KInd of surprised some of them were still there, especially since the panther burns had gone since yesterday.
Almstt looked like there were some new titles being added since I'd looked through the racks a few days back.

Unfortunately there were several racks that had just been cleared since yesterday so some things I'd been looking at before had been packed away. But I think most of what i got today had been things i had been meaning to get for a while.

I picked up a couple fo Punk 45 sets from the sale last week and was hoping to get at least the Akron volume but entire area had been cleared.

Best thing I've heard lately is Horse Lords'Interventions: exuberant grooves, droney but catchy, keeps me awake even late at night, when droniness can z-z-z me right out. Also some variety, like a chiming, buzzing thus-spake-thee-guitar feature, followed by crackling percussion, finale "It Never Ended" with rousing vocal samples. 6 tracks, 36 minutes, just right. Download and physicals out 4/29, but can preview here (even got a trailer)

Curious about the Larry Coryell track that kicks that off. From my favorite album of his (the one where he tried singing, and everyone hated it...everyone was wrong).

dlp9001, Thursday, 11 February 2016 22:37 (nine years ago)

Its really hard to go wrong with most late 60s-early 70s fusion up to about '73-74. Coryell and his group Eleventh House records are worth hearing if you like that kind of music.

earlnash, Thursday, 11 February 2016 23:08 (nine years ago)

Coryell's early band the Free Spirits finally had their more expansive live sound made available a couple fo years ago on a cd called live At The Scene. Previously their only representation was the studio lp which had constrained them in 3 minute song format without the space to improvise thanks to external control over what they were allowed to record.
I think members had mentioned a live tape that provided a better picture for years and Sunbeam released that set in 2011.

I think Coryell's early 70s run of solo lps are supposed to be very interesting too. Pretty far out and stuff. Long improvisations etc.

Ray Russell who was also improvising on electric guitar at pretty much the same time is also interesting and a bit further out at the time, odd that he went onto writing tv theme music etc.

Bravo, Stevo, for rating the live Free Spirits album---it's a lot of fun, and ditto much of Coryell in the 60s and early 70s---uneven, but he sure had the spirit (speaking of the 60s, leave us not forget he was in the original Gary Burton Quartet, who were pioneering jazz-rockers for sure, also with a touch of country and/or folk at times). Also on Herbie Mann's Memphis Underground with Sonny Sharrock, and those records with Steve Marcus, as well as Eleventh Hous He turned out to be one of those musos who can play anything, and so they do: T-Bone Walker-style electric Texas blues, homage re Brazilian masters, tribute to Wes Montgomery, etc. etc. etc.---he did all these pretty well, but why not just listen to the originals? But there was a tyme, and he always sounds at least okay on the local jazz station, no matter what he happens to be playing.

dow, Friday, 12 February 2016 18:03 (nine years ago)

now you guys have me listening to Larry Coryell tracks that i haven't thought of in years. this is very silly music (let's see how many notes we can play in 11/8!), but has a spirit of fun for jazz fusion:

i realise that the ilm hivemind hate nu-era garage rock and roll, but fuck it.
on a vodka fueled saturday night, there is genuinely no other band i would wish to see live.
however, that's not possible, so, i just have to strap on the 'phones and up the tinnitus groove.

A Golden Void live set that went up on dime today and a track that sounds like its a cover of Maggot Brain.
Some pretty lengthy guitar excursions elsewhere in the set including a Neil Young cover.
Set was recorded 3 days ago in Germany and doesn't have the tracklist in its info file.

It's Isaiah Mitchell from Earthless's side project if you haven't heard of them. I picked up the 2nd lp recently before HMV closed down that hasa far more contemporary heavy rock production on it.

I was sat on a train to Glasshoughton today, en route to a trampoline arena. I was listening to that last M0ster album "When You Cut into The Present" , which is a badass jazz-psyche-rock recording that reminds me of The Psychic Paramount's last one.

I realize posting a photo AND then adding some words to let people know what album it is might be a really time-consuming task, but for albums with no writing on the sleeve maybe you could go that extra step.

What I'm saying is, what's that album featuring the guy in the fuzzy hat holding a violin?

Homer complete the Gear Fab reissue of the Grown in the USA lp plus singles and unreleased stuff. Unfortunately the mastering is really quiet. Cos what you can hear of teh music seems pretty great, pretty blazing guitar when it cuts loose.

Magic Enclosed reissue of a 1969 hippy rock lp that verges on soul and also has some pretty great guitar all over it. Especially the 12 minute jam last track. THis has bonus singles tracks and a lotof the 2nd lp on it.

H.P. LOvecraft the Revola reissue of teh 1st 2 lps. Somebody should reissue the live set from May 68 cos it's pretty tasty

Larry Coryell Barefoot Boy. Free jazz jams featuring the guitarost on about equal footing with other band members. Had me wondering why i wasn't hearing more lead guitar throughout in places.

Another Side by Fingers INc. Late 80s house lp finally gets officially released, This again had me wondering what constituted lead instrument since most things seemed to be playing rhythm. Maybe I have my model for listening to this stuff wrong since I don't have much house stuff. This is also pretty close to an electronic soul/r'n'b which might lead me to have certain expectations about the way the music is constructed.

Just now in Five Goys Burgers And Fries: The Doors, "20th Century Fox," delightfully Kinksy, but a little more deadpan, with young Morrison not imitating Ray D. nor needing to---he really was a good vocal stylist, when not overdoing the Lizard King thing, although even that pomposity could work, as b-movie Cali cult leader presumption--- and Big Star's "Semptember Girls," with Stone Temple Pilots' "Free" (title? Goes "Freeee-eeeee" like Pearl Jam) as basic burger meat between steamed buns.

Last night on Public Radio's Beale Street Caravan: Memphis Ukulele Band, moonlighting downhome pros, members of other groups, (one guy also works at Sun) now with their own album and shows. Rec to fans Have Moicy! and related, incl. style and sensibility-wise, like R. Crumb's Cheap Suit Serenaders, though this set of covers (except for one good original) doesn't go back further than the 50s. The voice that really grabbed me was that of one young Kyndle, a girl---well, a woman, I guess---mentions having been in several bands, but she sounds like a totally poised yet never smarty-pants ingenue, especially delivering her killer version of Melanie's "Brand New Key." Haven't heard the album yet, but this is pretty good---can stream, or prob download if you've got Firefox FlashGot, for inst.:

NUTS TO YOU - DOUG CLARK & THE HOT NUTS (1961)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doug_Clark_and_the_Hot_Nuts

my friend gave me a bunch of records that had scratches on them and this is one of them and holy shit it is incredible. they are a garage/soul band from Chapel Hill doing a live show. it is incredible. a concept album about nuts. every song is about nuts. they sing Chuck Berry's "Ding-A-Ling". they sing "She's got the whole world by the balls". they sing "Gay Caballero". it is dirty south as fuck. it is garage rock and doo wop and comedy rock. highly highly recommend this album. way ahead of its time. some samples here:

Old Lunch, here's what xgau says about the 48-track (lots more than Spotify's sampler) Jon Savage's 1966: The Year The Decade Exploded. Thinking about getting it myself:
http://noisey.vice.com/blog/expert-witness-velvet-underground-bob-dylan-rolling-stones
I'm also told that it has even more tracks than are commented on in Jon Savage's 1966 the book, but the CD booklet covers the additional tracks.

"If you got a rocket let it go" and "Sometimes you are that guy/Of course you are/Of course you are" might be the central lines here, but so could any other, while listening to Robert Pollard's Of Course You Are, rec also to fans of Robyn Hitchcok and early 70s Nilsson, though this is less ballady. Good arrangements of one-man-band Nick Mitchell, overall much more varied than the first few tracks, but those are satisfying too: http://www.avclub.com/article/listen-exclusive-stream-robert-pollards-newest-rec-232880

Heron Oblivion's growing on me, but still frustrated by the predictability of their oh-so-ritualistic approach, with later tracks already recycling bits of thee earlier, like this debut is also a career overview; guess we should listen only when too stoned to remember or care. Why does Lisa Walker's equally floaty voice go w Wussy rockin better than Baird's does with this waaah-waah etc." Makes me even more thankful for Sandy Denny's musical-emotional range.

Infernal Machine: Despite the title of this new New Keepers Of The Water Towers album, which had me hoping for something a bit in the Hawkwind-Motorhead line ov space-rock, it's a bit slow and distant, pretty formations floating by, despite the "just wait for it" signals of drums---like the drums, like all of it really, except seems---hate to say "less than the sum of its parts," and faster-than-light is a lot to ask, but just pretend you found a wormhole, guys: gimme that old tyme science fiction, and get on with it. No, better listen some more before signing off for good.
Good Grief, by Lucius, is almost the opposite: despite/including emphasis on voices, as structurally ingenious as, say, St. Vincent, but without the carefully distanced distress signals and games of clues: it's an emotional onslaught, maybe ultimately implosive, while wailing though the castle, incl. towers and dungeons, that Love built: hey babes, you wanted a Relationship, this relationship, you got it. Mind you, they can also come up with a hooky chorus, catchy verses, and I expect to hear some of this on the radio---"The college radio," Butthead specifies, and he's right of course.
Not to be listened to if you're already feeling unsettled, unless you wanna get more unsettled of course:
http://www.npr.org/2016/03/02/468552470/first-listen-lucius-good-grief

dow, Wednesday, 16 March 2016 15:59 (nine years ago)

Had to take a break before the rest of that, but speaking of St. Vincent, "Born Again Teen" is like her x Motown: ah, those youthful mood swings, maybe especially on acid. But/and the mirror sisters of Lucious eventually rock their way to higher ground, for another smoke break anyway: "It's all a manual that we've been writing, a future instructional guide / if we skipped ahead to our pre-fulfilled dreams, we'd be lost without our own advice." Ha, good one.

Lambert, Hendricks and Ross 1st disc of a 2cd compi of several lps which I bought a few years back. Think it got mislaid somewhere so I refound it recently and am playing regularly for first time in ages.
Vocalese I think. Satirical lyrics sung to fit horn solos. Interesting.

Clear Light new reissue of 67lp by psych group signed to Elektra. Their fate was messed up by poor relationship with Paul Rothschild.
Lp is pretty dark and doomy for 67 psych.

He don't half look like a young kevin Shields on that cover. Must be a total coincidence since the photo is mid 60s and I don't think it was circulated before taht lp was released much much later and i think several years after MBV ceased to be.
LP is really good too. Nice avanty garagey stuff. He then went off and recorded some far more folky stuff which may have been reissued since.

Back From The Grave vol 1&2.
Tamam Shud Aztec cd of Goolutionites and the Real People.
Human Beast Volume One (sounds amazing for an lp that the band thought totally misrecorded).
Dory Previn The Ultimate Collection which confusingly has the main title Mythical Kings and Iguanas. May contain most of the tracks from that lp, I've yet to confirm. Bvt has them in mixed up order with those from several other lps including the 1958 Dory Langston lp. I like that ok pretty arch jazz vocal stuff but pretty different in sound to the 70s stuff.

I don't think I've seen this sleeve before.
http://www.aurora.dti.ne.jp/~zappa/imtheone.jpg

could be that I only know it from the reissue she did through her own label
but it looks like taht based its design on a versionof the original sleeve which is this
https://rymimg.com/lk/o/l/c29081f0404ef0e725e2b7752669cdf5/1323631.jpg

great lp anyway.
Would reccommend it to anyone who enjoyed buffy Ste marie's Illuminations though it is [pretty different.

Do wish I'd picked up her later 70s compilation before it went out of print. Clips of her from taht era on youtube are pretty great, even the one where she's fronting the Bill Bruford band though the feel is a bit different.
Somebody was upping live sets from the late 70s by her to Dime a month or 2 ago which were pretty cool too

Also been listening to one disc of Wee Tam and the Big Huge, I think Wee Tam, really getting into that too.

not sure how many times I'm going to listen to this. I think I wound up selling the original sometime in the mid 80s when I'd gone more punky. & I think I thought it was a lot more glossy than I really wanted it to be at the time. Seemed like big label money had come in and got some bands who I preferred in their more indie produced versions. Certainly true of the High Tide track that is the lead off one on disc 1.
But having been around at the time I thought I'd grab a copy. So far only part of the way through disc 1.

Just listening to the song 60 Seconds Too Late and thinking that Mike Jones might have actually written it with me in mind. Slightly morphed though.

Tommy James & The Shondells "Mony Mony" LP (1968)

As good as the "Crimson and Clover" LP but not as good as "I Think We're Alone Now" but still i love this band. Blue eyed soul and lofi ripoffs of Motown, girl group, Jerry Lewis meets Velvet Underground, horns-and-organ-led garage rock & soul. That glockenspeil on the Del Shannon style "Run Away With Me". "I'm Taken" and "Get Out Now" both have choruses that could be by the Killers or U2 or something and feature futuristic post rock guitar and organ pop deconstruction stuff that is way ahead of its time. Dance floor killer "Night Time (I'm a Lover)" should be on David Bowie's "Young Americans" or at least "Pin-Ups" (or alongside Nilsson's "Jump Into the Fire") it has a garage psych arrangement and 4-on-the-floor drone stomp and is just a straight up rave with a great tremelo guitar arpeggio. Anyone ever heard "Hanky Panky" LP? I bet it's the best.

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Monday, 6 June 2016 23:21 (nine years ago)

Obv the title song "Mony Mony" is like Nirvana. Not the band, the actual place.

Wasn't the Tommy James & the Shondells history a bit complex. I think his first big hit was several years after initial release or at least recording. Is that Hanky Panky? & something like recorded '62 national hit '65 or am I remembering that wrong?

xpost

They cut "Hanky Panky" in early 1964 and it was only a regional hit in the midwest. The band broke up the next year when they graduated from high school and all went their separate ways. During 1965 the song started getting traction in Pennsylvania from local DJs and bootleggers responded by pressing thousands of copies (80,000 according to wiki -- the black market really helping artists in this case!). In April 1966 Tommy James visited New England to promote the newly hot single, recruited a new Shondells for touring, and then sold the "Hanky Panky" master to Roulette Records. With a bigger label and national promotion, it ended up blowing up in July 1966.

wwwwwwowwwww, splendid, thank you skot! Great testimonial, too. Though personally, I wouldn't want to *just* start it around the 8 minute mark (although that does kill!), cos it had even non-prog me from the beginning. Sunny Sunday fluid dynamics-->heavy boogie seems like a classic Groundhogs move, though come to think of it not sure they ever did it this well. Guy in YouTube Comments proclaims them as Scands (says they're Danish) compatible, I'd say, w Trad, Gras, Stenar at their best or best intended, and other musical ancestors of Dungen, for isnt. Fun fact: the piano player in Midnight Sun played on one of the first Albert Ayler albums, My Name Is Albert Ayler.

(Midnight Sun were originally called Rainbow Band and they put out an album a year before the Midnight Sun album with an earlier version of "Living On The Hill" which is on Youtube. They basically re-recorded the Rainbow Band album for the Midnight Sun album. Which doesn't happen every day. Both albums are great. If you need more...)

Info on that Peter Maxwell Davies, please! Esp. listening experience.

to be honest, most of the listening experience for me consists of "ïs it over yet?" it's long... very, very long. a few moments where things seem to be working up to a dramatic point, but mostly listen to this as background sound. though to be fair it is a score for an *avant-garde* ballet, so the visual component is entirely lacking. still trying to find a way into his later works.

as far as his other (earlier) compositions, would recommend eight songs for a mad king in the julius eastman recording (doesn't seem to be on youtube!) also really like this:

it's quite majestic the way "al quaeda (branch davidian)" develops from an extremely slow lurch with barely recognizable rhythm to a distorted downtempo nubeat/bodymusic kind of thing. like reverse disintegration loops but with beats: starts out sounding like dying cassette tape, ends with recognizable electronic dance form.

which is pretty fantastic. Sounds about 10 years earlier than its 1975 release. But with added African tinge. But really this flits between things that sound like mid 60s garage pop and bubblegum but with beefier guitar. I think I love this lp. Now Again have a decent sounding remaster of it out.

//rymimg.com/lk/f/l/1b35f551333e7505d517a147c067cc8b/1665442.jpg
Have wanted a copy of this since I got the Nu Yorica compi on Souljazz back in the mid to late 90s. I found out recently that there is a cheap Japanese reissue cd of it around so grabbed a copy of that.
Great funky lp. Has Eddie Palmieri on keyboards though not sure how much that stands out.

//rymimg.com/lk/f/l/065921219309f5bd142144ada60411a0/6042955.jpg
This has some great stuff on it, mainly noticing the Affectionate Punch and 4th Drawer Down stuff I think. But have mainly been listening to the first disc.
Actually some of the 2nd sounds a bit mushy but still great stuff. first disc does sound great so I think I may still need to pick up the lp reissues. I have the previous ones but that is from 15 years ago so probably do need to upgrade.

THough I think the soundfiles I'm listening to may have reversed teh titles on a couple of tracks. i was listening to a 17 minute Dreaming Girls and wondering why it was being roundly dismissed by a number of people.

Might just be that I like the track and others don't and I'm reading duration wrong cos I have a headfull of flu

Stevolende, Friday, 1 July 2016 11:30 (nine years ago)

@ boxedjoy - yes it is, and I finally bought Rispah too, which is also excellent, albeit pretty different. I'd quite liked the first album but not gone any further for some reason. They've developed into something really quite special.

which is great. I thought it was going to be more electric but it is great jazzy stuff anyway. Him with a small combo in 1968 playing a lot of the material from the first couple of lps plus a solo keyboard elegy to lenny Bruce.
Looks like this is OOP . I just went through a load of external hard drives i no longer have connected and shifetd a load of stuff onto one of the drives I am currently using so have access to this again after not hearing it in years

//rymimg.com/lk/f/l/a9b08a2810bfd7e0d152bf2983cfe228/1939737.jpg
I left this in a pile for too long unplayed and the hard drive i'd copied it to has crashed.
But wow, visceral stuff.
Not sure if this has been at all influential but would hope it has been. has anybody directly cited it?

van the man - it's too late... vol 2

brimstead, Monday, 4 July 2016 20:51 (nine years ago)

Made two tapes to play at the Sunburned/Dredd Foole/Tom Carter show last week. Listened to them a bunch before the show. Told Tom Carter the next day that he could have them since he came in the store looking for tapes to play in the car. I actually missed seeing Tom play though. Which was a bummer. He came too late for me. Had to get home. One Maxell 90 minute tape and one TDK 110 minute tape. Just stuff from records I had been listening to a lot lately. Thus, their inclusion here on this thread:

Tape One

Larry Coryell - Cleo's Mood (best cheap Coryell album. probably five bucks online.)

Jacques Michel - Horesco Referens (great record. epic french chanson-style vocals mixed with 60's rock and fx.)

Treeborn - Skybound Train (sold this record today in the store to an online friend who stopped by. private press 70's jazz rock with west coast rock vocals.)

Alan Bown - Make Up Your Mind

Peter C. Johnson - Snowblind (one of my fave records in recent years. major label but home-recorded and weird.)

Jack Traylor & Steelwind - Time To Be Happy

Jukka Tolonen - Aurora Borealis (Part II)

Ripple - Ripplin'

Bernard Lubat & His Mad Ducks - Pappy Thomas

Association P.C. - Frau Theunissen's Kegel (the kind of record that can blow your head off)

Dirty John's Hot Dog Stand - Blue Skies

Salvation - Salvation Jam

Midnight Sun - Living On The Hill

Tape Two

Julie Felix - Clotho's Web

Tom Lucas - Red Letter Day

Chilliwack - I Got You Fixed

Roger Saunders - Darkness

Johnny Hammond - Rock Steady

Pat Martino - Law

Country Funk - When I'm Without You

Ivar Avenue Reunion - Ride Mama Ride

Jerri Jackson - Love Me

Mutzie - Highway (essential!)

Exile - The Bobber/New Ways - Train Train

Danny Vest - Take My Love And Shove It Up Your Heart

Michael Powell - In The Silence

Henry Kaiser - Future Blues/The Jinx Blues

Unit 5 - New Leather Jacket (best song!)

Juicy Groove - Tired Of Bein' Poor

Banchee - Tom's Island

Robert Wood - The High Priestess (Vibrana)

Expat friend in Brussels says all his tapes got stole, CDs are in storage, so he sent me this link to one of his favorite mixes, which I like right from the beginning, unlike most (also unlike so many, it doesn't rely on predictable arcs for the dancefloor). Seems like it's based mostly (not all) on 70s vinyl---psychedelic soul-oriented, though not many predictable choices---so turn it up:

which has some great songs on it that i know better from compilations. Smile is otherworldly the extended versiono f this also adds Wings which is one of my favourites by them.
THis came out around the time I first went to see them so it was probably what they were playing at the time. I think my first current lp by them was the next one Wonderful and frightening World whereas I was buying some of the earlier stuff at the time. & I think it's mainly the first few lps I've listened to. Though I do love 84-89 B-sides,. So maybe what I need to learn from thsi si taht life extends beyond the Hex Enduction Hour.

Ghost B.C. - Meliora - didn't like this at first, now digging it, I think I'm starting to think of them in a better way like more of a manufactured pop version of metal and it's good at that, like a satanic Ace of Base

Schoolboy Q - Blank Face LP, YG - Still Brazy - gangsta rap traditionalism that feels fresh

Well now, here's something you don't come across everyday, even on the World Wide Web: Dan Hicks And The Hot Licks at the Boarding House in San Francisco, full show, over an hour. Although I'm listening to the well-executed flac (which works fine on free VLC Player), Hicks's voice---singing, and in very low-key, almost diffident patter between songs---also acoustic guitars and fiddle, all seem to lack presence sometimes, like so many low-treble show recordings---but! In terms of character actor less-is-more, he can be pretty effective, and can follow any tune he can write, which is most of 'em, at least in terms of rhythmic agility, which counts a lot when this combo takes off, and yes the fiddle and guitars do get more apparent when excited---and! the Lickettes' voices are very present, given half a chance--kinda underutilized--- crucially! Jaime Leopold's upright bass is just so rich 'n' juicy throughout.
Striking It Rich, which is also live, and the first legit LP with this (most popular) line-up, might bring out his voice etc.a bit more, dunno, don't have it, but this one-shot FM set certainly kept lassoing my wandering attention.
There's also a show on here with his comeback group, the Acoustic Warriors, which BBChron says is even jazzier, but I haven't listened yet (all the shows on here are also available as mp3s).

Omar Khorshid and His Group
[ Live in Australia 1981
Post-surf electric Eastern modal clarity in waves, wires (duh), and other forms.
Sound quality doesn't bother me at all, though if I knew his studio, suppose it might. Can always turn it up. The excitement of music and audience def cuts through.
He was still mining Turkey's own rich vein of psychedelic 60s rock 'til his death in a car crash, the same year as this tour.

ahhhh .. indeed.

have spent all day soaking up the retro-synth groove of blood music.

GosT, Perturbator, Dan Terminus, and Dynatron ..

shove it all into a random mix with fade in/out on, and you have hours of dark synth brilliance.

great '69 set from Amsterdam paradiso where the vocals are left pretty much inaudible despite it being a very clear recording since they didn't go through the right channels. I read that the few bits of vocal you do hear are picked up by the drum mic-ing.

a lot of two short records by Vaperror and DJ Camgirl (who are the same person). This is essentially rave-colored breakbeat music, with juke and acid feels as well. What it really tells me is that we are now seeing artists who are recognizably post-Lone and post-Rustie, bringing in the speed and energy of DJ Rashad to their production styles. There is also the visual aesthetic of vaporwave in their album art, but to my ears, not so much in the actual sound. See also last year's excellent release by Machine Girl.

chin : is that the mindfu(n)ck album ?

It is. Been a while since I listened. I've got so much bound up with it I'm not remotely objective, but I think it holds up - cracking production (particularly the guitars) and the mythology around its creation is something that needs exploring/re-telling, I reckon.

Sunn O))) Brother Where Art Thou? (Chinaski), Friday, 9 September 2016 21:08 (nine years ago)

One thing I love for a bit of late night listening at the moment is the McCoy Tyner/Stephane Grappelli joint One On One. Only true masters can exude such modest beauty, or some bullshit like that.

calzino, Friday, 9 September 2016 21:52 (nine years ago)

I've got two different play lists working. One list is a mix of early to mid 60s UK rock bands like The Beatles, The Who, The Kinks, Small Faces, The Yardbirds, Them and the Rolling Stones up to about 1965. The other list is a bunch of various hard rock/metal live albums with a mix of the Melvins, Fu Manchu, Motorhead, Dio, Flipper, Corrosion of Conformity and Iron Maiden.

Forgot I had this but sound is pretty great.
I didn't hear about the gig until after it happened but did catch teh next one.
But this is a pretty fully formed band. Playing some Birthday Party stuff including Mutiny which i'm not sure teh Birthday party played live much and wasn't completed in the studio by a full band since Rowland bailed while it was being recorded and had to be replaced by Blixa.

great to finally get it on officially released cd. Not sure how perfect the sound is, but better than a needledrop.
Vocal treatment on the title track seems oddly jarring, but may be the way it's supposed to sound.

//e.snmc.io/lk/f/l/ba343cad5eb2d87d62297685896a1527/1582928.jpg
sounds quite electric Sun Raish. This is several voices from the British free scene playing something more jazzy.
Got upped to demonoid a couple of days ago then I found that the new edition of Wire hasa primer on the Spontaneous Music ensemble and its offshoots which might have cued the uploading of it. Anyway glad to hear it cos I really enjoyed it.

have an og copy of aldebaran and oddly jarring sounds about right (couldn't ever be worse than the radioactive). i take it there's nothing in the way of extras on the reissue?

There are 4 bonus tracks but I think they're all instrumental demoes.

xxpost The instrumental bonus tracks on Farewell Aldebaran stand on their own, sometimes *very* different in vibe etc. than the corresponding tracks w vocals and other elements using these in various ways.

somebody upped this to Demonoid a couple of days ago and it's pretty sublime i places. Just listening to the long track Spirit of Peace(Tribute to Elvin Jones)
Think I might just buy this since its cheap on BGO. Great spiritual jazz fusiony stuff with electric guitar and I think Stevens back on a full size kit after years of him intentionally playing a minimal one.
Comes from the mid to late 70s and is really rather tasty in a way that things from earlier in that decade tended to be.

One of my all time favs. The s/t is also really good. Would love a lot more lps as individual as this but still somehow similar. Will probably be looking for something along those lines until I stop listening to music.

THis was more the bonus tracks which i think might actually be Cheveau Fou the previous version of the same band.
I got this on cd something like 10 years ago an dit was expanded in that way. I think I played the lp together yesterday and separated off the bonus tracks as I was listening to this on Foobar

Spiritual Hat Minimalism (Sund4r), Sunday, 2 October 2016 14:12 (nine years ago)

I like it. Only 3 of these songs have been released before - "Hear My Train a Comin'", "Izabella" and "Changes" were all included on Live at the Fillmore East in '99. The opening version of "Power of Soul" is noisy and raw as hell. You can really feel the band coming together over the course of the first two or three songs, and the slow blues stuff like "Bleeding Heart" is particularly potent. Everybody plays their ass off throughout. Definitely recommended if you're a fan, and as someone who believes Hendrix made his best music in the last 12 months of his life, I love it.

THat story of Comus thing that Sanctuary put out around 10 years ago was really good. Expanded the materail that was around from the time of that first lp and added the less successful '74 one.
Also had the band history, I think next to nothing was known about them for years, like 3 decades-ish since I don't think the lp was exactly the best well known thing at the time. Not sure what recognition it had before things like the NWW list.

But I think First Utterance is around in several forms on its own.

I have that Julie Driscoll solo lp, picked it up about 10 years ago when it was reissued by Eclectic. Do love her work.
Streetnoise with the Brian Auger Trinity is also really classic. & Open is pretty good, especially Season Of The Witch

I wound up earlier this week watching her perform with teh Spontaneous Music Ensemble in 1971. Video may still be up at Dime.

Feel like I'm 10 years too late to find out about Amenra, who are from the region where I grew up - always kinda ignored them as I'd heard someone describe them as "based on Isis" (the post-metal band, not the terrorists) - but this is quite impressive.

Post-hardcore (the vocals, mostly), post-metal, post-rock, mesmerising, monolithic, cathartic, transcendental:

i've been listening to this pretty much every night since i found it via the pitchfork ambient top 50 thing:

1982, released on cassette through her Ashram’s Avatar Book Institute

i love alice coltrane, but since her Ashram’s Avatar Book Institute stuff is so hard to find, and isn't on streaming services, i had totally missed out on this aspect to her life and music until now.

Yamuna Tira Vihara (Turiya Sings) is my favorite

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 05:02 (nine years ago)

I have been listening to Indian-Brit guitarist/sitar player Amancio D'Silva, not quite in the same league as Alice Coltrane but his Hum Dono (wrongly credited as a Joe Harriott album) and Cosmic Eye - Dream Sequence albums are both shit hot.

calzino, Tuesday, 15 November 2016 06:41 (nine years ago)

Listening through the Pink Floyd Early Years set. Got some really nice stuff on it innit?

Also John Coltrane Olé from the Atlantic Mono set.

& what's left of an Amon Duul II Soundtracks set taht had several tracks removed because they'd been offically released.

3 of the 4 titles are now available on CD. I have 2 of them - Divine Songs and Infinite Chants - and need to pick up Turiya Sings myself.

A set circulated on Dime taht had been a physical bootleg I think.
Blurb from the infofile says this
"During 1969-1971 the german band Amon Duul II, at their peak of success, contributed music to several filmprojects. By this time, it was a new thing for
a rockband, especially in Germany, to collaborate with directors und the film-
industry. It was a young generation of directors like Rainer Werner Fassbinder,
Alexander Kluge, Hans-Jürgen Syberberg and Rüdiger Nüchtern, that were
interested in the music of Amon Duul II, because the sound fits to the
experimental and sometimes weird movies, that they had in mind. The music
often flows in the background, creating an special atmosphere to the specific filmscene while the dialogues of people and noises are in foreground. Sometimes
the other way around. Most of the stuff is released official on dvd by now (except
Chamsin) but it seems that only a few people know, the music is by Amon
Duul II. For those, this package tries to put it all together, trying to capture all
snippets and jams in the movies; giving the music the respect that it deserves.
The musc comes from different movie-lineages, so the quality is different
from source to source, but was remixed carefully. This project is a project of love
with no commercial interests. All the best, Quinn. (2016)"

Came across a used CD of Argent's live album "Encore" and have finally gotten around to give it a listen. I really only knew the couple of tunes that were classic rock nuggets by them, but this live record is better than I would have thought. They were quite a bit more prog than I expected, but with some really good vocals. I'd like to check out some of their studio records.

I'm also working through Nick Cave's B-Sides & Rarities collection for the first time. It's definitely high quality for non-LP tracks.

Other than that I have been working through a lot of early/mid 70s freedom rock stuff like Alice Cooper, Bloodrock, Nazareth, Trapeze, Sir Lord Baltimore, Elf, etc...

earlnash, Monday, 28 November 2016 00:14 (nine years ago)

I saw Argent in a feedback loop with the audience, getting each other higher and higher, beyond any drug-predictable extent (especially considering this was deep in the Dark Ages of Quaaludes, doggie downers). Dunno how many of 'em were former Zombies---maybe just Rod Argent---but yeah, good vocals. That's mainly what I remember. Some of us were just waiting for the radio hits, and a lot of show bizzy padding, but the whole thing seemed surprisingly substantial at the time (maybe that was the progness, although overall pretty accessible)(J. Geils Band headlined, so accessibility was key).

Galactic Zoo Dossier by Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come is a pretty good listen. His singing reminds me of a crazed Tom Jones on the track 'Sunrise'.

I really love that early 70s electric organ sound.

earlnash, Wednesday, 14 December 2016 02:08 (nine years ago)

The Kingdom Come clip in Glastonbury fayre is pretty tasty too. Wish there was more stuff around from the era.
I think GZD is one of the best psychedelic lps of its era. Not sure what else is a s good other than Hawkwind.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 14 December 2016 14:43 (nine years ago)

That Arthur Brown record was from '71 so there still was some psych echoes still happening. It's sound fits also along side your electric organ hard rock groups like Uriah Heep, Atomic Rooster and Deep Purple too.

earlnash, 'bout tyme for some Atomic Rooster reissues, don't you think? Also, speaking of Arthur Brown, did you see this over the Rolling ect. Ingest All etc.:

The last I heard of Arthur Brown, around the turn of the century, he was a music therapist in Austin. Reportedly, he wrote songs with clients.

THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN Announces First US Tour In Nearly Five Decades

After a highlight performance at Psycho Las Vegas 2016, hugely influential UK heavy psychedelic progressive eccentrics THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN announces their 2017 Zim Zam Zim tour marking their first run of live performances since 1969.

The God Of Hellfire himself, Arthur Brown, will be celebrating fifty years since releasing the debut single "Devil's Grip," which helped shape the British and worldwide psychedelic movement. Pushing theatrics to their dystopian hellscape limits would earn Brown acolytes in everyone from David Bowie and Alice Cooper to Kiss, Marilyn Manson, and Lady Gaga to the entire genre of black metal, and his influence continues to spread today.

"The last time I toured the US with THE CRAZY WORLD was early 1969," Brown confirms. "It was our third tour there. At the time, the band had been headlining massive festivals, alongside Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jefferson Airplane, and other top attractions of the time. Iggy Pop and Alice Cooper were still only mildly famous, somewhere down the bill."

Zim Zam Zim takes its name from THE CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN's latest album, released in 2014. They'll be joined on this landmark trip by Ohio rockers Electric Citizen, and shows will feature generational sonic offspring like White Hills, Acid King, Pallbearer, Danava, and Jex Thoth.
