Help me identify the cover artwork on this wall I found in a photo of a bedroom on a property website.

I have so many questions, this is kinda baffling to me, I was browsing a property website and came across this a shot of a bedroom.

Are these paintings or actual twelves? What is going on with the selection? Los Lobos, Crises by Mike Oldfield and the single artwork for Happy Birthday by Altered Images?

I don't even recognise half of them, save my sanity.

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:00 (eight years ago)

It's bothering me what the one in the top left is and whether they cut it to go round the ceiling coving (argh!)

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:16 (eight years ago)

(a) I think these are all hand painted facsimiles, and
(b) the sleeve above Barclay James Harvest is Dire Straits' "So Far Away" single, and why do I care?

attention vampire (MatthewK), Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:33 (eight years ago)

Oh, good spot (a and b). It actually was puzzling me that the ratios didn't look quite right on the Oldfield but I thought it was either a different issue with tweaked artwork or something to do with estate agents' magical camera lenses distorting to make horizontal space look much bigger than it really is

I might have been thinking about this too much and should go to bed

though apparently I wasn't thinking about it enough to notice that both Crises and the one in the top-left were listed in MaresNest's opening post: 1. is "the single artwork for Happy Birthday by Altered Images"

a passing spacecadet, Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:42 (eight years ago)

If they are painted facsimiles, that would explain why the Paul Simon album looks so weird... In all the versions of the cover I've seen, the image of the horseback rider is much smaller and in the middle of a large white area, but there's no white here.

I think these covers were chosen because they all have colourful painted/drawn visuals, and no photos, not because they represent someone's musical taste. Makes sense to pick covers like these if they are indeed handmade facsimiles.

Not completely. Being "painted" versions, they are a little different. Have to say, "Urban Hymns" would not really belong in this collection, so I'm entirely sanguine about it being something else. Then again, Badly Drawn Boy also sticks out as being unlikely, but there it is.

I decided that the white blobs in the upper left said Al Hirt, and that the main graphic was 45 labels made to look like hot air balloons. Then I found that Al Hirt had released a medley of "We Can Fly" and "Up Up and Away" as a single, so I went through every Al Hirt album compilation and then album cover on Discogs. No such luck.

GIS interpreted it as a poster but once I changed the term to album I spotted the Four Year Strong record and immediately thought 'wow so close, it actually has the right colours letters at the end of the words but too different a font - maybe they have an alternative similar cover for it' - after a few more minutes realised the roboshark in the top right was a perfect shape match.

Then I got cocky and tried to do the same for the one under Badly Drawn Boy but the only thing coming up anywhere close is this Pentangle record.

It looks like Bruce Springsteen's Lucky Town at 7 and (educated guess here) Human Touch at 6. Number 5 looks like Garth Brooks' Ropin' the Wind. The Springsteen albums came out in March 1992 and that Brooks album in September 1991. Def Leppard's Adrenalize is probably in here somewhere.

That would push us into the end of April '92. But I also thought 12 might match the middle display on the wall at the back (similar black-on-red lettering) and I think that might be something else so maybe 12 is too.

So, I was wondering about the black and white album rear cover that is propped up behind the DJ (it's a still from 'That Thing You Do' btw) it doesn't look like a 60s record, kinda looks like the back of a John Hiatt record from 1985 or something, any clues?

Maresn3st, Friday, 13 March 2020 20:32 (five years ago)

haha yeah that definitely does not look like an early 60s record!

Οὖτις, Friday, 13 March 2020 20:33 (five years ago)

Yeah, which is maybe why they turned it around, but considering the insane amount of period detail in the movie it's funny.

Many adorable things about that photo, but I especially love the janky-ass Ikea unit with the components on a shelf befitting sitting on the floor to listen to records. Like he got the lease suddenly, and bought the shelves from the previous occupant so as to start spinning records ASAP, and still hasn't gotten around to buying a chair. Landlord window treatments. I like to think of Plant having a little barebones pied-a-terre with nothing but stacks of records and an electric kettle.

Twitter's dying, it's time for some real content.

So I came in to to living room to find Dad watching Only Fools and Horses with the sound off and pausing it at random frames.

I didn't cheat and look at any of the replies. Very top is Flash Fearless vs. the Zorg Women. I actually own this record.

In the walkthrough for this house for sale, in Glastonbury no less, there are silver and gold records on the wall, you can see them at 1'41". There is also a caricature of a guitarist on a shelf space and the records on the wall seem to have been released on Chrysalis, but the covers and small and kinda blurry. Let's figure this one out.

So it's B3n3dict House, which is a B&B (or at least has been) - https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g186373-d4327335-Reviews-Benedict_House_B_B-Glastonbury_Somerset_England.html

Reviews mention "Chrissy and David", but the most recent one is from 2016 so maybe they sold it to the Chrysalis Records veteran?

faust sofa (Matt #2), Sunday, 27 August 2023 11:43 (one year ago)

Last sold in October 2015 if I’m reading the land registry right, so change of owners round then is plausible.
The Golden Apple gallery is attached but there’s little info online about it.

woof, Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:06 (one year ago)

That said there are little square boxes of tissues on bedside tables in both the tripadvisor and estate agent pics so maybe there is continuity there, despite the absence of ornamental dragons in the TA pics.

woof, Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:17 (one year ago)

Browsing through Chrysalis' discography and I'm wondering if it could be Ian Anderson?

emil.y, Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:23 (one year ago)

Way too small, he has a stone cottage somewhere in its own grounds I think

faust sofa (Matt #2), Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:33 (one year ago)

I reckon it is a member of Steeleye Span, two of the covers next to each other look like Parcel of Rogues and All Around my Hat

MaresNest, Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:56 (one year ago)

There doesn't seem to be any sort of music practice space in the house - no instruments around. Is it more likely to be a producer, manager, executive?

woof, Sunday, 27 August 2023 12:59 (one year ago)

Could easily be yes, or a studio engineer

btw something that's kinda weird about the original pic in this thread - that copy of Equinoxe by Jarre is not the original cover, in fact it's not any cover, that's the cover to the Equinoxe 5 single. however that cover only appeared as a 7" single, none of the 12s had a cover at all, also the font on it looks a little wacky, leading me to believe that maybe it's actually a print out? despite the album itself being incredibly available?

frogbs, Monday, 14 April 2025 22:35 (two months ago)

the albums in that photo look too big to be actual albums.

visiting, Monday, 14 April 2025 22:39 (two months ago)

I was wondering if that was the case, it kind of scales with the bookcase but the bed and dresser would have to be unusually small I guess

that makes it a bit stranger though since so many of the albums up there are bargain bin picks, although I've never seen We Can't Dance on vinyl, even if the three before are plenty ubiquitous

so its almost like they just printed off random album covers to decorate the wall

I think these covers were chosen because they all have colourful painted/drawn visuals, and no photos, not because they represent someone's musical taste. Makes sense to pick covers like these if they are indeed handmade facsimiles.

The proportions also get funkier as you move to the images on the far right, they are wider than they are tall.

This is a still from the Netflix show The Four Seasons. It's clearly a mock-up as no Joy Division LP, official or unofficial, ever had a cover like this. My question is why would they go to the trouble of making a mock-up? Why not show an actual cover?

xpost all the album covers for that show are probably mockups (copyright reasons?) - the Modest Mouse fans have the exact same question on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/ModestMouse/s/Asoz3s5kSe

StanM, Wednesday, 25 June 2025 08:33 (three days ago)

I get that but I don't get why showing a real LP cover on a TV show would be a copyright violation?

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Wednesday, 25 June 2025 08:46 (three days ago)

I mean Stewart Lee isn't rushing to cover up his Kraftwerk covers for fear of being sued for copyright

bored by endless ecstasy (anagram), Wednesday, 25 June 2025 08:48 (three days ago)

if you show a real LP cover on TV you need to pay for the image. Cheaper to use some AI-gen mockup.
