It's that time again, kids. Thanks to the significantly longer campaigning period (we're waiting for the main polls to wrap), there's going to be ample time to discover new faves, so campaign liberally!

The rules are as usual: up to 50 votes, weighted/ranked or unweighted/unranked. You can submit your ballot and find the full nominations spreadsheet below:

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfhF7fGiZ0O7Vy2U6BZ-RCI7Z3MWjFjigtvDzi6JQo6UjOOqA/viewform

For pollrunners' ease, ****please**** copy and paste directly from the spreadsheet to the voting form on individual lines, like so:

Acid Mothers Temple & The Melting Paraiso U.F.O. - Wandering The Outer Space
Aether Realm - Tarot
Aetherian - The Untamed Wilderness
Akatharta - Spiritus Immundus
Akercocke – Renaissance In Extremis

After you vote, please post here so the Metal Authorities can confirm they've received your ballot.

Ballots are due by Saturday, February 3rd!!!

Simon H., Saturday, 23 December 2017 19:11 (seven years ago)

And remember to campaign for your faves as boosting really works!

imago, you might get some mileage from the Multishiva album? It's basically blackened sludge with lots of Värähtelijä-style effects on top

Well in that case everyone needs to make sure that they hear Retrocausal then.

Aside from Retrocausal, the one I'd like you all (and D.A.M. in particular) to hear is the Corpse Garden, a brilliantly psychedelic death-trip through Costa Rican drug magic, led by a wondrous fretless bass performance

Cardi Acs (imago), Saturday, 23 December 2017 21:12 (seven years ago)

Enjoying the Multishiva

I may vote later today since I have a day off from visiting my mum in hospital.
(she fell last week and broke her leg on the icy pavement because the council didn't salt them despite the weather being treacherous and she lay on the pavement for two hours in excruciating agony waiting for the ambulance because they had thousands of similar scenarios across the country ) and she wont be home for Christmas.

Fuck the Council!

Is it too late to have things added to the spreadsheet? I have a ranked list of 61 metal albums and only 38 of the albums are on the spreadsheet.

sure, list 'em off here!

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 13:25 (seven years ago)

Super! Thanks! I tried to format them in the same manner as the spreadsheet.

Alestorm - No Grave But The Sea
Antisect - The Rising of the Lights
Big|Brave - Ardor
Cursed Moon - Rite of Darkness
Disharmony - Goddamn The Sun
Eluveitie - Evocation II: Pantheon
Falaise - My Endless Immensity
Farsot - Fail Lure
Horn - Turm Am Hang
Ides of Gemini - Women
Light of the Morning Star - Nocta
Mammoth Mammoth - Mount the Mountain
Naudiz - Wulfasa Kunja
Nortt - Endeligt
Overkill - The Grinding Wheel
Pyriphlegethon - The Murky Black of Eternal Night
Reverorum ib Malacht - Ter Agios Numini
Selcouth - Heart Is the Star of Chaos
Slagmaur - Thill Smitts Terror
Tau Cross - Pillar of Fire
The Midnight Ghost Train - Cypress Ave.
The Wizards - Full Moon in Scorpio
Zeal & Ardor - Devil Is Fine

Kinda surprised that a few of these didn't make the list since many of them were discussed in Rolling Metal 2017 extensively.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:09 (seven years ago)

Has anyone voted yet? I don't have access to check and just wondered if people have voted but didn't post here saying so.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:10 (seven years ago)

Happy to add these, I think the Zeal and Ardor album is 2016 though?

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:15 (seven years ago)

It definitely got some votes last year though I don't think it cracked 101.

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:17 (seven years ago)

The Zeal & Ardor was released independently and also saw a vinyl release in 2016 however MVKA Records gave it an 'official' US release on 2/24/2017 and it was also the first time it appeared on CD anywhere.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:31 (seven years ago)

I'm sort of amazed we missed Big|Brave in the nomination process

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 14:50 (seven years ago)

Slagmaur missing was the head-scratcher for me. We discussed that one a lot in rolling metal.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 15:01 (seven years ago)

Sadly a lot of regulars on that thread don't participate in polls.
Hopefully Simon can persuade them? Brian you should try too!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 2 January 2018 15:50 (seven years ago)

I'll begin the pestering campaign sometime this week.

Simon H., Tuesday, 2 January 2018 15:52 (seven years ago)

The ones I've listened to a lot this year are Jute Gyte, Akvan (Iranian folk/black metal hybrid that integrates oud with intense black metal), and Árstíðir lífsins (epic progressive Icelandic folk metal). Converge is catching up too. Are there any Branca-metal releases I should check out urgently? Gnaw Their Tongues?

beard papa, Thursday, 4 January 2018 07:18 (seven years ago)

I had heard both Krallice releases but hadn't given them enough time. Loum is pretty great, esp, and I just bought it. The Thantifaxath surprises me: pretty eclectic with some dazzlingly intense passages.

ILM's 2017 End of Year Tracks & Albums Poll / VOTING THREAD

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 6 January 2018 15:06 (seven years ago)

I've been listening to In Contact by Caligula's Horse a lot. They blend prog-metal with some mildly djenty elements to uncommonly good effect, and pull off a few gambits that really shouldn't work, most notably a three minute spoken-word-only track (!) and a fifteen-minute closer. Their make-or-break clean vocals sound great to me - there's even a moment in "Dream the Dead" (one of the best openers of the year) that evokes my beloved Anneke-era The Gathering.

Simon H., Saturday, 6 January 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)

I voted. Has anyone else?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 7 January 2018 19:26 (seven years ago)

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 9 January 2018 13:47 (seven years ago)

oh and I hope Agalloch fans checked out the excellent Pillorian album. I wonder when the other ex members of Agalloch will get an album out

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Tuesday, 9 January 2018 13:48 (seven years ago)

the Solstafir record is pretty solid

Simon H., Tuesday, 9 January 2018 13:50 (seven years ago)

Au champ des morts is excellent indeed!

Siegbran, Tuesday, 9 January 2018 14:15 (seven years ago)

Sannhet is great, although I'm not sure if I would call it metal.

seandalai how many ballots do we have so far?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 11 January 2018 16:58 (seven years ago)

On a less false note, I need to also stump for Lich King's insanely fun the Omniclasm, the rare metal album that a) has a non-corny sense of humor and b) still manages to rock the fuck out. Even the sequencing is witty, pairing "Cut the Shit", a rant against scene police and self-serious political bands, with "Our Time to Riot"...a sincere political song about destroying the American government. Also: a song about how awful parenting is ("Preschool Cesspool"), and (along with Kreator) one of the year's two explicitly pro-LGBT thrash songs ("Offense").

Simon H., Thursday, 11 January 2018 18:58 (seven years ago)

I know this hasn't actually been discussed among the pollrunners yet but I'm wondering if it might be wise to extend the voting period for one more week, since the main trax/albums rollout won't actually wrap up until (I believe) February 2nd, and I'm a little concerned there may not leave be lot of spare air for \metal/ while that's going on

Simon H., Friday, 12 January 2018 13:35 (seven years ago)

To be honest? I'd prob move it back to Sunday, to give people the weekend to focus on their metal ballots, but I doubt much more would be needed. That way you benefit from the momentum coming off the albums poll

I think this is the first time that metal poll happens after the big poll...? Usually metal poll acts an okay hype vehicle for like the top 2 or 3 to make it onto the albums poll, but I don't really kniw what the effect will be now that we're reversing the order. Shoukd be interesting...

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 12 January 2018 18:16 (seven years ago)

Yeah this is a first try at doing it in this order AFAIK

Simon H., Friday, 12 January 2018 18:18 (seven years ago)

the longer we open the poll the more people put things off and wait til the last hour to vote

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 12 January 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)

and then ask for another 24 hours..

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 12 January 2018 18:37 (seven years ago)

we only have 6 ballots so far btw, hoping to see more campaigning for albums to encourage others.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 12 January 2018 20:33 (seven years ago)

I will definitely be voting. Be patient.

I likely won't wait until the last minute either since I am very happy with my Top 60 and placing. I had to get some lists together for earlier deadlines and don't anticipate changing much when I vote here.

For those who are interested, I created a Spotify list of my favorite tracks from my favorite albums of 2017. The metal-to-non-metal ratio is about 4-to-1 so if you put it on random and let 'er rip, it won't all be the devil's music. But most of it is.

I totally forgot to nominate Emyn Muil - Elenion Ancalima but it is total Summoning worship that will be high on my ballot, easily better than the actual new Summoning record.

Délétère - Per Aspera Ad Pestilentiam : excellent Canadian BM, excellent mix of the usual fast/furious and catchy rockin' stuff.

Goatpenis is absolutely kickass. Ungfell - Tôtbringære if you like Peste Noire. Slagmaur if you like Ceremony-era Samael. Colotyphus if you like Drudkh. Contaminated if you'd have liked Entombed to be doomier. Lingua Ignota if you like Diamanda Galas.

billy woods' album Known Unknowns is fantastic and well worth a listen.

Also the Buddy track Find Me was great: https://youtu.be/NWTNbDkalAQ

Other tracks I am campaigning for:
Blanck Mass - Please
Four Tet - Two Thousand and Seventeen

octobeard, Tuesday, 16 January 2018 07:36 (seven years ago)

^ ^ ^ Goddamnit wrong thread. NO metal in any of that.

octobeard, Tuesday, 16 January 2018 07:37 (seven years ago)

I don't know how much appeal it will have, since I'm still kind of puzzled by it still after all these months, but I think Locust Leaves - A Subtler Kind of Light is worthy of consideration. Manages to incorporate tech-death, black metal, progressive metal and ambient within 35 minutes, featuring Ayloss from Spectral Lore on lead guitar. If that helps.

And if you anyone ever liked the idea of Peste Noire but found them too problematic, then Ungfell - Tôtbringære is for you.

you are allowed to vote for just one album

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:34 (seven years ago)

talking about the big poll, I wonder what/if any metal will make the 77?
I seem to remember a previous metal poll winner not making the 77 yet lower down albums did.

Will a lack of metal poll being up first hurt chances of enough consensus to make main poll?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:38 (seven years ago)

I've always thought when it comes to main poll that everyone's already voted for metal so leave it out in main poll.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:39 (seven years ago)

i voted for 8 (arguably 9) metal albums in the main poll. the one i voted lowest is the only one of those i half-expect to show up though

#TeamHailing (imago), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:39 (seven years ago)

the electric wizard album wasn't nommed in main poll and they usually showed up in the 77 i think? Converge maybe has the best chance

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:46 (seven years ago)

would be weird if the electric wizard did badly in polls after how the older fans felt it was a return to form after the last few*

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 20 January 2018 20:47 (seven years ago)

Can't speak for others but I was enthusiastic! I just suck at campaigning. Still, my favorite metal albums this year that no one else seemed to care about, and actually my favorite metal albums period, were Entheos - Le Zahir which is free/name-your-price on bandcamp, and Anakim - Monuments to Departed Worlds which I didn't nominate because I heard it after the deadline. The former are from Quebec and make atmospheric, *cough* post *cough* black metal which manages to not be boring, the latter are a technical death metal band from UK and the album is just fucking great.

Ex Eye's selft-titled was great too but I don't think it needs campaigning.

Another one I loved this year is Der Weg Einer Freiheit - Finisterre.

Dinsdale, Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:53 (seven years ago)

tbh I think everything needs campaigning. I think we are wrong to assume everyones heard what you think are the major releases.

I don't even know if everyone who liked Agalloch have even heard Pillorian.

I'll say one thing though - the rolling metal thread last year was really quiet and it felt like the core group of posters on it was small.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

oh and dinsdale simon could add that album for you. With (i hope) 90% of ballots still to be cast, there is a very real chance voters will give it a listen and vote for it.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 21:59 (seven years ago)

I've also just purchased it to give it a listen. Campaigning works!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:01 (seven years ago)

oh wait i purchased the Entheos. I think you nommed that?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:03 (seven years ago)

yeah I nominated that one

I forgot to mention Cavernlight - As We Cup Our Hands And Drink From The Stream of Our Ache... I don't know if that one was talked about in the rolling thread but it was my favorite doom release this year.

Dinsdale, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:17 (seven years ago)

I'm sure Simon will add them to the noms

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:18 (seven years ago)

Cavernlight was nominated, I meant I had forgotten about it in my lame attempt at campaigning :)

Dinsdale, Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:24 (seven years ago)

well since hardly anyone's voted its still a good time to campaign!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 25 January 2018 22:31 (seven years ago)

Not sure how much good it will do, but I'd be happy to campaign for these wonderful albums (strangely, many of my favorites, or at least the low-profile ones, came out on Invictus this year):

Apostate Viaticum - Before the Gates of Gomorrah - Raw and weird death metal, maybe for Howls of Ebb fans.
http://invictusproductions666.bandcamp.com/album/before-the-gates-of-gomorrah

Antiversum - Cosmos Comedenti - Cavernous, atmospheric doomy death.
http://invictusproductions666.bandcamp.com/album/cosmos-comedenti

Malokarpatan - Nordkarpatenland - A Slovakian black metal/hard rock concept album, maybe for Hail Spirit Noir fans.
http://invictusproductions666.bandcamp.com/album/nordkarpatenland

Undergang - Misantropologi - Awesome dank and guttural old-school death, maybe for Convulse fans.
http://undergang.bandcamp.com/album/misantropologi

I would also mention Power Trip and Immolation, but I'm assuming everyone knows them already.

o. nate, Friday, 26 January 2018 01:56 (seven years ago)

dinsdale, I added the Anakim album!

nate, Malokarpapatan have my vote :)

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 02:23 (seven years ago)

Nice. My campaign is working already.

o. nate, Friday, 26 January 2018 03:40 (seven years ago)

Bummed I didn't nominate some stuff - loved - Resurgency - No Worlds... Nor Gods Beyond , Bufihimat - I , Droid - Terrestrial Mutations, Slow - V - Oceans , Sutrah - Dunes , Madrost - The Essence of Time Matches No Flesh , Toxic Shock - TWENTYLASTCENTURY - but, alas, they weren't listed.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:45 (seven years ago)

If you'd brought it up sooner I could have added them!

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 16:47 (seven years ago)

We're gonna go back to doing this before the main poll next year right? Good good

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

I guess metal is never truly an anticlimax though

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

well people requested longer voting times and wanted the year to end so all albums that came out in december got in. And seandalai can only do it before xmas or after big poll.

as it turned out with my mum being in hospital for 2 weeks in december there wouldve been no way i couldve run it and simon wouldve been left on his own

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 16:51 (seven years ago)

all fair, all fair. hoping Mother Odysseus is faring better ofc!

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:54 (seven years ago)

No big deal! Good year for metal - there were a lot of records I really liked a re-visited many times that all made my top 50. I'll rep those missing ones though - esp. the Resurgency.

BlackIronPrison, Friday, 26 January 2018 16:57 (seven years ago)

Perhaps we might naughtily speculate about which metal albums will appear in the 77 next week

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 17:00 (seven years ago)

I dont expect any except maybe Chelsea Wolfe. Anything else would be a surprise. Qotsa might not make it because of Josh kicking that photographer, I dont think ILM is prepared to put music on its own after some horrible behaviour like that. I did vote for it but I did want to put in brackets Josh was a knob after it.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:10 (seven years ago)

Electric Wizard wasn't even nominated for the big poll.

I suppose Jute Gyte might get in since less votes might be needed and his usual 5 voters amongst us might sneak him in

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:11 (seven years ago)

One year the metal poll winner didn't even get in the top 100 in the big poll. Was it Hammers Of Misfortune?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:12 (seven years ago)

Don't think Jute Gyte will make it this time. There hasn't been so much clamour.

I think Ex Eye has a chance

imago, Friday, 26 January 2018 17:18 (seven years ago)

I have no idea what will even win *this* poll. Seandalai hasn't sent me access to the ballots or anything yet as he's so busy with big poll

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

This was my Top Ten at The Agit Reader, one of two websites I write for these days. Consider that my campaigning!

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:24 (seven years ago)

Has there been any debut albums by bands that have made an impact this year?
Most of the big impact albums I can think of this year are by established acts or related to big bands (Pillorian, avatarium,Au champ des morts)

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:26 (seven years ago)

The Tchornobog debut has gotten a lot of love critically.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 26 January 2018 17:30 (seven years ago)

Anyone who likes the 90s Norwegian school of avant-garde/post-black metal should hear Urarv's debut. Aldrahn on vox and guitar!

YES

Dinsdale, Friday, 26 January 2018 20:15 (seven years ago)

we may as well discuss the big (on ilm) albums then, what did you guys think of the albums by
Mastodon
Electric Wizard
Converge
Cleric
Elder
Bell Witch
Pallbearer
Godflesh
Wolves in the Throne Room

and jute gyte?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:43 (seven years ago)

enh, enh, pretty good, not my thing, awesome, pretty good (tho excessive), not bad, v good, enh, and pretty good, in that order.

Simon H., Friday, 26 January 2018 20:44 (seven years ago)

I couldn't even tell you what the big metal albums out in the real world are tbh. Was there any platinum metal albums?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 20:51 (seven years ago)

I've only heard 3 of those

Elder = A+
Godflesh, WITTR = meh

Dinsdale, Friday, 26 January 2018 20:51 (seven years ago)

Mastodon Not heard, but I haven't liked anything else that they've done after Crack the Skye so I assume it's pretty lame
Electric Wizard Not for me thanks
Converge NO
Cleric YES
Elder I didn't like their last one but this is really great!
Bell Witch Decent, not a keeper for me though
Pallbearer Haven't heard, didn't like their previous much, should give it a go maybe since I liked Elder
Godflesh Always been lukewarm on this band
Wolves in the Throne Room Overall solid and very impressive in parts
Jute Gyte Sometimes think this could be his best? Very good, anyway

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:25 (seven years ago)

Just missed my main ballot but I think Elder might be one of the best rock bands out there rn. I'm holding out meager hope that their album and/or Botanist and/or Ex Eye might scrape the lower reaches of the countdown. Obv Jute Gyte as well...

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 26 January 2018 21:35 (seven years ago)

This might be my favourite metal song of the year
Electric Wizard - Necromania

https://youtu.be/HqO_gPaxLYU

remember the year we tried a tracks poll and hardly anyone voted? I thought it was a shame it didn't work out.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 27 January 2018 00:11 (seven years ago)

I was just wondering the other day why there were no tracks poll... Then again I'm not a tracks person myself and my ballot would likely have 3 items top. Doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested if others started to list their favorite tracks in this thread or elsewhere.

Dinsdale, Saturday, 27 January 2018 07:24 (seven years ago)

the problem was nobody was interested in a tracks poll

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 27 January 2018 13:14 (seven years ago)

Metal is an album-oriented form for most adherents. It certainly is for me.

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:12 (seven years ago)

Voted. So Power Trip (#65) was the top metal/rock album on Pazz & Jop, followed by Elder (83) and QOTSA (86). No other results available.

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 27 January 2018 15:40 (seven years ago)

Who else plans to vote? less than a week to vote! You have until saturday!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 28 January 2018 19:46 (seven years ago)

Will vote!

Siegbran, Sunday, 28 January 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

we only have 13 ballots so far, Hope there's a lot more to come!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 28 January 2018 22:17 (seven years ago)

I will likely be voting minutes from the deadline - still a few things to check out first...

If anyone's still looking to fill their ballot, or even radically change it at the last second, then I'd be thrilled to see any of these placing (sorry if they're obvious, I haven't kept up with the ILX zeitgeist much this last year):

Kairon; IRSE - Ruination: This is a very beautiful sprawling psych album in the same kind of wheelhouse as Elder, but considerably more shoegaze (at times).
https://kaironirse.bandcamp.com/album/ruination

Psudoku - Psudokument: I'm sure imago's mentioned this plenty already, but if you've not listened yet and your tolerance for glittering electro-grindcore is high, then it's well worth hearing.
https://psudoku.bandcamp.com/

Black Cilice - Banished from Time: The grimiest, strangest kind of atmospheric. Genuinely frightening.

Yeah to Black Cilice! That album made my main ballot, all the driney mystique of the previous album but mych more chilling priduction and those vocals!

New Forgotten Spell us v much along those lines as well

Another way super lo-fi black metal album I've bern getting into--though its nowhere near as visceral, a lit more synths--is Rubedo Nocturno. I think you can only find it on soundcloud tho

Voted. As far as campaigning -- everyone should listen to the Spectral Voice album, which is a perfectly idiomatic example of spooky, doomy death. Atmospheric in places, crushing in others. The whole vibe is spot on.

Dominique, Monday, 29 January 2018 14:36 (seven years ago)

That's sounding good.

No purposes. Sounds. (Sund4r), Monday, 29 January 2018 15:12 (seven years ago)

Closing track of the Forgotten Spell (see Youtube for more) is one of the best metal songs of the year, yeah.

The Psudoku is not really for anyone except tt, ultros and I. Maybe Dominique. Hyperactive Cardiacsy grindcore, y'all. You've been warned.

imago, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:14 (seven years ago)

never heard of Psodouku until now, but it's fun after 2 tracks! Kind of Melt Banana-ish? Also, I sincerely hope the name is a combination of Psyopus and Sudoku.

Dominique, Monday, 29 January 2018 15:48 (seven years ago)

Count me in on Psudoku, though I heard it too late to vote for it. Not normally my thing.

IN SPACE NO ONE CAN HEAR YOU'RE NOT SCREAMING part 1:

The Imajinary Friends - The Imajinary Friends
https://theimajinaryfriends.bandcamp.com

Admittedly, it's already a stretch to include space rock in this poll, but its prob an even further stretch to consider this 'space rock': more like potent zone-out acid rock, maybe the most potent head music album I've heard since Black Bananas' Rad Time Xpress IV. It's true that this was a one-off side project for shoegazers like Swervedriver & Brian Jonestown Massacre, their sole caustic acid-fried album released over 20 years ago. And it's true the lead off track brings to mind a lost Broadcast song, prob the least metal thing to touch this thread. Still: this stuff is heavy in the best sense of the world...

Vespero - Shum-Shir
http://music.vespero.ru/album/shum-shir

Maybe even less metal than Imajinary Friends but this isn't really that out of place among other stuff like Sungod, Zombi & Kayo Dot's Coffins on Io. These Russian space-rockers have shown up on my radar once or twice before, but this is the first album that really broke through to me. Basically the concept reads to me as "Fela in space", but there's many unusual elements, like violin and breakbeats, along with the weird alien hyperclarity in the production which often accompany the nerdier corners of *rock*, all of which serves to denaturalize matters quite a bit. I mean, yeah I see how 'neoprog Ozric clones deconstruct afrobeat' might not be the most appealing proposition, but I found this engaging and offbeat

Liquidarlo Celuloide - Superfriccion
https://buhrecords.bandcamp.com/album/br84-liquidarlo-celuloide-superfricci-n

More like 'space punk' this time. Apparently this Peruvian band has been around for a long time. They're totally bonkers, and come across like a more psychedelic Brainiac. This album tends to have two modes: 'manic' and 'frantic'. That said, this might be a touch too much straightforward garage rock for attn defct crew, but I think the first 50 seconds of "Sin piel por no fabricar pegamento" might be sufficient to provide imago with a stray grin

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Wednesday, 31 January 2018 21:08 (seven years ago)

Nobody understands the impulse to write this off more than me; I was all set to play this once and forget. I half-suspect this was the album that made GOTT PUNCH say "fuck it" & nominate Pontiak. Even after the first track, an ok-to-middling ballad, I still figured this was some sort of throwaway anachronism. Then the second track came on, and by the time I made it to the fairly transporting echo-drenched gutar solo, I was won over. Featuring the drummer and guitarist from the old punk band UK Subs

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Thursday, 1 February 2018 16:41 (seven years ago)

anyway, it's v late in the game, but i'd like to particularly rep for

- lunatii's elimino, basically a fake early katatonia record, beautifully, shatteringly depressing, it's all i wanted to listen to last year (https://lunatiiofficial.bandcamp.com/album/elimino-2017)
- the new godflesh, it's so cool and good and i can never stop thinking about it, it's like broadrick employing every style he's ever explored at once (https://godflesh1.bandcamp.com/album/post-self)
- paradise lost's medusa, obv, feels like after the shift in style in their last record they've really arrived on this one
- spectral voice, who are mentioned upthread, and who are one of the rare bands who really get the death/doom balance right, mesmerizing record
- ingurgitating oblivion's vision wallows in symphonies of light which iirc was a joan crawford recommendation. it lives up to the title (https://ingurgitatingoblivion1.bandcamp.com/album/vision-wallows-in-symphonies-of-light)
- fucking couch slut, my god
- king woman! stoner metal packed with hooks!
- idk the new cannibal corpse and immolation records fucking rock

yeah i think that's it

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Friday, 2 February 2018 18:35 (seven years ago)

Going to compile the first draft of my ballot and then let's see if any of these campaigned-for offerings can creep onto my ballot...

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Friday, 2 February 2018 18:36 (seven years ago)

Remembering how much I loved this Hell album. The vocals are insane! And the production really turns the blood.

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Friday, 2 February 2018 19:35 (seven years ago)

I'm only voting for stuff I gave 7/10 or more to, which currently numbers at about 17 albums. I'm sure I'll be able to add to that later!

imago, Friday, 2 February 2018 19:42 (seven years ago)

Voted!

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 2 February 2018 19:50 (seven years ago)

I submitted a ballot but accidentally left off my bottom five, so I resubmitted. Please take the longer ballot and discard the shorter one? Sorry!

airdnb (Tom Violence), Friday, 2 February 2018 19:57 (seven years ago)

I guess I should chuck a ballot into this thing since I was the lone Rebel Wizard voter in the non-metal poll ... been listening to a bunch of Chinese metal but obv none of that's nominated. What time on Saturday does the poll close? 's 9am where I am. Enjoying the Vespero and King Woman so far, though o_O at the latter's Stone Roses cover.

etc, Friday, 2 February 2018 20:19 (seven years ago)

Don't forget to vote in the 10th annual metal poll tomorrow! Even if you send a ballot with only Ex Eye, Blanck Mass and Elder it will still be welcome!

Lol xp

This is how you lure poor, innocent voters in huh? Disgrace.

Ok I've been informed that I'm out of order here.

Will you please add

Blanck Mass - World Eater

to the nominations list

we have 26 ballots in! Last year we dropped from 60 to 40, so lets see if we can get to 40 again at least

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Friday, 2 February 2018 21:30 (seven years ago)

Is it too late for write-ins?

pomenitul, Friday, 2 February 2018 22:15 (seven years ago)

Yeah I have no idea why that Europe album wasnt nominated either, go ahead.

Siegbran, Friday, 2 February 2018 22:22 (seven years ago)

Simon can add to the noms for you if you nominate them here

last 24 hours to vote!

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 00:19 (seven years ago)

Did anybody give the Solstafir album a listen? Their third masterpiece in a row. Siegbran loved it iirc

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 00:23 (seven years ago)

lj and tt i hope you give it a try

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 00:23 (seven years ago)

tbh I think Solstafir is something that could crossover on ilx

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Saturday, 3 February 2018 10:46 (seven years ago)

Favourite finds of the morning:

Big Brave - Surprised I didn't hear about this sooner, so thanks to whoever brought it up itt! Love the vocals and their delicacy as set against this slow grind
Slagmaur - Victorian ghost story covered in moss
Pillorian - Heavy and melodic enough. I like how it changes it up every 30 seconds or so and still manages to sound evenly paced
Sundays & Cybele - You had me at 'paisley'. A smoke-filled fabrics den on a sunny Sunday afternoon

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Saturday, 3 February 2018 12:09 (seven years ago)

Shit I think I forgot to vote for Slagmaur.

Siegbran, Saturday, 3 February 2018 12:27 (seven years ago)

A few more quick albums on the last day of voting

Korto, this year's Comet Control though it's definitely harder candy. See also: power-pop Astronoid
https://korto-yo.bandcamp.com/album/korto-s-t

Plastic Crimewave, spacy Stooges-style garage rock with the chaos element quite prominent
https://cful.bandcamp.com/album/plastic-crimewave-syndicate-thunderbolt-of-flaming-wisdom

10000 Russos, kind of like a more postpunk/kraut-y Moon Duo but with plenty of oppressive sludginess
https://fuzzclub.bandcamp.com/album/distress-distress

Moths & Locusts: this album has a lot more ideas than your average stoner release
https://mothsandlocusts.bandcamp.com/album/intro-outro

the man from P.O.R.L.O.C.K. (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 3 February 2018 12:28 (seven years ago)

I voted for Big|Brave.

1000 Russos sounds awesome, I'm going to check them out.

Bestia Arcana - Holókauston

Rebirth of Nefast - Tabernaculum
SLOW - V – Oceans
Väki -Kirous

Oh! The Lingua Ignota is amazing!

Launch of new ILM school business management programmes! (tangenttangent), Saturday, 3 February 2018 18:25 (seven years ago)

Good, more people should hear it. Strictly speaking not metal of course, but unhinged apoplectic rage rarely sounded this good.

I’m really surprised this wasn’t even nominated in the regular poll.

Siegbran, Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:20 (seven years ago)

because you forgot and nobody else heard it?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:43 (seven years ago)

please remember if you vote to post here that you did so we can confirm it

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)

I didnt nominate anything for the main poll, totally forgot. But more surprised that no-one else did.

Siegbran, Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:49 (seven years ago)

I didn't nominate anything for it either due to my mum being in hospital and being too knackered to do it. So Electric Wizard even went un-nominated.

Only 2 metal albums made the 77 so I think metal poll not running first may have contributed to that?

Chelsea Wolfe only got 3 or 4 votes too so I'm thinking she may not do that well here? I forget if the last one placed.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 21:56 (seven years ago)

Abyss was #6 in the metal poll and #26 in the general one

Dinsdale, Saturday, 3 February 2018 22:22 (seven years ago)

you can still vote for them, but just dont expect them to get more than 1 vote at this late stage. You can be the new gareth saer

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 22:59 (seven years ago)

Is voting a little after the deadline ok?

imago, Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:16 (seven years ago)

If it's because you haven't heard Der Weg Einer Freiheit's 'Finisterre' or Nortt's 'Endeligt' yet, to name but a few, then yes ofcourse it is.

Le Bateau Ivre, Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:23 (seven years ago)

Just sampled those two. Makes me wish I'd had more time…

pomenitul, Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:30 (seven years ago)

well the deadline is US time. so you have what 8 hours or something

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:31 (seven years ago)

Oh! OK!

imago, Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:33 (seven years ago)

so im sure you dont need to vote *after* the deadline.

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:33 (seven years ago)

technically you have until seandalai closes the voting form

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Saturday, 3 February 2018 23:33 (seven years ago)

But 8am UK time is certainly the earliest it will close. Cant guarantee anything after though

imago, Sunday, 4 February 2018 15:57 (seven years ago)

feel like some of the albums I voted on here that I loved, I haven't listened to in months. too much new stuff. had to dig back into the recesses.

I think the Wolves in the Throne Room is the one I played the most. second was the latest Suffocation.

Top 500 this year iirc

Don't know until we see results. Should have them tonight so may post a few tonight as tradition dictates.

I think we normally do a 101?

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 4 February 2018 16:21 (seven years ago)

btw I have no idea what will win, or even make up the top 10. There's no front runners this year that I can tell from the metal thread or metal mags EOY lists

Algerian Goalkeeper (Odysseus), Sunday, 4 February 2018 16:41 (seven years ago)

I do hope we get lots more participation on results thread than last year. I love reading what people think, even if they haven't voted.
