ILM's 2016 End of Year Albums & Tracks Poll / NOMINATIONS THREAD

Welcome to the 2016 edition of our annual year-end poll!

We're sticking with the max of 30 nominations since that worked out well the previous four years. You can split that down with middle with 15 albums and 15 tracks, or you can break down that number in any way that satisfies you (all albums, all tracks, or any other split that adds up to 30). Things to keep in mind when you nominate, especially if you don't do it all at once:

Label your ALBUMS nominations and your TRACKS nominations. gr80, seandalai and I hear a whole bunch of music, but we're not familiar with everything. This helps us out a great deal.

Format your nominations in this order:
Artist - Album
Artist - Track
({B]ALWAYS[/B] artist first. NEVER Album - Artist or Track - Artist... not only is this an archivist's nightmare, but it's also harder on us when trying to make a proper nominations list.)

So, now nominations are open! They will close at 7pm EST on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 (that's midnight for the Britishes and 4pm for our friends on the left coast of the US). Shortly thereafter, the voting thread will appear as if by magic.

Please ctrl+f the thread or check the spreadsheets linked below before submitting your nominations. We may not catch all the doubles that pop up, but we try.

My instinctive reaction is "no", given our (admittedly controversial) practice of summing votes for remixes of the same track in a year. Happy to hear other opinions though.

If a track didn't make the top 77 last year then a remix is definitely eligible this year.

This year sucked for everybody, and I don't feel like fighting over minutiae. If that remix made people happy in 2016, vote for it when voting time comes. If it makes the countdown, congrats!

But it's up to y'all.

Spotify is used by more people in more countries than Tidal, so it's the service of choice for this process. Vimeo is a superior platform to Youtube, but Youtube's use is so widespread (and it has a bigger catalog, so it's a no-brainer).

I finally picked some track for my Village Voice ballot. I shot my wad on the albums, but here's a few comments in case anyone else wants to consider these:

Syd Arthur - Sun Rays
The bittersweet “Sun Rays” has very simple lyrics that takes flight with the transcendent music. The single was released in the summer and has since made appearances in my dreams, and live makes the heart soar. What more can you ask for?

Wolf People - Night Witch
Despite it’s release as a single on Halloween, “Night Witch” is not a spooky horror pastiche, but rather a powerful tale about the Nachthexen, the female Soviet aviators of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment who terrorized the Nazis in WW II. The Germans nicknamed them the “Night Witches” because their Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes would glide in idling toward the bomb release point, with only the sound of wind to give them away, sounding like broomsticks.

Lola Colt - Twist Through The Fire
The 9:40 long title track that builds slowly from a flickering flame to a raging fire, while vocalist Gun Overbye snake dances through it, the band locking into an incessant motorik beat. As it cools off, there’s even some icey synths giving a nod to Kraftwerk without sounding out of place. Magnificent.

Wovenhand - Golden Blossom
“Golden Blossom” finds Edwards sounding positively jubilant. Whether it’s simply a love song, or about joining a lover in the afterlife, it really is uplifting, which is no small feat.

The Drones - Taman Shud
“Taman Shud,” is full of surprising stop-start rhythms, and seethes with lefty political rage that hearkens back to the Angry Penguins, a 1940s movement that repudiated an early Australian nationalism.

Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band - High Castle Rock
A sort of successor to the masterclass in ascension, “Marquee Moon.”

"Taman Shud"'s rage is a renewable energy source

it's an album length piece of work, you need to make more of an albumy sort of effort to listen to it. reminds me a lot of the necks and their long single track works are definitely albums too.

i don't feel particularly miltant about it either way though

25 minutes hasn't been "album length" since the CD era began, more like an EP or a long single. Since then there's plenty of experimental/ambient/etc acts who've released albums with just one track, but typically they last at least 45 minutes.

thought it would free up our hands to nominate more personal/obscure stuff not represented on other lists if we, for example, copy/pasted the Thread for all 2016 albums of the year lists thread in here and then ppl could just ctrl+F over noms + listed stuff. enthusiasm for the whole enterprise seems to be drying up, last year's Tracks thread had >2000 fewer posts than the previous year. however, i also respect the sacredness of the nominations process and it probably has some effect in making the ilm list a bit more idiosyncratic and constrained/communal

ok 'free up our hands' point taken but i really don't think we should be giving these other organisations any sort of curatorial recognition, on principle. it's probably a parochial and badly thought-through principle but with up to 40 nominations per person we really ought to be able to come up with a sufficiently broad spectrum. functionally, most of the albums and tracks on the lists make it in anyway but with limitations come the need to think harder about what you wish to represent, which i think is healthy and idk, it just feels like giving these organisations that sort of authority is to enshrine them, place their choices above those of the regular hardworking ilxor

There are a lot of records listed already, if the others ones don't make it, they weren't good enough. They can live another time, to be discovered by a future digger rifling through the racks in the basement of Sea World

I've thought about the copy/paste idea before but people get some performative satisfaction out of nominating, the nomination thread by itself yields some discussion of/draws attention to releases people had missed.

JF usually comes around with an extra 10 or so surprise nominations later on iirc

less than a week in and with over two weeks to go, we've got about 500 singles nominated and roughly as many albums
it's pretty diverse already! I tend to enjoy the hype thread; good way to find lotsa winners.
Finding a ton of good stuff just cataloguing... that King Bubba dancehall track is v v fun

i usually wait until the last moment to NOM, so that's prob why i was surprised by how many consensus picks i had to self-nom

25 minutes hasn't been "album length" since the CD era began, more like an EP or a long single. Since then there's plenty of experimental/ambient/etc acts who've released albums with just one track, but typically they last at least 45 minutes.

The ways of Aphex Twin are mysterious and wholly uninteresting to me, but looking at this thing on Discogs, I see the Houston, TX... thing is the name of the 12" itself and each side goes by the name "no stillson 6 cirk." If you'd like to nominate one of the sides as a track for this poll's purposes, please do. It was made clear that it is a single - but it was not made clear that it is a track, because it isn't a track. I looked! I saw a track and i thought are there is a track! And then I looked more closely, and behind the track - there was another track! I missed it at first too, and Aphex Twin is known for japes after all, but this takes the biscut - he is trying to sneak TWO tracks onto the tracks poll in just one nomination. Personally I think he should concentrate more on the music than this kind of conceptual pranksterism and thats why I dont listen to his music

Eh? According to Discogs it's 44 minutes, which was a normal album length back then. 24 minutes is not album-length in 2016, especially not in jazz music.

Well, yeah, that one's more like the Gorguts example. I just enjoyed imagining an "album or track" debate there. The Aphex Twin question seems to be about whether two-sided 12" singles/EPs belong in the albums poll, since it's clearly not just one track.

EPs have always been considered albums, and tracks as, uh, tracks. I can't think off the top of my head what the longest track we've ever 77'd was, maybe Destroyer's "The Laziest River"? Lambchop's "The Hustle" stands a shot of getting in this year and that's around 18 minutes iirc

So is there a consensus whether 25m 1-track EP's like Blackened Cities are albums or tracks?

I'm of the opinion that any stand alone track longer that In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida (17.04) is at least an EP.
Also that anything with clear track divisions is not, by definition, a single.

So, personally, I would call the longest playlist singles of De Biasio (24.16), Meindert Talma (22.02) albums, as they are individually packaged, untracked songs that break the Iron Butterfly rule. But as a for instance, "Kuiper" (18.23) is part of Floating Points Kuiper Part 1&2... so it's a single! But the two track Aphex EP clearly is NOT a single... it's two singles on an EP! So nominate each song as singles or nominate the whole thing as an "album".

Which is to say, if it's not a 17 minute or shorter track, it's an album.

i've nominated a 21-minute standalone track as a track and will vote for it as a track. the same artist has since released an 18-minute standalone track and i might nominate and vote for it as a track as well. both are obviously individual tracks, even if also packaged as EPs. they're single discrete and cogent entities of music, indivisible.

According to the RIAA who we love, an EP is defined as containing three to five songs or under 30 minutes.
