Reunions: LCD Soundsystem, Guns 'n Roses, A Tribe Called Quest, and I believe Husker Du. Maybe the Promise Ring too.

GNR is Axl, Slash, Duff, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer, and possibly Izzy. Tribe will be backed by the Roots.

They make money either way. The thing basically sells out without even a single act announced. Coachella grossed $78 million last year. A super-expensive act like GNR (who are getting $8 million; seriously) is a relative money-loser in the short term, as that's twice what even some very big acts might get, and more like 4-10x what more ordinary headliners might, but helps build the brand in the long.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (benbbag), Thursday, 31 December 2015 05:57 (nine years ago)

Husker Du, really? I don't think Greg has played in decades, and dunno if Grant really drums or screams like he did. Bob isin great shape, at least.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (benbbag), Thursday, 31 December 2015 15:40 (nine years ago)

Actually, if these reunions are exclusive to huge, lame, expensive outdoor fests, a la Outkast, then no, it's not quite the same as a reunion tour. It just rubs it in your face. Sure, you can see them again, but only in a less than ideal environment, with bad sound, for a small fortune. Like any dayglo glasses 19 year old wants to see (however unlikely) Husker Du. I have no problem paying a premium to get another shot at a favorite band, but not one hampered by thousands of jackasses out in the sun.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:25 (nine years ago)

Feels like it was only yesterday everyone was laughing at a video of Axl failing horribly at singing one of his old songs.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:30 (nine years ago)

Wake me up when LCD Sucksystem is broken up for good.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:32 (nine years ago)

Because they are so boring that just reading about LCD Soundsystem in the news has put me to sleep.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:33 (nine years ago)

I'm sure Husker Du isn't going to exclusively play Coachella or any other festival. LCD might, though the one they were going to play in NYC may have been canceled. Would be funny if they did that omg-you-have-to-be-there show (which I passed on in part because I seriously doubted it would be their last) at MSG then came back to play Barclays 5 years later.

Comprehensive Nuclear Suggest-Ban Treaty (benbbag), Thursday, 31 December 2015 17:51 (nine years ago)

They're also playing Bonnaroo, either Pitchfork or Lollapalooza, HARD Summer, at least one London festival (British Summer Time, I believe), and possibly Primavera and Sasquatch (among others?).

Where's Steven Tyler? I mean Adler? He contributed more to those classic tracks than he gets credit for.

The reasons he was kicked out of the band make him still unable to perform reliably now.

the top man in the language department (誤訳侮辱), Friday, 1 January 2016 01:57 (nine years ago)

GNR basically old GNR plus nu GNR. Regardless, last time I saw the band Axl couldn't make it more than one song without a dash to the wings for (we presume) a hit of O2.

I will admit to have attended said festival, I was still under 30 and stayed at a Super 8 or something comparable

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 14:56 (nine years ago)

I went when I was 30, I think, and I camped. the crowd didn't seem super duper young to me, I didn't feel out of place in the campground. it was really fucking hot during the days though & I'd never go again.

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:11 (nine years ago)

I went the would-be Cocteau year, and it seemed OK. Went to a bunch of Lollas after that, and they kept getting worse on pace with my age. All shirtless Bros and practically shirtless gals now, like My First Bacchanal.

Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:36 (nine years ago)

the chicago lollapalooza lineup of the late 00s really felt like a weird mishmash of the previous year's coachella lineup plus a few reunion acts. went to that a couple times, too, and as nice as being lakeside is, the humidity + heat was even more grueling than coachella's heat. at least the desert drops 20 degrees at night.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:46 (nine years ago)

i haven't been to a big national headliner music festival since probably warped tour in 2000 when i was 17

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:52 (nine years ago)

good policy, imo

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:53 (nine years ago)

yea in some ways i'm cool w/ it and find it hard to care about large festivals, who is headlining what and all that, and it all seems outrageously expensive w/ little payoff but i have to admit i think i would be fun to go to one in a cool setting w/ good friends and some good drugs

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:58 (nine years ago)

im 32 w/ kids now so that is not happening any time for me so i wonder a little bit

marcos, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 15:58 (nine years ago)

It's a nice way to see artists that might not widely tour, or catch a bunch of headliners that would be individually expensive, but there are some fierce tradeoffs.

imo people who are 32 w/kids are almost more likely to go to festivals -- drop your kids off with relatives, see your whole year's allotment of live music in a weekend.

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:03 (nine years ago)

yeah that was my experience!

my brother has gone to bonnaroo every year and he makes green so he gets a vip pass & has a blast.

I ain't so young anymore but I still think going to one of the big euro festivals would be fun. it all depends on the weather imo

droit au butt (Euler), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:18 (nine years ago)

the social anxiety of being around 10k people is a bit much

μpright mammal (mh), Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:37 (nine years ago)

i haven't been to a big national headliner music festival since probably warped tour in 2000 when i was 17

Trying to think when my last one was. Things like Terrastock, the Arthur fests, On Land, Bottled Smoke et al don't count, they're intentionally lower-level, more relaxed affairs for enthusiasts, even if Sonic Youth headlined two of them. The original This Ain't No Picnic in 1999 -- which seemed that year to be Coachella's competition given they started then too, and which I liked in comparison because it was a lot closer and only one day -- might have been the last really big scale one for me, and even then compared to Coachella it was a much smaller affair, some thousands but nowhere like tens of thousands. And of course, Sonic Youth headlined that too. So I guess Lollapalooza 1994 -- NOT the year Sonic Youth headlined. Plenty of Mr. Corgan instead.

the social anxiety of being around 10k people is a bit much

I've never minded it too much, but I prefer it to be for a standalone touring headliner we're all there to see, not a shifting lineup where you can't be sure who the hell people are really there for.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 6 January 2016 16:45 (nine years ago)

I think Ozzfest 2005 was my last big one, and that was small compared to things like Bonnaroo, Coachella or Pitchfork, none of which I would ever attend, just because they tend to have, at most, 5 or 6 acts I like out of dozens, plus I'd have to be around the kind of people who think attending massive music festivals is a fun thing to do.

In terms of albums, N.W.A-related titles occupy 10 slots on the Billboard 200 chart, led by the group’s Dr. Dre at No. 3 with his new set Compton. Right behind him at No. 4 is N.W.A’s own Straight Outta Compton, which flies 30-4 (a new peak).

Being seriously reported that Coachella is actively trying to book McCartney, Dylan, the Stones, the Who, Roger Waters and Neil Young for a fest in October.

Under the tentative plans, Dylan and the Stones would play back to back on Oct. 7 to open the new festival. They would be followed on Oct. 8 by Neil Young and the Promise of the Real band that has been on tour with him for the last two years, and McCartney and his touring band.

The event would conclude on Oct. 9 with the Who and ex-Pink Floyd bassist, songwriter and singer Waters.

Sufjan Stevens

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 04:29 (nine years ago)

Enjoyed Louis the Child but i'm highly skeptical they did anything other than press play on a premixed cd and dance around like pricks. Sounded good though. I'm trying to stay awake for UW too, and then maybe LCD Soundsystem but it's been a long week and i'm sure this will be archived.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 16 April 2016 04:29 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 04:51 (nine years ago)

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 16 April 2016 05:27 (nine years ago)

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 16 April 2016 22:46 (nine years ago)

Have they posted their re-run schedule for the streams? They were replaying highlights this morning. It'd be nice if I could wake up a little early and see Grimes instead of it starting at 1:15am

μpright mammal (mh), Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:04 (nine years ago)

i only know Alvvays because of that super catchy song "Archie, Marry Me." i think they would be described as jangle pop, which i do love.

xpost

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:17 (nine years ago)

Have they posted their re-run schedule for the streams?

i don't think they will do this until the weekend is over.

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:25 (nine years ago)

All three things streaming right now are pretty much tied for the worst.

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:35 (nine years ago)

i'm a sucker for female fronted indie pop that sort of sounds like Belle and Sebastian.

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:41 (nine years ago)

i just read the Lush thread, visa issues. i was wondering why they aren't on this youtube stream.

Bee OK, Saturday, 16 April 2016 23:55 (nine years ago)

it does look like Guns and Roses will be on tonight as well, they have it listed as "Special Performance."

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 00:02 (nine years ago)

they are replaying the Foals from yesterday.

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 00:17 (nine years ago)

Rhye vs Run the Jewels

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 00:55 (nine years ago)

I don't know who the white boys on one of the streams is right now but they're pretty good on that revenge of the nerds violin. the devil went down to berkley.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 April 2016 01:46 (nine years ago)

Deerhunter

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 01:54 (nine years ago)

time for that Pavement fix or Courtney Barnett

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:05 (nine years ago)

If you can trust the viewer numbers on YouTube, Courtney Barnett has twice as many viewers as Pavement. Matoma was fun, but I feel too old to have that opinion.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:43 (nine years ago)

uh are we talking about the pavement? i didn't even know they were playing...where are they streaming?

k3vin k., Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:46 (nine years ago)

no Pavement tonight

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:55 (nine years ago)

Oh, actually couldn't tell you if this band is Pavement or not since i've never listened to them, but they're white guys with guitars, and Bee said either Pavement or Courtney so I assumed.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:56 (nine years ago)

i just googled pavement coachella and i see nothing about them playing, what are you talking about?

k3vin k., Sunday, 17 April 2016 02:57 (nine years ago)

i'm not sure if I'd rather see Vince Staples perform his music live or just watch him answer questions for an hour.

alpine static, Sunday, 17 April 2016 05:06 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 05:16 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 05:25 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 06:34 (nine years ago)

I do like this song better than the others. she's obviously talented and an engaging/energetic performer. i just don't hear much to like in the actual songs, and i don't particularly like her voice.

alpine static, Sunday, 17 April 2016 06:36 (nine years ago)

to me, she seems like a Saturday Night Live character come to life

alpine static, Sunday, 17 April 2016 06:37 (nine years ago)

stay in there, she is so good she might win you over

Bee OK, Sunday, 17 April 2016 06:39 (nine years ago)
