That includes cover songs, live versions, collaborations, radio edits, etc. If votes are received for different versions of the same song though, they will all be tallied for the studio version of that song, albeit with notations when listed in the final results. Songs not featuring Metallica performing will not be counted. This could include other bands covering Metallica or other artists sampling Metallica. (Feel free to vote for the demo version of "The Mechanix" though your vote will be ultimately counted as a vote for "The Four Horsemen".)

I'm guessing the results of this poll won't exactly look like a bell curve by the end, but I would encourage taking a second listen to some of the last few albums. You can either reaffirm your hate for Load or perhaps find something in there that may have aged a bit more properly than you would have imagined.

I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb to say something from the first four will win this (though there is "one" black horse in this race that could ruin that prediction), but I wouldn't mind seeing some Death Magnetic song at No. 21 or whatever.

But I'm not going to push it either because, Lord, some of that later stuff does indeed suck.

Also just realized that Metallica had an album called Load while the Velvet Underground had one called Loaded.

can't imagine i'll be voting for basically anything post-Justice, but that's a testament to the strength of the first four albums as much as anything.

I cut my one black album track at the last minute.

God, I'm kinda regretting it now.

My ballot will have 1 Black Album track, 1 from Load, and 3 from Death Magnetic.

i'm going to take this very seriously. but i'm afraid these albums are so worn into my brain that only the deep cuts can really excite me, so there's a real possibility that 'Frayed Ends of Sanity' or something will be my #1.

big surprise from assembling my ballot is that i think justice is my favorite of the classic albums now

It's been hilarious reading old Usenet posts from Metallica newsgroups circa 1996 around the time of Load's release. Loads of snarky posts about how the band have "lost it" and have "sold out" ... the main gist is that the fans felt that Metallica were deliberately trying to fit in with the alternative music scene of the time rather than stay true to themselves. Thing is, I reckon that Metallica were staying true to themselves... I think that Load and Reload were genuinely the albums they wanted to make at that time.

i've mentioned this before, but the first music file i ever downloaded was an mp2 (!!!) of a live performance of "2x4", well before Load came out. it sounded horrible but also kinda awesome & exciting because of how distorted & lo-fi it was.

'Sad But True' has a deeper groove than any of the groove-based tunes on Load/Reload.

There are some really excellent instrumental passages on DM and a couple of great choruses. Only one actually fully rounded great song though, which just missed my ballot.

I must have heard 'Blackened' hundreds upon hundreds of times, and I'm still not bored of it. It's one of those tracks that for some reason has always felt as potent to me as the first time I ever heard it.

i also listened to no life til leather for the first time today and idk how accurate this is bc they were contemporaneous but 1982 hetfield seems to be really going for a king diamond effect

i only just realized the other day that it was a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 (their only one). there will be a lot of 90s sellout 'Tallica on my ballot but definitely not "Until It Sleeps."

I don't detest >1990 Metallica but including any of those songs would've bumped off a much better song of 80s Metallica.

Relistening to Until it Sleeps, it's a well written song with some nice melodies and dynamics, but the guitars are piss-weak, which is unforgivable in a Metallica track.

i love his weird single-stroke rolls here, they're a little janky in a way that's consistent every time.

i put 'Until It Sleeps' on the bottom reaches of my ballot, because the verses don't sound like anything else they've done. or maybe just because it was the first post-black album song released, and rock radio played it on the hour until i decided i liked it.

just listened back to it for the first time in forever and wow, fretless bass and surf tremolo.
