Didn't see a recent thread for this. She just released the second single

"dance like we're making love" is pretty good
― dyl, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 05:45 (ten years ago)
yeah, this is good. the original "i bet" completely failed to inspire enthusiasm but the atl bass remix might have sparked my first interest in this project...

this new one is beauuuutiful, but also still a big fan of 'i bet'
YOUR BITCH OVER THERE!THAT STARE THAT STARE!THAT ONE RIGHT THERE!YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH!
― uberweiss, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:12 (ten years ago)
Just hearing "I Bet" for the first time... those ad-libs :(
― Evan R, Tuesday, 28 April 2015 14:24 (ten years ago)
This album is as entirely lacking in personality as everyone inaccurately thought she was all these years :(((((
― lex pretend, Thursday, 30 April 2015 21:57 (ten years ago)
I don't hear anything special in "Dance Like We're Making Love" at all. Will give the album a listen this weekend but my hopes aren't high.
― bae sremmurd (monotony), Thursday, 30 April 2015 23:04 (ten years ago)
don't remember any of the new tracks that preceded it, but extreeeeeeemely besotted with "kiss & tell"
― uberweiss, Friday, 1 May 2015 00:01 (ten years ago)
first run-through and this was overall pretty poor. don't see myself revisiting this in full anytime soon.however, "kiss & tell" and "one woman army" are nice and "only one" is a decent bonus track (mostly because of that one melody).
― misterjoshua, Friday, 1 May 2015 00:34 (ten years ago)
"i bet" sounds MUCH better within the context of the whole record if you ask me
― j. winters (josh), Friday, 1 May 2015 01:43 (ten years ago)
i read someone describe "kiss & tell" as the "livin' it up" of this album so that one has me excited at least
― bae sremmurd (monotony), Friday, 1 May 2015 01:52 (ten years ago)
man there are some real stinkers here :(
― j. winters (josh), Friday, 1 May 2015 01:54 (ten years ago)
Some of the tracks are mortifying. Ciara is not the singer to whom I go for insistent protestations like "I'm a bad muthafucka I'm a bad mutahfuckah." In 2006 she didn't have to insist.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 May 2015 01:58 (ten years ago)
love hearing the "juicy fruit" beat in the bridge of "kiss & tell," a great little moment i wish there was much more of throughout the rest of the record
― j. winters (josh), Friday, 1 May 2015 02:10 (ten years ago)
I enjoy a good chunk of this, but even the bits I enjoy are kind of like "oh this is pleasant" instead of wanting to go listen to them again. Things do pick up pretty dramatically after I Bet though (which I've always liked).
― Greer, Friday, 1 May 2015 02:14 (ten years ago)
"Give Me Love" could be a low key Ariana Grande over '02 Kylie but it's not bad.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 1 May 2015 02:19 (ten years ago)

also why is this in a track about her mother
"stuck on you" was the one song that rose above the dross on one listen, "one woman army" is great but obviously just an offcut from the last album campaign (and another reminder of how tortuous her album campaigns have been)
― lex pretend, Friday, 1 May 2015 07:55 (ten years ago)
it's all very weird for me bcuz like, i still listen to the last album and it's still really kind of insane. i'm seeing her on Tuesday but i don't know what to expect! it's like there are 2 Ciaras: the Ciara that makes songs like SOPHOMORE and the Ciara that is completely devoid of personality. i mean i'll listen again but when i first heard DANCE LIKE WR MAKIN LOVE and I BET i was liiiike ... i KEPT ON LOOKIN.
― surm, Sunday, 3 May 2015 10:56 (ten years ago)
ok first of all i didn't fully realize until now that the whole album dropped. when exactly did that happen? umm...
also i'm listening to it and so far nothing is calling out to me except the v beginning of Jackie. like 20 seconds beginning.
― surm, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:52 (ten years ago)
but i feel like have to get into it bc i'm seeing her TOMORROW. like i want to be able to enjoy what i'm hearing. it's like i have to crash for a final.
― surm, Monday, 4 May 2015 22:53 (ten years ago)
Good songs: "Dance Like We're Making Love," "Lullaby," "Kiss and Tell" (my favorite electric piano melody in a while -- as haunting as LL's "Doin' It")," "Give Me Love."
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 4 May 2015 23:13 (ten years ago)
"Kiss and Tell" = 10/10 fantastic song, total classic, will be caning this one all year long
rest of the album = at this stage seems kinda like 4/10 but will give it another shot or two
― bae sremmurd (monotony), Monday, 4 May 2015 23:18 (ten years ago)
kiss and tell is pretty
only one is making me happy right now
― surm, Monday, 4 May 2015 23:35 (ten years ago)
woah kiss and tell on 2nd listen
why wasn't this the 1st single
― surm, Monday, 4 May 2015 23:48 (ten years ago)
because "I Bet" had to ride the wave of petty breakup songs that dominate urban radio these days
― some dude, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 01:27 (ten years ago)
it's actually not that bad
maybe a grower
― surm, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 03:35 (ten years ago)
i asked my boyfriend if this album was an ode to JACKIE ONASSIS
i was like what, and he cracked up
still don't really get the title
― surm, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 03:36 (ten years ago)
it's her mom's name, right
― some dude, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 04:42 (ten years ago)
i think so?
― surm, Tuesday, 5 May 2015 12:15 (ten years ago)
i'm reading the "kiss & tell" praise upthread and part of me assumes you guys just mean "stuck on you"? "kiss & tell" seems of a piece with the colourless, characterless rest to me
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 07:53 (ten years ago)
okay so Ciara was great. she can really sing, it was touching. she sang I Got You at the end and really got into it. she danced. she played I Run It, which, don't get me started, and Ride, and Goodies, and 1-2 Step, and Promise, and Jackie and 4 songs or so from the new album that sounded great live. one of the best nights i've had in a long long time!
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 13:34 (ten years ago)
I was gonna go but work got in the way :(
― 龜, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 13:40 (ten years ago)
fuck! she was so on time and on point. it was kind of inspiring.
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 13:41 (ten years ago)
"kiss & tell" is incredible, seems like ciara's entry into the "love me harder"/"style" canon
― J0rdan S., Wednesday, 6 May 2015 14:25 (ten years ago)
definitely is "Kiss and Tell" and "Only You" that are my highlights so far
Kiss and Tell is kind of like a Body Party p. 2 to my ears
oh and she played Body Party o course
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 14:27 (ten years ago)
Yep. It's one of the album's few successful attempts to Ciara-fy pop sounds of the day ("Dance..." is the other).
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 6 May 2015 14:27 (ten years ago)
so perfectly chill
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)
and some weird 90s sort of rock thing that i hear when the chorus hits. <3
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
also All Good is some underrated Janet vibes
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:38 (ten years ago)
My buddy in the office told me that BMF also stands for black mafia family, which has ties to GA. just found that interesting after I read Alfred's comment about how CiCi doesn't need to insist that she's a bad motherfucker.
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 15:58 (ten years ago)
and given that the song is about her mom and she says "if you been through what i been through, then you'd be poppin this shit too" is just kind of ... woah. sorry just trying to wrap my mind around this concept.
― surm, Wednesday, 6 May 2015 16:00 (ten years ago)
i am so completely about this song

― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 7 May 2015 20:45 (ten years ago)
i dig this album a lot more than her last couple. she was overdue to work with folks like Dr. Luke, of all the R&B stars who leaned towards dance pop and took flack for it, she's actually better suited to it than some of the harder-edged R&B she had been focusing on.
― some dude, Thursday, 7 May 2015 21:11 (ten years ago)
Totally agree re the Dr. Luke productions. They sound tailored to her rather than she forced to fit to a one-size-fits pattern.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 May 2015 21:17 (ten years ago)
Have no problem calling this her best since 2006 but it's still not great.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 7 May 2015 21:18 (ten years ago)
yea definitely this album is growing on me, the fun filled dance vibes, especially seeing it live. and completely agree with Brad's comments above.
still can't rate it above the self titled tho, those deep cuts kill me.
― surm, Thursday, 7 May 2015 21:35 (ten years ago)
you guys are nutty. basic instinct is a thousand times better than this
― Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 7 May 2015 22:00 (ten years ago)
i liked a couple songs on it a lot but it was mostly Terius being terrible
― some dude, Thursday, 7 May 2015 22:15 (ten years ago)
'you can get it' and 'i run it' are two of my fav ciara songs and two of my fav terius songs so those alone put it way up there for me
― Jacques_Lamure, Thursday, 7 May 2015 22:19 (ten years ago)
yea, me too, along with Ride. (Ride was on it right?) but agreed that the rest of the album is INCREDIBLY spotty. still, having those high highlights goes a long way so it's a tough call. when she played I Run It at the show i literally lost it. it has literally influenced half of my musical endeavors.
― surm, Thursday, 7 May 2015 23:32 (ten years ago)
you'll have to excuse my geekdom - i hadn't been to a concert like that in years!!
― surm, Thursday, 7 May 2015 23:57 (ten years ago)
oh and "speechless" !
― surm, Friday, 8 May 2015 02:43 (ten years ago)
i've always loved ciara's harder edge, but if the dance-pop here was on the level of "living it up" i wouldn't be complaining. i find it quite hard to separate the actual ciara albums we got from the vast swirls of leaked/unofficial tracks that accompanied each of them - it's probably why i hold fantasy ride and basic instinct in such high esteem, it's probably why i stan for her at all tbh. going on finished product alone
the evolution > basic instinct > fantasy ride > ciara > goodies > jackie
going on singles
the evolution > goodies >>>>>>> basic instinct/ciara/fantasy ride > jackie
going on eras and encompassing all the trax that made her special
fantasy ride > the evolution > basic instinct > ciara > goodies > jackie
― lex pretend, Friday, 8 May 2015 06:59 (ten years ago)
New album far superior to Basic Instinct IMO. It's no Fantasy Ride, but who knew straight up pop (I nearly said teen pop) would suite Ciara so well? And "I Bet" is a single of the year candidate for me.
― Jeff W, Friday, 8 May 2015 09:58 (ten years ago)
glad people are liking it so well!! i didn't rly know what ILX thought about Ciara Ciara - but i just love it. she's come out saying it's one of her most important/cohesive albums, and i p much agree.
― surm, Friday, 8 May 2015 15:26 (ten years ago)
Basic Instinct is the only one of her albums I care about as a discrete work
― The Reverend, Saturday, 9 May 2015 03:30 (ten years ago)
i rly need 2 revisit it
― surm, Saturday, 9 May 2015 04:49 (ten years ago)
i still think this album title is half the reason the album is as good as it is
― surm, Sunday, 10 May 2015 04:41 (ten years ago)
tbh the title track is growing on me major
― surm, Monday, 11 May 2015 15:08 (ten years ago)
kiss and tell + all good + one and only is a crrazy run
― surm, Monday, 11 May 2015 15:57 (ten years ago)
This album isn't as bad as I was expecting from the reviews but it's a real slog to get through a good chunk of the middle.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 08:00 (ten years ago)
i feel like it gets good in the middle! i've been getting different views on which songs are ppl's favorites which i think ppl agree is a good sign? also i spotted some pretty rave reviews of the album esp. in conjunction with the tour that were posted in the past few days (the Times, Billboard, VIBE etc). they didn't get it *all* right (i still think she has one of the most expressive voices in the business), but they did her well.
― surm, Tuesday, 12 May 2015 17:08 (ten years ago)
the delivery on each track is impeccable. she believes it. that saves the album.
― surm, Friday, 15 May 2015 02:22 (ten years ago)
ref: Lullaby
― surm, Friday, 15 May 2015 02:43 (ten years ago)
it is Madonna's "Cherish," but Ciara. And the opening of "Stuck on You" screams "Vogue."
― surm, Friday, 15 May 2015 02:48 (ten years ago)
Today I realised the title track reminds me of Farrah Abraham's debut album.
― boxedjoy, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 18:09 (ten years ago)
i think if she had just subbed out the lyrics "i'm a bad motherfucker" for something else it would be kind of a perfect song? i dunno i keep listening to it, i can't stop
― surm, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 23:50 (ten years ago)
i don't think there's anything wrong with that line. i just watched my wife push out a baby and i think she's a bad motherfucker.
― some dude, Tuesday, 19 May 2015 23:56 (ten years ago)
see that's what i wanted to hear someone say! thank you. i've been on the fence about it and tbh i think u just converted me.

― The Reverend, Wednesday, 20 May 2015 06:06 (ten years ago)
idk "I proceed to break it down like that" is a boast very much in character like "I'm a bad motherfuckah" isn't.

the good cuts off this record are top quality (i would say there are about 8.) also that's how i'm feelin' is fun. this is a deceptive album.

Luke's done some interesting non-Luke sounding stuff recently
just finished reviewing it for tomorrow's Jukebox
just getting the chance to talk to her was one of the biggest moments in my life, i will cherish it forever.
― surm, Sunday, 2 August 2015 16:35 (ten years ago)
Finally saw the video and even that's unremarkable in the context of the ciara videography. The song is entirely unmemorable and bland.
― lex pretend, Sunday, 2 August 2015 22:13 (ten years ago)
disagree. it's by the books, but it's not bland. it's true to herself. at first i had the same reaction, but if you listen to her vocals on the chorus, you hear the entirely un-bland commitment.
― surm, Monday, 3 August 2015 03:26 (ten years ago)
the chorus feels both tense and unforced to me, i think it's great
― J0rdan S., Monday, 3 August 2015 04:03 (ten years ago)
good way to put it
― surm, Monday, 3 August 2015 04:17 (ten years ago)
I don't even see how it's by the books. It sounds like a 2015 pop take on Genesis' "Tonight Tonight Tonight" which is a big part of why I love it.
― Tim F, Monday, 3 August 2015 04:59 (ten years ago)
you just meant "in the air tonight" i guess, the keyboard line is basically ITAT with a few extra bars
― cock chirea, Monday, 3 August 2015 06:53 (ten years ago)
i don't really follow ciara and only dip my toe in this kind of music occasionally, but i really quite like this album. so i guess it's typical that the heads in this thread were disappointed.
― (no offence to people) (dog latin), Monday, 3 August 2015 08:50 (ten years ago)
lot of the songs on this record reveal themselves over time. my girlfriend plays "that's how i'm feelin'" all the time and i love that song now

Heard The Breakfast Club shame Ciara today for how she's raising her kid (she let him wear Russell Wilson's jersey!). The segment just went on and on and on; I feel awful for her
― Evan R, Monday, 3 August 2015 14:51 (ten years ago)
the breakfast club is p dumb so i would take it with a grain of salt. also I Got You is the only mommy song i can stomach and she clearly gives a big fuck about her son so that's just bad "journalism"
― surm, Monday, 3 August 2015 15:06 (ten years ago)
also i think she's pretty over feeling awful for not getting all of the media feedback that she deserves, which is good for her.
― surm, Monday, 3 August 2015 15:08 (ten years ago)
re "Kiss & Tell": it's nice to hear a song from a woman's pov about her man working it for her, especially set to a "Doin' It"-style electric piano.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 3 August 2015 15:35 (ten years ago)
i still can't even talk about that song i want it to be on the radio over and over. there's something about the bass
