Thank you to everyone who participated in our nomination process. We have accumulated 475 sad, sad emo albums (and pop-punk, ska - not much of that - and other sundry mall rock classics) for this poll.

You have 30 votes for your ballots. Please copy/paste directly from the list. I've hopefully weeded out all duplicates.

Fill out your ballot on a standard email body and email it to ilxemopoll AT gmail DOT com by Sunday, March 5th.

neither Juno album is on Spotify or Bandcamp (which I find weird for a few reasons) and afaik can only be heard via these youtube playlists, only the first of which actually contains the entire album

i can't imagine these albums need me to campaign for them however i consider them not only the pinnacle of the genre but among the greatest albums ever made and any one who hasn't heard either should listen to both:

deja entendu
war all the time

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 17:50 (eight years ago)

Oh man, this is going to be fun.

I spotted one duplicate: Letterbox is listed twice, once for 'Brandston', once for 'Brandtson'.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)

What do they sound like?

Okara = mathy/dissonant/trebly/lo-fi; less screaming on Months Like Years

xp

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 17:53 (eight years ago)

Listening to a lot of these nominations is a weird experience for me. I get to relive both what drew me to some of this music as a teenager and also what pushed me away.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 18:04 (eight years ago)

(I'm going for the most emo post.)

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 18:04 (eight years ago)

Speaking of which, I'll finally be able to properly digitize the 1996 emo cassette I played on after my USB tape deck arrives in the next week or two, lol.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 18:09 (eight years ago)

Since I'm not sure how well-known The Appleseed Cast is around here, I just want to give a shout out to their masterpiece(s), Low Level Owl. It's like the title track of SDRE's Rising Tide stretched to two hours. It has everything. For everyone. It's that good.

Vol. 1

Vol. 2

Yeah I get this, for example Thursday are a band I used to absolutely love but had stopped listening to by my early twenties, and I don't know whether I can face going "back there."

ultros ultros-ghali, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:18 (eight years ago)

i must just have very high tolerance for going back in time. i've seen thursday and dashboard both live this year and loved both shows unapologetically

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:20 (eight years ago)

feel like there's a lot of continuity between late-'90s emo (texas is the reason et al) and popular mid-2000s emo in armor for sleep's dream to make believe

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:38 (eight years ago)

ok I'm gonna make my Juno pitch and then shut up about it

This is the Way it Goes and Goes and Goes
I think a lot of us go through that phase when we're young and we want things that are just ours. That's why I spent a lot of my adolescence listening to british bands no one else around me gave a fuck about or had even heard of. In the same way, Juno were an obvious band for me to latch onto because even at the time (the late 90s / early aughts) it didn't seem like they were getting the shine of other bands in their orbit (most obviously the Dismemberment Plan, with whom they split a 7-inch [their half was better imo]). Anyway, TITWIGAGAG still sounds fresh and dynamic to me thousands of listens later. The way "All Your Friends are Comedians" (and of the best singles post-hardcore ever produced) shifts back and forth from 6/8 to 4/4 without a halt in intensity always amazes me. No other band (with one possible exception) ever used three guitarists with greater ingenuity and grace - listen to the overlapping melodies and tones in "The Great Salt Lake." No other band combined the dynamics of post-rock ("Leave a Clean Camp...", "January Arms") with an emo feel more convincingly. I named my first college radio show after "A Listening Ear." As a now 30-year-old miserable basement fuckboy this is still completely my shit.

Sample tracks: "All Your Friends are Comedians," "The Great Salt Lake," "The Young Influentials"

A Future Lived in Past Tense
"Kitchen sink final albums" are one of my favorite kinds (see also: Young Machetes). In another thread, we were discussing how when you're young and impressionable, you're especially vulnerable to the whims of tastemakers, and I remember Pitchfork's middling review (basically slamming it for being too indulgent) causing me a lot of angst. I think this must have been one of the first albums I loved *for* its flaws and not in spite of them. The ludicrous song titles, the beyond-cryptic lyrics and even more anguished vocals, the glacially paced songs - I still love it all. The harmonic details are still completely ridiculous, now aided by Nate Mendel (SDRE, the Foos) on bass, and again what really impresses me is the fluidity of the songwriting and performances. Despite the many genres being touched on (now with an added 70s grandiosity) nothing feels artificially synthesized. This is one of those records you don't come back from after making, so I was the opposite of surprised when they split afterwards. I'm still angry that it's impossible to buy either of these albums on vinyl for less than three figures.

Sample tracks: "Covered With Hair," "Help is on the Way," "The Trail of Your Blood in the Snow"

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 18:53 (eight years ago)

Simon completely otm.

No other band (with one possible exception)
Sonic Youth?

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:58 (eight years ago)

My picks for A Future Lived would be "When I Was in ______" and "We Slept in Rented Rooms" btw

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 18:59 (eight years ago)

I was actually thinking of R*diohead there but right after I wrote it I knew I'd regret it lol

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:02 (eight years ago)

I thought you meant the Allman Brothers.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:09 (eight years ago)

Seriously, that's some review. I'll listen to more Juno, for sure.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

This is the first ILM poll I've been part of. Do people usually pitch for some/all of their nominations?

I want to change my display name (dan m), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:22 (eight years ago)

Logistical questions: Do we number our ballots? And can we vote for less than 30?

Evan R, Monday, 20 February 2017 19:22 (eight years ago)

You can vote for fewer than 30. I'll let ArchCarrier answer whether you should number your ballot.

xp Often people do pitch for some of their nominations but it's not mandatory.

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 19:24 (eight years ago)

generally it's a good idea to campaign for beloved nominees if they're not well known, it can really shake up the results

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:26 (eight years ago)

I think TITR is gonna do well which by all lights it deserves.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 20 February 2017 19:30 (eight years ago)

xxp - No, you don't need to number your ballots, but make sure to start with your #1 album and list them from top to bottom.

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 February 2017 19:34 (eight years ago)

Benton Falls - Fighting Starlight (how is that still missing I wonder)

Will take it as a compliment my parenthesized bewilderment got incorporated as fitting part of an emo album title.
People should listen to this if not known yet, for me some sort of missing link between Jawbox and Mineral or American Football with occasional screaming.

Very emo:

Kinda kicking myself for not nominating Tegan and Sara's The Con. Nobody really calls it emo but it fits the definition as well as 70% of this list

Will take it as a compliment my parenthesized bewilderment got incorporated as fitting part of an emo album title.

indicative maybe of the genre that it didn't immediately jump out to me when i was scanning the list

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 19:50 (eight years ago)

fuck I forgot to nominate Dismembermant Plan Is Terrified

is terrified is on the list?

Here are some albums I've discovered so far through this poll that I'd like to include in my ballot:

I Hate Myself - Four Songs EP
American Football - S/T

yes! love these two, glad to see they're getting a little traction

also a heads up: you've got get up kids' something to write home about twice (with and without 'the'). might be my fault for nominating it without the the, in fact. sorrryyyyyy

why ruin a good tradition? (Will M.), Monday, 20 February 2017 22:24 (eight years ago)

^^ under "the dismemberment plan" btw, those the's are hell

Did no one really nominate anything by Rise Against? The Sufferer and the Witness seems like it would fit. I listened to "The Good Left Undone" a decent amount that year.

Ha, it occurred to me because "All Your Friends Are Comedians" made me think a bit of a non-mersh Rise Against (not a bad thing) in an oblique way.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 23:08 (eight years ago)

so painful going thru this playlist. just got up to mark mission brand scar and was like i would love to listen to this album for the 10th time this year but i must skip it bc i have like 250 albums yet to go.

Mordy, Monday, 20 February 2017 23:09 (eight years ago)

Although I guess the Juno album came out two years before the first Rise Against album so they would be the mersh "Comedians" if my random mental associations amounted to anything.

Are you planning to listen to every album?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Monday, 20 February 2017 23:11 (eight years ago)

At the time, it felt like Thirty Ought Six were at least fairly well-known, but I feel like they're literally never mentioned anymore.

Hag Seed will be very close to the top of my ballot, I wanted to make sure to campaign for them...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2UYUMJlLmz8

In high school, Sunny Day Real Estate was the most important band to me. Jeremy Enigk contributed guest vocals to the song "Tourmaline" from this album which is what led me to track it down. Like literally every album that will make my ballot, it's one of those records I rarely listen to these days, but it's one that still holds up.

Anyway, power trio with lead bass!! Fuck, I love this record so much.

Deja Entendu suffers from having such a brilliant and novel opening track (after the intro). The rest of the album doesn't really stand out for me, especially after having heard almost nothing but emo for the past week. 'Jaws Theme Swimming' is great, though.
I'll definitely relisten before I vote, but for now I don't really get all the praise.

deja is great but I much prefer their next one

Spottie, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 07:23 (eight years ago)

BTW, is there a technical term for that trick where a singer overlaps the end of the previous line with the next one, like Brand New does in 'Sic transit gloria' and 'Jaws Theme Swimming'?
My favorite example of this is Kim Gordon in 'JC' from Dirty.

I'm thinking of starting a thread about this technique.

both straylight run albums are incredible imo, they're both kinda reactionary non-emo emo albums, especially the first, which exists in a v strange aesthetic space between emo and singer-songwriter-y stuff. second is a great ambitious indie pop album like the format's dog problems

got busy with family and missed the end of the nominations period, but the list looks awesome, will have to start whittling down ASAP, and try some of these ones out, Thirty Ought Six sounds really interesting on first blush, i still love SDRE's Diary a lot so anything Enigk-related is an automatic listen.

I have to rep for my nomination Five Knuckle Chuckle, they are absolutely skate-punk (w/ slighly pop-emo lyrics at times) but really great nonetheless and I think the voters in this thread would be the most likely on this site to enjoy this particular shit. Both albums are on youtube. They keep the speed to the nines the whole time so they never quite slowed down enough to write something that was really radio ready. They gave me their albums for making a donation to a charity of my choice, so I guess it figures they had to give it up and get real jobs, i suppose that wasn't the best business plan. That and there isn't a huge market for skate punk bands in Orangeville, ON.

Gonna campaign for the One Last Wish album. Rites of Spring's post-Rites of Spring band, with the same raw-throat conviction, but an overall more hopeful, lighter, poppier spirit. One of the great dead ends in underground rock history, imo, since the LP wasn't released until well after the fact (too late to be influential), but it imagined a cross between emo and '80s guitar-pop that never existed elsewhere. Every song is great, song for song as solid at Rites of Spring, so it's not a stretch to think it could've become a touchstone if it had ever been pressed.

the opening track is great but imo actually seems a bit out of place w/ the rest of the album which is tremendous on its own virtues. boy who blocked his own shot, quiet things that no one ever knows, okay i believe you but my tommy gun don't, guernica -- i mean like every track at least to me is incredibly memorable w/ a v distinctive musical aesthetic and maybe more importantly just chockfull of really clever lyrics. idk if you were paying attention to the lyrics while you were listening but they're a big part of the appeal to me. it's also a fantastic album to sing along really loudly to while you're feeling sad and driving somewhere.

Mordy, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:50 (eight years ago)

I like Deja Entendu a lot but I can't help feeling that The Devil and God makes it sound a bit quaint.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

i like devil & god but somehow it's not as lyrically interesting to me. musically probably more impressive but i don't think deja entendu is a slouch in that department either, just a bit more conventional

Mordy, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 16:57 (eight years ago)

i think deja entendu might be the greatest transitional album of all time; it's definitely suffering from an identity crisis but if anything that makes it better, both rejecting and embracing what made your favorite weapon work, trying to make something both ambitious and poppy, straightforward and oblique. i prefer devil and god but they're kinda equally special imo

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 21 February 2017 17:35 (eight years ago)

OK gonna attempt to campaign for two of the bands on my nomination list: Hot Water Music and Small Brown Bike...

At their core these are very similar acts. Three word band names! Dense, detuned guitars! Scruffy dudes howling over each other in gruff voices! Both take cues from acts that came before: HWM, say, Leatherface; and SBB, say, HWM and Jawbreaker. Both at/were near the top of my late 90s-early 00s post-hardcore/emo-core/punk fandom.

Fuel for the Hate Game and Forever and Counting are the essential HWM albums for me because they manage to be both strong and sensitive, lyrical and gutteral, and complex yet simple in their execution in true punk style. The lyrics are damn near impossible to decipher (especially considering the singers are frequently singing different lines at the same time) but they still bring a sense of unity, purpose, and optimism. Musically, their rhythm section and syncopated play has always impressed me... dare I say they can even be "groovy"?

Key tracks for me: On Fuel, "Turnstile", "Blackjaw", "Drunken Third". On Forever, "Better Sense", "Just Don't Say You Lost It", "Minno".

Small Brown Bike, at first, sounds very similar to HWM. I know they played shows/toured together, and both were mainstays of No Idea Records during their careers. SBB is a bit more emo, I'd say -- more songs about relationships and less about scene unity. The fact that they're from my home state of Michigan definitely plays into their selection on my part, I've probably seen them live a dozen times. At times they feature three vocalists taking on different levels of screaming/shouting the words, often answering one another. Of these two albums, Our Own Wars is the earlier and probably the more complete work, but the production and live execution of Dead Reckoning was amazing in its time. Neither have held up as well as I feel the HWM albums have, but I still love them.

Key tracks: On Dead Reckoning, "Sleeping Weather", "This Ship Will Burn", "I Will Bury You In Me". On Our Own Wars, "The Cannons And Tanks", "Zerosum", "Make This A Holiday" -- the last being the best SBB song ever and one I'm not ashamed to admit I will scream along with at full volume if given the chance.

That was a HUGE record for me once upon a time and I relistened to it for this poll for...maybe the first time in a decade?...and it's still so fucking good. Definitely pioneering for how it finds a crossroads between (ugh) "literate" indie songwriting and emo+pop-punk flavor, with almost impossibly wistful and impactful lyrics. i did manage to grab this is the way it goes and goes and goes and holy shit what a record

ooooh discogs actually has some reasonable CD prices (just not for the vinyl lol) I might have to bite the bullet on that even though I abhor shelling out for intl shipping

Heh I literally ordered a copy from there this morning - I haven't heard the album in full for like 15 years (a housemate had it on CD) but I remember liking it.

oh, i should rep for my favorite kitchen sink emo/pop-punk-ish record, johnny foreigner vs. everything. johnny foreigner toured with los campesinos! early on and they have similar energies but anatomically their songs are accelerated emo (one of my friends thinks of them as an extremely poppy pretty girls make graves which isn't wrong either). vs. everything is their extremely ambitious double album featuring piano ballads and spoken word interludes

Heartwarming to see the Juno love spread through ILM. How cool would it be if those albums ended up somewhere in the top 20 or so?

I don't really have that much in the way of emo in my collection so I've been doing some homework, Jejune and The Appleseed Cast have stuck with me so far.

I think I need my emo cut with something else, even if it's just, like a hint of hardcore or post-rock or whatever

Mare Vitalis and Low Level Owl

Both classics. But you should also try the follow-up to LLO, Two Conversations. Overall it's weaker than both MV and LLO, but it has two of their best songs, 'Fight Song' and 'Innocent Vigilant Ordinary':

in terms of 21st century emo, I have a major soft spot for two "we've gone soft and it's a huge improvement" records, Turnover's Peripheral Vision and Pianos Become the Teeth's Keep You.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:31 (eight years ago)

peripheral vision is v good but i still think it kinda falls apart halfway through bc the songs get less good and the tone doesn't vary at all

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:32 (eight years ago)

that first half though

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:34 (eight years ago)

oh and as long as I'm repping for stuff, another formative record for me was Chore's Take My Mask and Breathe, which surprised me by actually being on Spotify. they sounded quite a bit like early Deftones/Hum (if they recorded in a fancy garage) but they feel a bit more distinctly emo to me, especially the vocals - and I can't imagine either band writing something like "General Warning". Its third track is maybe the least punk song of all time and I have to brace myself for it every time (thankfully it's brief). the album is also ridiculously long like a lot of the other shit I nominate lol. The follow-up record The Coastaline Fire was much more professional and concise - it produced a minor Canadian hit in "The Hitchhiker" - but is less charming/distinctive to me.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Thursday, 23 February 2017 17:37 (eight years ago)

This is probably evidence that I was never really cut out to play this shit but ... when people talk about octave chords, do they just mean playing something in octaves? Or are they referring to a particular way of voicing chords, e.g. playing open fifths (i.e. power chords) but doubling the voices at the octave?

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:37 (eight years ago)

OK, if it just means this, then my first guess was right.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Thursday, 23 February 2017 18:45 (eight years ago)

Yeah, the name is a misnomer (it's just an octave, rather than a chord) but here's perhaps a better example:
http://www.guitarhabits.com/wp-content/uploads/octaves.jpg

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Thursday, 23 February 2017 19:10 (eight years ago)

Good to see the love for Thirty Ought Six. Hag Seed is a great record. My band shared a practice space (i.e., Sean's garage) with theirs and I was friends with Sean and Dave. They were also one of the best live bands I've ever seen. Thanks for nomming them!

"the french letter" feels like juno achieving what hoover had always been trying to do. stunning song

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 24 February 2017 02:41 (eight years ago)

in that it's this moody, jazzy, kinda ever-circling endlessly building post-hardcore thing

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 24 February 2017 02:43 (eight years ago)

No other band (with one possible exception) ever used three guitarists with greater ingenuity and grace

i'll 100 percent agree with this. tbh most of the bands that try to marry post-rock and emo are sooooo dull that i have no idea how juno got the combination so right

listened to and enjoyed fireside and knapsack during the drive home today. i think fireside esp but it's hard to really focus when you're driving but i think that was the album that had the most moments that really wowed me. am i totally misremembering or is there a long instrumental interlude during/as one of the tracks?

Mordy, Friday, 24 February 2017 03:47 (eight years ago)

Yes, that's Fireside! That "total abyss" is one of the reasons why I described them as the Swedish Juno earlier. And now all new Juno fans go and start listening to Elite :)

i'm also with you, simon. a future lived in past tense is the one for me.

I think that was me. Simon is the Goes and Goes fan.

There need to be a song poll soon. I really want to vote for MCR - Helena and for In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3 (the song). The albums aren't good enough but these two songs rule.

― satans favourite son, Thursday, February 23, 2017 10:29 AM (yesterday) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink

both of those albums are totally good enough. i was thinking for a song poll about really prominently voting for cartel's "honestly" and something corporate's "space" bc those parent albums def do not pull their weight

It's more that for me those two songs are head and shoulders better then the rest. And not good enough as in they won't be on my ballot.

Agreed - I also really really love 'Non-Equivalents', their other track from that split EP. Last time I checked those were the only two Juno tracks on Spotify (on the B-Core Sevens compilation).

This makes me so happy! One Last Wish never made the history books like Rites of Spring, but to me they seem like an essential part of the story. Along with the All Through a Life EP it provides kind of a belated happy ending for the project

Evan R, Friday, 24 February 2017 18:03 (eight years ago)

Ballot #2 submitted. Allowing for 50 albums gave Saves the Day a place on my ballot, making it the only pop-punk album on mine. I remember really liking "If You C Jordan" but that album didn't really hold up for me, so I cut it.

I was visiting friends for the last couple of days and I forgot to save my ILM password. Some quick reactions:

Big lolz at Brad's comments on hearing Fireside for the first time, especially the motorik and spaghetti western bits.

Thanks for posting the Mae video. The first time I listened to their album it didn't really make an impression (possibly because I was doing other things), but the video made me re-listen, and 'Suspension' is already in my top 20 of favorite emo singles.

Copeland and Last Days of April are great! This genre just keep on giving, it's insane.

And @cajunsunday: take care, man. I hope the music can make your situation a little lighter.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 25 February 2017 20:18 (eight years ago)

Best discovery of the last days is The Milton Abandonment by Ethel Meserve. The singer doesn't have the most distinctive voice, but the songs (pretty much all in the 5-minute range) have long instrumental breakdowns with multiple parts and nice interlocking guitars. Double bonus points for 1) cellos! and 2) naming a track after a Twin Peaks character.

Here's the opening track:

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 25 February 2017 20:18 (eight years ago)

god ranking a ballot is gonna be basically impossible for me, as my two major record demographics are gonna be "immensely important records for my development that have been since loosely classified or reclassified as emo" and "emo albums of the last few years I have loved"

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 26 February 2017 03:13 (eight years ago)

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 26 February 2017 11:49 (eight years ago)

Good song for a Sunday morning:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0O3A_nHre4w

I could hear the church bells ringing
They pealed aloud your praise
The members' faces were smiling
With their hands out stretched to shake

It's true they did not move me
My heart was hard and tired
Their perfect fire annoyed me
I could not find you anywhere

Could someone please tell me the story
Of sinners ransomed from the fall
I still have never seen you
And some days I don't love you at all

The devoted were wearing bracelets
To remind them why they came
Some concrete motivation
When the abstract could not do the same

But if all that's left is duty
I'm falling on my sword
At least then I would not serve
An unseen distant lord

Could someone please tell me the story
Of sinners ransomed from the fall
I still have never seen you
And some days I don't love you at all

If this is only a test
I hope that I'm passing
Cause I'm losing steam
And I still want to trust you

Peace, be still
Peace, be still
Peace, be still
Peace, be still

idk about 2018 but i have been considering pushing back the submission date. as it stands i wanted ballots by March 5th but i'd be okay extending it to... idk what do people think? i don't mind giving until the end of March if that's what u all want and we could begin the rollout on Mon, April 3rd? or we could do it sooner. i could definitely use the extra time.

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Tuesday, 28 February 2017 00:02 (eight years ago)

extending this will not work for me, plus no poll has not been open for a month. i already put in my PTO request and because of possible promotion i really can't modify it again, already have once. so i planned on opening the next poll right when this one was over or about March 13th or so. was going to do that roll-out the week of March 27th.

i guess you could suspend this poll until after that but i really need to stick with that schedule for the next poll. if you kept it as is, it would work out perfectly.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 02:41 (eight years ago)

Can't both polls run at the same time? It would be nice if the rollouts are spaced so they don't overlap, but the voting periods can happily coexist.

Plus, the total recorded output of the Talking Heads is about 1/40th of the nominated emo albums, so it's not unreasonable to have some more listening time.

ArchCarrier, Tuesday, 28 February 2017 09:29 (eight years ago)

personally i'd like to walk back the "two weeks" suggestion bc i'd rather not disrupt bee ok's life. also feel like there's probably a good reason why polls don't run simultaneously

i flow back and forth on sdre. the initial lineup was obv a very special band, and the reunion records were way more focused on enigk & co.'s advancing songwriting than band interplay. depends on what i'm in the mood for; lately it's been the latter

XXpost "New Year's Project" was the first song I ever heard that could be identified as emo, it was playing as background music while I had a conversation with my brother and I stopped talking when the first chorus kicked in and started crying. Emo.

Xpost I ranked How It Feels to Be Something On above Diary and didn't rate the rest. I also put that Mineral record below all the SDRE albums but in the same general sonic space as them, just blander than LP2.

Diary was my introduction to emo (specifically, seeing the video for "Seven" on 120 Minutes), so obviously it holds a special place for me, but if I had to rank them it'd be LP2 > How It Feels > Diary > The Rising Tide. Good chance that the first three all make my ballot.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 1 March 2017 20:25 (eight years ago)

I mentioned The Jealous Sound somewhere at the bottom of the nominations thread, but this post-Knapsack band deserves another shout out. The first track alone has a great melody, an Anniversary-like synthy thing (or something) and a singalong chorus that's designed for the biggest stadiums of the world, all tied together by the voice of Blair Shehan. The rest of this album is just as good.

boys life: departures and landfalls (the other post-rock emo band, i guess, but they don't sound anything like juno or post-rock, they just sound like they want to write emo songs with 10000 times more space. i used to think this band really inspired tbs bc two of their vocal melodies are identical)

Popping in to do a quick plug for Johnny Foreigner, a noisy punk pop band from Birmingham who are the best band in Britain imo and certainly have a higher hit rate than erstwhile tourmates Los Campesinos! (thanks Brad for nominating them)

This, from their third album 'vs Everything' is possibly their finest achievement, basically a Wong Kar-Wai film set in Germany over a heap of looped acoustic guitars (and c'mon a free bandcamp download):

https://johnnyforeigner.bandcamp.com/track/dont-show-us-your-fangs

Their debut is a lock for my no. 1 vote, it's front to back perfect. People may already be familiar with 'Salt, Peppa and Spinderella', so here are some others to check out. This one's has the most awe-inspiring intro and is about lust in grammar schools:

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Friday, 3 March 2017 21:33 (eight years ago)

I voted! Feeling very emotional now.

cajunsunday, Friday, 3 March 2017 23:00 (eight years ago)

It's only right

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Friday, 3 March 2017 23:24 (eight years ago)

Marty8501 (Marty Innerlogic), Friday, 3 March 2017 23:32 (eight years ago)

61 albums on my first-draft ballot...not too bad

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 4 March 2017 01:42 (eight years ago)

aaaaand voted! that was some seriously agonizing ordering.

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Saturday, 4 March 2017 02:05 (eight years ago)

i ordered mine based on the emo game.

billstevejim, Saturday, 4 March 2017 05:29 (eight years ago)

voted, way too much Pedro the Lion.

Bee OK, Saturday, 4 March 2017 06:13 (eight years ago)

oh good you probably made up for how i, to my considerable surprise, included zero pedro the lion

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 March 2017 09:14 (eight years ago)

Voted! The chance of hearing a life-changing album before the deadline is getting smaller and smaller and besides, I have to get some work done. Very excited for the rollout!

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 4 March 2017 09:53 (eight years ago)

hi I don't think I will have time to vote in this poll but I just wanted to voice my approval of matthew good; avalanche & last of the ghetto astronauts are great as well as the records brad mentioned

ogmor, Saturday, 4 March 2017 10:34 (eight years ago)

I'm going to vote in a bit, hungover and emotional as appropriate. I haven't heard as much stuff that's new to me as I would've liked and I think my ballot's going to be a bit weird but there we are.

Still don't know if I'm going to include things like Thursday and C&C that used to mean a lot to me but haven't listened to in many years...

ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 11:49 (eight years ago)

Rival Schools was the last album I added to my ballot, so thanks Spottie! Campaigning does help.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 4 March 2017 11:57 (eight years ago)

Sadly I've been wildly busy recently with trying to not be unemployed (which by all rights this should have been the perfect playlist for) and I haven't had time to listen to much. Still, I'll submit a quick ballot tomorrow and I'm very excited for rollout discoveries. Thanks so much for doing this, Mordy!

tangenttangent, Saturday, 4 March 2017 12:16 (eight years ago)

60 on my shortlist. time to whittle down

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 14:08 (eight years ago)

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 14:14 (eight years ago)

Mordy says I can do a write-in so everyone who hasn't voted yet (TT,LJ, sund4r etc please give a listen and a top 5 vote to City Of Caterpillar - City Of Caterpillar.

Hi5 AC

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Saturday, 4 March 2017 16:10 (eight years ago)

I've left this too late but Shiner were a great band, one of my nominations. Really strong post-hardcore with a solid rhythm section and some slightly experimental/math-rock leanings

ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 16:48 (eight years ago)

Ugh, I don't know what I'm doing wrong but yt won't embed for me any more, sorry.

The songs were 'This Situationist' from 'Lula Divinia', And the title track from 'The Egg.' They're awesome, honest.

Oh yeah, City of Caterpillar's pretty good too.

ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 16:51 (eight years ago)

Shiner were great and not forgotten by me

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

Do you like Gospel?
This album is easily one of the best albums of the 00s.

Sorry I literally just sent my ballot man... City of Caterpillar made it though. Glad someone else likes Shiner too!

ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 17:21 (eight years ago)

There was quite a few shiner fans on here back in the day. Its probably how I heard of them.

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 17:24 (eight years ago)

ftr that Gospel album is loved by scott seward too. Whether youve voted or not you should play it. (as should anyone reading)

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 17:26 (eight years ago)

Screamo-prog! Fuck, this is great.

ultros ultros-ghali, Saturday, 4 March 2017 18:04 (eight years ago)

Did you look under the couch?

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 20:22 (eight years ago)

Yeah, Gospel sound v good a few tracks in, sort of like what I hoped Mars Volta would sound like.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Saturday, 4 March 2017 20:29 (eight years ago)

I wish Mars Volta had sounded like Crime In Choir. (ex atd-i dudes who quit early and not the guys who were in the shitty band Sparta who i saw twice supporting Qotsa)

Wouldve voted Crime in Choir if they had been nommed

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:03 (eight years ago)

I voted btw Mordy, did you get it?

Odysseus, Saturday, 4 March 2017 21:03 (eight years ago)

the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Saturday, 4 March 2017 22:22 (eight years ago)

Mordy, the op says Sunday but saw you say in the other thread you need it by end of day today?

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Saturday, 4 March 2017 23:19 (eight years ago)

Apparently Sunday evening is enough time so that's when it'll close. Rollout on Monday. I'm thinking... 15 albums a day w/ 17 on the first day. wrap up on friday.

Mordy, Saturday, 4 March 2017 23:27 (eight years ago)

Not a top 300 then?

Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 01:29 (eight years ago)

I voted. My ballot was ridiculous.

My Body's Made of Crushed Little Evening Stars (Sund4r), Sunday, 5 March 2017 02:26 (eight years ago)

non ridiculous ballots should be thrown out imo

who else submitted a full 50

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Sunday, 5 March 2017 03:07 (eight years ago)

50? I thought it was 30

Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 03:13 (eight years ago)

Of course Mordy's the boss, but there are no technical reasons why your ballots should only have 30 albums. 50 is fine by me.

I haven't even started to shortlist yet lol, probably gonna get six beers deep the night of, scan the noms list, and go strictly by feels

Then it's fine with me. If people who already submitted want to resubmit that's fine. Just make a note that it's a resubmission in your new ballot.

I voted for 50 albums

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 5 March 2017 06:55 (eight years ago)

my ballot is in.

really weird (but awesome) group of albums in the end, had a lot of trouble ranking them in comparison to each other. really interested to see the results!

Will (kruezer2), Sunday, 5 March 2017 21:55 (eight years ago)

This City of Caterpillar stuff is absolutely amazing!

tangenttangent, Sunday, 5 March 2017 22:21 (eight years ago)

Told you so. Did you like Gospel?

Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 22:35 (eight years ago)

Haven't listened yet. Compiling film ballot and sourcing outliers for my emo 50.

tangenttangent, Sunday, 5 March 2017 22:48 (eight years ago)

The Gospel album is better than City of Caterpillar (its screamo-prog)

i resubmitted my ballot btw

Odysseus, Sunday, 5 March 2017 22:52 (eight years ago)

I wasn't going to vote in this but we're listening to Braid and...I might, you know

a serious and fascinating fartist (Simon H.), Monday, 6 March 2017 03:29 (eight years ago)

Lebro v. Wade (Spottie), Monday, 6 March 2017 03:33 (eight years ago)

Run Quick EMO ALBUMS; Here I’ll POLL, You VOTED

Mordy, Monday, 6 March 2017 12:46 (eight years ago)

Woohoo!!

ArchCarrier, Monday, 6 March 2017 12:49 (eight years ago)

Sad I had crazy family things come up and didn't vote. Will follow the results happily.

husked, tonal wails (irrational), Monday, 6 March 2017 17:14 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I had a trip come up out of the blue and didn't get a chance to compile even a shortlist, so I feel that the poll may be lacking another elderly emo voter, but such is that fate.
