"dance like we're making love" is pretty good

yeah, this is good. the original "i bet" completely failed to inspire enthusiasm but the atl bass remix might have sparked my first interest in this project...

This album is as entirely lacking in personality as everyone inaccurately thought she was all these years :(((((

I don't hear anything special in "Dance Like We're Making Love" at all. Will give the album a listen this weekend but my hopes aren't high.

don't remember any of the new tracks that preceded it, but extreeeeeeemely besotted with "kiss & tell"

first run-through and this was overall pretty poor. don't see myself revisiting this in full anytime soon.
however, "kiss & tell" and "one woman army" are nice and "only one" is a decent bonus track (mostly because of that one melody).

"i bet" sounds MUCH better within the context of the whole record if you ask me

i read someone describe "kiss & tell" as the "livin' it up" of this album so that one has me excited at least

love hearing the "juicy fruit" beat in the bridge of "kiss & tell," a great little moment i wish there was much more of throughout the rest of the record

I enjoy a good chunk of this, but even the bits I enjoy are kind of like "oh this is pleasant" instead of wanting to go listen to them again. Things do pick up pretty dramatically after I Bet though (which I've always liked).

"Give Me Love" could be a low key Ariana Grande over '02 Kylie but it's not bad.

"stuck on you" was the one song that rose above the dross on one listen, "one woman army" is great but obviously just an offcut from the last album campaign (and another reminder of how tortuous her album campaigns have been)

it's all very weird for me bcuz like, i still listen to the last album and it's still really kind of insane. i'm seeing her on Tuesday but i don't know what to expect! it's like there are 2 Ciaras: the Ciara that makes songs like SOPHOMORE and the Ciara that is completely devoid of personality. i mean i'll listen again but when i first heard DANCE LIKE WR MAKIN LOVE and I BET i was liiiike ... i KEPT ON LOOKIN.

ok first of all i didn't fully realize until now that the whole album dropped. when exactly did that happen? umm...

also i'm listening to it and so far nothing is calling out to me except the v beginning of Jackie. like 20 seconds beginning.

but i feel like have to get into it bc i'm seeing her TOMORROW. like i want to be able to enjoy what i'm hearing. it's like i have to crash for a final.

Good songs: "Dance Like We're Making Love," "Lullaby," "Kiss and Tell" (my favorite electric piano melody in a while -- as haunting as LL's "Doin' It")," "Give Me Love."

"Kiss and Tell" = 10/10 fantastic song, total classic, will be caning this one all year long

rest of the album = at this stage seems kinda like 4/10 but will give it another shot or two

i'm reading the "kiss & tell" praise upthread and part of me assumes you guys just mean "stuck on you"? "kiss & tell" seems of a piece with the colourless, characterless rest to me

okay so Ciara was great. she can really sing, it was touching. she sang I Got You at the end and really got into it. she danced. she played I Run It, which, don't get me started, and Ride, and Goodies, and 1-2 Step, and Promise, and Jackie and 4 songs or so from the new album that sounded great live. one of the best nights i've had in a long long time!

"kiss & tell" is incredible, seems like ciara's entry into the "love me harder"/"style" canon

definitely is "Kiss and Tell" and "Only You" that are my highlights so far

Yep. It's one of the album's few successful attempts to Ciara-fy pop sounds of the day ("Dance..." is the other).

My buddy in the office told me that BMF also stands for black mafia family, which has ties to GA. just found that interesting after I read Alfred's comment about how CiCi doesn't need to insist that she's a bad motherfucker.

and given that the song is about her mom and she says "if you been through what i been through, then you'd be poppin this shit too" is just kind of ... woah. sorry just trying to wrap my mind around this concept.

i dig this album a lot more than her last couple. she was overdue to work with folks like Dr. Luke, of all the R&B stars who leaned towards dance pop and took flack for it, she's actually better suited to it than some of the harder-edged R&B she had been focusing on.

Totally agree re the Dr. Luke productions. They sound tailored to her rather than she forced to fit to a one-size-fits pattern.

Have no problem calling this her best since 2006 but it's still not great.

yea definitely this album is growing on me, the fun filled dance vibes, especially seeing it live. and completely agree with Brad's comments above.

still can't rate it above the self titled tho, those deep cuts kill me.

i liked a couple songs on it a lot but it was mostly Terius being terrible

'you can get it' and 'i run it' are two of my fav ciara songs and two of my fav terius songs so those alone put it way up there for me

yea, me too, along with Ride. (Ride was on it right?) but agreed that the rest of the album is INCREDIBLY spotty. still, having those high highlights goes a long way so it's a tough call. when she played I Run It at the show i literally lost it. it has literally influenced half of my musical endeavors.

i've always loved ciara's harder edge, but if the dance-pop here was on the level of "living it up" i wouldn't be complaining. i find it quite hard to separate the actual ciara albums we got from the vast swirls of leaked/unofficial tracks that accompanied each of them - it's probably why i hold fantasy ride and basic instinct in such high esteem, it's probably why i stan for her at all tbh. going on finished product alone

New album far superior to Basic Instinct IMO. It's no Fantasy Ride, but who knew straight up pop (I nearly said teen pop) would suite Ciara so well? And "I Bet" is a single of the year candidate for me.

glad people are liking it so well!! i didn't rly know what ILX thought about Ciara Ciara - but i just love it. she's come out saying it's one of her most important/cohesive albums, and i p much agree.

Basic Instinct is the only one of her albums I care about as a discrete work

This album isn't as bad as I was expecting from the reviews but it's a real slog to get through a good chunk of the middle.

i feel like it gets good in the middle! i've been getting different views on which songs are ppl's favorites which i think ppl agree is a good sign? also i spotted some pretty rave reviews of the album esp. in conjunction with the tour that were posted in the past few days (the Times, Billboard, VIBE etc). they didn't get it *all* right (i still think she has one of the most expressive voices in the business), but they did her well.

the delivery on each track is impeccable. she believes it. that saves the album.

the good cuts off this record are top quality (i would say there are about 8.) also that's how i'm feelin' is fun. this is a deceptive album.

disagree. it's by the books, but it's not bland. it's true to herself. at first i had the same reaction, but if you listen to her vocals on the chorus, you hear the entirely un-bland commitment.

I don't even see how it's by the books. It sounds like a 2015 pop take on Genesis' "Tonight Tonight Tonight" which is a big part of why I love it.

you just meant "in the air tonight" i guess, the keyboard line is basically ITAT with a few extra bars

i don't really follow ciara and only dip my toe in this kind of music occasionally, but i really quite like this album. so i guess it's typical that the heads in this thread were disappointed.

lot of the songs on this record reveal themselves over time. my girlfriend plays "that's how i'm feelin'" all the time and i love that song now

Heard The Breakfast Club shame Ciara today for how she's raising her kid (she let him wear Russell Wilson's jersey!). The segment just went on and on and on; I feel awful for her

the breakfast club is p dumb so i would take it with a grain of salt. also I Got You is the only mommy song i can stomach and she clearly gives a big fuck about her son so that's just bad "journalism"

also i think she's pretty over feeling awful for not getting all of the media feedback that she deserves, which is good for her.

re "Kiss & Tell": it's nice to hear a song from a woman's pov about her man working it for her, especially set to a "Doin' It"-style electric piano.

i still can't even talk about that song i want it to be on the radio over and over. there's something about the bass
