on the road and maybe a woman, not caring enough to decode any further) and the only time there is some music is with the violin or odd guitar sound threatening to break out from the proggy run - so much for jazz, the improv just feels constipated, Wyatt letting go in his voice just goes on to sound ugly - and for a guy whose voice is routinely described as beautiful he does let out the effects box on it. That can either come off as extra textures and play (Stevie Wonder) but here its some padding out at the end.

as long as you don't pay attention to the lyrics

use of childish register to invoke supreme nostalgia -> it's actually a folk song -> perhaps even a meditation upon losing one's idyllic pastoral childhood while trying to cling onto sophisticated urban youth -> it finds its resolution (after an instrumental flare-up you mistreat - "odd guitar sound" - there's no guitar here except for bass, and 'constipated' - it is all, all building up to the finale) in pure psychedelia, a barely-coherent surreal demented wonderland of timeshifted violins, weird drones, electronic effects and a sense of absolute paranormal calm

you're trying to rationalise the song as a muso would, but that isn't what you do with wyatt, he's not king crimson

The important part (for me) is the song part, which has a beautiful flow and is put together so ingeniously. there was an odd treatment of [insert instr here] that sounded like the things I've heard ppl do with guitars.

The usual problems with prog jazz like this is that humourless muso quality. I do like Crimson at times because they actually allow for some chaos (or something that you wouldn't expect) when they get ppl like Jaime Muir in. When Moon in June just settles into that run after Wyatt stops going on its like watching Formula 1: cars going round a track with speed and little risk of crashes (or overtaking). Everyone sounding quite respectful of each other's spaces.

That version was cited above and his 'amusing lyrics' tend to support what you are saying - why change the lyrics if this is such an amazing meditation on something or other.

It is psych, sort of... really it's Robert Wyatt Music (whatever that is) with 'jazz' elements almost bolted on to give the musicians in the band (OK, Mike Ratledge) something to do, but I like those bits too. Just listening to the next track, there's a lot of Zappa in there.

I said its prog jazz - there is a difference. xp = Obviously they've heard all the rock and jazz but (despite their apparent amateurish-ness) its a fairly convincing copy of progressive stuff I've heard (the dull bits). xp = lol. Might work if I hear this with the rest of Third.

The Genesis song is the cutest thing I've ever heard! Maybe Peter Gabriel is lovely after all.

If you can't hear the magic in this then fine, but accept it's there for some of us - also, don't extrapolate from a live version with extra lyrics the lyrical worthlessness of the original, you grand troll

There's not exactly a lot of guitar, but it's there from ca.1:30 to 2:00, though it's possible that it's speeded up bass guitar, although there's no actual bass guitar in the rest of the solo Wyatt bits. Similar 'guitar' appears on some tracks on "Rock Bottom"

As I said it could be, speeded up, it's not something a guitarist would have played, in much the same way that a lot of his keyboard playing is not what a 'proper' keyboard player (like Mike Ratledge, for instance) would play.(xp)

i am a big fan of brian eno but i never understood the appeal of music for airports. through hollow lands from before and after science did nail the aspect of aimlessness and neutrality of music so much better. how i love that piece.

what is the relation between djed and joana newsom? i don't like her as not only does her voice annoy me a lot but the music simply bores me to death, it is all so mechanic. whereas djed builds up nicely and has got some kind of mystery about it. i heard it first in a bookshop in massachusetts almost 20 years ago and i had to find out what it was immediately.

the album version of 'Don't Let the Stars...' is way more satisfying than Ewan's remix, if only for the way it ends, with the static/feedback gradually drowning out her vocals in a perfect simulation of death/dissolution/loss of radio contact/burning up in the atmosphere. the remix just sort of lumbers along for the last 4 minutes, and the perfunctory rocket sound effect at the end is a perfect example of anticlimax. but the original is only 7 minutes long, so I guess it isn't a true epick.

not the Dylan song i voted for, but it's a certified classic, particularly when you hear it in the context of H61RV as a dynamic counterpoint to what came before. Desolation's wisdom is more calculated than heard elsewhere on the album, delivered from afar, less focused on the small details perhaps, but more aspiring in terms of abundance and reach. up until then, the ideas had flown restlessly and with abandon, hustling for shape and meaning at the point of delivery. Desolation is the perfect, harmonising bookend.

I really thought Street Life would be a top 10 track. I've never met anyone who didn't love it.
