Sometimes, the witty thread title puns write themselves, amirite?
Welcome to the Metallica Poll, a ranking of the Top 25 songs performed by the seminal Bay Area metal band. Here's what you can send:
http://i.imgur.com/t0XANDT.gif • 20 tracks, ranked in the usual ILM™ way: No. 1 gets 40 points, 2:36, 3:33, 4:30, 5:28, 6:26, 7:25, 8:24, 9:23, 10:22, 11:21, 12:20, 13:19, 14:18, 15:17, 16:16, 17:15, 18:14, 19:13, 20:12.http://i.imgur.com/t0XANDT.gif • Include your favorite album.http://i.imgur.com/t0XANDT.gif • And define one particular moment when this band jumped the shark. Was it when Dave was kicked out? When they covered Tuesday’s Gone? Or maybe even What do you mean “jump the shark,” you little Internet asshole?
http://i.imgur.com/n5ZMkrH.jpg
Any song credited to Metallica will be accepted. That includes cover songs, live versions, collaborations, radio edits, etc. If votes are received for different versions of the same song though, they will all be tallied for the studio version of that song, albeit with notations when listed in the final results. Songs not featuring Metallica performing will not be counted. This could include other bands covering Metallica or other artists sampling Metallica. (Feel free to vote for the demo version of "The Mechanix" though your vote will be ultimately counted as a vote for "The Four Horsemen".)
http://i.imgur.com/shildaA.jpg”Do what now?”
Please send all ballots to ForWhomThe (at) Lycos.com.
http://i.imgur.com/e3HgOjc.jpg
Voting concludes on Thursday, July 2, at 2300 CDT. (Fri., July 3, 0400 UTC). There's a big American holiday weekend coming up, so I'll have more time than usual to compile the votes. Results could be released as early as Monday, July 7.
So come on! Jump in the fire!

I'm guessing the results of this poll won't exactly look like a bell curve by the end, but I would encourage taking a second listen to some of the last few albums. You can either reaffirm your hate for Load or perhaps find something in there that may have aged a bit more properly than you would have imagined.
I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb to say something from the first four will win this (though there is "one" black horse in this race that could ruin that prediction), but I wouldn't mind seeing some Death Magnetic song at No. 21 or whatever.
But I'm not going to push it either because, Lord, some of that later stuff does indeed suck.

It's been hilarious reading old Usenet posts from Metallica newsgroups circa 1996 around the time of Load's release. Loads of snarky posts about how the band have "lost it" and have "sold out" ... the main gist is that the fans felt that Metallica were deliberately trying to fit in with the alternative music scene of the time rather than stay true to themselves. Thing is, I reckon that Metallica were staying true to themselves... I think that Load and Reload were genuinely the albums they wanted to make at that time.
― You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:06 (ten years ago)
Brad, your Loady playlist is remarkably similar to the Unloaded mix I made for myself ages ago.
Except I loathe "Hero of the Day."
― Falconetti Pot (Leee), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:26 (ten years ago)
i've mentioned this before, but the first music file i ever downloaded was an mp2 (!!!) of a live performance of "2x4", well before Load came out. it sounded horrible but also kinda awesome & exciting because of how distorted & lo-fi it was.
― lil urbane (Jordan), Thursday, 25 June 2015 20:29 (ten years ago)

i only just realized the other day that it was a top 10 hit on the Hot 100 (their only one). there will be a lot of 90s sellout 'Tallica on my ballot but definitely not "Until It Sleeps."

I don't detest >1990 Metallica but including any of those songs would've bumped off a much better song of 80s Metallica.
― Siegbran, Thursday, 2 July 2015 22:23 (ten years ago)
yeh iirc it was all over the radio
realizing now thats prob how it made my ballot lol

i admire "until it sleeps" for foregrounding its bass line but almost every song on reload is better than it

some dude and i are brothers in metallica
i will forever be grateful to Bob Rock for teaching Metallica about the values of repetition and singing like a cartoon pirate

Relistening to Until it Sleeps, it's a well written song with some nice melodies and dynamics, but the guitars are piss-weak, which is unforgivable in a Metallica track.

the guitars are weak but also it's one of those times when Lars tries to play with a 'light touch' and the results are just ghastly

i love his weird single-stroke rolls here, they're a little janky in a way that's consistent every time.
i put 'Until It Sleeps' on the bottom reaches of my ballot, because the verses don't sound like anything else they've done. or maybe just because it was the first post-black album song released, and rock radio played it on the hour until i decided i liked it.

just listened back to it for the first time in forever and wow, fretless bass and surf tremolo.

Until It Sleeps is probably Hetfield's best attempt at singing. mind you, he should never have attempted singing.
