So, what's your AOTY 2016?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 5 January 2016 05:01 (nine years ago)

Wild Nothing - Reichpop

The last time I heard from them they sounded like jangle rock band. This one is the first track from the new album and it sounds closer to afro-pop (maybe it's just the polyrhythms), haven't heard anything else from this album yet. So far, so good.

Charlie Hilton - 100 Million
This was technically released online a few weeks ago but the album drops this month so I'm considering it a 2016 release. She's a former member of band Blouse, song features Mac DeMarco on guitar and vocals and was produced by Woods' Jarvis Taveniere... it sounds exactly like you imagine it sounds considering the people involved. I'm getting a VU's Loaded vibe from this song, which means I love it.

I suppose I'll be updating on a spotify playlist anything that I find interesting and purge every now and then like last year: https://open.spotify.com/user/moteldemoka/playlist/7IUyyJbFUQ9r8kxQar0Cwr

Maybe you're already familiar with those but this is mostly based on the neo-classical stuff:

Otto A. Totland
Lubomyr Melnyk
Takeshi Nishimoto

Although if you were only looking for 2016 stuff in that vein, I got nothing

Kidnap Kid - Birds That Fly

is nice. Don't want to describe it in case god forbid I use the wrong house sub-genre, but it's one of his more straightforwardly house tracks (compared to the more sui generis things he was doing a few years back that I like even more).

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 30 January 2016 18:27 (nine years ago)

Thanks for the suggestions.

I have (and like) the recent(ish) Otto A. Totland album. I like Melnyk - but haven't heard the most recent one (I thought someone might buy it me for Xmas and then forgot about it). Takeshi Nishimoto seems to be in the "sounds nice; need to stop buying stuff like this" category. I've a curious number of Colleen albums but haven't kept up.

Not sure about Whitney though if anyone wants an Oxford meet up where we drink beer and throw axes/smoke bombs, that'd be cool.

Prince Rama: Xtreme Now

I have never heard about them before, but this album is ridiculously good, a very strange and catchy mixture of styles - electro-pop, psych, even new age sometimes. So far clearly my favourite album in 2016.

There are only 4 tracks on Spotify so far, the album comes on 4 March: http://www.stereogum.com/1861912/stream-prince-rama-xtreme-now-stereogum-premiere/mp3s/

PJ Harvey - The Wheel

pitchforkian at best (cryptosicko), Monday, 29 February 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

I used to listen to so many albums, maybe 100 per year... nowadays I don't have enough time or the right mood to sit down and listen.

It's a brief list but here's the list of albums I've loved in the past two months, not enough for a top 10 and technically KING is a compilation, Anna Homler a reissue from 1985 and Livanskiy an EP...

Anna Homler & Steve Moshier - Breadwoman & Other Tales
Animal Collective - Painting With
Anderson Paak - Malibu
Prins Thomas - Principe del Norte
KING - We are King
Kedr Livanskiy - January Sun
Wacław Zimpel - Lines
Good WIllsmith - Things Our Bodies Used to Have
David Bowie - Blackstar

Some ilxors might enjoy my albums list far better than my songs list, I usually go for more "world creating" experiments in albums and easy stuff on singles.

(Please note that due to the snowballing onerousness of trying to backtrack and update the entire thread stem to stern, I'm only updating entries made since March 1 to this particular playlist. I'll do a clean sweep at the end of the year to mop up anything that got added to catalogue later. If there's a track that you think really needs immediate inclusion, bring it back up again onthread and it'll get added in the next month of housekeeping.)

New Melanie De Biasio is amazing - Lynch noir meets In a Silent Way. Oh and for those who want to know more, she's a Belgian jazz singer. Previous album, No Deal, is well worth checking out. Was thinking of starting a thread.

maybe it's just an effect of seeing chris abrahams on calzino's list, but there is a definite the necks-ishness to the melanie de biasio record on first listen

Enjoying this for now. Mostly ambient, often disjunctive, electronic music with jazzy bits. At times not far from Cornelius. I don't listen to too much music like this, so I don't think I have the right category slots or "sounds like artist x" to describe it.

Not so surprisingly the previous list is part of the radio show I'm running. Just uploaded this 'mid-year roundup' show on mixcloud (meaning I can take a summer break): https://www.mixcloud.com/Sterrenplaten/sterrenplaten-24-juni-2016-mid-year-roundup-2016

Thanks to Fat Cat's modern classical offshoot '130701' we had the chance to play a song from Ian William Craig's great 'Centres' and even an unreleased 2005 song of Set Fire To Flames, from the upcoming Eleven Into Fifteen compilation.

Also, show is in Dutch.

I've missed that Grubbs had a new one out. What's it like?

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 23 July 2016 21:28 (nine years ago)

five tracks, only one brief track with vocals.. the rest is sort of like Grubbs' circular/spidery/repeating riffing/arpeggios, with loose and nimble drumming (free jazz-like, breezy, secondary to the more pronounced guitar patterns) -- basically Grubbs' guitar and drums (Eli Keszler) with subtle (synthesizer, added afterwards) flourishes/augmentation. Drag City doesn't charge for shipping within the US (for CD), not bad.

BONAFIDE CLASSICS:
Radiohead - A Moon Shaped Pool
Autechre - Elseq 1-5

iLe - iLevitable

This is PG13 (Ileana Cabra) from Calle 13, the younger sister. She's been singing on their albums since the beginning. I'd be curious to hear other people's impressions but I don't think I have anything to say to entice people to listen. Wish I knew Spanish. Will be saying that on my deathbed.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:03 (nine years ago)

Definitely not reggaeton.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

Xpost: wait rudi you don't speak spanish!? I assumed you did because you're a big fan of latin music!

ILE sounds really good! Closest popular comparison I can think of is Natalia Lafourcade. there's some really nice instrumentation in some of those songs.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:18 (nine years ago)

I don't. So pathetic. All these years of listening to so much music in Spanish (mostly salsa though) and so little has sunk in.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:31 (nine years ago)

there's some really nice instrumentation in some of those songs.

I feel that the instrumentation tends to fall short most of the time. It's polished, but somehow lacking. I still like the album but I'm a but ambivalent about it. I think her vocals and songwriting are the strongest parts.

_Rudipherous_, Sunday, 7 August 2016 18:55 (nine years ago)

Vocals are somewhat unique from what is normally used in the genre. They're the definite highlight of course, just pointing out some of the instrumentation sounded good on first listen hahaha but yes there's nothing particularly outstanding in that matter.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 8 August 2016 17:22 (nine years ago)

I hope you at least have learned how to dance salsa! I like the genre but it has never made sense to me as home listening. You need to listen to it while moving.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 8 August 2016 17:24 (nine years ago)

Oh yeah, learning to salsa is what got me started listening to salsa. I am not dancing these days due to chronic health problems which I'm still trying to resolve. I think it's fine as home listening, especially classic salsa, though I mostly listen in the car these days. Good driving music.

Lemon Demon - Spirit Phone

King - We Are King
Oranssi Pazuzu - Värähtelijä

very, very good

Esperanza Spalding - Emily's D+Evolution
Working For A Nuclear Free City - What Do People Do All Day?
Saqqara Mastabas - Libras
Xenia Rubinos - Black Stars
Teleman - Brilliant Sanity
Kel Valhaal - New Introductory Lectures On Transcendental Qabala

more or less in that order, but there's loads bubbling under, probably some I've forgotten, and plenty coming to blast the above asunder

I should put in a good word for Bobby Kapp/Matthew Shipp's Cactus. At the very least, I keep returning to it.

(I don't feel that strongly about any new albums this year. Even Ilevitable, which has some truly great tracks, slumps in the middle for me. Every album I've listened to and liked still bugs me a little, or is consistent but not special enough, like the Miramar album.)

have been enjoying the kelsey lu album 'church' lately. it's vocals + cello + pedals, so i guess colleen would be the easy comparison to make. it has that same mix of airiness and tension, but there's more of an emphasis on vocal expression rather than hypnotic rhythms.

Baby Queens' debut album came out yesterday, and it is pretty good. They're a five-piece R&B group produced by Cian Ciaran from Super Furry Animals. The first single, "Red Light", came out a few years ago; it's definitely one of the best tracks on the album, but there's a lot of other good stuff on here. I think they're the most promising group Cian has worked with; the lead vocalist, Vanity, has a great voice, and she sounds amazing on "Had My Heart."

Also really enjoying The Pattern Forms. I seem to like everything Jon Brooks touches. The Hintermass LP from earlier this year is also really good and seems to have been lost under the pile of great releases this year. Also a Jon Brooks project.

Listening to the play list and something stood out. Who is this? Euglossine. Oh, okay. Who is this?

_Rudipherous_, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 16:28 (eight years ago)

euglossine is some vaporwave-ish jazz fusion-ish guy that i'm a fan of. don't know much about him, don't have any real reference points for his style.

I've been oddly nonplussed this year, music wise. Loads of great music, no question, but blown away I have been not. Maybe it just wasn't that kind of year. But if I had to pick my one favorite piece of music this year, it is this. Which isn't 'blown away' stuff either, but it is just so achingly gorgeous:

Xpost: I love Matt Elliott's style but I'm never in the mood to actually listen to his music. Too depressing - not saying that's a bad quality to have - and I guess I'm not completely burned out for it.

Moka, Wednesday, 7 December 2016 21:45 (eight years ago)

I've never experienced his music as depressing. Intense, melancholy, painful: yes. But never depressing. Different strokes I suppose.

Without actually checking and just top of my head the 20 albums I remember listening to the ost in 2016:

Mmm asi sin ver y sin ranking estarian en el top 20 estarian

Shura
Nicolas Jaar
Noname
Radiohead
Andy Shauf
KING
Anderson Paak
Prins Thomas
Cavern of Antimatter
A TRIBE CALLED QUEST
Weyes Blood
Western Skies Motel
Carla Dal Forno
Bowie
Badbadnotgood
Xenia Rubinos
Avalanches
Kaytranada
Thee Oh Sees
Cullen Omori

But I could see half of these as disposable in the sense that I know I wont be listening to them much again safe from a couple of songs... I feel like I'm missing many albums that I didn't really listen that often but left a mark... probably listened around 20 albums per month so need to check out my actual lists when I get home.

i've just been listening to more eps lately myself. when i was younger eps seemed like a niche format for tracks that weren't good enough to put on an album proper, but lately there's some perception that music doesn't need to be either three or 45 minutes to be worth listening to.

i've just been lumping them in with albums this year, though. something like gorguts' "pleiades dust"- so it's 33 minutes and, what, an album is 35? not worth differentiating.
