ejemplo (crüt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:18 (nine years ago)

third time is a charm?

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:19 (nine years ago)

i had a blast putting this poll together even though it was so much work.

it was basically like doing two polls.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:20 (nine years ago)

so two for the price of none

10. Love and Rockets
By: Love and Rockets
Released: May 1989
103 Points, 3 Votes

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:24 (nine years ago)

ok, it feels like the first time

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:25 (nine years ago)

i think i have this image thing worked out.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:25 (nine years ago)

Looking forward to the roll out. Not fond of that album, though, and the cover hurts my eyes.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:27 (nine years ago)

i did like this album at the time because they rocked again after the very mellow Earth Sun Moon album. will admit that it didn't have that many stand out songs on it. i did throw it some love as i submitted a Top 10 and didn't want to include any compilations.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:42 (nine years ago)

not going to do too much tonight as this poll will be run at more reasonable hours.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 00:45 (nine years ago)

i was able to listen to just about everything again for this poll except Peter Murphy's solo stuff. i only sampled a few songs so i probably missed out. just ran out of time.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 01:02 (nine years ago)

Excited for the results!
Thought this would be higher. It's my favorite L&R album.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 01:50 (nine years ago)

this album was so much fun to listen to again.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 02:19 (nine years ago)

Like I said in the voting thread, at the time this was too folky for my taste but I really liked it when I listened to it again for the poll.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 03:47 (nine years ago)

Love both of these albums more than most Bauhaus LPs...

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 03:57 (nine years ago)

Good work Bee OK! Looking forward to the run down.

I think I misread the album bit, otherwise some of the L&R albums would have had more marks.

onimo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 07:39 (nine years ago)

i had something come up but we are back.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 20:47 (nine years ago)

cool mods fixed the first picture, thanks mods.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 20:48 (nine years ago)

too low!

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 20:53 (nine years ago)

i was the one vote for Night Music because i have that one on CD.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:26 (nine years ago)

In 2015, David J announced in a solo performance that the album's title came from an incident in which he and Ash were smoking hash in a car and the car caught fire, burning from the inside.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:32 (nine years ago)

i found that funny.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:33 (nine years ago)

I didn't submit an albums ballot, but if I had, Burning From the Inside would most likely have been my #1.

That's a pretty strange way for the title to have come about.

Austin, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:35 (nine years ago)

Never really understood why that one is usually the least favorite Bauhaus album among fans. Too varied?

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

not enough Murphy probably.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:45 (nine years ago)

oh dammit I meant to vote in this

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:53 (nine years ago)

Pop was my #2 LP - chose it over Everything! because it's such a consistent little record... Everything! has a lot of meandering and fucking around that I tend to skip.

I like Burning From The Inside, but (other than "She's In Parties") the Peter Murphy sung tracks aren't their best. The closer it veers to Love & Rockets, the more appealing it is.

Speaking of which, Seventh Dream is sooooo awesome.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 21:58 (nine years ago)

we could have used the extra vote. hope you enjoy this roll-out and you can comment anyways.

xpost

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:03 (nine years ago)

one great thing about doing this poll was re-listening to this album. it has held up extremely well.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:04 (nine years ago)

Bauhaus were before my time, so the way i got into them was via 1979 - 1983 comp. i never did buy this album, so this poll was really the first time hearing this album. i did buy other Bauhaus records over time, just not this one.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:26 (nine years ago)

as planned.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:50 (nine years ago)

The Sky's Gone Out was my number one vote.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:53 (nine years ago)

Kinda surprised that Sky polled ahead of Mask - have never been able to get into it as much as the other Bauhaus LPs.

#1 was my #1 - solid album.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 22:59 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:15 (nine years ago)

Love Hysteria beating Deep is surprising.

ejemplo (crüt), Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:16 (nine years ago)

i wanted to use the original artwork for this poll, plus i didn’t have time to do 70 images. Only problem there is i started to run out of things for Love and Rockets. Bauhaus stuff is really tough to find on-line, they don’t even have their own website.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

at long last, results for the songs.

Bee OK, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:49 (nine years ago)

Also surprised at Sky beating Mask. But when I look at the track listing it probably has more songs on it that I love.
In the Flat Field was my number one. (x-post)

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:51 (nine years ago)

Great song! A great opener for Express and for this poll. Love all the distortion in the second part.

LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 23:55 (nine years ago)

Love Hysteria beating Deep is surprising.

― ejemplo (crüt), Wednesday, March 30, 2016 11:16 PM (37 minutes ago)

I adore Love Hysteria! For me, it's by far his most memorable solo collection of songs. The lyrics are often a perfect combination of ridiculous and moving - which I love so much in Peter Murphy's best songs - as exemplified by Socrates the Python. Time Has Got Nothing To Do With It is fantastic. In contrast, I find Deep to be utterly unmemorable. Cuts You Up was a pretty big hit, and I cannot remember how it goes. I will listen to Deep again though, as I haven't heard it in at least 20 years.

Heiress Too (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:05 (nine years ago)

going to try and keep this up to date but i might need some help so it's collaborative.

ILM Love and Rockets, Tones on Tail

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:19 (nine years ago)

that is the Spotify link.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:19 (nine years ago)

pop and seventh dream two of my favorite albums ever and i'm really glad that i bought the u.k. albums when they came out because they totally fucked with them for the u.s. pressings. ruined two perfect albums.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:24 (nine years ago)

u referring to mastering quality, track substitutions, or both?

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:25 (nine years ago)

switching stuff around. adding stuff that wasn't on the original album. adding singles.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:31 (nine years ago)

they have god and mr. smith instead of if there's a heaven above on the u.s. version. lunacy!

scott seward, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:33 (nine years ago)

one of the best album openers ever. the feel of both albums completely different. and pop with go and twist on it is just not pop! a lysergic masterpiece for pete's sake.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:35 (nine years ago)

my kinda poll though. three of my favorite bands. and also there is peter murphy. for his fans.

scott seward, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:41 (nine years ago)

I messed up the artwork, that has nothing to do with Lazy. It is pretty cool however.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:47 (nine years ago)

i also had to fix Spotify. for some reason the first version of Express has messed up songs.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 00:57 (nine years ago)

always thought of "Youth" as their Christian song.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:04 (nine years ago)

or maybe i'm just thinking about the God Bless part of it.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:06 (nine years ago)

i love the way he sings this song. was obsessed with this song at the time. i did vote for it.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:12 (nine years ago)

i think it was number 25.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:13 (nine years ago)

this was my favorite song as a goth teen. I don't care for the radio edit though!

ejemplo (crüt), Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:14 (nine years ago)

I voted for this too. I like the way he sings winnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:26 (nine years ago)

i was really thinking about doing only a Top 35 as i was thinking songs needed triple digits in points to make the run down. when i saw "Cuts You Up" at 37 and below 100 points i then felt it was OK to keep it at a Top 40. after all there were 84 songs that got votes.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:34 (nine years ago)

i did link the video in the voting thread but in the end it did not make my ballot.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 01:41 (nine years ago)

i'm going to drop naming the band in the results, you will know from knowledge, artwork or name of the album.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:10 (nine years ago)

the whole Jazz Butcher angle is interesting, glad they were included in voting. it was only fair. will talk about this more after this part of the poll is finished.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:17 (nine years ago)

oh hell yeah

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:20 (nine years ago)

Glad to discover some Jazz Butcher. I never got around to after all these years.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:28 (nine years ago)

i had to check my ballot to make sure i voted for it, i did. felt like i could vote for every song on this album.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:37 (nine years ago)

right after i say that, i list the artist. need to wrap this up soon...

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:49 (nine years ago)

How many are you doing tonight ?

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 02:55 (nine years ago)

just two more.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:00 (nine years ago)

i will get a much earlier start tomorrow.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:01 (nine years ago)

i think i voted for this, great song.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:04 (nine years ago)

I did. Was always fun to dance to at the alternative/goth night.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:08 (nine years ago)

that funny

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:12 (nine years ago)

if i remember correctly, i was going through a break up and this became a theme song. one of those perfect timing songs.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:13 (nine years ago)

another one i voted for.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:26 (nine years ago)

that is it for tonight, i will get a much earlier start tomorrow.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:29 (nine years ago)

it's 8:30 here, so really too late to be doing this type of stuff.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:30 (nine years ago)

i like how this song just takes off and goes in completely different direction. then it acts like that never happens and switches back again.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 03:33 (nine years ago)

It is a great song. Wasn't on my ballot, but I rediscovered it while listening to ESM again for this poll.
Nice results so far. No Tones On Tail tracks yet though!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 04:33 (nine years ago)

i'm up and ready to go.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:09 (nine years ago)

today's batch is excellent.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:16 (nine years ago)

In his review for Deep, Ned Raggett of Allmusic described "A Strange Kind of Love" as "a striking love song, with acoustic guitar and plaintive Statham keyboards supporting one of Murphy's strongest lyrics and performances." In his separate track review, Raggett also described it as "an understated ballad that finds Murphy at his most personal and affecting, one that contrasts greatly with the equally close but musically surging 'Cuts You Up'" and stated that "Strange Kind of Love" is "perhaps one of Murphy's most affecting overall works in solo or group work either way."

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:21 (nine years ago)

i only had room for one Peter Murphy song and my ballot and it has already been posted.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:36 (nine years ago)

here is a song i voted for.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:41 (nine years ago)

i know they made a faster remix for the single but still preferred the album version of this song. it was such a great song to open up Earth Sun Moon with.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 17:48 (nine years ago)

and now finally

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:00 (nine years ago)

damn, didn't re-size that image.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:01 (nine years ago)

i think i had more fin re-listening to Tones on Tail then anything else for this poll. i could have voted for so many more songs from them but limited myself a bit.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:03 (nine years ago)

and checking my ballot, i didn't vote for this song. now listening to it via the Spotify link i'm wondering why?

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:04 (nine years ago)

checking my phone and that didn't work?

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:14 (nine years ago)

that worked, weird.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:18 (nine years ago)

I have to say TOO LOW for "A Strange Kind Of Love". Understated and gorgeous.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:21 (nine years ago)

Seems like all the songs from Earth Sun Moon are going to place.

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:26 (nine years ago)

it sure does seem like every song from Earth Sun Moon is going to make this poll. not going to confirm or deny.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

lol

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

Tracks that appeared on the original UK release were replaced and re-arranged for the US and Canadian market. The album was also renamed, it was Pop but the US release is called The Album Pop. "The Never Never (Is Forever)", "Performance" and "Slender Fungus" were removed and replace with the singles "Twist", "Go!" and "Christian Says".

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:42 (nine years ago)

"Christian Says" was one of my last cuts from my ballot.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:49 (nine years ago)

Good to see all the Earth Sun Moon love. It's easily my favorite of the Bauhaus related albums.

Austin, Thursday, 31 March 2016 18:50 (nine years ago)

The cover of the album features a detail from Maxfield Parrish's seminal painting Daybreak.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:01 (nine years ago)

I would have had a ballot very heavy on Mask, The Sky's Gone Out and Earth Sun Moon

My #1 song would likely have been "1. David Jay 2. Peter Murphy 3. Kevin Haskins 4. Daniel Ash"

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:01 (nine years ago)

also I am enjoying Ned's quotes all over the Wikipedia entries for these albums

i like to trump and i am crazy (DJP), Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:02 (nine years ago)

they are great, i was going to add a few of them to the albums roll-out but as you can see didn't end up doing that.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:10 (nine years ago)

I remember hearing the Dali's Car album for the first time about fifteen years ago and thinking, "Hey, this isn't nearly as bad as people told me it would be!"

Revisiting it for this poll was a chore, quite frankly, and I now understand where all the hate came from.

Austin, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:16 (nine years ago)

i don't know it at all.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)

my favorite cover for Tones on Tail, part of the reason i used original artwork.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:25 (nine years ago)

i voted for this song, love when the song opens up and the sky's falling.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:30 (nine years ago)

damn, didn't re-size that image. the album part of this poll had larger images.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:44 (nine years ago)

Always found it very similar to "Slice Of Life".

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:52 (nine years ago)

good point, never thought of it that way.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 19:58 (nine years ago)

the best things in life comes in threes?

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:01 (nine years ago)

there goes somebody's number one.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:04 (nine years ago)

'Twas I.

Austin, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:11 (nine years ago)

it does seem like the perfect closing track. i never hear it that way as i owned Night Music but it did close out Pop.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:18 (nine years ago)

i did also include it in my ballot.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:18 (nine years ago)

haha, glad this song made the poll!

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:25 (nine years ago)

the song is not on Spotify:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTUT0PxVLyM

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:28 (nine years ago)

i remember seeing Love and Rockets in Long Beach California during Earth Sun Moon tour? anyways, they did have The Bubblemen come out and do some songs. it was sort of mind blowing with the strobe light and all.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:37 (nine years ago)

i remember not being in the best frame of mind at that show. we were kids drinking outside before the concert. police roll up on us and two of my friends ran. they went after them and one of my friends got arrested. we didn't know if we should go to the show or not. we did end up going but i was stressed out the whole time.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:38 (nine years ago)

so for me The Bubblemen will always be remembered for that crazy night.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:39 (nine years ago)

despite all that, i did not have room on my ballot for them. too much good stuff.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:41 (nine years ago)

Top 20

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 20:55 (nine years ago)

shockingly, this didn't make my ballot either.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

my number two or number one Tones on Tail song.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 21:24 (nine years ago)

i post youtubes every once in a while if there is something cool and not basic.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 21:41 (nine years ago)

the juggernaut that is Earth Sun Moon.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

I'm glad to be reminded of it by this poll. It inspired me to put ESM on again for the first time in a while, and I was happy at how well it holds up. I'm not sure how other people will feel about this, but in terms of general quality and general effect I don't place it all that far from the almost contemporaneous Robyn Hitchcock album Element of Light (another mostly white album cover). Both have this really nice organic classic pop psychedelia thing going on.

dlp9001, Thursday, 31 March 2016 21:59 (nine years ago)

an album i will need to check out.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 22:04 (nine years ago)

two number one votes in a row.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 22:06 (nine years ago)

i have heard saudade played at both a wedding and a funeral.

stirmonster, Thursday, 31 March 2016 22:09 (nine years ago)

Wow, interesting fact.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 22:20 (nine years ago)

the song is really beautiful and really not like anything else they did.

i think only one person voted "Acoustic."

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:02 (nine years ago)

"Ball of Confusion" was released before Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven, but since the USA mix could not be fit on the reissue of that album, it was appended to the Express reissue. Was also on the US release of Express.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:13 (nine years ago)

i like the 12" mix best:
https://youtu.be/OftABUD2bQc

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:14 (nine years ago)

did not know this was the debut single until i did this poll.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:16 (nine years ago)

it was actually the US mix it liked best.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:29 (nine years ago)

Lots of catching up to do.

"Ball Of Confusion" was the first L&R song I heard. I used to really like it, but it's been overplayed for me. Still voted for it though.

"All In My Mind" is a great pop song that just makes me happy.

"So Alive" should be overplayed cause I lived that summer of '89 as a teen but I still like hearing it. I thought L&R fans hated it though, so I'm surprised to see it high.

Happy to see The Bubblemen place. I liked the concept of having a side project as themselves with costumes, as if they didn't have enough side projects already!

LeRooLeRoo, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:33 (nine years ago)

makes me so happy, lol.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

such a great little number, made my ballot.

Bee OK, Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

I forgot about the Bubblemen, glad that made it

the 'major tom guy' (sleeve), Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:42 (nine years ago)

"Time Has Got Nothing to Do With It" is pretty great and made my ballot.

Didn't vote for "Ball Of Confusion" on the grounds of it being a cover, but I'm not sick of it.

Happy to see lots of Tones on Tail even if they're mostly not my picks. And lots of ESM.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Thursday, 31 March 2016 23:50 (nine years ago)

only a couple more for tonight.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 00:10 (nine years ago)

You are disintegrating, onto everything around.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 00:16 (nine years ago)

this song was just outside my Top 10.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 00:21 (nine years ago)

Just rocks. Thought it would be Top 10. Was my #7 or 8 I think.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 00:22 (nine years ago)

Love the exchanging voices during the verse.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 00:24 (nine years ago)

my number 10 ends up being the number 11.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:01 (nine years ago)

The lack of David J songs is making me sad.

Austin, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:05 (nine years ago)

that is it for tonight. Top 10 tomorrow.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:25 (nine years ago)

then the mail poll will start.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:26 (nine years ago)

mail, main

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:50 (nine years ago)

Bauhaus will start tomorrow, can't wait.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 01:51 (nine years ago)

Great list so far. I can only think of 5 or 6 songs that will make the Top 10 for sure, so I can't wait to see the rest.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 03:28 (nine years ago)

I had expected to see "**** (Jungle Law)" by now

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 17:42 (nine years ago)

curve ball, was not expecting this so high.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 17:44 (nine years ago)

Yes! I love it. I had it at number 5.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 17:58 (nine years ago)

such a great song but didn't have room on my ballot.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

I was more surprised by how low "Cuts You Up" was. I guess that's the last Peter Murphy song we're going to see? (x-post)

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 18:05 (nine years ago)

haha, guess we will all find out soon enough.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 18:33 (nine years ago)

no-one specified.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 18:35 (nine years ago)

i do like the longer album version of this song, don't think i have heard the Canada Mix. it did make my ballot.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 18:36 (nine years ago)

Not that different, it starts with more drums.

YES! a song i at first overlooked when putting this ballot together. when i heard it again that changed my mind and it went into my Top 10.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:12 (nine years ago)

two more number ones, in a row not less, are now gone. but we are in the heart of this thing now.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:22 (nine years ago)

sure wish there was an edit feature on ILX.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:24 (nine years ago)

That's my number one! It just has everything I like. The dark vibe, danceable beat, echoey synths, bouncy bass, and spiky guitars. Daniel's voice is great too.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:27 (nine years ago)

It's melody is reminiscent of Kraftwerk's "The Model" and The Human League's "Sound Of The Crowd", two other favorites.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:30 (nine years ago)

Top 5

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:36 (nine years ago)

another one i had to cut from my ballot.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:39 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 19:39 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 20:24 (nine years ago)

Austin, Friday, 1 April 2016 20:24 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 21:05 (nine years ago)

Wow didn't expect this. "Go!" was also my number 2 but I hoped it would take number one in the poll. It's such a blast, unique and brilliant.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 21:11 (nine years ago)

agree, it was my number 5 or my second Tones on Tail number after "OK, This is the Pops."

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 21:17 (nine years ago)

but look at Tones on Tail, taking the Top 2 spots, not bad. they did really, really well in this poll and glad that i got to hear them again because of it.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 21:19 (nine years ago)

So far, I have only voted for "Dancing" - squeaking in at #20 on my ballot - but I am fond of all of these.

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Friday, 1 April 2016 23:33 (nine years ago)

I had "Hope" pretty high on my ballot, #5 I think. It's very different for Bauhaus, kind of hinted at what was coming with Love and Rockets. Although I think I love it more than any L&R songs.
My only vote to show up so far.

LeRooLeRoo, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:40 (nine years ago)

yes, that's right another Mask track.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:45 (nine years ago)

what a way to open that album though.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:46 (nine years ago)

i keep seeing this so i'm going to reprint it: In his retrospective review of the album, Ned Raggett of AllMusic called the album (Mask) "arguably even better than the band's almost flawless debut". Trouser Press described the album as "[Bauhaus'] finest achievement"

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:48 (nine years ago)

i think it's their third best, will get into that as soon as all tracks from The Sky's Gone Out place.

Bee OK, Friday, 1 April 2016 23:52 (nine years ago)

I think it's their 3rd best too, but I place Burning From The Inside second ;-)

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 2 April 2016 00:05 (nine years ago)

can't wait to explain why, it will make sense.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 April 2016 00:09 (nine years ago)

Can I just say it: TOO LOW !

I didn't think "Hope" would be very high, but I thought this genius piece of ghost pirates chanting might be.

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 2 April 2016 00:23 (nine years ago)

^^ I'm also a big Burning From The Inside fan, had a lot of tracks from it on my ballot, 24 is too low for this, I love the guitar as well

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 April 2016 01:27 (nine years ago)

that was fun, great set of songs.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 April 2016 01:35 (nine years ago)

Only had 3 songs place and they were the 3 Burning From The Inside cuts. I do like the other songs though. Peter Murphy is great in "St. Vitus Dance".

LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 2 April 2016 01:47 (nine years ago)

Very curious to see what the rest of the top twenty shapes up like.

Austin, Saturday, 2 April 2016 02:01 (nine years ago)

only Mask did better with four songs already making the Top 30.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 April 2016 02:18 (nine years ago)

I've been watching/listening along in an effort to cure my relative cluelessness re Bauhaus. Thinking Mask in particular sounds like a record I should already have owned for years!

Maximum big surprise! (Nag! Nag! Nag!), Saturday, 2 April 2016 02:30 (nine years ago)

"St. Vitus Dance," "The Spy in the Cab" & "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight" are all top 10 for me. Not a huge fan of "King Volcano," though.

Crowds (#12) was my #11 - from a long-ago era when B-sides were as good - or better - than A-sides

Heiress Too (Dr. Joseph A. Ofalt), Saturday, 2 April 2016 21:33 (nine years ago)

good time to bring this up, the reason why i think The Sky's Gone Out was their best album is because they had their best run. Side 1 is perfect and i knew In the Flat Field didn't need the help.

Third Uncle
Silent Hedges
In the Night
Swing the Heartache
Spirit

all songs made my ballot.

Bee OK, Saturday, 2 April 2016 21:42 (nine years ago)

A bunch of stuff in this run I didn't vote for... I didn't pick any covers -- never fond of "Rosegarden Funeral of Sores" and I prefer Eno's "Third Uncle." "Double Dare" is not a favourite. I don't dislike "Mask," but I didn't vote for it.

"Crowds," "Hollow Hills," "Slice of Life," "Kick in the Eye," "Spirit," and "Silent Hedges" are all great. I like the acoustic stuff from The Sky's Gone Out, but otherwise it's my least favourite of the original 4 LPs (sorry).

xpost - also love "Lagartija Nick."

lingereffect (Kent Burt), Saturday, 2 April 2016 21:56 (nine years ago)

"The Passion of Lovers" was my number 2 -- such a great song. I love the live performance linked above - that whole show from the Old Vic is great.

"She's in Parties" is the 10th single released by British gothic rock band Bauhaus.[1] It was released in 7" and 12" format on the Beggars Banquet label. It was the band's final commercially released single and reached No. 26 in the UK Singles Chart.

Bee OK, Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:16 (nine years ago)

such a great last single, was my number 21. :-)

Bee OK, Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:24 (nine years ago)

i like the album, longer version more, more mysterious.

Bee OK, Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:31 (nine years ago)

It goes dub reggae at the end. Fun!

Austin, Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:32 (nine years ago)

Bee OK, Sunday, 3 April 2016 00:47 (nine years ago)

Didn't vote but those are good results! Thought the Third Uncle uncle was more loved. If I had voted it would've been my number 2 or 3.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 3 April 2016 21:46 (nine years ago)

I'm sad I missed the best part of the poll as it was happening, but I enjoyed catching up with the results just now.

Great Top 5 and I'm happy "Bela" wasn't #1. I love it but I find Bauhaus have done so much more than that first single, which is what they're always know for.

Surprised "Double Dare" wasn't Top 10. To me it represents the core of what Bauhaus was about, musically and lyrically. Amazing opener for a first album and it's also one of the heaviest songs I've ever heard.

I love all the songs in the top 20 except "Rosegarden Funeral" which is ok, but was never a stand out for me.

Shout out to the other person who voted for "The Man With the X-Ray Eyes"!

And thanks again Bee Ok for doing this, I had so much fun relistening to all those fantastic songs and albums. Reminded me how truly amazing and original this band was.

looking at set lists from recent shows, they are only playing Bauhaus songs with no Peter Murphy solo tracks.

you have no idea how much i'm looking forward to today's show. i have never seen Bauhaus since they broke up before i was into music but they became such an important band in my youth. even if that has more to do with Love and Rockets.

So how was it?

Ned Raggett, Monday, 4 November 2019 13:56 (six years ago)

Interesting setlist. Per reports, three of these songs they hadn’t done since the original run (“Spy in the Cab,” “The Man Wirh X-Ray Eyes” and “The Three Shadows Pt 2”) and this is the first time they’ve covered “Sister Midnight,” a very appropriate choice:

“Bauhaus, Hollywood Palladium, Los Angeles, CA, 11/3/19

1. “Rosegarden Funeral of Sores” (John Cale cover)
2. “Double Dare”
3. “In The Flat Field”
4. “A God in an Alcove”
5. “In Fear of Fear”
6. “Spy in the Cab”
7. “Terror Couple Kill Colonel”
8. “Swing the Heartache”
9. “She’s In Parties”
10. “Bela Lugosi’s Dead”
11. “Kick In The Eye”
12. “The Man With the X-Ray Eyes”
13. “Stigmata Martyr”
14. “Silent Hedges”

my setlist was the same as what Ned posted from the night before but they also included "The Passion of Lovers" at last nights show. Automatic was the opening band and they are three women that are trying their best to be Stereolab but they were cool. the audience in Hollywood last night was older, they really didn't bring out the kids to the show, felt like i was seeing Neil Young or something. the band was very tight and felt like they have been playing on the road for months, hard to believe that this was only the second show. Peter Murphy didn't have any ill effects from his recent heart attack and sounded really, really good. they never said a word all night they just played their songs. first and probably last time i will see Bauhaus and it was a fun night. i was more of a Love and Rockets person, though over time i realize that Bauhaus was more of a statement band. i just identify with Love and Rockets more.

the winner of this very poll and i finally got to see it live:

it was sort of fitting that a David Bowie song ended the night, it's towers above all else:

for me being sent home for work has lead me down a rabbit hole of listening to songs on YouTube. music wise i'm having such a good time but life is just such a mess right now. anyways, this rabbit hole has lead me to this song right now:

it has been just about a year ago that i saw Bauhaus for the first time in my life. now it seems it might be the last show i ever see? i hope not, but sort of ironic as i was too young to see them when they played together originally. in fact i probably didn't even know who they were until well after their breakup.

fun read and good reason to bump our poll:

David J's book is lovely and funny. Saw them in 2005 in Chicago, would go again in a heartbeat if they ever come back this way. Saudade is a personal fave.

Because they sort of copied my title (5 Motorcycles I Can’t Live Without: Daniel Ash of Bauhaus/Love and Rockets/Tones On Tail) or really just a sad excuse for a bump:
