21 ballots in total, with 16 albums ballots. I'll do the album countdown tonight & then start unrolling ILX's top 40 CCR songs tomorrow morning. 40-26 on Monday, 25-11 on Tuesday, with the top 10 rolling out on Wednesday. Huge thanks to everybody who voted! But you don't need a ballot just to hang around. People on this poll thread are happy to give.

Didn't do an albums ballot, but had Pendulum on while I did my tracks ballot, and the bottom half became littered with its album cuts.

Love, Wilco (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 14 June 2015 23:38 (ten years ago)

yeah Pendulum is deep cuts paradise, kind of gives a glimpse of what CCR could've been in the '70s if they stuck together and became more of an AOR band than a singles factory

some dude, Sunday, 14 June 2015 23:45 (ten years ago)

I didn't do an albums ballot either, but 3 tracks from Pendulum were on my tracks ballot.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Sunday, 14 June 2015 23:45 (ten years ago)

Damn, guys. This is why I like this place. Pendulum was the surprise for me.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 14 June 2015 23:47 (ten years ago)

tbf Pendulum at #5 means that it only placed above two of their albums, one of them being the dreaded Mardi Gras

some dude, Sunday, 14 June 2015 23:56 (ten years ago)

True. I'd be curious to find out if Mardi Gras got any votes when there were only 5 slots on anyone's ballot.

The song was inspired, both musically and for Fogerty's vocal delivery, by 1950s rock n' roll songs, particularly those by Little Richard. In October 1972, the company that held the publishing rights to Richard’s "Good Golly, Miss Molly" felt that "Travelin' Band" bore enough similarities to warrant a plagiarism lawsuit that was later settled out of court.

IIRC, "Settled out of court" was actually Saul Zaentz buying out the company that owned "GGMM", which is kind of a baller move.

My #1 ... Fogerty described it as the template for the whole CCR sound:

"I knew I needed to work on arranging the band so that the band would sound like Creedence Clearwater Revival, would sound professional, mysterious and also have their own definition. The song I chose was 'Susie Q.' I decided not to write the song myself. I decided to pick something that existed because it'd just be easier. I'd be less self-conscious about doing things."

Brad C., Tuesday, 16 June 2015 15:56 (ten years ago)

Also interesting as their take on SF ballroom psych and as a deliberate effort to get on underground FM:

"I told the other guys that the quickest way we could get on the radio, therefore get more exposure and get this thing going was to specifically go in and record an arrangement of 'Susie Q' that could be played on KMPX. It's been said that what we were doing seemed very far removed from the rest of San Francisco, but that's not quite true. 'Suzie Q' was designed to fit right in. The eight-minute opus. Feedback like 'East-West.'"

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 17:00 (ten years ago)

This song has so much meaning for me in these times. A communist administration is trying to fundamentally transorm the United States into something it was never ment to be. You don't have to work anymore, we'll give you a check, you don't have to pray anymore, we are going to do away with God. CCR may not have forseen the happenings of today when they made this song, but I'm calling this a warning to all who would allow the powers that be to take care of you. This kind of thinking, if widespread among the populace, will surely result in disaster, ruin, and mass death and murder.

It's a pity that Fogerty is so hard to understand much of the time because when his lyrics do shine through, like on Don't Look Now, they're incredible.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 June 2015 17:07 (ten years ago)

Fogerty is definitely one of music's most committed lefties, although his music is conservative.

It is unforgivable that Don't Look Now couldn't make it to either version of Chronicle.

The CCR song I hold closest for an odd reason is "Long As I Can See the Light," because I had a dream one night as I was drifting off to sleep that it was written/sung from the perspective of a man who had just died and wasn't sure yet what this death thing was all about. I don't know if that was Fogerty's intention (probably not), but I love that halfway lucid reading of the song.

Not all that surprised by the relatively low ranking of "Proud Mary," as I sensed a bit of a backlash against it in the earlier thread. Me, I had it somewhere in my top 10, but I haven't listened to enough classic rock radio in recent years to ever risk getting sick of it.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:31 (ten years ago)

I enjoy "Wrote a Song for Everyone" as slightly anomalous in their catalogue; a moment of self-awareness that he's looking beyond or back the person right next to him.

etc, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:32 (ten years ago)

the idea that a band could have five songs better than "bad moon rising" seems ludicrous, but here we are.

yes, the guessing game sucks, when people are trying to guess what's coming up around the bend!

Rude Awakening #1

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:42 (ten years ago)

I left "Bad Moon Rising" off my ballot because I find the disparity between the doomy lyrics and the jaunty music too jarring ... the apocalypse is not supposed to sound like "Down on the Corner"

Brad C., Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:42 (ten years ago)

Eye Of The Zombie #1

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)

Still can't believe "Run Through the Jungle" wasn't top 10. That song gives me chills.

"Run Through the Jungle" is the best scary CCR track

Every track in this top 5 will be worthy of #1, but there's one in particular I'd like to see take it.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 18:08 (ten years ago)

I had forgotten how bad Eye of The Zombie is. That killed any moementum he had after Centerfield.

I love the imagined alternative reality -- "Somewhere I lost connections/Ran out of songs to play" -- like somewhere out there is another John Fogerty who didn't get it together.

something totally new, it’s the AOR of the twenty first century (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 18:30 (ten years ago)

great key change in "Lodi"

example (crüt), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 18:59 (ten years ago)

"Lodi" is definitely about an alternative future -- Fogerty fearing that "Suzie Q" might be their only hit -- but it's also about the eight or nine years they played together before becoming CCR

Brad C., Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:01 (ten years ago)

the line every time I've had to play while people sat there drunk gets me every time

Aww, that was my hopeful #1. Obligatory TOO LOW comment.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:13 (ten years ago)

"Lodi" is so good that not even Pavement fucked it up.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:16 (ten years ago)

Out all day...the top 2 are my top 2; unusual. I'm A-OK in either order.

Check that--"Up Around the Bend" was my #2. So I had the top 3--very unusual.

any love for Centerfield? I've never listened to it.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:29 (ten years ago)

iirc it's good, though iirc the singles are the best songs.

The title track affirmed that I wanted nothing to do with baseball.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:33 (ten years ago)

"Rock and Roll Girls" is a minor classic imo. Even with the requisite '80s cheesy sax.

something totally new, it’s the AOR of the twenty first century (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 17 June 2015 19:34 (ten years ago)

I'll always love "Centerfield" since it was the perfect song for me as a 5-year-old Braves fan. Tearin' up the tee-ball field.

One of my pet projects that will never happen is to form a band called Keep On Chooglin', that just plays a lengthy version of Keep On Chooglin' at every show. Album releases? The same. Over and over. Keep On Chooglin', forever.

I think all of my choices placed in the final ballot, haven't checked.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 June 2015 11:11 (ten years ago)

so i was THE only person that didn't vote for "Fortunate Son." nothing against it, i just knew it would do fine and figured if anything else on my ballot had a fighting chance of beating it to #1, i'd help increase those odds (didn't vote for "Proud Mary" with the same reasoning, although obviously it had no chance of #1 in the end).

some dude, Thursday, 18 June 2015 11:43 (ten years ago)

There's literally no pop song I have more admiration for than "Fortunate Son." I mean above and beyond just how great it sounds. It's such an incredibly smart, merciless analysis of Vietnam specifically, but one that extends in any number of directions from there.

question since the youtube list is making me want to listen to things over and over and i can't sit here at the computer forever --
if i have to purchase one item that has
* the most good songs
* the long version of grapevine
* ramble tamble

which CCR product should i purchase? help please i don't want to figure this out if there is an easy answer!!

Florianne Fracke (La Lechera), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:28 (ten years ago)

Well Grapevine + Ramble Tamble are on Cosmo's Factory but there's a lot of compilations too.

The Manner of Crawly (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:30 (ten years ago)

Cosmo's Factory! xp

Easiest route may be to just get Chronicle and go to youtube whenever you want to hear the long Grapevine.

it's not arugula science (WilliamC), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:33 (ten years ago)

ok that sounds good
i already have green river
thank you

i wonder how many people have named their practice spaces "cosmo's factory"

for example: no i need long grapevine in portable format so i can take it to cosmo's factory!

Florianne Fracke (La Lechera), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:35 (ten years ago)

The CD version of Chronicle Vol. 1 has the full version of "Grapevine" but doesn't have "Ramble Tamble," which is on Vol. 2. Honestly getting both Vol. 1 & 2 is never a waste of anyone's money.

example (crüt), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:36 (ten years ago)

that's all I owned for years and felt reasonably satisfied. You basically own 85 percent of their catalog w/those two comps (no "Effigy" though).

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:43 (ten years ago)

CCR are like Al Green: a singles band that recorded great albums w/deep cuts yet you won't feel unsatisfied w/owning the GH.

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:44 (ten years ago)

that makes sense, good to know
i think the greatest hits would lead me to cosmo's factory eventually so i guess maybe i'll just start there since i def already know the hits (although the long version of grapevine was new to me!)

Florianne Fracke (La Lechera), Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:49 (ten years ago)

there's a funny bit in "Up Around the Bend" where Fogerty describes listening to their version of Grapevine on the radio and thinking to himself "wtf not ANOTHER chorus!?"

Οὖτις, Thursday, 18 June 2015 16:52 (ten years ago)

I didn't want to put too many covers on my ballot, but they did amazing covers. In addition to "Grapevine," I'd single out "Ninety-Nine and a Half (Won't Do)" on the debut and especially "Good Golly Miss Molly" on Bayou Country -- even more intense and energetic than Little Richard's version.

9. Sinister Purpose
10. Run Through the Jungle

If I was to do it again, I'd find a way to include "Bootleg" and "Walk On the Water" and I'd move Green River up to #3 on the albums list

I feel bad for these guys and, like, Van Halen and Kiss. you'd think SOMEDAY the acrimony would end but it's just gonna keep going until they're all dead.

that's a long song title

The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 11 July 2015 03:32 (ten years ago)

Easy for me to say, but--while I can certainly see going to court over song royalties; CCR is still all over at least a couple of radio formats--if this is just about the other two guys using the CCR name, I'd say let it go. I don't see Fogerty's (John's) legacy or whatever threatened by this at all. And that can't be that much money involved.

clemenza, Saturday, 11 July 2015 03:38 (ten years ago)

clemenza, Saturday, 11 July 2015 05:37 (ten years ago)

In all honesty, after seeing recent-ish clips of Fogerty's band, where Kenny Aaronoff plays like he took "ham-fisted" as a compliment, I'd much rather go to a Revisited show.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 11 July 2015 12:03 (ten years ago)

always thought that Elliott Easton must be really hard up that he's stuck with Cook and Clifford for so many years…or maybe he relates to guys who labored semi-anonymously under an autocrat…

veronica moser, Saturday, 11 July 2015 13:43 (ten years ago)

i heard a (recent?) Fogerty live recording on the radio a while back and his voice sounded absolutely shot, almost transformed, it took me a couple minutes to realize it was actually JF and not someone else butchering his songs. so i probably wouldn't go to see him live, but i wouldn't go to a Revisited show either, for different reasons.

some dude, Saturday, 11 July 2015 14:34 (ten years ago)

Wonder if there's any CCRevisited tribute bands out there. Bet they put on a show.

pplains, Saturday, 11 July 2015 14:35 (ten years ago)

Last time I saw Fogerty--only time in years--was on Letterman a year or two ago, when his Creedence redo album was out, doing "Someday Never Comes" with a band I didn't recognize. I thought they sounded great, although a ravaged voice, for that particular song, might have been part of what appealed to me.

clemenza, Saturday, 11 July 2015 14:41 (ten years ago)

always thought that Elliott Easton must be really hard up that he's stuck with Cook and Clifford for so many years…

I can't imagine how horrible it must be to play with such a unique and swinging rhythm section night after night.

As unquestionably brilliant as Fogerty was, he wasn't/isn't Creedence (and he seems to think he is). Listening to Kenny Aaronoff's caps-lock butchering of "Ramble Tamble" made me realize that the CCR version is nearly as much Clifford's song as it is Fogerty's.

"Chooglin'" was my #2. If the RAH set had been out when this poll happened, that version of "Chooglin'" would've been my #1.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 23 March 2023 14:54 (two years ago)

If I had voted, I might have had "Chameleon" somewhere at the bottom of the ballot, even if it's not typical of their work. Without Fogerty's vocal, you might mistake it for any act in 1970 trying to get on AM radio, but it's very spirited and catchy.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:28 (two years ago)

(xp) #7 in mine. Don't hate me, people.

Maggot Bairn (Tom D.), Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:29 (two years ago)

I'm thinking that Pendulum, their supposed attempt to sell themselves as a "serious album band" by late 1970 standards, goes to extremes with their most "bubblegum" material and also their most avant-garde/progressive (or whatever "Rude Awakening #2" is supposed to be). Was this a White Album-style "we can be eclectic too" statement?

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 23 March 2023 15:32 (two years ago)
