Ineffable, spacey Japanese art-rock, or turgid mediaeval spare parts salesmen? Widen to include the whole PSF label if you wish...

Pete, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

never heard any but a ghostbloke is playin' tha TOON with damon and naomi on saturday - any good ?

geordie racer, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw 'em last night at the Garage - pretty good, but not really because of Kurihara's guitar playing, more cos of their inherently talented selves. Ghost are on a very tight leash on the Damon and Naomi record, too - they don't really add anything much compared to the transformation that could have taken place - a bit dissapointing.

Pete, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ghost suck when they're spacey Japanese art-rock, they're great when they're turgid mediaeval spare parts salesmen. If you're so sick you wanna drink tea, I could see listening to Ghost. All their albums are really good, but I would have to sober up before I could recommend one above the others.

Other PSF highlights: Fushitsusha and Haino, obviously, and the related Lost Aaraaf ... aw, fuck it, my rack of Japanese improv is upstairs. Nearly everything on PSF is good, so long as it's not solo sax.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Were/are Ghost even on PSF?

I love them. Classic. Search - first album, Lama Rabi Rabi. Destroy...well, my least favourite is Second Time Around but I think that may well be because I don't "get it".

Oh no actually, Damon & Naomi w/ Ghost is eminently destroyable because it is in essence a bloody D & N album and I was suckered into listening to it.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DN with Ghost is searchable because DN are always great. Ghost mixes up things mildly, but well nonetheless. The long tracks have an epic feel that DN used to steer clear of (although their later albums have been getting more extended).

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Seriously, Sterling - what do you get out of Damon & Naomi? Because it was the, absolutely, most boring music I've listened to in a very long time - more so even than Tortoise or somebody. Just completely inert, for me. Not actively bad, just...utterly blank of any kind of interest or engagement. So what's the secret? :)

Tom, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I saw D&N at the Knitting Factory with Ghost supporting and then guesting as backup musicians. It was deadly. That's deadly in a bad way.

Nick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom, first three Ghost albs were originally on PSF then reissued on Drag City. Surprised you didn't mention that terrific Masaki Batoh 'collected works' comp you used to have, prob. my fave Ghost-related prod. As for other PSF stuff, recently I've been digging some of the brain-scraping Masayuki Takayanagi reissues - free improv electric/acoustic guitar, influenced by Bailey and a big influence on Haino. And I'll put in a good word for some of the Kaoru Abe solo sax stuff, even if Otis won't.

Andrew L, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Naomi's voice is magnificent -- with the right production sheen, as on Playback singers, the interplay of voice and guitar, both shining, feels like an extended alcohol buzz, not the hit right after the shot, but when it really starts to move through your veins. Not music to listen to with any sort of critical approch, more music to lounge around and avoid work to. All in the texture and sweep of melodic progression. It doesn't surprise me that this is very un-tom music.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm as shocked as you are that I forgot the Batoh comp, Andrew. Especially given that I was listening to it a couple of weeks ago. Yeah, definitely very very searchable indeed, especially if you've ever had any curiosity about what Batoh might do with a broader range of instruments.

Tom, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

can someone do the same description thing Sterling just did for Ghost?

I love Ghost too, btw. I don't think D&N are boring, but I think their last record is a bit pointless and well, no more than nice- ish.

To go abruptly off topic - Tortoise = blankness? Just wanted to say the first track on TNT is as exhilirating as anything I've ever heard. Of course I've lived most of my life in a disused abbatoir in a Venezuelan border town.

Pete, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The only Ghost I've heard is on the Damon & Naomi album, but as Tom (I think) suggested, that album is 95% D&N, so I doubt it's a fair representation of Ghost. Still, they intrigue me. Is it true that the band live in adandonned temples and train stations? Or is that just a bit of enigmatic self-mythologizing?

alex in nyc, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I love Ghost, and I even like DN w/Ghost in small doses. However, I saw DN w/Ghost at Terrastock a few years back and Damon pissed me off to no end by going off into this diatribe about how their music was more pure and real than the music that djs make. Ahem.

Is it just one of those things where men named Damon are annoying by default?

Nicole, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno - Damon out of Brookside was quite nice. Whatever happened to his TV presenting career?

I think names with annoying associations must work in a vicious circle. I mean only a complete arsehole would call their baby 'Damon' if they lived in Britain today. So all the new Damons will be brought up by arseholes and will become arseholes themselves most probably. And then er... the circle stops becuase they aren't going to call their own arsehole progeny Damon as well unless they are serious cockfarmers. Sorry.

Nick, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oddly enough, I was at that same Terrastock show and I don't remember that rant at all! I must have happily blotted it from my mind (or else I was just watching Tom Rapp warm up in the side room). Suffice to say that while Dean Wareham has been justly slammed for his increasing rock star behavior towards the end of Galaxie 500, I don't think any of the three are the type I'd necessarily want to hang around with!

When I saw D/N and Ghost last year at another Terrastock, Ghost definitely added some loveliness to the proceedings. Then Ghost on its own blew down the venue walls with a 13-minute 'fuck you' because everyone had to leave by a certain time. Ergo, Ghost wins. ;-)

On record, meanwhile -- again, Ghost over D/N. Who are pleasant enough, have their moments I guess, etc. But that's about it. Midrange craft with whispery breathing mistaken as depths. Hm.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I too was suckered into buying the DN+G album because Ghost was on it - I wanted a Ghost album and could never find any around. And anyway Chris Barrus said it was really good. The production is pristine, fanstastic. The music makes me want to beat people up, particularly Damon.

Josh, Wednesday, 16 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
*revive*

crikey! pete asking a question abt ghost! Tom listening to the 'batoh comp'! those were 'the days'.

I got 'temple stone' through a CDR deal. If you dig psych folk from the likes of the incredible string band and like yr krautrock this could be up yr street but there is something unsatisfying abt it. its alright but I actually prefer che-shizu and taj mahal travellers is far better than either, i guess.

''Other PSF highlights: Fushitsusha and Haino, obviously, and the related Lost Aaraaf ... aw, fuck it, my rack of Japanese improv is upstairs. Nearly everything on PSF is good, so long as it's not solo sax.''

wah!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 29 June 2003 08:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I like Ghost. Midieval Japanese hippies tripping on 'shrooms is just my sort of thing though.

PSF in general is great, though I haven't particularly cared for the much-lauded Kan Mikami from the little I have heard. Perhaps in a diffrent mood I would. Search Exias-J.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Sunday, 29 June 2003 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

chance to check out a full Ghost live radio session:

http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/5470

I agree, Kurihara is a real powerhouse in the band, but I think the entire sum of the parts is equally amazing... just terrific live.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Sunday, 29 June 2003 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Saw them open for Damon & Naomi in Hoboken about 5 years ago. They (Ghost) were amazing. Never heard any of their recordings, though.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 30 June 2003 21:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno, I thought Whoopi Goldberg was pretty overrated.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 30 June 2003 21:43 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
I saw their 1st album in the sale in HMV in Oxford Street about a month ago - reduced from £18.99 to £1.99. However, given that I am forever picking up highly rated Japanese bands in sales and forever finding them to be utter shite, I didn't buy it. On returning to the shop at the weekend I was surprised to see it still there, so, against my better judgement, I bought - and I like it! The word I would use to describe is nice.

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

ha! you like something I'm not as keen on. that fits somehow.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't it just?

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Ghost were one of the top bands at Terrastock in Boston. But even they couldn't save Damon and Naomi from that painful set.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

See, Mr. Noodles, this is why we LEFT. Avoiding Tom Rapp and D/N in favor of a fine Italian meal with Mr. Barrus, Gareth and Matos = a vast improvement. But yes, the actual Ghost set itself = tres genius.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

nine months pass...
What do we think of Snuffbox Immanence? I saw it pretty cheap at the record store the other day, and I quite like Hypnotic Underworld, but Tune In, Turn On, Free Tibet a bit less, probably because of the 34 minute closer, which has nice bits that could have been built into awesome tunes but instead just kind of meander aimlessly.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:26 (twenty-one years ago)

A super nice album.

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I know what Ned thinks, but what about the rest of you?

S: Lhasa Lhasa from Tune In, Turn On..., Piper and Holy High from Hypnotic Underworld

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

"Regenesis" on Snuffbox has to be one of the most beautiful songs of the last five years, no?

Tim Ellison, Tuesday, 25 May 2004 23:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If I'm remembering it right, Snuffbox is lovely. It's got quite a light and airy feel to it, kind of like some delicately stoned medieval chamber prog, but the tunes are maybe a little more tightly focussed than similar stuff off previous albums. Lots of the songs are based round acoustic guitars, flutes and indeed glockenspiels, though Kurihara does pop up quite a bit to add his considerable electric clout.

It's also got a great cover of the Stones' "Live With Me" on it, which for me is highly noteworthy for being one of the few songs my wife will actively insist that I play her.

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 26 May 2004 08:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i stood outside a show of theirs in philadelphia once, waiting for someone. and then, in boston, some people went to the show, and i didnt. i didnt really know about them. i still dont, but, if i buy lama rabi rabi, or another one, this weekend, then hopefully i will.

so, which one should i buy?

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 28 May 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

you should get hypnotic underworld, i think.

lama rabi rabi is patchy patchy patchy. snuffbox immanence is good though. DON'T buy Ghost with Damon & Naomi.

Dave Amos, Friday, 28 May 2004 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Just saw them tonight. GREAT live.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Monday, 27 September 2004 05:46 (twenty years ago)

"We are Ghost from the Far East."

Leeeter van den Hoogenband (Leee), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:03 (twenty years ago)

"We are Ghost from the Far East."

ditto. they were awesome. they exited the khyber (philly) through the door behind the stage. it was the first time i saw a band do that so they could re-enter for an encore. it's a shame more people didn't come out for the show.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:29 (twenty years ago)

They are always great in Philly! Well, okay, I've only seen them twice in philly, but they were great then. The show upstairs at the troc back around the time of snuffbox is still on my top ten live shows ever list!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 15:36 (twenty years ago)

Haven't heard their previous, but HYPNOTIC UNDERWORLD is very good. Still have to fast fwd past first track, but the rest just grows on me me more and more. Any compentent muso can be eclectic, but all these different bits are so well-timed! Like the best style-sequences of Comets On Fire's BLUE CATHEDRAL Umphrey McGee's ANCHOR DROPS, but not, in effect, but not literally: Ghost's influences are different. "Hazy Paradise"(a Dutch song, from early 70s, I think) is kind of Jimmy Webb/Bryan Maclean, but not as icky as they could be; piano sections remind of Pharoah Sanders's LIVE AT THE EAST, other pasts like if Donovan had continued developing his work with Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page; Japanese refs. like Benzaiten and Stomu Yomashita's Red Buddah Theater. But none of this is lifted (I doubt that that the orig."Hazy Paradise" has a Japanese accent, which tends to resist the more emotive faux-Scott-Walker phrasing which I suspect this song might bring out in Westerners).

Don A, Monday, 27 September 2004 20:54 (twenty years ago)

you forgot amon duul 2, don. i always hear them in ghost. especially on the new one.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago)

The members of Ghost all have really nice hair!

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 27 September 2004 20:58 (twenty years ago)

Seein them Saturday with Six Organs of Admittance. really lookin forward to it.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 27 September 2004 21:00 (twenty years ago)

I dunno, I thought Whoopi Goldberg was pretty overrated.

Would you believe I clicked on this thread just now, not realizing I'd already posted on it, to make another Whoopi Goldberg joke?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:02 (twenty years ago)

Also, their own hazy paradise (lowercase habitat as well as that song) is also steamy, dirty, like a real forest (incl, in the back corner of the pasture, down toward the bottom of the ravine, speaking of shrooms.) Was very glad to first hear this as antidote to cable debut of LORD OF THE RINGS: digitalized, sanitary fronds, incl. Ian McKellan's "hair" eeewwww

Don, Monday, 27 September 2004 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Anyone heard the Holy High 7"? I *think* it came out quite a long time before _Hypnotic Underworld_ so I was wondering whether it might be totally different.

Also: jealous beyond words of all you lot for seeing them. Dont think theyve ever played in Britain.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:43 (twenty years ago)

i thought new zealand looked really pretty in lord of the rings! i've only seen the first one though.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

(X-post) Yeah, it's a totally different version. Must have been around '95 or so. It's very good.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:44 (twenty years ago)

did i see somewhere that someone has reissued the batoh now sound records? (i have them and like them a lot. good if you like the folky side of ghost.) or maybe those were other records that have been reissued.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:45 (twenty years ago)

Batoh's solo stuff is great. As is Cosmic Invention. And Sweet Honey.

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 27 September 2004 21:46 (twenty years ago)

I said this on another thread i think, but people who go and see ghost when they are in full-on rock mode -as opposed to temple bell insense mode- are almost always impressed. Live they are such an amazing tight rock & roll beast. god, i could watch them play forever.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:48 (twenty years ago)

The Batoh stuff is out again on Drag City. Its those two 90s albums reissued.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:50 (twenty years ago)

that's cool. more people should hear those.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:52 (twenty years ago)

Absolutely, and a timely reissue too. Fits nicely alongside some of the folksy stuff that DC have been punting out of late. Except better obv.

NickB (NickB), Monday, 27 September 2004 21:55 (twenty years ago)

If had to choose between their (or most people's) heavy vs. folky, would def. choose the heavy. What's their heaviest?? I want that before Batoh, whatever it is.

Don, Monday, 27 September 2004 22:30 (twenty years ago)

get lama rabi rabi, don. if you like the new one, you will like that one too.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:32 (twenty years ago)

Somehow had the idea that TURN ON TUNE IN FREE TIBET was mostly pretty good heavy? Judging by descriptions somewhere.

Don, Monday, 27 September 2004 22:57 (twenty years ago)

lotsa long jams. get that one too.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 22:59 (twenty years ago)

turn on tune in... is mostly not heavy at all. there's one long 30 minute track at the end, and even that's not terribly heavy...

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago)

I like Snuffbox a whole lot more than turn on, but maybe just cuz i listen to it a lot more. they came out at exactly the same time didn't they? I think don is just looking for acid mother temple records!

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:27 (twenty years ago)

les rallizes denudes! false grail???

Ian c=====8 (orion), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:37 (twenty years ago)

wuzza? ian, have you ever heard marble sheep? you would love that shit.

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 27 September 2004 23:54 (twenty years ago)

hey, forced exposure sells that live 77 rallizes thing for 25 bucks. should i get it? is it cheaper somewhere? i kinda want it.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:05 (twenty years ago)

It is good to see all this Ghost talk (and yes there's the review linked above by Ian...but there are others). Seen them three times live now, each spectacular in different ways.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:10 (twenty years ago)

i wrote about the new album for the voice, but i don't think it really made much sense. fun to write though!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:13 (twenty years ago)

Live 77 is my fave LRD probably. I tried to start a LRD thread on teh noize board but it didn't get very far.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:17 (twenty years ago)

Believe the hype on les Rallizes Denudes.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 00:56 (twenty years ago)

belive the hype on ghost too, really! such a rad band.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:08 (twenty years ago)

i have it on good authority that they're touring the States again next spring. i've already begun hoarding provisions to follow them up/down the East Coast.

blackmail.is.my.life (blackmail.is.my.life), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:15 (twenty years ago)

Pazz and Jop voters: Don't let Hypnotic Underworld slip in your memory because it came out near the beginning of the year.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 28 September 2004 01:53 (twenty years ago)

Oh no no, it's been on my list ever since came out, but but:HAUNTED WEATHER,Arthur Russell's one-two punch (should I leave out one, just to make room for somebody else?!); Crime, Texas Terri, Cyndi Boste, Marron,DNA,Drive-By Truckers,Faust vs. Dalek, Comets On Fire, live Ubu,Homosexuals,Metal Boys--well, I think I've suppressed these last three, but I haven't yet heard/wrassled with the Ayler box, Eminem, new SMILE, David Thomas and 2 Pale Boys, aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Don, Tuesday, 28 September 2004 02:35 (twenty years ago)

saw them Saturday - they're on fire on this tour. really really great - if you even remotely like their stuff you've gotta see them this time around. Heavy heavy 70s psych/acid-rock, with much more together tunes and riffs than AMT (I love AMT too, but they operate on a different plane)

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 4 October 2004 16:07 (twenty years ago)

And a revive...because we need a definitive answer here -- is the Terrastock show in fact going to be their last one ever?

I've been warming up by listening to the albums one a day here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:35 (nineteen years ago)

I really don't understand the love for these guys. All I've heard is Hypnotic Underworld, and I'm somewhat disappointed. It's not the transcendent psych experience I wanted. It's more of a long, noodling, samey-sounding unoffending, gentle, mildly-psychedelic rock; the Japanese Pink Floyd.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:43 (nineteen years ago)

Hearing the earlier albums may change your mind somewhat. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:44 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe I need to. Ghost is another band I discovered through ILM. I can't remember where exactly the love was, but I think in one of the rolling pysch threads? There was a lot of love for Hypnotic Underground, and I really don't see it. It's soft, but not in a caressing, warm way. Just soft in an easy listening, adult contemporary, Wilco, unoffending way. It sounds like it's entirely lacking passion.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:47 (nineteen years ago)

????

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:48 (nineteen years ago)

Give it a couple more listens in the right sort of circumstances Mickey.

Still haven't got round to getting the DVD. Anyone else have it? (and did I ask that already??)

is the Terrastock show in fact going to be their last one ever?

It better bloody well not be!

NickB (NickB), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 13:59 (nineteen years ago)

this is not the steely dan thread. this is the ghost thread.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:00 (nineteen years ago)

i have the dvd. i watched it once. the cd it comes with is pretty cool.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:01 (nineteen years ago)

That DVD/CD set is the one thing I'm missing. Soon, soon...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:02 (nineteen years ago)

NickB, maybe. Everything on it seems turned down a notch. The freak outs just don't freak out like a good Can freakout, the jams don't really jam enough, they just sort of noodle, and the parts that should rock just don't bring the ROCK.

Mickey (modestmickey), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

where did it say terrastock would be their last show ever? I thought it was just the band's "only US appearance this year." that would suck if they were calling it quits--especially since I've never seen 'em live yet. I for one thought Hypnotic Underworld was great. And the DVD is worth seeing, though some of it is a bit "fans only," like the video footage that's so dark you can barely see a thing. The accompanying CD has some excellent bits as well, though i haven't given it too much listening time...

Windy and Carl sent out their weekly update today with a note about T6 at the bottom from Jeffrey o' SecretEye, who's organizing, and in it it's clearly stated that Ghost's show is a 'farewell performance.' :-/

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:56 (nineteen years ago)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 April 2006 23:58 (nineteen years ago)

I've been on the verge of buying "Hypnotic Underworld" (for 5 quid) for ages but I bought the "Free Tibet" album and didn't like it so I won't bother now

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

I liked Snuffbox Imminence better than Hypnotic Underworld. I haven't heard their really old stuff. I don't understand why Ghost is mentioned in the same conversations as Boredoms or AMT.

lama rabi rabi and hypnotic underworld are the two strongest albums. and they are the most amonduul2-ish albums as well.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:22 (nineteen years ago)

What Amon Duul 2 era?

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:24 (nineteen years ago)

Wolf City?

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:32 (nineteen years ago)

I like Snuffbox, Lama Rabirabi, and Hypnotic Underworld the best, in that order. Second Time Around and the s/t both have some good jams, too. None of the live stuff has thrilled me completely (Temple Stone or the DVD) but they were a highlight of Terrastock 5, although that doesn't really translate on the DVD. My favorite parts of the set were left out, like the incredible "Forthcoming from the Inside."

Tripmaker (SDWitzm), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:37 (nineteen years ago)

My favourite era! Well, one of! (xpost)

D.D. Disappointed Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:38 (nineteen years ago)

post-yeti? yeah, okay, wolf city-era.

none of the stuff on the dvd compares to the show i saw in philly after snuffbox came out. they were FULL ON ROCK that nite, and completely on fire. one of the greatest shows i've ever seen.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:42 (nineteen years ago)

The Terrastock 4 show -- indescribable. They had only about ten minutes and they made the most of it beyond description.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

sadly, the only ghost album i would destroy would be the damon & naomi one. and i like damon & naomi fine. okay, maybe that was more of a damon and naomi album. soooo boring. (i keep forgetting how old this thread is. i'm probably repeating myself a hundred times.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 13 April 2006 16:49 (nineteen years ago)

they were fucking fantastic in NYC last year or the year before, whenever that was.

the unbearable lightness of peeing (orion), Thursday, 13 April 2006 17:07 (nineteen years ago)

the reason to buy hypnotic underworld, if anyone needs one, is right here in this snippet from my review:

"Anyway, if Ghost's new Hypnotic Underworld is an ever expanding lotus blossom that grafts past prog desires and the will to propagate on its petals whilst consciously demanding collective pre-history antidotes and anecdotes in exchange for post-war/post-'68 letdowns and lessons learned that have forever addled the brains of impressionable seekers, then so be it. I'm in. History is written by the victors, but the beauty of desolation and dreams of rural idylls far from the bomb blasts are written by those who died for farce."

Classic!

I really liked the dark temple footage in the DVD... and the accompanying CD is their most out-there improv stuff.

This "last US show" thing makes me very sad, I was lucky enough to see them on their 1998 tour and they played this long crazy noisy thing with hurdygurdy that sounded like something off of Batoh's second solo EP...

Drag City's news section says this: Neil Hamburger, High Llamas, Ghost and King Kong (plus...shhh! Joanna Newsom. There — we said it) are all busily toiling away, soon to surface with records we’ll pitch to you in the future. Will it be 2006 or 2007? Who knows! The path to post-production is a long and tangled one and although we are the gambling sort, we’ve long since given up trying to guess when the art’s ready to come out of the oven.

is there a new album coming out? or are they just touring for the heck of it.

tylerw, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:12 (sixteen years ago)

Nothing immediately listed on their website about a new album, so looks like the latter option:

http://www.ab.cyberhome.ne.jp/~pochamal/

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Just got the first (self-titled) album on PSF secondhand the other day and am listening to it right now, coincidently enough. Sounds good.

krakow, Saturday, 4 April 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

OK, second time round for this self-titled album and it rules. Much better than I was expecting (I love 'Hypnotic Underworld' but was afraid that much of their other stuff would be too hippyish for my tastes).

krakow, Saturday, 4 April 2009 21:48 (sixteen years ago)

Nope, it's all pretty great!

ilxor, Sunday, 5 April 2009 01:18 (sixteen years ago)

Aye, I reckon I'll be tracking down the rest now...

I know Monorail has had a s/h copy of Batoh's Darg City solo compilation for a while, so if that's still there on Monday, it's mine.

best accomplishment of the obama administration so far!!! : )

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Sunday, 5 April 2009 09:19 (sixteen years ago)

After repeatedly reading lots of praise for these guys (and given the fact that, on paper, they're right up my alley) I succumbed and bought In Stormy Nights on vinyl last year. But it failed to move me. Maybe I should give it another chance, but I'm barely motivated right now to walk across the room and put it on.

Is this album generally considered to be poor? Should I perhaps give them another go, with a different LP?

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:22 (sixteen years ago)

Right, In Stormy Nights is on the deck. "Hemicyclic Anthelion" covers all of side one, which is always a good sign....

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:26 (sixteen years ago)

that's the most difficult place to start I could imagine! good luck. I found the later part of the record to be stronger.

sleeve, Sunday, 5 April 2009 10:33 (sixteen years ago)

Actually, "Hemicyclic Anthelion" is one of the songs I always liked on this album. I love that sort of free-form piece. It was some of the later, folkier songs that I found a little off-putting. But listening now, I'm actually quite liking them too, for example "Motherly Bluster" (on side 3 of the LP)

Duke, Sunday, 5 April 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

best accomplishment of the obama administration so far!!! : )

Sadly, yes.

I love my Leningrad Blues Machine, A.N.P., Fushitsusha, Boredoms, White Heaven, and Hanadensha LPs, thank you very much. ... but i have no idea how this mid-tier band "Boris" got levitated to such god-like status in recent years, I mean they are good but by no means worthy of the hype

Stormy Davis, Sunday, 15 August 2010 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

and you are right, I did miss the part where adamrl asked you about FTB, so I apologize about that (altho i still think that is weird.. the two bands sound totally different...)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 16 August 2010 01:01 (fourteen years ago)

Boris are seriously one of the lamest bands ever. They put their finger to the wind, thought that being Japanese and doing sludge a-la Melvins would be the way to go. dude I bought the fucking Melvins 'Bullhead' LP on Boner when the fucker first came out. so "Boris" decided to tie their wagon to the Japanese hard rock tradition. well, they don't match up. it actually depresses me that folks like Akita work with them. And people like 'call all destroyer' get all defensive about their beloved Boris. Fuck Boris, they fucking suck compared to the great Japanese rock bands

Stormy Davis, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

I just don't get why it is necessary to compare bands on account of their nationality. This is like the new Anglophilia.

P oco, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:11 (fourteen years ago)

ppl like 'stormy davis' pulling nonsensical i-was-there old dude bullshit. and i never said i 'loved' boris or anything close. but i'm done here.

call all destroyer, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, cuz the melvins were so fucking hip in 96. (i was into the melvins then, there was noone less hip then that melvins.)

you must hate Keiji Haino with Boris - Black: Implication Flooding then.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Monday, 16 August 2010 01:12 (fourteen years ago)

hahaha "he was there" when it comes to japanese rock music because he bought a melvins lp one time

zorn_bond.mp3, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:13 (fourteen years ago)

nah, whatever, I've loved all these bands, and followed their careers!! cool if you think I am wrong, that's the point of a message board. fact of the matter, tho -- yeah, Boris SUCK compared to like everybody

ha, that elton song is pretty rad. he is like on of last classic rock ppl that I *haven't* gone ahead and and bought everything by.

Still, I *know* I need 'Tumbleweed Connection'...

Stormy Davis, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:25 (fourteen years ago)

*Tumbleweed Connection* is fire from start to finish ... need a UNI original w/ the booklet tho....

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 16 August 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

as far as 'unlikely places for a clusterfuck' goes, this is pretty good.

I like most of the bands in question! Ghost were decent enough but kinda boring live though, besides the guitar heroics of Kurihara.

Antoine Bugleboy (Merdeyeux), Monday, 16 August 2010 01:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, 'Madman' is a cool LP too, has that guy B.J. Cole on slide guitar

original bgm, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:45 (fourteen years ago)

I think this is otm:

boris are hit or miss but when they hit they hit hard

thing is, they're so hit or miss that I've stopped paying attention unless kurihara is in the mix.

original bgm, Monday, 16 August 2010 01:46 (fourteen years ago)

Ghost: love 'em, enjoy a good number of the albums. Saw them live a year or two ago in front of maybe 100 people and they killed it. Great psychedelic set that meandered and then refocused. My girlfriend loved them too.

Boris: awesome band, great live show. The albums can be hit-or-miss, but they have at least 9-10 albums that HIT and hit hard.

Melvins: legendary, and incredible. Can't beat their live show either. I've seen them blow numerous headliners off the stage as they knocked out the opening slot.

Fushitsusha: still exploring their catalog (CDs are hard to find/expensive!) but I've liked what I've heard, though not quite as much as...

Keiji Haino: ...whose solo efforts are generally quite awesome, and preferable to Fushitsusha.

Elton John: zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...

Pretty crazy how Boris changed from "good" to "one of the lamest bands ever" in the space of two hours last night - they must be feeling pretty devastated right now :(

Only just seen that Batoh is doing a few solo dates in Europe this month:

6/14/12 Barcelona
6/15/12 Hasselt
6/17/12 Geneva
6/18/12 Brighton
6/19/12 London

Pretty excited about seeing him, never managed to catch him or Ghost before (could be wrong but I think that Ghost only ever played at most just a couple of shows in the UK)

well yes, that is stupid.

i saw them at atp around then too, besides that i don't recall them visiting here since i've known them. i think kurihara did a tour with damon & naomi? but yes. rare visitors. i don't know about on the rest of the dates, but the london one will see batoh do 'brain pulse music', which presumably means a performance on his new brain wave-controlled instrument: http://www.dragcity.com/products/brain-pulse-music-machine

Merdeyeux, Wednesday, 6 June 2012 11:56 (thirteen years ago)

Sadly the Batoh gig last night fell a bit flat. Very low attendance (about 15 people including the support acts) and quite a short set (felt like it was only about 20 mins long!) and Batoh seemed to be having a few technical issues with the circuits that his brain pulse machine was plugged into. That said, I was quite surprised by the music the device generated. Hadn't heard the record and was expecting soothing drones or something (I read somewhere that it was being looked at for use in medical treatment), but what we actually got was like a flip-flop sequence of quiet momemnts punctuated by loud shrieks and blocks of quite agressive tones that sounded a lot like early electronic music. Not a big surprise I guess considering that the brain pulse machine was being fed into a couple of oscillators and some sort of feedback loop. Good while it lasted, but I left feeling a litle glum :(

Reading a few tweets and it looks like he also only played for twenty minutes or so in London last night. What's up with that? Should have brought a guitar on tour with him as well.

Awesome. I remember being close enough to the front and center (maybe second or third row?) to be slightly worried about Batoh's marvelous "springer" device -- I think he let the spring go at some point? Anyway, amazing stuff and I can't wait for the album to arrive!
