Wanted to start a new rolling footwork and juke-related thread as the title of the one we've been using for years doesn't really reflect what's happening so much any more.
Figured it would be nice to open this out to some of the more esoteric dance styles that have been emerging around the world too, seeing as many of them seem to share that broken / cut-up / / hard / fast / unpredictable rhythmic style.
So take this thread as you will - if it fits or if it don't, post up your tracks.
― canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 15 January 2016 12:25 (nine years ago)
should footwork really be chucked in with the others? im not sure anyone making chaabi cares about footwork.
― StillAdvance, Friday, 15 January 2016 12:29 (nine years ago)
I'm really interested in this kind of crossover trend of sampling tiny snatches of African rhythms in this way. Posted this DJ Paypal track on the old thread:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wgtfx8RttME
Which shares a similar vibe to this from Italian producer, Clap! Clap! (who is doing a show in the UK with Omar Souleyman in March)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pp4vSJyVoGk
And also this from the Lisbon producer Nigga Fox, who along with Marfox has been spearheading their own Cargaa-style, releasing tracks on Warp and footwork label Lit City Trax.
― canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 15 January 2016 12:38 (nine years ago)
xp yeah, I'm not trying to lump them in with each other, it's just that electro chaabi etc won't really get discussed on other dance-related threads.
― canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 15 January 2016 12:39 (nine years ago)
well that's a good start. sorry for the repost - here's the Nigga Fox track:

ok whatever! i love electro chaabi, at least the cairo liberation front mixes i have, so would welcome any tips for more like that.
― StillAdvance, Friday, 15 January 2016 12:44 (nine years ago)
I take it you've heard the EEK x Islam Chipsy stuff? Not strictly electro chaabi, it's its own thing. Two drummers and an absolutely incredible synth wiz making awesome heart-pounding stuff
― canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 15 January 2016 12:49 (nine years ago)
its amazing. the live vids on youtube are also incredible. i wanted to buy it but trying to save at the mo.

I've been toying with the idea of buying up a bunch of footwork (and related) vinyl online and teaching myself how to DJ properly... Is this a wise choice? All my mixes are kind of pre-prepared digital affairs rather than on the fly mixes. Footwork is still relatively niche where I live, but the appetite for booming bass has always been very high.

This Ash Koosha record is interesting. Sometimes Arca-ish, sometimes more like a 2016 take on IDM. Very rhythmic but not especially functional (seems like he doesn't like kick drums much?), although there are a couple tracks I could hear working in a mix. It's growing on me.

DJ Chap: https://discospeligrosa.bandcamp.com/album/drum-pakk-1Teklife crew member does something like favela meets footwork. Mostly just drum tracks, but short lengths so you can groove to them and move on
Machine Girl: https://machinegirl.bandcamp.com/album/machine-girl-vs-machine-girlEP from late last year. Not straight footwork by a any means, lots of jungle and breakbeat in there too. But I like artists that f with the formula

i was surprised that i wasn't much into the dj earl album because in general i really like his production and dj'ing (particularly the jungle / dnb influence he brings)

It feels really awkward for me arguing this with a chicagoan, and my comment that dj nate invented bop was meant tongue in cheek, but the flexx washington mixtape came out in august, and ballin came out in september, no?

I'm sure most rap producers in Chicago have dabbled in footwork/juke, but out of the ones that really made their name on it, I can't think of any others (besides DJ Nate) who abandoned it?

some of them used to do it primarily but i'm sure veering to rap was specifically bc they hadn't made their names as dance producers
im not saying the culture is gone at all, i know ppl who still do it, just that the rap gold rush def shifted some of the zeitgeist away for awhile

But whatever, hoping for the best for him.
