I Heard You Polling - The Yo La Tengo Poll Results Thread. (ILM Poll #61)

So I received 33 ballots in total, 27 for albums. It was as massive as hearing Spec Bebop for the first time (do you remember?). As I said earlier, I'll start this afternoon with albums and covers. Then we will roll the (45) songs over the course of the week, ending Thursday. Clemenza prepared something awesome for the songs. A huge thank you for Clemenza and Bee OK for providing patience and support for the poll. I feel like I'm part of the ilx family now.

I do not use Spotify so if somebody could volunteer for it later that would be awesome.

I have to confess, for the first 2 years of listening to Yo La Tengo (right when Summer Sun was released) I was certain Ira was James and James was Ira. I didn't check for very long.

My first YLT was I Can Hear The Heart. Went back and forth between Painful and And Then Nothing...
really when I went back Popular Songs seems the only out and out bust, and even then I think Avalon made my top 10 tracks.

campreverb, Monday, 1 June 2015 23:50 (ten years ago)

I Can Hear the Heart my first as well. Then Summer Sun. Both made my ballot.

Really glad The Sounds of Sounds of Science made it. One of the underrated YLT records, gorgeous gorgeous jams.

"Griselda" - Pete Stampfel

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 02:01 (ten years ago)

Didn't vote, but wow. I can't believe the "Speeding Motorcycle" cover couldn't crack the top 10.

Also, their cover of Blondie's "Dreaming" is superb.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 02:09 (ten years ago)

They have so many great covers. I am surprising either Needle of Death and Be Thankful For What You've Got.

Van Horn Street, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 02:13 (ten years ago)

Dump's "Raspberry Beret" is excellent--almost put that on my regular ballot.

clemenza, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 02:20 (ten years ago)

I didn't vote for it, but still surprised that May I Sing With Me placed lower than President YLT (though I guess there wasn't a tremendous point difference between the bottom 5 anyway). I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed Electr-o-pura while compiling my ballot. I always think of it as a lesser album, but then wanted to put a load of tracks from it on my ballot. I can't help but feel that ICHTHBAO is a little overrated, while ATNTIIO is comparatively underrated.

All of my picks ended up in the covers results so YAY!

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 02:21 (ten years ago)

ALBUMS/EPs
1. President Yo La Tengo
2. Little Honda
3. Electr-o-pura
4. Summer Sun
5. Fakebook

COVERS
1. Be Thankful for What You Got
2. Take Care
3. Blitzkrieg Bop
4. Somebody’s Baby
5. Cast a Shadow

I find that "President Yo La Tengo" is their most solid album and seriously underrated. Almost every song on it is phantastic. There are other albums like "Electr-o-pura" which have higher highs but at the same time they also feature a couple of weaker songs. I seriously don't understand why "Be Thankful for What You Got" didn't place in the covers poll. By far their best cover, imo. And the EP "Little Honda" it is on is such a fun cover feast.

Funny timing on this: http://store.matadorrecords.com/stuff-like-that-there

dronestreet, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 13:57 (ten years ago)

Don't get me wrong, I voted it as my #4, but Painful suffers from the curse of the sound of those late 80s/early 90s BOSS digital guitar pedals. That record would have been so much better if they had played with vintage gear.

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Tuesday, 2 June 2015 15:44 (ten years ago)

think i know what you mean, but man, i love the guitars on painful.

tylerw, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

pretty psyched for this Fakebook sequel -- sample tracks sound amazing. schramm really is a wonderful guitarist.

tylerw, Tuesday, 2 June 2015 15:48 (ten years ago)

I do too. I'm not hearing those pedals, or at least, nothing that sounds out-of-line with Kaplan's usual sound.

In fact, I'm not even sure which pedals those are, and the only digital stuff I saw them use in '94 were the DigiTech PDS delays (to astounding effect, I should add).

xp

For what it's worth, the songs are not connected to the players, unless I hit upon something accidentally. They were matched according to length of song/album title and how much available space there was--Yo La Tengo sometimes have very long album titles. Every card is from the '70s.

tears are in your eyes is a lovely song. i always think of atntiio as an album about depression, particularly struggling with it with someone else that you love, and tears are in your eyes kind of marks the lowest point of the sadness and the beginnings of recovery.

"Upside-Down" is one of the most perfect 3-minute rock songs ever, imo. No fadeout, they really stick the landing.

"False Alarm" too low.

During my one listen to Summer Sun, a non-YLT-fan friend of mine asked why I was so disappointed by it. I immediately put on "False Alarm" saying, "Because they used to be this good!" He understood immediately.

No Blue Jays. After the initial excitement of getting the franchise and maybe the first few weeks, I barely paid attention to the Blue Jays in the '70s. They were pretty terrible. I was much more caught up in all the drama of the Yankees at the time.

mookieproof, Thursday, 4 June 2015 02:10 (ten years ago)

"Moby Octopad" was my #1. A friend taped I Can Hear the Heart for me, I played it in the car on a lengthy drive to a cottage, and I kept playing "Moby Octopad" over and over. It was so strange and so melodic, and it didn't seem at all like what they were doing on New Wave Hot Dogs, the last I'd heard of them at the time. (I probably wasn't remembering very well--I imagine there's some continuity there.) I think I picked out the Who sample right away.

Nice to see Little Eyes finish so high. This must be their highest-placing song post-And Then Nothing....

Van Horn Street, Friday, 5 June 2015 01:26 (ten years ago)

Our Way To Fall is one of those songs that gives me so much hope about love and relationships. The opposite of Cherry Chapstick which can be crushing.

Van Horn Street, Friday, 5 June 2015 01:34 (ten years ago)

surprised to see Pablo and Andrea so high, it's nice but never stood out as a highlight

ufo, Friday, 5 June 2015 01:40 (ten years ago)

Pablo and Andrea was on the lower part of my ballot. It's a good song with a master guitar solo.

Very happy to have "Pablo and Andrea" place so high... Top 3 for me - love the guitar sound on that track.

Kinda surprised "Shaker" is nowhere to be seen. Seemed fairly prominent at the time. Or at least a "heard it in a Hal Hartley film" level of prominent.

Also, Tom Courtenay got 2 votes for the acoustic version, if people wondered about its dominance.

I'll bring in more stats tomorrow.

I didnt vote bcz the only album I'm super-familiar with is Electr-o-pura (even though Blue Line Swinger is still my favorite song of all time) but here have this: European stoner metal band doing a YLT tribute on the last thing they released before breaking up. Obv the drummer is stiff compared to Georgia (what drummer isn't?) and the guitarist can't wig out like Ira (only a few can) but I was still struck at how well they nailed it against the odds:

Here are the Top 45. I left things with the numbers that VHS passed on to me. I suspect he's right that some ranked ballots--the ones where people didn't actually fill in the points themselves--were counted as unranked. I say that because that's what I did; I ordered my ballot but didn't fill in the corresponding points, and my #1 ("Moby Octopad") wasn't noted either, until I noticed myself. If this is true, I'm sure a few songs would have shifted around, possibly even at the top. But that's better than if the ballots had been missed altogether. And by and large, the world goes on as before.

1. “Tom Courtenay” (573 points/23 votes/four #1s)
2. “Autumn Sweater” (555/24/x)
3. “Blue Line Swinger” (539/22/3)
4. “From a Motel 6” (484/22/1)
5. “Deeper Into Movies” (412/21/1)

Sorry I missed this poll, but what a nice invitation to listen to the old records again. I would have said 1) Electropura 2) Heart Beating as One 3) Nothing Turned itself etc.

Did anyone remark on the fact that on the list of songs on the back of Electro-Pura, the times are all messed up (deliberately, I'm sure): So that the 9 minute "Blue Line Swinger" is listed at being 3+? Pretty funny.

six years pass...

A FB friend just posted this photo. Because he won't see it, I'll cut-and-paste my comment here (assuming a real name is okay when he posts under his real name): "Raymond Cummings left Facebook, so we're putting you in charge of Yo La Tengo album covers now."
