Ballot: http://goo.gl/forms/NslNEoxWlZUCjn7Q2

The procedure is simple: enter your tracks and album ballots (up to 25 items on each), one item per line, in the appropriate fields below. Please copy each line directly from the nominations lists; do not number your ballot. You can choose one of three ballot types, which determine how points are allocated to each item you vote for:

(1) Weighted: The first item on your ballot receives 50 points, the second receives 48 points, and so on, until the 25th item receives 2 points.

(2) Unweighted: Each item on your ballot receives 26 points.

(3) Mixed: To submit a mixed ballot, you must divide your ballot in two with an extra blank line. The upper portion of the ballot will be treated as weighted, with the first item receiving 50 points, and so on. The lower portion will be treated as unweighted, in that all items will receive the same number of points. The score allocated to items in the unweighted portion is calculated as 26 minus the number of items in the weighted portion (this is so that any weighted, unweighted or mixed ballot consisting of 25 items will allocate a total of exactly 650 points).

I've spotted a few doubles in the albums list:

Aurora - All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend
bent knee - say so
steve lehman - selebeyone

Aurora - All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend
Aurora Aksnes - All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend

That's the only one that would throw off tabulation, I suspect. So y'all pick one and go with it.

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 03:04 (nine years ago)

wanna take this opportunity to rep for the Sarah Louise album linked above, it's not on Spotify but u can stream it all on Bandcamp and it is one of my favorite solo guitar records of the year, and exceptionally strong and distinctive and fully formed for what I think is a debut

sleeve, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 03:10 (nine years ago)

Just some quick metrics on wrapping up this king hell OCD project:

Spotify singles playlist is 1206 songs and 90 1/2 hours long; YouTube singles playlist is 103 songs; 21 loose singles available elsewhere.

Spotify album playlist is 9863 songs and 741+ hours long; YouTube album playlist is 474 songs; another 98 or so albums available elsewhere.

It's a brave new world.

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 03:12 (nine years ago)

And yes, we should use this thread for recommendation, stanning and general conversation!

A big shout out goes to the lamb chops, thos lamb chops (ulysses), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 03:12 (nine years ago)

Can this also be the thread where I admit that I forgot to nominate some of my favourite albums? I'm gutted that I had lots of nominations left and still forgot to nominate Corrine Bailey Rae. Same goes for the All Saints album.

Kitchen Person, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 04:13 (nine years ago)

I only ended up using 13 nominations myself, and I'm one of the runners.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 04:29 (nine years ago)

I'm 100% tempted to vote for Quttinirpaaq again >:{D

U2 (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 05:00 (nine years ago)

there's a lot of stuff i want to recommend but i guess i should start with my favorite k-pop song of the year, "galaxy" by ladies' code https://youtu.be/hcgT1eq3CLM

who is extremely unqualified to review this pop album (BradNelson), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 05:17 (nine years ago)

Wait why is Wet - You're the Best and The Internet - Girl in the noms? These are mid 2015 and I loved them but I think I voted for that last year.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 06:25 (nine years ago)

Also I thought I saw The Avalanches - I wish I was a folkstar in the noms and apparently it's not there... a shame I would have nommed it completely oversaw that one... best song in the album imho. Will have to pick another one.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 06:27 (nine years ago)

I think this might be the third (fourth?) year in a row I see Shura - Touch on the noms. We keep trying to make it happen and it never gets anywhere... I think I put it in my top 3 last year... going for What's It Gonna Be? this year... maybe it does better.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 06:33 (nine years ago)

i nominated "girl" because i first heard it in (spring) 2016 when it had a brief/modest run on r&b radio.

dyl, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 06:56 (nine years ago)

"year of impact" etc

dyl, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 06:57 (nine years ago)

Ah! I would have voted for it but it was hard enough as it is.... had to narrow down from 75 songs.

dance cum rituals (Moka), Wednesday, 4 January 2017 07:22 (nine years ago)

Ulysses, your list of tracks not in Spotify or Youtube doesn't include Thomas P. Heckmann's "Astraphobia", which I nominated... So here's a link to it:

https://thomaspheckmann.bandcamp.com/track/astraphobia

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 07:48 (nine years ago)

The tracks list also includes Nao's "Bad Blood", which I nominated for the 2015 poll... But I think that's okay according to the rules, cos it didn't place then? And it was included on Nao's album, which came out in 2016.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 07:51 (nine years ago)

Also, Aphex Twin's "Houston, TX 12.17.16" is still included in the albums list, even though it was determined in the nomination thread that it's a 12-inch single.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 08:35 (nine years ago)

it's in the tracks list as 'Aphex Twin - no stillson 6 cirk mix2'

ufo, Wednesday, 4 January 2017 08:41 (nine years ago)

Can this also be the thread where I admit that I forgot to nominate some of my favourite albums? I'm gutted that I had lots of nominations left and still forgot to nominate Corrine Bailey Rae. Same goes for the All Saints album.

I didn't want the other track to be nominated only this one.

Yeah, I was putting my album list together from the final list and just assumed it had been nominated. Two of the KING related songs were picked (one of them by me!) but the album was sadly overlooked. I would have definitely given it some votes. It's a lovely record.

Unless I missed it, I didn't see any mention of the brilliant album by Cellars anywhere. The lead single, Nighttime Girl could well be my favourite song of the year. It's pure earworm and the harmonies on the wordless chorus are everything I love about pop music. https://youtu.be/yPCCioS75jY

Bombino - Timtar
A new discovery for the year. Psychedelic Tuareg goodness. Not dissimilar from Tinariwen, but with a fat, almost reggae-ish lope. Absolutely fantastic

Double Britney too ('Slumber Party' twice) which means I was wrong upthread and she only has a mere 5 tracks (yet somehow none of them are 'Clumsy' or 'Hard To Forget Ya' dam, best from her since 'Blackout' for sure)

Yeah, I was putting my album list together from the final list and just assumed it had been nominated. Two of the KING related songs were picked (one of them by me!) but the album was sadly overlooked. I would have definitely given it some votes. It's a lovely record.

I guess I could rep on the album I think no one else but me will vote, here's the title track:

Zalys - Fragments of Life

Zalys has made several albums of this kind of deep, droney space ambient, and her new one is not that different from the previous outout, maybe a bit darker... But if you like these kind of beatless, glacial & melody-free cosmic moodz, her music should certainly hit the sweet spot, so it's all good.

Gate's 'Saturday Night Fever' (from The Dead C's Michael Morley) deserves way more love than it is getting. A twisted, fractured, mutant take on the disco classic, all chopped up to pieces. Listen to Hijack, which sounds like Third Eye Foundation with Ian Curtis on vocals and William Basinski behind the wheel.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 January 2017 18:54 (nine years ago)

Biggest discoveries from the nominated albums list for me so far.

Japanese Breakfast - Psychopomp (this is everything I want from indie music in 2017)
Bartosz Kruczynski - Baltic Beat (the title track is one of the most beautiful songs I've heard in a long time)
Noname - Telefone (not sure why it took me so long to give this a listen. Amazing production and she has so much personality)
Ngaiire - Blastoma (every year I discover something great that Monotony has recommended. It's a been a good year for mellow R&B)
Mitski - Puberty 2 (this didn't blow me away when I heard it earlier in the year, but hearing all the excellent songs on the playlist made me reconsider. Love it now)

I won't list the songs as I've been through the playlist and found around 80 songs that I'd never heard before that could all make my final tracks list. I always forget what hard work this is.

Kitchen Person, Thursday, 5 January 2017 19:04 (nine years ago)

I have to rep for Mogwai - Atomic. Their last few albums have been lackluster IMO, but this one is amazing. It runs the gamut from old school post-rock to dark synth prog. Very much worth a vote!

Another album I gotta stan for is Comet Control - Center of the Maze... It's kind of hard to describe. I'd say that it's upbeat psych-pop pretending to be heavy metal. The last track of the album, Artificial Light is especially good and was nominated.

As far as pop music goes, most of the stuff I liked this year is already well known to ILM ppl (Angel Olsen, Mitski, Tegan & Sara), but I never see Amason talked about much and they released one of my favorite tracks of the year, Airport. It has great female-fronted vocals and is extremely catchy. I've listened to it probably almost 100 times this year and it still hasn't gotten old.

Another cool track that I think is a bit obscure is Black Marble - Iron Lung. Really solid indie pop that has a New Order vibe. Another track I should mention is The Ravonettes - Where Are You Wild Horses. They did this thing where they released a new track every month in 2016, and that one is easily the best of them. I really like it.

I'll let imago evangelize for Mesarthim but they are also great: they're very much metal that people who aren't into metal will like.

OK that's my big campaigning post. I might mention more stuff later, but I really wanted to makes sure the above mentioned got some attention.

i don't have the energy to stump hard for these albums but here are 3 that will almost certainly top my list that ilxors in general maybe least likely to know?

Dori Freeman - Dori Freeman: beautiful appalachian americana about longing (youtube video of opener 'you say'
A-WA - Habib Galbi: 3 israeli sisters (incidentally w/ the last name haim) mix heritage yemenite music w/ electronic + hip-hop influences (youtube music video for 'habib galbi' first Arabic song to go #1 on israeli pop charts)
Noura Mint Seymali - Arbina: amazing singer from Mauritania does Moorish pop w/ her husband on guitars and it's blissful psych desert-blues ('Na Sane' music video)

If I'm going to campaign for one underheard thing this year, it will be Sidibe's mini-LP 'You Got the Luck'. 7 tracks of glorious 80s/90s style pop/r&b from a singer whose voice reminds me at times of Carly Rae and whose musical inclinations draw from Janet and Sade.

I have a theory about Barli, and it's that she previously recorded under the name Ruby Goe, but there are a couple reasons I don't want to state that as fact...

All of Ruby Goe's previous internet presence has been wiped (except for tracks on streaming services).

I'll the the one to rep for:

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith and Suzanne Ciani - Sunergy (she worships synthesisers by the sea shore)

Wednesday Campanella - Aladdin (Thriller x Freestyle x J-Pop)
Poli Genova - If Love Was a Crime (Bulgaria's Eurovision Entry, Europop with BIG FLUTE BREAK)

I saw Pekler’s music described not as “ambient electronic” but as “abstract electronic” and I can’t think of a better descriptor. It’s a broken soundscape that feels vaguely familiar while never settling into place. It’s like a video game with bad draw-in problems; paths and surroundings shift and appear from nothing, are granted solidity, and they fade back to grey mist. Tristes Tropiques is another album I would have given time nor attention to before this year. With a constantly changing present it pulls the attention to the now. No prediction is safe or right or true.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 January 2017 01:50 (nine years ago)

I used to love Pekler's Sad Rockets jazz project, but I haven't listened to him in 15 years, could check this one out.

I love that Hazel English track. My friend Adam went to see her show a few weeks ago and said she was the tiniest person he's ever seen.

i agree that listing "2 Bad" at the top of the RA poll puts too much of a spotlight on it, but I don't think in general they rep for tracks that could be described as anthems, do they? I really liked the whole 28 min EP that it's from, 2 The Sky

I will limit my stumping to Jeff Rosenstock's WORRY, which I should emphasize will definitely not be of any interest to those w/ no patience for pop-punk and/or rock music generally. It inspired me, for better or (likely) worse, to try and make music for the first time in a decade. You can read lots of words about it in lots of places but you're better off just downloading it (donation/PWYC) from his label.

The new Biosphere album is really good, but I'm sure you already know about that. Besides that, the two Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith albums, and the Zalys cosmic drone album I mentioned upthread, this was my favourite ambient record of the year:

https://virtual1.bandcamp.com/album/uvunayatu

Omni Vu Deity is an alias for Ishq for their "4th world" project, but this isn't some corny "ethno techno" music a la Deep Forest, just some good use of percussion and well-chosen samples besides their typical brand of colourful ambient pads. Lovely stuff, IMO.

Putting my ballot together and noticed that the Stabil Elite album is down as Let You Down whereas it's actually called Spumante.

Do I just vote for it as it is on the master list?

groovypanda, Thursday, 19 January 2017 09:51 (nine years ago)

It's pretty unlikely to crack the top 77 if no one's noticed until now, so you might as well just vote for it as it is.

Kinda weird two of the most popular and discussed songs of the year were missing from the songs ballot: David Bowie's Blackstar and Radiohead's True Love Waits. Would have voted for both with the former in my top 5.

octobeard, Friday, 20 January 2017 09:52 (nine years ago)

Actually the more I think about it, Blackstar (the song) would have been my #1. One of Bowie's best songs ever, perfectly fits in the context of the year, especially the mood. Tis a pity

octobeard, Friday, 20 January 2017 09:55 (nine years ago)

I read about Frankie Sinatra in the avalanches thread before ever hearing. Based on the reactions in that thread I was expecting way worse. I was pleasantly surprised that it's an ok song and I don't skip it when listening to the album. I nominated and voted for "Because I'm me", which I wonder if other people listen to much if they hate Frankie Sinatra so much because they probably always start the album at Subways.

why do people gate Frankie Sinatra? album only gets started at that point. is it because it has trace amounts of hippie-ska in there? I think it's fun and kinda masterful in how they cut up Wilmot's vocal in the way they did. I probably would have voted it.

The sample on 'Frankie Sinatra' is great. Pretty sure the reasons for disliking it are too do with everything else about it (reminding people who don't like Gorillaz of Gorillaz etc.).

nashwan, Friday, 20 January 2017 20:12 (nine years ago)

I don't hate the track, but the beat is very plodding and circus-y compared to the rest of the album. I also find Danny Brown's verses to be pretty grating. I like the MF Doom verse.

The rest of the album is so easy going and groovy, makes Frankie Sinatra feel misplaced, but I'll still listen to it once in a while.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Friday, 20 January 2017 20:21 (nine years ago)

why do people gate Frankie Sinatra?

I assume you mean "hate" and it's because it's a terrible song that makes "The Salmon Dance" sound like the greatest party jam ever recorded.

Sorry to hear that emil.y. :( agreed with the above - there's always something totally great and unknown on your ballot.

"Frankie Sinatra" veers perilously close to electroswing which is imo the worst genre in the history of music

marcos, Friday, 20 January 2017 21:47 (nine years ago)

For me, Frankie Sinatra reminds me more of Eminem's "Comedy" singles than Gorillaz or Electroswing, which is a sound I can do without. In particular, it reminds me of Obie Trice's "Got Some Teeth".

MarkoP, Friday, 20 January 2017 21:49 (nine years ago)

octobeard, Saturday, 21 January 2017 05:48 (nine years ago)

well, i've been pretty out of things here lately, so i'm glad i happened to look tonight and saw that the deadline was like right now and threw together a ballot. of course, i didn't participate in nominations, so i had to hunt through my top 40 tracks/albums to get enough to fill out the ballot, but i guess that just means i voted for some things other people voted for. glad i stopped by tonight, would've hated to break my streak of voting every year!

a little late because of a work crisis and a wine situation but I've submitted a ballot if it's not too late to consider

Sorry to be a humourless twat, but can someone please walk me through the Gaz Coombes joke? I've been vaguely puzzled at it for a year or so. Is it just "lolz indie music"?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 22 January 2017 14:48 (nine years ago)

"joke"?

Jeff W, Sunday, 22 January 2017 15:14 (nine years ago)

I never understood it either.

Tuomas, Sunday, 22 January 2017 19:16 (nine years ago)

No joke at all.

Noodle Vague was just a very big fan of Supergrass and he is the cousin of the singer - Gaz Coombes.

hard to convince anyone that the year bowie, prince, and leonard cohen died is the best year for music ever, no matter how many great albums came out.
