I like how she debuts with a slow one instead of trying to impress the kids with a banger for which she might be accused of sounding "dated."
also: "Lonely" and "Making Love in the Rain" are good influences.

no sleep is pretty insipid. the come-ons in the lyrics sound completely tired and workwoman-like. why is anyone excited about this? and i used to be a massive janet fan.
― StillAdvance, Friday, 24 July 2015 15:53 (ten years ago)
You have heard the stuff that made you a "used to be" fan right? That "No Sleeep" isn't 20 Y.O. is cause for celebration.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 24 July 2015 16:05 (ten years ago)
Also, it's chill af.
yeah the fact that it's kind of pleasant and unassuming and maybe, if we're being generous, more in line with her '90s midtempo stuff, is pretty reassuring just because she was really flailing around stylistically with those last few albums. curious to see what the rest of the record sounds like and if this is just a buzz single for something else soon to come.

― Y Kant Max Read (Stevie D(eux)), Thursday, 3 September 2015 12:36 (ten years ago)
Janet Jackson has detailed Unbreakable, her first new album since 2008's Discipline. It's out October 2 via Rhythm Nation/BMG, and features the singles "No Sleeep" (feat. J. Cole) and "The Great Forever", as well as a Missy Elliott collab called "Burnitup!" That's the artwork above; scroll down for the tracklist.
According to a press release, the album's themes include "Janet’s views on where we stand today as individuals and as the inter-related elements of a planet. Some of these relate to her convictions passionately expressed in Rhythm Nation 1814, including the need to bring things out in the open and to have a dialogue. The album also will mark the first time Janet Jackson has opened up about her brother Michael and with reflections concerning her youth."
The record continues Jackson's collaboration with producer-songwriter team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Speaking about the project, the pair said:
It’s wonderful to be creating again with Janet. From songwriting, producing, arranging, singing, dancing, acting, she deftly does it all and truly personifies the word artist. Unbreakable is a gift to all of her fans who have steadfastly stood by her. It is a subject for conversation, a plea for compassion, and a call for action from someone who’s come a long way, but’s got a long way to go, and has much to say about it. In other words, if you want to know what’s on her mind you only have to listen.

what's cool about this album is that she's actually doing some newish stuff by her standards without it sounding like she's trying to catch up to pop? like, "dammn baby" and "shoulda known better" don't have obvious precedents in her catalog but they both are incredible (i guess "dammn baby" is a bit dj mustardy but it has a very janet groove)
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:24 (ten years ago)
in a way this sort of reminds me of the last mariah album in that it doesn't reach too far back to her classics nor does it feel like it's quite trying to play catch up... it's sort of in a very comfortable middle ground
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:28 (ten years ago)
also: disco
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:29 (ten years ago)
This is the first time she's recorded a bunch of ballads, each with a distinct sound, and not bore me.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:30 (ten years ago)
it also gets into sounds that were always kind of in her music but never expressed as explicitly. thinking of how much "lessons learned" reminds me of joni
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:33 (ten years ago)
or "after you fall," which is a great janet ballad reduced to its skeleton
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:34 (ten years ago)
also the sly stone pastiche of "gon be alright"
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:36 (ten years ago)
pretty excited to tuck into this
― Meta Forksclove-Liebeskind (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 1 October 2015 15:36 (ten years ago)
i don't want to say this album underwhelmed me because a lot of it is just incredibly good - the ballads are so tactile and captivating, i wish "promise" was a full song but "lessons learned" and "after you fall" are very special. but as an album it doesn't quite cohere for me, a lot of the first half is...fine but not GREAT. "dammn baby" is awesome but a lot of the filterhousey tracks don't have much urgency to them. it's a good album if you take it for what it is, maybe there was no reason we should have expected her to return with a masterpiece
i've always thought discipline was way underrated but this is probably on the same level
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 09:01 (ten years ago)
this is way more consistent than discipline
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 11:44 (ten years ago)
the Jam/Lewis-free Discipline is barely even canon imo
― some dude, Friday, 2 October 2015 12:39 (ten years ago)
"so much betta", "feedback", "discipline" and "rollercoaster" are as good as anything else janet did in the 00s
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:03 (ten years ago)
I'm sure I can create a decent '00s Janet playlist, and "Feedback" and "Rock with U" would be on it, but from All For You onwards I gotta fight my own indifference. A lot of what came naturally sounded automatic, and those albums were the first ones in which she wasn't changing her sonic approach. I could be wrong: I haven't heard 20 Y.O. since fall 2006.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:06 (ten years ago)
Keep it that way.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:10 (ten years ago)

the '00s janet record that doesn't get enough love is damita jo which is mostly really awesome
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:23 (ten years ago)
anyway i was listening to this record with my friend last night and she was really stunned by side two, especially when it suddenly transforms into what she characterized as a "psych country album"
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:24 (ten years ago)
The full version of "Promise" is "Promise of You" and is only available on the Target deluxe edition.
And yes, Damita Jo is the post-All For You Janet album most deserving of re-evaluation imo.
― Greer, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:27 (ten years ago)
omggggg i had no idea i'm running to find this
"all nite (don't stop)" off damita jo is ridiculously great, i was gonna revisit the album last week but i no longer have it!
agree the second half of unbreakable is brilliant, but some of the bits before that kicks in feel a bit inessential

"Well Traveled" drags imo. Maybe it's the drums? Or the vocal melody?
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:39 (ten years ago)
"well traveled"'s instrumentation is amazing, idk alfred
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:45 (ten years ago)
It's possible I don't like to hear her voice mixed up.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:46 (ten years ago)
"well traveled" would sound like well-earned corniness if what had come before had been more of an epic journey than a half-decent grab-bag
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:47 (ten years ago)
to be clear, there's nothing i outright dislike here (well apart from "gon b alright", retro cheese is not for you janet!) but "burnitup", "shoulda known better", "broken hearts heal", "night", "dream maker/euphoria", too much of that first half is just...decent-ish, some nice touches, but doesn't lift off like her best stuff does, it's just there
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:49 (ten years ago)
lol i would not characterize this album as a half-decent grab bag, jeez
i like pretty much every song here though
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:50 (ten years ago)
every song you listed is awesome
"dream maker" especially bc it changes keys on every chord (to simulate the decay of the sample) which makes it sound like a scritti politti song vocally
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:51 (ten years ago)
I looked for a Saadiq credit on "Gon B Alright" tbh
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:52 (ten years ago)
"shoulda known better" is a really perverse euphoric trance song, the way it drops off into nothing after every single chorus

i like pretty much every song here but there's a big gap between that and "awesome"!
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:53 (ten years ago)
i mean, i liked it better before i revisited her discography and raised my standards
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:54 (ten years ago)
and idgaf about "retro cheese" when it sounds as ecstatic and present as "gon be alright"
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:54 (ten years ago)
ok lol
i don't think "sounding like a scritti politti song" is a high priority for me re: janet jackson
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 13:55 (ten years ago)
I still love "No Sleeep" w/out J. Cole.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 13:55 (ten years ago)
i can't find the full "promise of you" on the internet -_-

so is "2 b loved" which is probably my favorite song here
Can we all agree that Janet from Control through Velvet Rope is an unreasonable standard to hold anyone to, even Janet herself?
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 14:00 (ten years ago)
i mean that's the thing. I had no reason to believe that she and jam/lewis would release an album this consistent, especially one that builds over time in the way this does. i've been listening to all of her records for months in anticipation of this so their excellence hasn't diminished for me but I don't think their excellence diminishes this record either. janet, jam, and lewis made a record that feels both modest and exploratory and extremely rich in detail (the sneeze in "great forever," the piano over the displaced time synth riff in "night," the way "broken hearts heal" is the most appropriate mj tribute bc it sounds exported from the boards of off the wall) and, like, that's awesome as hell
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 14:14 (ten years ago)

"the great forever" reminds me of "radar"
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 14:59 (ten years ago)
"burnitup", "shoulda known better", "broken hearts heal", "night", "dream maker/euphoria", too much of that first half is just...decent-ish,
i vehemently disagree with this assessment!!!!!
― J0rdan S., Friday, 2 October 2015 15:18 (ten years ago)
"night" is kinda buried in the first half but i just need to talk about how amazing it is. the million janets in the chorus, the way the aerial "ooohs" combine with the ascending "after the LOVE tonight," how it becomes a straight up minneapolis funk song after the second chorus
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Friday, 2 October 2015 15:24 (ten years ago)
niiiiiiight
God, I love the "Sexy Dancer" undertones in the last half of "Night."
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Friday, 2 October 2015 15:37 (ten years ago)
i forgot "take me away", that's another totally blah one
― lex pretend, Friday, 2 October 2015 15:54 (ten years ago)

The second half of "Night" sounds like the second half of "I Wanna Be Your Lover".

"Take Me Away" is one of my favorites -- a change of pace.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 2 October 2015 20:13 (ten years ago)
"Black Eagle" was helping me a lot when I was in a dark spot last night. Someone mentioned "Dammn Baby" sounding like Dawn Richard, but that one's even more Dawn-like to me.
― The Reverend, Friday, 2 October 2015 20:15 (ten years ago)

― Ys Man a.k.a. Have One on G (geoffreyess), Saturday, 3 October 2015 02:11 (ten years ago)
pka is 'professionally known as,' that's still obv what she performs under and how she is named on the feature credit for "Burnitup" (now that i think we'll ever see a new Missy album at this rate)

While the album is unrelentingly positive and clean-cut -- a relief for listeners who winced at the lurid content laced through Discipline and certain earlier points in the discography...
Wince. Is Allmusic obligated to keep reinforcing this tired line of thinking?
― Ys Man a.k.a. Have One on G (geoffreyess), Sunday, 4 October 2015 16:01 (ten years ago)
Meanwhile, Zoladz's review doesn't really stand up for Janet's last few albums but at least critiques the way they were received. http://www.vulture.com/2015/10/album-review-janet-jacksons-unbreakable.html
And I'm happy to see her mention how much Janet's voice sounds like her brother's on some of the new songs. I'd worried I was imagining it.

Acknowledging a line of thinking -- a common one, going by the reaction I'm seeing/hearing -- is not reinforcing it.

You're right, the reviews I was thinking of are older than I realized. I read a certain judgment in the word lurid, but was probably just having bad flashbacks.

co signing on the love for Black Eagle; think it's the deep cut that will stick with me the most.
i respect her willingness to put a country ballad like Well Travelled next to a faux Family Stone jam like Gon B Alright but I'm not positive i really am into either of them... but they both feel like they reward return attempts to try.
in any case, all three of the singles (BURNITUP, Unbreakable, No Sleeep [preferably minus Cole but he don't fuck it up too badly]) hold up to repeat listening super well; I have been playing all three more or less into the ground.
Dammn Baby, Broken Hearts Heal, 2 B Loved, Lessons Learned, Shoulda Known Better feel like the best of the rest
There's not many outright missteps from the rest of the album and some genuine potential for tracks to engage over time
For a 2015 janet album, this is probably better than it has any right to be.

― The Reverend, Monday, 5 October 2015 04:46 (ten years ago)
The one song from Discipline that's really stuck with me is "This Can't Be Good"
― The Reverend, Monday, 5 October 2015 04:47 (ten years ago)
"the 1" is good but it's hard for me to get over how specifically dated a rich harrison rip off sounds atm
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 October 2015 05:22 (ten years ago)
The first 6 full tracks on Discipline are basically the only ones I listen to if I ever do listen to anything from that album.
― Greer, Monday, 5 October 2015 14:09 (ten years ago)
"so much betta" has never really been taken out of regular rotation on certain playlists for me, it's one of her best ever bangers. head and shoulders the discipline standout imo
― lex pretend, Monday, 5 October 2015 14:59 (ten years ago)
ctrl-f "The Great Forever"
what the hell is wrong with all of you
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 21:57 (ten years ago)
that song is wonderful, i've had it in my head for three straight days
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Monday, 5 October 2015 21:59 (ten years ago)
The thing that's getting me, 5 songs in, is how... EFFORTLESS this all sounds, especially compared to a lot of the Jermaine Dupre-era
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:02 (ten years ago)
I mean don't get me wrong, the labored lurching of "Feedback" is totally what makes and elevates that song so it's not like I'm saying "THIS IS WHAT JANET MUST DO" (and I know that's Rodney Jerkins, not Jermaine Dupri) (btw I have never liked "Rock With U" and probably never will) but, six songs in, this album exudes class in a way Janet hasn't approached since... The Velvet Rope?
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:05 (ten years ago)
for me it's her best album since TVR, and I relistened to the otherwise fine Damity Joe on Saturday.

I thought "Night" was going to be a dip but then the beat started ^_^
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:13 (ten years ago)
this album is not better than 'all for you' not even by a longshot imo but it's def her best, or at least her most comfortable sounding & consistent, since then
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 October 2015 22:16 (ten years ago)
I played All For You to death for about a year and then put it on the shelf and never, ever went back to it. The only song from it that I ever go out of my way to play now is "Doesn't Really Matter".
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:19 (ten years ago)
I wish I had more specific criticism of AFY that isn't "eh not bad." I thought "Runaway" was a better meta-comment on her stardom and her relationship w/a mass audience than "All For You," but maybe I love "The Glow of Love" too much for me settle.
― The burrito of ennui (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:20 (ten years ago)
"Dream Maker/Euphoria" !!!!!!!!!!
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:23 (ten years ago)
as we sort of talked about on the all for you thread, it's very formulaic compared to the velvet rope -- almost a 1:1 conversion rate. but it's still a front to back good album with a little soft spot in the middle & c'mon this album doesn't have any songs nearly as good as "all for you," "doesn't really matter," "someone to call my lover" & it's really missing those sort of suspended in air sex ballads like "when we ooo" & "love scene (ooh baby)"
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 October 2015 22:24 (ten years ago)
i kinda consider "2 b loved" one of her best songs ever and think it def approaches the all for you singles
i'm insane though
― insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:26 (ten years ago)
So far, I agree nothing is as good as "Doesn't Really Matter".

"No Sleeep" is as good as "Doesn't Really Matter."

better
― Spottie, Monday, 5 October 2015 22:29 (ten years ago)
i'm sort of torn on "2 b loved" cuz those little bird chirp keyboards are a bit too reminiscent of "doesn't really matter" and as such the song doesn't quite fit w/ the rest of the record for me
― J0rdan S., Monday, 5 October 2015 22:29 (ten years ago)
i mean, "doesn't really matter" is a crazy high bar -- "all for you" has more great songs than this record imo
why is "Promise" only 57 seconds long

okay "Well Traveled" appears to be my first wholesale dud on the album (but I've thought that twice before and then a verse/chorus hooked me) (not really happening this time, though)
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:41 (ten years ago)
All for You has three great songs and I'm all about the ballad epic, but beyond that it's her first by the numbers effort.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:44 (ten years ago)
Would've pruned one or two songs off side two of this album, but otherwise it's so much more consistent than I expected from her by now.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:45 (ten years ago)
"Well Traveled" feels like Janet covering The Lumineers
"Gon' B Alright" in comparison is like a lightning bolt, definitely enhanced due to following an outright slog
― I Am Curious (Dolezal) (DJP), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:45 (ten years ago)
I like that they make Janet's voice sound like a squeezebox organ in "Well Traveled." Don't like the Lumineers undertones.
― Norse Jung (Eric H.), Monday, 5 October 2015 22:47 (ten years ago)
Actually "Gon' Be Alright" sounds like Janet Jackson feat. Wondaland

I've never liked "All For You" even slightly, but I immediately thought "Glow of Love" was amazing when I heard it years later. Really the only AFY single I like that much is "Someone to Be My Lover". "Doesn't Really Matter" is ok I guess. I didn't like it at the time. I guess AFY has had the disadvantage for me of coming out during my underground rap purist phase, so I've never been able to hear it with ears that were both fresh and open to it.
For my money, Damita Jo is her best post-Velvet Rope album.

in general, re the all for you talk, i think this album is pretty comparable to it quality-wise, as is discipline, though the best songs on each of those are really different, as are the less compelling moments. all of them feel a bit overlong, it's not just that pruning them would have got rid of the inessential songs but made them a more coherent front-to-back experience - nothing post-AFY seems to merit its epic length to me
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 12:05 (ten years ago)
it's funny what a 7-yr-hiatus will do though; there was a pre-release expectation for this to be Peak Janet which didn't exist for her last couple of albums
― lex pretend, Wednesday, 7 October 2015 12:06 (ten years ago)
when she was hugely successful she released albums every 3-4 years, so the way she started releasing albums every 2 years as her sales were dropping really made it feel like a frantic flailing downward spiral. i think probably everyone needed some time away to miss her.

I would've liked to hear more of the new songs, but the only real disappointment was when the pre-show DJ played (apparently by accident) a few seconds of Jazmine Sullivan's "Let it Burn," then cut it short. It might've slowed the energy a bit but I was so itching to hear it.

Bonus: Janet lip-syncing Kendrick as bits of "Poetic Justice" led into "Any Time Any Place."

Loved this show so much more than the All For You tour.

my show went from Feb to August and now to like probably never?
No word on whether Jackson, 49, and her husband, 41-year-old Qatari billionaire Wissam Al Mana, are looking to build their family the old-fashioned way or through other means.
