Genre Stats

For every genre in Glenn's big map of the universe that had at least 10 albums with at least one vote, I compiled a top 10 list. Not all the genre assignments make sense, but hey. I also tried to work out genre-subgenre relationships, so votes for "indie r&b" also count towards "r&b".

It's great! Her previous two albums with the Reich and Pärt arrangements were already really good, but this time she's playing compositions specifically written for percussion instruments (not just pitched percussion like marimba, but skins too), which gives her the chance to really flex her muscles, metaphorically and literally.

There was some comment in another thread some time ago about what percentage of the music we listen to is new artists vs. old favorites, so I was wondering where my ballot stood in that respect.

So out of 25, there were:

8 albums that came out of nowhere (artists I had never heard of before)
5 albums from artists I knew of but I had never listened to or cared much about before
4 albums from artists who had already released albums I liked (where the 2015 release is not my favorite of theirs)

10 / 4 / 6 / 5 for me, so a decent amount of new blood.

I'd quite like to see the all-time list reconfigured to take in the relative size of the voter base. The albums are overwhelmingly from the last few years but that's mostly because way more people are voting.

Thanks to seandalai et al. for your compilation efforts — I enjoyed the countdown and stats. I listened to a few hours of the albums playlist on shuffle before voting and didn't hear anything that truly "grabbed" me — it was interesting to hear such a variety of music this way, but it also somehow made taste as such seem totally arbitrary. This is probably part of why I've typically tended to latch on to particular artists and follow them for a long time, at least until they start really disappointing me (or perhaps I change in some way). I also don't have the consistent investment in new music that a lot of ILMers do, though I admire it.

Joanna Wang was my favourite discovery of the entire polling season, so your efforts were by no means in vain

Looking back over my ballot, I remember Algiers was 26 on my list. I decided to place Fall Out Boy ahead of it because I felt sorry for it, but Algiers is the better record.

Which would have made my only non-placing selection Lonelady, an album I think might have done well if more people had heard it.

I had a hard time with the Lonelady; its weird because I think if I had encountered it about two months prior, when I was listening to a lot of second-tier no wave and early On-U and stuff like thay, it wouldve clicked with me...but I decided to give it a listen just coming off the metal poll, and it seemed a little slight.
