ILM 2015 Tracks Poll Thread of Ballots, Statistics and Community-wide Anomie

Message Bookmarked

Here we go!

Full Results

Non-self-explanatory stats:
Enthusiasm: Average points per ballot, divided by the max it could have (50).
Popularity: The Spotify Popularity score for the track, if it's on Spotify.
Hotttnesss: This is an EchoNest thing. Not really sure what it means.
Critical Consensus: How well the track did on other publications' EOY lists. 0 means it didn't feature anywhere, 1 means it was #1 on every list.

Aggregated Artist Results

Some basic stats combining all tracks by a single artist (not counting featured artists). If a voter voted for more than one track by an artist, only the top track is counted.

Genre Results

For every genre in Glenn's big map of the universe that had at least 10 tracks with at least one vote, I compiled a top 10 list. Not all the genre assignments make sense, but hey. I also tried to work out genre-subgenre relationships, so votes for "indie r&b" also count towards "r&b".

Voter Statistics

Hivemind score: this is the average points total for the tracks on your ballot; how your ballot was ordered doesn't change the score.
Fuxxor Quotient: the proportion of tracks on your ballot that were in Pitchfork's top 100.
Antifuxxor Ratio: Hivemind divided by Fuxxor Quotient. A high ratio means your taste is much closer to that of ILM than to that of Pitchfork. A score of infinity means you're awesome.
Populism: the average Spotify popularity of the tracks on your ballot that are also on Spotify.
Loneliness: the proportion of your tracks that nobody else voted for. This year's loneliest voter is...not a surprise.
Blood Sausage Index: The average points total for tracks that didn't appear on a collection of other EOY lists. Essentially, whether you love songs that nobody outside of ILM cares or knows about.
Hotttnesss: see above; how hottt you are, basically
Top neighbour: essentially the voter whose ballot intersects most with yours.
Top genre: the genre you gave the most points to, according to Glenn's automagically generated genres.
You should probably read: The non-ILM EOY tracks list that intersects most with yours.

Post your ballots, discourses, paraphenalia, etc below.

emil.y, Thursday, 21 January 2016 22:34 (nine years ago)

Mixed ballot; bold didn't place.

Weighted
01 Kiss Daniel - Good Time #134

Maliibu N Helene - Figure 8 #248
Miguel - Coffee #4
Rush - Attention #362
Tekno - Duro #216

5/25; first time I haven't been the sole voter for something, though. Most annoyed about forgetting about Destra's "Lucy" (came out so early in Jan!); think my vote would have pushed it into the 70s :/ Since I was travelling for a month or so and threw a ballot together at the last minute, I tried to eliminate crossover between albums & singles to save time cutting things down.

ciderpress, Thursday, 21 January 2016 22:36 (nine years ago)

I don't generally expect that many of my selections will place, but the non-placer I was most surprised by was ANOHNI - as well as being amazing it also stands out by sounding completely unlike the rest of the competition. Thought it was well-received on ILM too.

My track ballot (weighted). Bold did not place:

Charlie Puth with Meghan Trainor - Marvin Gaye

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:12 (nine years ago)

Ooh, I'm getting better at this.
#101/137 Hivemind, #108/137 Fuxxor Q, #36/137 Antifuxxor, #99/137 Populism, and #37/137 Loneliness, #48/137 Blood Sausage, #11/137 Hotttnesss!

djmartian and I are mutual closest neighbors, in our land of Euro-RYM listers

Per the convention of bold didn't place, my mixed ballot:

TRACKS (mixed)

1. Shura - White Light
2. Absofacto - Dissolve
3. Soap&Skin - Mawal Jamar
4. Jennie Abrahamson - Wolf
5. Susanne Sundfør – Accelerate
6. Saad Lamjarred – LM3ALLEM
7. Rangleklods - Lost U
8. Makthaverskan – Witness
9. Ekkah - Last Chance to Dance
10. Soko - Who Wears the Pants??

Algiers - Blood
Chairlift - Ch-Ching
CHVRCHES - Clearest Blue
Emilie Nicolas - Fail
Empress Of - How Do You Do It

Grimes - Realiti (Demo)
Holly Herndon – Interference
LA Priest - Learning to Love
Laura Groves - Dream Story
Susanne Sundfør - Delirious
The Knocks ft. Alex Newell - Collect My Love
V V Brown - Flatline

I was evidently the only voter for Absofacto - "Dissolve", Soap&Skin - "Mawal Jamar", Soko - "Who Wears the Pants??", Goldroom ft. George Maple – "Embrace", The Knocks ft. Alex Newell - "Collect My Love", and V V Brown - "Flatline", and this both saddens me, and gives me a vague sense of smug superiority.

honestly don't understand people who don't think like this

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:45 (nine years ago)

idk maybe it's because you think the best albums have the best songs on them? idgi. which list gets priority over which list?

u kno how that shd go (Will M.), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:46 (nine years ago)

"here are the best albums without any good tracks on them" vs "here are the best tracks on bad albums"?

u kno how that shd go (Will M.), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)

i don't go out of my way to avoid it, but i ended up w/ just 5 of my tracks being from albums i voted for, mainly because i focus on proper charting singles etc

some dude, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)

Will OTM.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)

well, i want to rep as much music by as many artists as possible, ideally, given how many there were making amazing music in any given year, and doubling up reduces that

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:47 (nine years ago)

Lots of people just aren't singles/tracks oriented, so the songs on their face lps are the ones they want to vote for. Seems like the wrong way to do things, sure, but I'm partly guilty of it myself.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:48 (nine years ago)

you're essentially describing cross-list vote splitting with yourself!

(xp)

u kno how that shd go (Will M.), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:49 (nine years ago)

"here are the best albums without any good tracks on them"

well...if you vote for an album people will assume you love most of the tracks...and don't need to be told again

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:50 (nine years ago)

personally I feel like its a bit of a waste of time, eg the Susanne Sundfor album is full of great tracks but it's even better taken together as a statement of intent as an "album" and if I tell you it's a great album I don't need to spell out that it consists of ten great tracks

boxedjoy, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:50 (nine years ago)

i mean, i hope you're really looking fwd to next week's roll-out which will reprise half the artists in this week's roll-out

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:50 (nine years ago)

Plus even more schmindie!

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:51 (nine years ago)

can we do an EP list in 2016? I feel like I heard a lot of really good EPs that worked as a collection of songs that I didn't necessarily think of as "singles" or "tracks"

boxedjoy, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:51 (nine years ago)

Hell yes! So many phenom EPs last year.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:52 (nine years ago)

@lex i mean, yeah there will be a lot of crossover, but if there's no "rule" about it, then you're only making your own votes less likely to place

u kno how that shd go (Will M.), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:54 (nine years ago)

like I totally ignored Annie, Laura Groves, Kaledia, The Japanese House, Dej Loaf and Sevyn Streeter because I thought of their releases as not singles but didn't consider that they wouldn't be at all possible options for albums votes

boxedjoy, Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:56 (nine years ago)

the honey cocaine ep is one of the only eps i've ever considered voting for as an album (but voted for "sundae" instead to no avail)

and yeah in general eps are becoming more of a thing

cher guevara (lex pretend), Thursday, 21 January 2016 23:59 (nine years ago)

I just feel like having no cross over between album and track ballots would be completely dishonest

The point of these polls IMO is not to show off how diverse my listening is but to show off what i really like listening to

can we do an EP list in 2016? I feel like I heard a lot of really good EPs that worked as a collection of songs that I didn't necessarily think of as "singles" or "tracks"

Hell yes! So many phenom EPs last year.

co-sign, this is a good idea. Pazz & Jop had an EPs poll from '81 to '94 and i think we're totally back at the point where there are enough good EPs being made every year that it'd be worth doing.

HYPERLINK TO RAP GENIUS (BradNelson), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:07 (nine years ago)

speaking to the lex's album vs. singles concerns up thread: what constitutes a strong single in my mind is different than what constitutes a continuous album. For a single, I was condensed and overwhelming emotion that I can unleash in case of emergency; with an album i need sequencing and diversity and continuous answering of the "what's next?" question. I don't know that saying albums are more difficult/more inherently meaningful than singles is right... they're different goals. It's like comparing raising a child or starting a business; there's different levels of commitment and skills at play but they both take work and artistry.
Secondarily, there's so much music out there that if I allowed overlap of my album list to my singles, I would lose the ability to look at songs that really really impacted me (hit the quan or que suenen los tambores or kime ne or landmarks for examples) without context. I love getting blindsided by an isolated song and being caught up without any sense of background or oeuvre. It's not the ONLY way I can fully embrace a single song but it's certainly one of the more exhilarating.

ulysses, Friday, 22 January 2016 16:22 (nine years ago)

this is all completely insane to me but fair enough

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a truck (imago), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:23 (nine years ago)

There is a simple solution to this:

1. list your top X songs that impacted you in isolation; BOOM there is your tracks ballot
2. list your top x albums that impacted you as discrete musical units; BOOM there is your albums ballot
3. if there's any overlap, shrug and send that shit in anyway

its subtle brume (DJP), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:28 (nine years ago)

like, limiting myself to one slot per artist per ballot felt like an onerous sacrifice, limiting myself to one slot per artist in total would have been completely unthinkable

i don't need voting purity to appreciate individual songs more but then our listening habits are possibly very different

i just vote for my favourite tracks and my favourite albums. i dispute lex's claim that this approach produces similar results in the two polls any more than keeping the two separate would, at least assuming we have diverse tastes

it is possible to both listen to albums as albums and also pick out individual songs and listen to them as songs

dan otm basically

Oneohtrix Point Never - Sticky Drama
David Bowie - Blackstar

Aphex Twin - diskhat1
Grimes - Realiti (Demo)
Destroyer - Times Square
Kendrick Lamar - Wesley’s Theory
Lana Del Rey - Terrance Loves You

Chelsea Wolfe - Carrion Flowers

silverfish, Friday, 22 January 2016 16:36 (nine years ago)

I had 4 Kendrick songs on my tracks ballot because I listened to them a ton independently of the album; I ranked them in the order of frequency that I listened to them. There was no way any of them were not going to be on my ballot; in fact, if I was doing it over I would probably put a few more Kendrick songs on it because I spent a lot of time popping into that album in random spots and grooving on isolated songs, almost as much as I did playing it front to back. (Aside from possibly the Marriages album, nothing else I listened to this past year came close to receiving the same number of spins.) Dumping those tracks in the name of showing off my breadth and diversity of taste would not be a true representation of the music I spent the last year digging and it always baffles me when I see people chime in during the tracks rollout with "oh I love this song, heard it so many times, played it constantly, I took it off my ballot so I could include this K-pop song I found out about last week"

its subtle brume (DJP), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:38 (nine years ago)

I also stand by your top 4 xp

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a truck (imago), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:39 (nine years ago)

I almost don't listen to tracks outside of the context of an album so the point is kinda moot as far as I'm concerned, my favorite tracks are most likely on my favorite albums (also I didn't nominate any of my favorite tracks anyway, as I needed the noms for my albums, so I ended up voting for what others had nominated, which obviously is not going to be very representative of my own favs)

this might get to the heart of it because that's not a simple solution! putting tracks in numerical order stops making sense to me after about three or four; thereafter i feel i'm comparing so many different things as to make it nonsensical. "big pop hit that sounded amazing at parties" vs "country ballad me and my bf both loved" vs "10 min dance instrumental that is compositionally incomparable to a pop song but that i loved for different reasons" vs "summer jam" vs "winter headphones song", it feels arbitrary

so excising album artists from my tracks ballot is not being dishonest or pretentious any more than any reason for cutting any other song is, more convenient and a way to make the exercise more fun/less predictable for myself

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:51 (nine years ago)

with that approach though lex you're effectively ruling out the artists who made the best albums from the tracks poll

...which feels counter-intuitive. for, let's say, dawn richard not to have representation in the tracks 77 feels plain wrong, in fact

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a truck (imago), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:55 (nine years ago)

I had no overlap w/ my singles and albums lists. Album tracks didn't really function as good singles for me this year

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:57 (nine years ago)

the only dawn tracks i considered voting for were "james dean" and "dance" bc they weren't on the album. my votes for all her amazing tracks were contained in my vote for her amazing album

tbh in terms of listening i usually end up listening in ep-length chunks? i mean listening to An Album All The Way Through is great and all if it merits it, but one's listening time doesn't always come in album-length sizes

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:59 (nine years ago)

how i do my ballot:

Whack the whole list into Excel
Go down the list, putting a cross in the right hand column of every song I know or recognise
Sort these into known/not known
Go through these and give each mark out of 9: 9 being undroppable, 1 being... well I don't bother with those.
I end up with a longest of tracks ranked between 9 and 6, which I then attempt to rank in order.
I think about it in these turns: Would I rather hear the track after this one on the list, or this one.
Bit of chopping and changing and I'm done.

That's probably more or less what everyone does.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 22 January 2016 16:59 (nine years ago)

also my albums was kind of boring and it seemed depressing to cut away their best parts

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:00 (nine years ago)

I like the Kendrick album and I voted for it, but King Kunta is the clear standout that I was putting on playlists for myself and others over the year.

canoon fooder (dog latin), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:00 (nine years ago)

There is a simple solution to this:

1. list your top X songs that impacted you in isolation; BOOM there is your tracks ballot
2. list your top x albums that impacted you as discrete musical units; BOOM there is your albums ballot
3. if there's any overlap, shrug and send that shit in anyway

yes this is what i did

i appreciate others' push for diversity in their lists to give support to the widest range of artists possible but i also want to be honest about what i actually listened to/dug the most, that said there were a few last minute discoveries i had from the nominations list that i snuck in and maybe in a week or two will regret but who cares really

Ys Man a.k.a. Have One on G (geoffreyess), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:18 (nine years ago)

lex / dan / lj: you're presenting it like it's a problem that I haven't solved. I'm perfectly happy with my methodology; it just doesn't jibe with the way you do it, which is fine.
important again as always imo to suggest that we maybe not take ourselves too seriously when discussing the intricacies of tabulating deep meaningful opinions from 130 or so music nerds. I mean _I'm_ listening of course, and the conversation is certainly worthwhile but suggesting there's a platonic "right way" to do it or to bemoan the lack of inclusion of an artist that we're all listening to already in our slambook is where you start to lose me.

ulysses, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:19 (nine years ago)

Dumping those tracks in the name of showing off my breadth and diversity of taste would not be a true representation of the music I spent the last year digging and it always baffles me when I see people chime in during the tracks rollout with "oh I love this song, heard it so many times, played it constantly, I took it off my ballot so I could include this K-pop song I found out about last week"

i don't think you're necessarily singling me out here but I don't stock with diversity for the sake of diversity; I just find that different songs (and styles of songs) represent different moments in my year that I'd like to celebrate by shouting them out at year's end. Singles also tend to have concentrated impact for me and wear out after a month or two and then need replenishing with a few months off, where albums don't necessarily... so "I found this k-pop song last week" can be equally meaningful if said song really swept me off my feet.

ulysses, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:23 (nine years ago)

do people have diverse lists to 'give support to the widest range of artists possible' (sorry to single out this quote, no better way to put it i think) or just because they just like diversity, seems like the latter?

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:27 (nine years ago)

ulysses, Friday, 22 January 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

i guess you could think about it that way, maybe i'll give it a try

rap is dad (it's a boy!), Friday, 22 January 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

i stand with lex in this debate. when i have a list of 50-something tracks i need to cut to 25 and i'm finding arbitrary reasons to drop tracks, 'i already voted for this track along with every other track on the album in my albums list' is a pretty good reason. i also don't really quantify exactly how much i like most of the tracks i love throughout the year, i either have a good experience with a track and return to it repeatedly, or i don't. so it's not like i'm dropping 10/10's from my list and keeping 8/10's in favor of diversity.

YES exactly!!!

and quantifying the goodness of the time i had between a deep cut (or even single) off a beloved album, and like a club track or stand-alone pop single, doesn't make sense to me

cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, 22 January 2016 18:33 (nine years ago)

> do people have diverse lists to 'give support to the widest range of artists possible' ... or just because they just like diversity

I made made a preliminary list to serve as a time capsule of this year in my listening, then went through everything nominated by a half dozen ILMers with sympatico tastes, and sampled maybe 40% of the Spotify list. Guilty pleasure Fleur East, and a "new Grace Jones", V V Brown, slipped in this way (wish someone had nominated the album Glitch). Then its just prune till I'm pretty sure everything left will stand up to repeated listens, and still sparks pleasure when I hear it's opening.

As for albums, I've got 65 (well some are EPs) in the library and have sampled perhaps 100 others. Its enough to be fairly sure of my top 30 without much effort. Cut 5 that I know won't appeal to anybody else and I'm done. I'd love to have the time to delve further in that enormous Spotify list, but I suspect I'll have my blind spots filled in by the poll results and the ballots from ILMers on the same wavelength.

Seriously though for a minute people, I think what actually examining the individual ballots demonstrates is that all the tribalistic narc of some dude bs is unwarranted - people who voted for your most hated also voted for your fave, the stuff you can't fathom anyone in the world liking happily sits alongside the stuff that feels like it was created especially for you.

So maybe the answer is that your own private idiosyncratic rules for good and bad aren't really that important or even meaningful beyond yrself.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2016 00:44 (nine years ago)

But in all seriousness 1975 is bad for your ears.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 January 2016 00:47 (nine years ago)

The 1975 are one of those bands where you might be initially repulsed beyond belief (I was) but if you actually try to engage with them, like even a little bit, you'll end up finding something nice to say about them, which is more than can be said about some bands. This is what is known as Tim F1nney Stockholm Syndrome tho so pinch of salt ;)

sounding like a silly Iain Banks on a truck (imago), Saturday, 23 January 2016 00:50 (nine years ago)

Obv it's a lot just that I like them but I also think the majority of haters here who think this is the worst band ever have a very confined notion of what the band is premised on the songs in this year's poll and maybe like "Girls" and "Sex" and "Chocolate", whereas if they listened to "Me" or "fallingforyou" or "Undo" or "Intro/Set 3" or "Haunt//Bed" or "Menswear" would be very surprised.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2016 00:53 (nine years ago)

And if you get into the band through the latter sort of material it totally shapes and changes the way you perceive of a song like "Love Me".

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2016 00:53 (nine years ago)

Hey hey I never said they were the worst band ever, just the worst band in this poll. I can think of worst.

Exactly the kind of otherwise-overlooked classic that I expect to discover in the ILX tracks poll when we're not succumbing to millenial schmindie-ism or doubling/tripling up on pet albums. But thats in me as much as anybody, least of all for forgetting to nominate it.

hoping the votes for various angel haze and abra trax here bode well for the albums poll

― cher guevara (lex pretend), Friday, January 22, 2016 12:04 PM (Yesterday)

Yeah, I went with your tactic of not voting for songs off the albums I was voting for, so I would be surprised (and basically burn the entire message board down) if Angel Haze doesn't make albums. I have mixed feelings about the varying tactics - it felt quite refreshing this year but I think it is because my top five make sense as coherent units rather than a bunch of standout songs put together. Though actually my #2 might have been too tempting if they hadn't released the standouts in 2014.

emil.y, Saturday, 23 January 2016 03:34 (nine years ago)

Adore both the Abra album and the Angel Haze mixtape but both feel like releases it would feel very odd to pull individual songs out of, both are so coherent full statements or at least I experience them that way.

Tim F, Saturday, 23 January 2016 03:42 (nine years ago)

I don't generally expect that many of my selections will place, but the non-placer I was most surprised by was ANOHNI - as well as being amazing it also stands out by sounding completely unlike the rest of the competition. Thought it was well-received on ILM too.

This was my #1 (after being my #4 and realizing after tabulation that my top three weren't nominated) and would chalk it up to the song being released really late in the year, early Dec. iirc.

didn't allot enough time to really listen to ANOHNI when I was voting. looking forward to the album

Dan S, Saturday, 23 January 2016 07:47 (nine years ago)

I think it is because my top five make sense as coherent units rather than a bunch of standout songs put together.

TY for the Spook School etc ... went down a rabbit hole of "Burn Masculinity", Martha, twowhitecranes blog posts etc from this. I chickened out from putting i hate sex / G.L.O.S.S. & regional DIY on my singles list after DJing on NYE and deciding on a dancefloor focus as winnowing tool, eh.

I don't understand a world in which the 1975 is considered worse than Sufjan Stevens.

Oh, that's awesome. I always assume my indie/DIY votes are basically thrown away and of no interest to ilx0rs, but use EoY lists as a tool to remind myself what I actually liked in the past year, so would be dishonest to exclude them.

Best find I got from this poll:

Daphne & Celeste - You and I Alone

Skimming on individual polls to see if I find something I like (I have found many songs I've liked, actually). But this is so good. It seems many of you voted for it and I hadn't seen it anywhere. Any threads you'd recommend where you discuss this sort of music throughout the year?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 January 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

You And I Alone is essentially a Max Tundra song. You'd find him on places like the rolling time travel thread.

Other good 2015 Norwegian pop we neglected to nominate: Ane Brun - Shape of a Heart, Röyksopp - I Had This Thing, Aurora - Running With The Wolves, Farao - Bodies, Karin Park & Pandora Drive - Hurricane, Kate Havnevik - Falling. All of which arguably better than some of the Europop that placed. But we already had enough lilly white Geirbait, I guess.

I was the second loneliest ilxor with a full ballot and flying solo on the following (country and Youtube plays in brackets):

Vremya I Steklo - Imya 505 (UKR, 57.5m): Addictive Ukrainian house-pop with a ridiculously simple and effective hook.

https://youtu.be/n3Go8ub9a1k

Anna Sedokova - Poka Milii (UKR, 3.6m): In a very similar vein. Sedokova hasn't recorded much of interest since leaving the Menudo-style conveyor belt of VIA Gra ten years ago but this was an excellent return to form.

https://youtu.be/QmSvEaiaxBM

Angela Hunte & Machel Montano - Party Done (T&T, 2.5m): Montano is horrendously over-rated and over-garlanded as a solo artist but Hunte kills this and Machel provides adequate support. Soca single of the year and one of the best Trini videos in recent memory.

https://youtu.be/eHr8zZfrU_Y

Nyusha - Gde Ti, Tam Ya (RUS, 19.3m): Tempting to argue that Anna Shurochkina is working a formula, given that this sounds almost exactly like half the songs on her last album, but it's a heck of a formula. Thumping electro-pop with vaguely Eastern trappings.

https://youtu.be/IwpDzJE4fc8

Dasha Charusha ft Skriptonit - Kosmos (RUS/KAZ, 0.2m): The original version of Kosmos is a slight but pretty ballad - Kazakh rapper Skriptonit transforms it into something much more powerful.

https://youtu.be/xKoSAgDrYsE

Igor Krid - Nevesta (RUS, 21.4m): Russia's answer to Justin Timberlake with an effortlessly charming song about getting hitched.

https://youtu.be/Jg3gwyoUrhE

DKMD - Sacrificio (CAN / ITA, 0.007m): On Cologne's Giallo Disco records and squarely in step with the aesthetic of the name. An upscale version of the Italo-horror-influenced witch house stuff knocking about.

https://youtu.be/udcujCjOebk

Delta Goodrem - Wings (AUS, 1.7m): Goodrem was always fairly good at emotive low-key piano pop but this is a huge, euphoric and much better than could ever have been expected. idk why it wasn't more of a hit.

https://youtu.be/z1A2Ow7sGo0

Loose Cannon - Sick Jab (GRD, 0.006m): Relentlessly intense, mildly terrifying Grenadan party music.

https://youtu.be/NGaQvOhrWwk

Tina Karol - Sdat'sya Ti Vsegda Uspeesh' (UKR, 1.2m): OTT power ballad that Karol manages against the odds to steer into something genuinely affecting.

https://youtu.be/kG46IzgdB0Y

Elena ft. Danny Mazo - Senor Loco (ROM / COL, 5.2m): The trend of Romanian pop stars pretending to be Spanish continues unabated and this was the year's stand-out. Getting the genuinely Colombian guy to stand around in the background shouting "dale! fuego! si! si!" for most of the song might be slightly problematic tho.

https://youtu.be/lQPCWp2A_Rk

Ira Levtiskaya - Vova Tantsuet (UKR, 0.3): An oddity among oddities. I haven't been able to find out much about Levitskaya other than that she appears to have been a model at some point and is married to a minor oligarch who is presumably bankrolling her pop career. The song is probably best described as Putin-baiting oompah-pop and Ira sells it well.

https://youtu.be/cdOdCDFa1GY

Gulsen - Bangir Bangir (TUR, 156.2m): Pulsing Turkish moombah-pop.
