After the grand success of the 1970s SOUL/FUNK/DISCO ALBUMS POLL, it's high time to make a list of the best 1970s SOUL/FUNK/DISCO TRACKS!

Here's the deal: you have a weekend and a week to nominate your favorite soul, funk and/or disco tracks that were released from 1970 to 1979 (the main focus should be on 70s soul). You have an unlimited amount of nominations, but please use some common sense.

On Monday, March 27 I'll open the voting and campaigning thread, and I'm planning to have the rollout between April 10 and 14.

But let me start off the nominations with 30 great tracks.

Oh my god, I had no idea this was happening. Basically impossible, but I'll try?

Milkwalker's World (Old Lunch), Friday, 17 March 2017 14:58 (eight years ago)

You are supposed to wait, there is a reason why we have the ordering and timing thead. So we don't have two polls going on at the same time.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 March 2017 15:10 (eight years ago)

I was afraid you were going to say that. But I never added this poll to the 'official' list and the album poll also ran happily alongside other polls IIRC. I'll make sure the rollouts don't overlap, which is the most important thing I think.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 17 March 2017 15:15 (eight years ago)

True, and I'm probably being a bit over protected. If you waited until the roll-out started it would have been much smoother.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 March 2017 15:21 (eight years ago)

Oh man. Glad I came back to ILX.

So...wait, are we doing this or are we waiting to do this?

Milkwalker's World (Old Lunch), Friday, 17 March 2017 17:20 (eight years ago)

kornrulez6969, Friday, 17 March 2017 17:36 (eight years ago)

So...wait, are we doing this or are we waiting to do this?

I should have held off my noms until this was definitively settled upon. If the consensus is that we should wait a bit, I would be completely in favour of that. Having this + the Talking Heads poll going at once is admittedly a bit head spinning.

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 March 2017 17:48 (eight years ago)

Don't the decade/genre polls usually just sort of happen in their own realm?

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Friday, 17 March 2017 17:49 (eight years ago)

Yes, that's usually what happens. I also don't mind if we stretch out the nominations for this poll till the Talking Heads rollout starts, but that might take a while.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 17 March 2017 17:51 (eight years ago)

If you can wait, that would be best.

Bee OK, Friday, 17 March 2017 18:04 (eight years ago)

x-post:

To be honest, I'm far more interested in this poll than the Talking Heads one, so I have no problem with this poll continuing.

gospodin simmel, Friday, 17 March 2017 19:06 (eight years ago)

Depending on how active this thread is going to be in the coming week (and I expect at least 500 nominations), I can either extend the nomination period or let it stay the way I described in my first post. We'll see around March 26. For now, everyone can keep posting their tracks.

I don't think the two polls will bite each other at all, especially since the complete Talking Heads discography can be listened to in a day. You could spend the rest of your life listening to the potential nominations for the soul poll.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 17 March 2017 19:35 (eight years ago)

I call "not it!" for compiling the Spotify list.

Brook Benton - Rainy Night in Georgia
Delfonics - Didn't I (Blow Your Mind This Time)
Flaming Ember - I'm Not My Brother's Keeper

I wondered how I missed these when I was making up my list earlier, and then I noticed: they're all *technically* from 1969. I am in no way interested in playing date police, though, so I'll leave up to our pollster how rigid we want to be with dates. It is hard for me to imagine a more quintessentially 70s Soul song than "Didn't I (Blow your Mind This Time)," (released, Wiki says, December 1969--the London Calling of 70s Soul tracks?).

some sad trombone Twilight Zone shit (cryptosicko), Friday, 17 March 2017 22:07 (eight years ago)

If they charted in 1970 I'd say they're fair game, but that's me.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 17 March 2017 22:35 (eight years ago)

I've got them dated as '70 on my player, so maybe they came out very late? I think they probably all peaked in '70. The other big one is "Tears of a Clown"--we've had this argument before--which actually came out in '67, I think, but hit #1 when reissued in '70. To me it absolutely belongs with 1970.

clemenza, Friday, 17 March 2017 22:37 (eight years ago)

Checked Whitburn--don't think I've taken that off the shelf for a decade--and "Rainy Night in Georgia" and "Didn't I" both debuted on the Hot 100 in January of '70, and "I'm Not My Brother's Keeper" in October of '70.

The Flaming Ember are in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. Huh?

clemenza, Friday, 17 March 2017 23:06 (eight years ago)

Aretha Franklin - Rock Steady
Dee Dee Warwick - Down So Low

Joe Simon - Drowning in the Sea of Love
Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine

If you know 'Hills of Katmandu' you already have a head start. Also, there will be at least two weeks of campaigning, so I'm sure you'll find enough good songs to fill a ballot.

(almost refrained from nominating "i want you back" since it was released in october '69 and has a strong likelihood of doing extremely well on any poll for which it is nominated but it was topping the charts in 1970 so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

Shenanigans! It's 1969!

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Sunday, 19 March 2017 18:42 (eight years ago)

Radio was different back then. The only time you really heard a song on the radio was while it was on the charts. Before it was a single or after it fell off, you basically had to own the record to hear it. By that standard, "I Want You Back" was 100% a 1970 song.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 19 March 2017 18:54 (eight years ago)

i'm not that attached to leaving it in so should it be stricken from the noms list that'd be fine by me. i know that its omnipresence on 60s nostalgia and rock canon lists makes it hard in the present day to separate from the 60s/1969, but it did break in december 1969 and then reach peak cultural saturation in january 1970. (it wasn't on the 1969 year-end charts for pop or r&b; it was on 1970's.) i decided to include it after seeing the exchange above re: "rainy night in georgia" and "didn't i (blow your mind this time)".

(if the argument in favor of those two is that they entered the charts in 1970 while "i want you back" did so in 1969, i would point out that that's not strictly true: billboard issue dates have always been post-dated by nearly two weeks, so records entering the charts on the issue dated january 10, 1970 were technically doing so in 1969.)

My inclination would be to count "I Want You Back" as 1969. Even though it didn't hit #1 until 1970, it had already entered the Top 10 on the last Hot 100 of 1969 (I checked). When you add in dyl's point about the two-week lag time, it was definitely ubiquitous before 1970 had begun--which wasn't true of "Rainy Night in Georgia" or "Didn't I." Agree with JF's general point that the charts should be the arbiter, not release dates (much less the release date of whatever album the song is on).

ArchCarrier, Monday, 20 March 2017 22:21 (eight years ago)

If there's a huge overlap with the disco poll I might set some rules, but I think it will work out fine.
In the albums poll, most of the funk ended up in the lower half because not enough people voted for it. I don't think Cerrone has a big chance of getting anywhere near the top, but good for them if they manage to.

Johnny Guitar Watson - A Real Mother for Ya

If there's a huge overlap with the disco poll I might set some rules, but I think it will work out fine.

OK, but 15 of the top 20 tracks from the Disco Poll have already been nominated, which looks like quite an overlap!

mike t-diva, Monday, 20 March 2017 23:55 (eight years ago)

You cannot talk about even just "1970s SOUL/FUNK" without including disco, it doesn't make sense. I would be happy to exclude Eurodisco and other flavours that aren't part of the story but I don't think you can ban all overlap with the other poll.

Choco Blavatsky (seandalai), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:07 (eight years ago)

Yeah, banning disco is crazytalk. NickB thanks for remembering Inner Life. That's a top 10 candidate for me and it completely slipped my mind.

gospodin simmel, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:13 (eight years ago)

Another vote-for-whatever-you-want vote. This one should be all-encompassing. Exceptionally dicey interpretations of what qualifies won't get enough votes to disrupt anything anyway (and if the votes are there, then it's automatically no longer dicey, it belongs*).

*does not apply to President of the United States

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 March 2017 00:48 (eight years ago)

You don't have to ban disco... just be reasonable and anti-completist

a but (brimstead), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 01:00 (eight years ago)

In this context, I'm far less likely to vote for anything remotely Eurodisco, which even in the context of the disco poll was already a pretty distant threat.

insidious assymetrical weapons (Eric H.), Tuesday, 21 March 2017 05:20 (eight years ago)

I was dying to nom "I'll Bet You," but it originally came out as a single in 1969. Did we decide the rules about records like that?

Al Green - L-O-V-E
Isley Brothers - Footsteps in the Dark
Isley Brothers - Live It Up
Pleasure - Glide
Robert Palmer - Every Kinda People
Stevie Wonder - All In Love Is Fair
Stevie Wonder - Visions
Stevie Wonder - Too High

Futuristic Bow Wow (thewufs), Wednesday, 22 March 2017 02:04 (eight years ago)

If it came out late in 1969 and charted in 1970 it's fine by me. I can't check every single release date, though, so let me know if something has slipped through.

off-topic: what's a good site for chart statistics?

ArchCarrier, Wednesday, 22 March 2017 06:52 (eight years ago)

song-database.com is good and accurate for billboard charts (tho not complete for all charts). if you view too many chart trajectories, tho, it'll start asking you to register and pay lol. to avoid that i usually just search for the artist or song i wanna look up and just look at the peak or debut date/peak date that i'm seeking out (w/o clicking on the chart trajectory). for example typing "i'll bet you" into the songs search bar tells me that it entered the chart in the oct. 4, 1969 issue and peaked at #63 in the nov. 1 issue.

for approximate 45rpm single release date estimates i usually look at 45cat.com since the ppl entering info there seem to know their shit and like to quibble over totally trivial shit like months of release, matrix numbers, when it was reviewed in trade journals and other things i don't care about. anyway that site sez the 45 for "i'll bet you" was issued in august '69.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 25 March 2017 13:14 (eight years ago)

That's more the CSNY type of soul. One of These Nights IS a disco song. At least as much as Hotel California is a reggae song. Which might mean not enough for this poll but whatever.
